I'm a regular patron of this bar, and have since the current owner took charge, I do agree that the leather scene in this town is not what it should be, but I wear mine there frequently. They now have DJ Mauro spinning tunes beginning at 10 PM on Friday nights, so that is an improvement, and they really need more bartenders like Patrick there!! read more

You have to be mentally prepare for this fetish/ leather bar. Fair Warning! I've been here 3 times on random occasions. I can't really say anything negative about this place except for the pee smell. Why any women would insist on going there let alone publish a bad review for being turned down is a mystery to me. Went for the first time ever last night, and was pleasantly surprised. Not typically my setting, however any place that has $1 Bud drafts and free pool is going to sit quite well with me. Furthermore, I wasn't bothered like usual, in fact everyone was quite polite and respectful. I look forward to returning for another cheap night of beer and pool. read more

It's a nice dark hole in the wall, which is kind of my setting. They had a decent music selection on the jukebox. The bartender's for the most part were friendly (except one of them, who was a complete douchebag). It's also the only s&m bar in the city, so if you are into leather, whips, chains, and boot licking then this place is for you. Last time I went here the place was packed and I felt out of place. Everyone was either in leather or shirtless, and I was the only one wearing a flannel shirt and blue skinny jeans; so the unofficial dress code is at least wear something leather. The price of the drinks is kind of pricey (like fifty cents more than #1 fifth avenue in Hillcrest), but the are strong and will get you. Pool is free too, mostly the older crowd hangs out here though. read more

The floors probably haven't been mopped since the Clinton administration. Sure... The walls are littered with chains, stocks, cages, and miscellaneous leather gear. Sure... The first person you meet is the big hairy shoeless dude with a beer belly. That said... The drinks are cheap. The drinks are tasty. The bartender is always smiling. And, most importantly... I agree with the reviews that this bar is dangerous for women. To put it plainly, I didn't even make it inside the bar before I left. First, no open toed shoes allowed. But apparently people have sex inside the bathroom. Was greeted by the bouncer (who told me I can't have open toed shoes) and then when I turned around to leave, he started making derogatory remarks to me and my girl friends. I had a ball here last year when I was in town, but after last weekend I'll never go again, and will warn ANY queer/leatherfolk/BDSM friends away from it. First: the doorman turned us away, reading us as a group of women and saying it was a "private party," although it was not; it was Flogging Friday, for god's sake! When we made clear we knew that, he begrudgingly let us in. Second, shortly after we bought drinks, a couple of leathermen left, loudly grumbling in front of us that there were "too many women here tonight" and they thought "this was a men's club." I wish it were possible to give zero or negative stars for businesses. On Saturday night, 1/21/2012, five of us...three gay guys and two lesbians...were at a few other bars in the area. We decided to cruise on in to the Eagle since we were right there. We walked up to the bar, ordered drinks and proceeded to head to the back of the bar where we stood talking to each other. A security guard...or someone identifying as a security guard...approached us and very oddly asks "who yelled for security"? Our answer was, "not us" and we went back to our drinks. Five minutes later, the owner walks up and proceeds to tell us "you three can stay, but you should know this is a man's bar" and walked off...and THERE IS WHERE THE PROBLEM IS! The bar was happy to take our $39 drink order and a $5 dollar tip, but then we were told that our female friends couldn't stay in a really passive aggressive, b*tchy way. I am fine with gay men having their own bars, but they should have told us that when we walked in the door. They should have told us that when ordered drinks at the bar. The owner should have approached us in a professional manner, and politely explained that this is a man's bar and that, typically, women don't patronage this establishment. Oh, did I mention that there was a (real) woman sitting at the bar when we walked in?!? Bottom line is this, it is fine to have a bar that is for select people. If that's the case, then tell your customers before they spend money at your bar; otherwise, you're guilty of really bad business practices. It goes without saying, it's safe to say that the five of us won't be back. One more thing...a leather bar? No...perhaps a levi bar, but far from a leather bar. read more

This place is interesting... it's a funny place to take someone who has no idea what kind of bar this is. It's basically a leather/ fetish bar. The first time I went here I had no idea what it was, I had just moved to north park and looked up gay bars and the only thing that showed up was the eagle, I didn't read any reviews just showed up. When I walked in it was dark... which is pretty normal for a bar I suppose. I then noticed a lot of shirtless men and some in leather gear, which isn't really that weird either. I then noticed some casual 80s porn playing on the box tv in the corner. There's a small area of the bar that is lit up where the pool table is and a portion of the bar... then it just is very dark the rest of it. There was a decent amount of people in there, most were kind of creeping in the shadows... Like I could tell people were there, but couldn't make out what they actually looked like. The people were pretty friendly.. for the most part. I took my friend there one night, it happened to be 'yellow handkerchief night' that was interesting... we weren't there very long for that. read more

The bartenders such as Dutch, Rob, Mikey and Josh are always a pleasure and are quite comical. I do not go there often but when I do I always find myself laughing and having a great time. On Thursdays they barbeque out front for the customers and sometimes Dutch barbeques out front for holidays and others events. Kinda cool! read more

I have been coming to the San Diego Eagle for 4 years since I moved to the area and found it to be a place where those with different fetishes can enjoy a beer or cocktail. One of the greatest things about the Eagle is its bartenders and frankly if it wasn't for the diehard bartenders I think the Eagle would have gone bankrupt by now. I have totally enjoyed the Wednesday night social potlucks and the Thursday hot dog or what ever Dutch would cook. Coupled with laughter, good friends and good times the Eagle was my bar of choice. Lately I have tried to come back to the Eagle, again I say the bartenders are the only thing keeping it open. Nicholas, the owner, comes in nearly every evening and usually stays around to have at least one or two Sweet Tea's. On more than one occasion he has expressed his political views which totally are against anything the Gay community stands for but yet we go to his bar and support him... Well let me restate why I go there is to support my favorite bartenders... It is also very well known and I speak from my personal experience that Nicholas also complains to customers about how poor business is.... It is also common for him to be rude to customers who are simply there to enjoy a cold beer or a tasty cocktail that our supported bartenders create for us. This past Friday night the Eagle hosted the Mr San Diego Eagle contest and I just happen to go there for drinks with a friend not knowing it was a contest night. Cool, I was dressed appropriate for the occasion with my leather. My friend and I got to the bar and ordered a drink. My friend looked to the left and there was an empty bar stool so he sat down. Now mind you, many times a bar stool is reserved for customers and it is common respect for all to get up and let it be. This time I beg the difference! It was Nicholas who told my friend he was not allowed to sit there because it was reserved for "his boy." WHAT??? Hmmmm, I looked around the bar and for an event that is solely for the purpose of the San Diego Eagle this place was busy but no where near packed like it had been in past events I stumbled upon. So I got a spot in the bar to watch the event and noticed several times other customers were rudely spoken to and told that that seat was reserved for his boy. Hello Nicholas, Its really time to wake up and quit complaining about business when you are running customers out of your bar. The Wednesday night social potluck which used to bring in 30-40 people had 2 this past week. The Mr. San Diego Eagle contest was busy, but the house was not packed and it's a contest with your business name all over it. Instead of taking seats from those customers who do come to have a good time, how about the OWNER giving his seat up and making customers "feel welcome." And finally, You should keep your Republican views to yourself. We in the gay community think everyone has a right to vote how they choose, but when the Republicans do everything possible to squash gays or anything they stand for I have no clue how you can support those who sabotage your business buy not supporting the gay community. I sincerely wish the Eagle well. However, under the current ownership I do not see it making it many more years before it will need new ownership in order to be revived. A true test will be the brewery going in the same complex as the Eagle. read more

I recently went to the eagle. Let me first say that (A) I am not gay, (B) I am not a man, but just because I am not either one doesn't not mean I do not love the gay community. I am a supporter of my gay friends and family. With that being said , being a Sunday night, one of my friends who is gay and frequents this particular bar alot and swears by it , loves the underwear contest wanted to compete, being the supporting friends that we are we go to cheer him up, he even convinces my heterosexual friend who is guy to join them. So a total of 3 boys and 3 girls go. As the owner of the bar approaches us, I don't remember his name but he is friends with my my friend who frequents this place, and says " What is up with all these women" Stares at us, up and down and walks away, he then tell my friend privately " what is wrong with you bringing these girls here". My friend just responded they are here for support and they are my Friends. one of the girls who was with us has had problems with him as well, she said that once she went up to the bar and ordered a drink and only served the two guys she was with, and then asked him can I have a drink too, which he responded to her " I only see two people here" and walked away with out serving her. ( He is also a bar tender). I wasn't super offended, my friend who took us there probably took it harder than us girls. I just find it to be a bit ironic that some one who I'm sure has been a victim of discrimination at one point in his live and fights for equality, would discriminate against my friends and I because of what does not hang between our legs. I actually feel very sorry for this ignorant sad man, and an obvious bad business man, I will never step foot in this bar nor will I bring my business or my money. read more

Came here on a Sunday around 3:30-4pm. I guess unlike a few other bars like The Hole where there is a guaranteed crowd, this isn't the time to come to the Eagle. There wasn't even 10 people in the place at this time of day. Worst part is the moment I walked in the door, it smelled like pee. I toughed it out and had a drink (bacardi and coke) and it was pretty good so I'll give it that and the price was alright and the bartender plenty nice although not overly chatty. Maybe if it didn't smell like pee I'd try it again sometime at a different time of day, but the smell just killed it for me. read more

I like the Eagle. It's a good place to relax if you're into leather. and various fetishes. As the only leather bar in San Diego it does try to hold events that cater to different fetish communities. Saturday july 20th at 11:30 pm i went to eagle bar, and tried to get in, with passport of my country but the security guard named Steve or Dave, would not let me in couse he said they only take card ID, by the way he was so drunk that i could smell his stinky breath, while he talking to me, and i asked are u drunk?
