I've been there three times this week coincidentally and I enjoyed it each time. I've had the golden chai, the maple cinnamon latte, and a vanilla latte. Both lattes were with oat milk. The maple cinnamon was super maple-y but still good. The vanilla latte was standard, not the best I've had in the area but would still get it again (and likely will). The golden chai was definitely the winner though. I don't even like chai that much and I was just delicious. Would definitely head here for that on a cold day. I went to Big House Beans randomly, because I was looking for a good Açaí bowl. Unfortunately, it was so good i forgot to take a picture. The texture was good and they gave you a good amount for the price. Surprisingly, the REAL winner of the order was this smoked salmon toast! It was a thick, hearty piece of toast and everything on top tasted SO FRESH. It was toasted to perfection and really hit the spot. But it's relatively difficult to find... *(the information on my phone, after the comment from the owner below I decided to look on my laptop and it was much easier to find) (The business owner John is a former inmate and the business strides to provide second chances to those who have had a difficult similar past or those who have had barriers in their lives through employment .) The matcha and drinks are fairly priced for the size and location. The meals are yummy and they carry a GF option. The establishment is owned by a couple from Brentwood. I ordered a matcha latte w oat milk and an avocado toast on GF bread, add egg. The egg isn't fried, which is what I thought it would be. But that's fine. The bread was nice and fluffy for being Gf so I enjoyed that. Thanks for the response John, one thing I must say. You are correct, it is better to be vulnerable and ask questions, which was the purpose of the review. There was in no way any assumptions being made, just questions. So glad I came to Temescal environs to find Big House Beans. Now I am hooked on their really good coffee, nice chill no nonsense vibes, great Barista Zac, wonderful staff, special and large seating area that is open to humans and dogs of all kinds and even has a special kids area in the way back. I love their grub too. The overnight oats, breakfast Sandie on brioche bread, toasts, lovely blt. They actually serve large coffee, which none of the major non-chain coffee houses in oakland and Berkeley do. And they serve your food and drink Non-disposable mugs, plates etc. love it. This is a treasure in our neighborhood. Lucky to live close by to go everyday. read more

As a non coffee drinker, I appreciated the option of teas! Love BHB- occasionally can snag amazing street-side parking but it's a hit or miss! At least it's worth a shot on Sundays when it's free. Big House Beans is arguably one of my favorite places in the Temescal District (besides Curbside Creamery). The menu includes tons of drinks and food to choose from, and seating inside - at least from my experience - is more than ample enough for a study session or a cozy date with a friend or partner. What I find most intriguing about Big House Beans is that the coffee establishment is founded by an ex-convict who believes in a second chance at life. I would actually love to meet him one day and tell him how much I love Big House Beans, haha! read more

Finally a sit-down coffee shop in the neighborhood! Their prices are also much more reasonable than some of the competitors nearby. They're brand new and serve some toasts to go along with their (in-house roasted) coffee. Lots of indoor seating (and a couple of bistro tables outside). The espresso flavor is unique, although maybe a little bitter for some people. So far I've tried a cappuccino and latte and preferred the latte. My biggest complaint is about the music. I personally like my cafes a little rave-y, but at least on the day I stayed and did some work I found their techno a little over the top. read more

I am so happy I found this place! I assume its on the new side because there weren't a ton of reviews, but there were a bunch of people here so I assume people in the neighborhood know about it. I got an acai bowl which was great, and I didn't get anything to drink, but overheard others talking about how they loved the coffee. The indoor area is great for working. There are outlets here, but they aren't accessible from all of the tables, so keep that in mind if needed. read more

Tried the lavender cold brew and it tasted great! Coffee was smooth with a hint to lavender/floral notes. They apparently have a lavender latte but did not see it on the menu. Whewww this place is so refreshing. I try a new cafe every Friday and today was this spot. Its nice inside, clean, and the baristas were welcoming so early this morning. Hubby ordered an extra dry cappuccino and it was perfect he said... he is hard to please btw. I ordered a maple cinnamon hot latte. Yummy! As we rode back to the lake to sit, I enjoyed sipping on this hot, not too sweet and perfectly made latte. A little pricey ($9) but while I'm a person that normally always needs a bite of topping with the acai smoothie, this time I was munching away at the smoothie alone because it was that good. Really great strong coffee. I had the Ethiopia pour over. If you dine in, they will provide your drink in a for-here cup. There are tubs to place dirty dishes after you are done. Very spacious interior, lots of tables, including some with seating against a wall. Back area includes a large U-shaped bench with kids toys on a lower table. Nice area for meetups esp with kids. Two genderless bathrooms in the back, very clean. Didn't use the wifi but I know they have it! There are outlets for laptops and chargers along the posts at the bar style tables near the windows. Lovely place. Will definitely be back. Parking is challenging but street parking is available, although requires payment M-Sat and limited to 2 hours. If you're lucky, you may find free residential parking near by. Knocked off a star for the parking situation but otherwise really nice place to get some studying or work done! read more

I found this place a few weeks ago and it is already my go-to coffee place. I love the atmosphere and from the number of people who were there on a weekday morning, it is clear others do also. The staff is friendly and welcoming and I appreciate that they don't rush you to order. This doesn't mean the service is slow, they just have a cool, chill vibe. Good place to spend a couple of hours working or studying. I will be back. I had a golden chai latte and I like the zing that turmeric adds to the drink. I had a training class to do for work and was falling asleep so I looked up the nearest coffee shop and i found this gem. let me tell you what i order a 16oz ice sugar free vanilla coffee with whole milk and a avocado toast and everything was amazing and the coffee woke me up even though they almost forgot it lol. this place is so nice and spacious you'll have a place to work at if you need it and it even has a kid's area. i wish i lived near it. oh and the employees are nice and laid back and fast at taking your orders and making you coffee/food i think i waited like 5 mins or so. read more

I love studying here. I've only come two times but will be coming more often now that I've discovered this place. I go to grad school nearby so this place is very convenient for me. It is also located in one of the most up and coming places in the bay area, Temescal of Oakland. Parking around the area is easy! I've found street parking both times nearby. Also, they allow dogs in the cafe. I have a medium sized Shiba Inu that I like to take with me wherever I go if I can. They do have a 3 bark rule, so if you have a more yappy dog, I suggest sitting outside. I do wish they had bigger tables outside, but that could be a hassle to bring in for the workers during closing time. The inside is beautiful! It is a fairly new cafe so it is a clean and fresh environment. I also overall love the layout of the cafe. You have a huge table in front of the coffee brewing station, then a bunch of stool tables near the window. They even have a corner where kids can hangout, away from the other tables in the cafe. Gender-neutral bathrooms x2 and now let's talk about the coffee. I have tried their cold brew coffee and their lavender cold brew coffee. Both delicious and both fairly priced. My only wish is that they'd be open longer than 3pm on certain days. I could stay here FOREVER. Maybe not forever, but a very long time on days when I want to be productive. Have to admit I haven't been in a while but BHB or Big Bean as my husband and I affectionately call it is a gem. The manager (owner?) is consistent and when I was in there a lot more remembered my name and order. The people that work there seem like they actually want to be there which is... all I can ask for post-Covid. The food is great and well priced. I normally just omit things like extra spreads or sauces to make it more healthy for my dietary choices. Lattes are creamy and well balanced. I really like this environment for working remotely. If you can find a cozy spot they don't seem to mind a little temporary stay just make sure you are spending money (be a good customer). There's 2 bathrooms and they are generally clean and well maintained. They are very dog friendly and the music is good. Will try to be back sooner than later. read more

I'm glad this cafe is in my neighborhood. I like the dark roast better than the light roast, the latter being a little sour and lacking that kick I'd expect from a light roast. It's a little pricey, but everything is these days. The staff is friendly and plays cool music, except for one lady who doesn't seem to like people very much. I noticed that she only responds to some people, I won't mention what demographics she prefers. When she hands you things and you say thank you, she just gives you a dirty look and walks away. What am I tipping 25% for here? The last time I visited the cafe, after waiting patiently in line I got to the register and she just stared at me. I said hello and she let out a short "hi" and just stared at me blankly. I just left. I had planned on getting a sandwich, a coffee, and a hot chocolate since I was going to camp and get some work done. I just went home instead.
