Let me just set the expectations that this a Japanese Italian fusion so the goal here is to combine to seemingly unrelated cuisines and make them seem like they have always complemented each other, and to they definitely do it well in my opinion. With that said the we were greeted and they kindly offered to take our coats for coat check and they immediately seated me while my husband tried to find parking. Our waiter got me started with drinks while I waited and looked at the menu. Once he arrived she gave a full run down and asked about preferences which was very kind and was really able to guide us in making the best choices for us. For starters we had the mistake karaage which is mainly dressed up mushrooms but packed with flavors (the umami hits hard here) and the arancini which is not your average arancini but still oh so delicious! For our mains we had the aglio e olio - not your usual Italian version but had very similar vibes and still very delicious. We had the Verdi pizza and honestly I loved the doughy crust and they way the unique flavors meld together! I don't remember what the dessert was called but I have attached the pic, it was like cream puffs with a sweet balsamic glaze and it was soooo delicious! It is an upscale place with modern organic vibes. I personally liked being able to look into the kitchen but you can always ask for seating away from that area. Sanjusan is Japanese-Italian fusion. Sounds strange, right? Well sometimes strange works! We made a chef's counter reservation and were seated immediately. Service was prompt and attentive. It was also a lot of fun watching the food be prepared live. The atmosphere was clean and contemporary, and the space filled up quick with patrons. We kicked off our meal with the Five Ring Spritz cocktail. It was so refreshing and unique. We also ordered the Eggplant Katsu small plate, which was perfectly crispy and served over a well dressed red cabbage slaw. Next, we tried the A5 Wagyu Nigiri... translation, a one-bite dish of wagyu served nigiri style over rice. We had split opinions on this, my friend thought this was an incredible dish, whereas I thought it was not worth the $10. You'll have to make the call for yourself! For entrees, I had the Squid Ink Pappardelle - I loved it. My friend tried the Fettuccine ai Uni, which had a good about of crab, she was happy. We would've liked to try the pizza or yakitori, but were too full on the other goodies we ate! I think Sanjusan lived up to the hype overall! Phenomenal experience celebrating our anniversary at Sanjusan. It was so nice to be back in the North Loop for some delicious eats. We had reservations at 5 PM which was right at the opening. So good to be back to Kado No Mise stomping grounds. Not gonna lie, it was pretty nice to get there since we had good parking and were able to have excellent service before the crowds rumbled in. Another plus was the night was still young after dinner! Menu was different and a first for us in trying these two cuisines of Japan and Italy infused together. Prices were rather reasonable for a "fine dining" experience. Ordered - Hiramasa Crudo (5/5). Amazing. I loved the cucumber sauce and the filet was on point - Eggplant Katsu (5/5). Wow, I could eat this all day even if it is all veggie. It was so tasty and the red cabbage went so well as a side - Squid Ink Pappardelle (4.5/5). We enjoyed it. A little salty but it ties all the ingredients nicely. It definitely has umami flavors (fish sauce?) and the noodles were thick and flavors - Four Skewer Osusume (5/5). Excellent. We loved this! The liver, mushrooms, chicken were so salivating and the dipping sauce that went with it was tangy and complementary. Need to order a few more skewers next time :) - Micah Drink (5/5). One of the best drinks we've had. The gin was smooth and our server was nice to divide our drink in shareable glasses. The cotton candy that went with this drink was phenomenal- gives me Spoon & Stable vibes - Verdi Pizza (4/5). This was perhaps more Italian and didn't really see much of the Japanese flavors despite a miso pesto being used as base. I'm not the biggest fan of white sauce in general. It was tasty but nothing crazy to rave. Next time we will have to try the Issac Becker to get the fusion - Roasted Rice and Green Tea Flan (4/5). Good. Customer service was really good, waiters and waitresses were extremely nice and outgoing. However, the food and prices did not by any means match. I ordered a $23 spaghetti that came in one of the worlds smallest bowls. It was extremely salty as well as the rest of the dishes my family had (none less than $23). Drinks were also to say the least, double the price they should be ( $10 lemonade). Again service was great but the food was terrible. OMG, I don't even know where to begin, it was soooooo good (and good is such an understatement). No seriously, I was looking up synonyms for good so I could sound intelligent to the server. We were promptly seated in the bar area, which was small and about half of the restaurant. on the other side, was a more formal seating dining area. Very open and spacious, lots of natural light and wood, sort of industrial but very modern. The servers stayed behind the bar and were very attentive. Welcoming and open to helping us make decisions. I was a bit intimidated by the menu, as I was not familiar with many of the ingredients. I let my husband take the wheel and had an amazing, mouthwatering ride. We ordered the gyoza, which was absolute fire. If I could have licked that plate and not be judged, I totally would have. Whatever that sauce is....ooh that was it! we also ordered Arancini and the squid ink pasta. The flavors were sensational. Not overpowering but very soft, light, but very distinct- and flipping delicious. The Toma cocktail was so cool and refreshing. Not too strong or too sweet. Literally just right. We were not disappointed. First, you have to order the Mican cocktails, it is delicious, odd and Instagram worthy! I did not not know what I was getting myself into when I arrived here. I pulled up to the restaurant and was led toward Valet. I entered the restaurant and was amazed by the decor and bustling activity. I had never even heard of this place, yet it was so packed I thought I needed a reservation to get in. I sat at the bar and enjoyed some of the best drinks I have ever had in my life. I believe one of the drinks were named "Tomo". It had a melon base and it was out of this world. I enjoyed some amazing yakitori and ended my night. The staff didn't know I was a Yelp Elite and I still was treated like a celebrity. I felt like I was in an upscale place in Japan. We shared the duck tataki, the Isaac Becker pizza, and several pieces of Yakitori. The servers were polite and helpful. The food was all delicious, especially the Isaac Becker. I did not know what to think about raw tuna on a pizza but it works strangely well! And the pizza crust was cooked perfectly. SO good! I had the Hana Hachi cocktail, which was great. It's a very nice restaurant, and all the food is very nice. Minnesota nice. It's all very pleasant, but it is missing some kind of spark. In addition to the usual shower of Parmesan, the Caesar salad has little Japanese adornments, including tempura anchovies, green onions and furikake (sesame and seaweed crunchies). But none of it made it taste any better. If I closed my eyes, I would pronounce it bottled creamy Caesar dressing. The arancini are correct. Crispy little balls of gooey risotto. But the pea salad is kind of tough and unwieldy to eat. Having recently had pea salad at Sooki and Mimi, it would have been tough to impress me with anything lesser. Yakitori chicken and meatball was good-ish. Not terribly flavorful, but it did come with a few tiny cubes of kimchee radish, togarashi and horseradish mustard. The fettuccine with uni had tasty bits of sweet fresh snow crab. I'm not sure I detected any taste of uni butter in the sauce, and I could see (but not taste) little slices of Serrano peppers, but the pasta was mushy. Pizza Margherita looked just like it's supposed to. Tangy fresh tasting tomato sauce, but the cheese was flavorless and the crust exceedingly doughy, not airy like a wood fired pizza normally is. I already had high expectations coming in before the chef was well known and who doesn't love fusion? We ordered the squash arancini, verdi pizza and shrimp ravioli. The Arancini was crunchy and cheesy with the brown butter sauce, amazing. The shrimp ravioli was my favorite. The first bite was fresh lemon but not too overpowering and the shrimp and seafood flavor hit right after. It was dressed with an XO sauce and all I could say was that the plate was clean after. It's citrusy and the warmth from the pizza sauce with cold tuna, it's just chefs kiss! Pasta: Mentaiko Lumache - the sauce is so creamy it has some sort of fish eggs and the basil and toasted Nori just bring it all together. It's an actual experience! It's like a adult mac and cheese but there are levels to it. Flan - Their Green Tea, toasted rice flan was soooo good. As soon as I saw a picture of the gin cocktail with a mandarin cloud I booked a reservation. In the former Kado No Mise space, this Japanese / Italian fusion sounds strange but totally works. My boyfriend and I went a week or so after their official opening on a Wednesday night and it was pretty busy but very COVID-safe. The space is very intimate and cute and we were sat at the bar so we got to chat with the bartender. All of the staff there were great and very friendly. We did have to wait 5-10 minutes after getting there for a table to open up even though we had a reservation, but assuming since it's so new still that they'll be very busy the next few weeks. The cocktails were incredible - I'm going to be dreaming of the super mandarin-flavored cotton candy for days (the drink was the Mican!). We split the eggplant katsu to start and I never thought I'd rave about cabbage but OMG it was the star of the show! So flavorful and definitely had a kick of spice to it. We also split the squid ink pappardelle with seafood bolognese and the Verdi pizza - miso pesto, burrata, walnuts, Parmesan. Both were absolutely incredible! It was the perfect serving size and had a beautiful blend of Italian and Japanese flavors. Ambiance: I unfortunately didn't get to experience the patio, but the inside was very nice and modern looking! Plenty of high tops and bar seating which created an elevated casual setting. We were lucky to get a table (partially because I made a reservation for this - definitely recommend doing that) but the tables are a packed together kind of tight. With all the people inside, it is on the louder side, but I was still able to hear my friend without feeling like I had to shout. Service: our server was probably on of the best ones I've had in a while. He was incredibly helpful, especially when my friend and I mentioned that we were vegetarian. He even got down to make the menus with V's to show what is or could be made vegetarian. Cost: if you're on a budget, know that this place isn't cheap. The prices mimic typical "big city" prices (think NYC, SF, etc) which isn't terrible but slightly more expensive than your typical MN dinner. Sanjusan is the perfect restaurant for a special occasion! I went for dinner for my sister's birthday, and four of us shared all the food that we ordered. I started with the Mican cocktail, which was delicious, citrusy and not overly sweet. It is served with a grapefruit cotton candy "cloud" that was also very tasty and had a surprisingly complex flavor. The server recommended eating it separately and not dipping it in the drink itself as this can make the cocktail too sweet. For appetizers we ordered the arancini, calamari and pork gyoza. All were absolutely delicious, but the unanimous favorite was the arancini - I could have eaten at least two more servings of those by myself. We ranked the apps as follows: 1. Arancini, 2. Gyoza, 3. Calamari. For entrees myself and another person split the gem salad and the Verdi pizza. I think the Verdi pizza (which I've had previously) is a must order at Sanjusan, and the delicious miso pesto topping did not disappoint. The gem salad was recommended to us by our server and it was also very good, and to me felt similar to the Caesar salad that they used to have on the menu (gone now), with plenty of shaved cheese on top. I'm not a big fan of fusion food, and to be honest, the sound of Italian and Japanese cuisine melding together didn't exactly feel like it was going to gel. I have never been happier to be wrong. Sanjusan has the perfect blend of Italian and Japanese fusion, and manages to carve out an identity all its own in the Twin Cities. First off - make a reservation! It's still COVID times, but even if it wasn't, Sanjusan is seriously hopping. To get in during regular-ish dinner times is a fight. Parking is pretty much street parking in North Loop, although they have tiniest parking lot for you to attempt. My friend and I ordered the basil arancini to start, with a squid ink pappardelle for her and a fettuccine ai uni for myself. I also ordered a wing yakitori, and the Mican cocktail. I felt the cocktail was really well balanced, not too sweet or bitter, but certainly Instagrammable. First off - the arancini. The arancini itself was delicious - airy and delicate, with just enough crisp on the exterior to have that satisfying crunch, met with a soft and fluffy interior. The pea puree underneath was wonderful as well, and tied the whole dish together. The salad though? Could definitely do without. The mint/pea shoot combination with the toasted nori just made the entire salad very salty and peppery, and even with the pea puree underneath, was overpowering. Onto the entrees. The fettuccine ai uni was AMAZING. I had a bite of the squid ink pappardelle with bolognese and that was also tasty. I love squid ink pastas, so I'm a fan, and the bolognese had a little heat too, so it was a nice balance. The fettuccine was amazingly creamy with the uni, and for the serving size, pretty generous with the snow crab, I felt. The sweetness of the crab, mixed with the richness of the uni with a bit of heat from the serrano just made it such an enjoyable dish. And surprisingly filling! The yakitori - I love yakitori. I had heard there were off menu cuts like liver available sometimes (although our server did inform us that they mix it into the meatball too), so be sure to ask if you can. Alas, there were none, so I tried a wing and it was really nicely done. The meat was juicy and flavorful, with a beautiful char on the outside, accompanied with a sort of spicy sweet dipping sauce. I definitely could imagine myself eating a few yakitori with a beer after hours if I was in the area. We finished the meal off by splitting a rice flan dessert (their only dessert, not on menu) which was pretty solid. The flan itself was nice and fluffy, mousse-like, which I preferred. The sauce itself was a caramel sauce with either pear or apple, which we felt one of the components were on the side of being too sweet. All in all, it was a solid dessert and a great way to end our dining experience. The service was top notch, as to be expected. It's a small space, so expect it to be a bit loud indoors. They were open for patio dining, and when the weather is consistently nice, I imagine it would be a little quieter dining outdoors than in. Sanjusan is a welcome addition to the Twin Cities dining scene, blending the best of two cuisines that work the best with delicate flavors. I never knew I needed Italian and Japanese fusion before in my life, and I'm happy to know that Sanjusan is here to fill that void. read more

I went with my 15 year old son and he told me that he likes the food there. We had the fried prawns, Wagyu nigiri and chicken wing appetizer and all were very good. My son was a huge fan of the wing and I agree it was fantastic! I was surprised he liked the nigiri too. I wonder if he knew it was raw beef. We also had the Pappardelle and Margherita pizza. Both looked beautiful and were yummy. The staff were friendly and helpful. The restaurant is so beautiful. I was super confused when my Uber dropped my husband and I off at Kado No Mise to meet some friends, it took us a minute to realize it was the same restaurant...oy, I was not thrilled when we found this out as we weren't overly impressed with Kado No Mise, but we were happily surprised with Sanjusan. Alright, so in typical fashion, we ordered almost the whole menu, a little of everything from each section. Absolute must haves, A5 wagyu nigiri, basil arancini, whatever the pasta was with the lobster roe was, and the Isaac Becker pizza. We had a bunch of other stuff that were all delicious, but these dishes were the standouts for me. I could have eaten 15 of the wagyu nigiri and forgo the rest, maybe next time... We tried several cocktails and a couple bottles of wine. I had the Sanjusan old fashion and Hamani, they were fine, not organismic. I ate the garnishment in the old fashion, which was seaweed. It taste like nothing and apparently no one else at my table eats their garnishments...oh well, I did what I did. Absolutely phenomenal food from the team behind Colita/Rosalia/Martina. Japanese and Italian fusion with a creative cocktail list. This is a very difficulty reservation to get as already, they are booked out days on Tock. Highly recommend amazing your way. My husband and I went to Origami on our first date so this seemed a fitting choice for our Anniversary and we were not disappointed! We couldn't pass up the chance to try Wagyu Nigiri and some of the seafood dishes they served. We walked in with no reservation, sat at the alcohol bar and had a five star experience! The Squid Ink Pappardelle was so rich and full of umami, and the texture of the finely chopped squid, octopus, and shrimp had the feel of ground beef with the savory richness of seafood! The red sauce was perfectly warm and slightly spicy throughout. We enjoyed our Wagyu and only recommend you eat in small bites since it does take a little toothy chew to bite through the beef. My only recommendation would be a small horseradish or wasabi dipping sauce as it was just a little dry, although they say it is brushed with ponzu and horseradish. I could not taste either of those. Our hands down favorite was the Arancini, which differs by season and isn't the same as what we saw in other reviews. They're four little fried rice balls and these had beet flavor inside and topped with Oyster Mushrooms and a soft boiled egg. Dipping the Arancini through the egg yolk was amazing. We also liked the Eggplant Tempura but mainly because the bright citrus sauce on the healthy portion of slaw underneath made it a perfect compliment to all the rich flavors we were tasting.
