This review is strictly based on airport food standard. I wanted to have some hot noodle soup when I had a stopover at SFO. After checking Yelp reviews of this place and the other Japanese place in Terminal 3, I decided to give this place a try. I ordered a regular Ramen. For airport food, the taste was not bad and the portion size was just right. Price was $10.95 plus 9% tax and 2% employee benefit surcharge, so it came out to be $12.18 for a bowl of ramen, 3 pieces of pork, and a bunch of seaweed. Service was meh. Will I eat here again next time I come to SFO? Maybe... if I want noodles again. read more

I'm at the airport at least 2-3 weeks of the month. Having said that I must have zipped by this place countless times. It's located over near Gate 71A. So why did I try it today? It's rainy, cold and I just wanted soup today. Add this to my flight delay and here I was. I ordered the Delux Udon. The wait was minimal- maybe 4 mins or so. When my udon order was up I did a double take because it looked like a legit bowl of udon! I was able to procure a table just to the left of the establishment where I then noticed the glistening bowl of soup coupled with the yummy aroma of dashi. The delux udon came with several pieces of Kamaboko (Japanese fish cake), one crispy and lightly batterer shrimp tempura, a nice portion of well seasoned and ever so tender shredded beef & onion, wakame (seaweed), and what looked like an entire chicken thigh! The udon was just past al dente, the broth was an unctuous bowl of brothy goodness--- just heaven! The beef and onion was simmered to a melt in your mouth state of goodness and the chicken was well seasoned and tender! I seldom ever finish a bowl of udon or ramen because I ALWAYS drink the broth first. I came close leaving behind only a small strand or two of udon and a small bit of the chicken- not because it wasn't good, rather because I'm just not a fan of chicken these days. I WILL BE BACK! What would you expect from an airport terminal Japanese restaurant? Well, I browsed the menu and loved that the curry came in chicken and beef varieties...I ordered the former and some hot green tea. If I fly United and domestic, I usually would make a stop here if I am hungry. Fast and quick and the food is decent. They have ramen, udon and also sushi! Prices are definitely pricey, I mean it's the airport. I always get their Tempura Udon, super flavorful, comforting and good portions. The staff are stupid nice! I had a flight delay, so the crew gave us meal passes to get food from inside the airport. I could've used it anywhere but was craving Japanese food so decided to go here. I expected it to be a lot better since it IS San Francisco. I know it isn't Hawaii, so my expectations weren't too high, but this was just not good. It is overpriced and quite bland. The woman at the register was on her phone and didn't even acknowledge me until I said "Excuse me" about three times. When she came over, she did so with an eye roll and, even after I told her I have a shellfish allergy, kept trying to convince me to buy shrimp tempura or "add shrimp to [my] udon for only $3 more." The sushi was really dry, and I had to add shoyu to give it flavor. The udon noodles were cooked well, but my broth was bitter and only slightly warm as if it was just heated in a microwave. The gyoza was cold and I was not happy about it, so I asked if I could get it reheated and the employee told me no. The only good thing about this place is that there is a lot of seating near outlets so that I could charge my phone. This is actually a pretty tasty airport restaurant!! First of all, the quLity is pretty good and the prices are really not too bad considering it's a Japanese restaurant and that it's at the airport. I got a bento box for $14.45 and it was huge, including both chicken terriyaki, salmon, rice, three California rolls, veggies, seaweed salad and an orange! I must say, I was actually really impressed with the quality of the salmon- it was tender, well smoked, and a good size chunk :) the terriyaki was also good, and there was a lot! I've also had the udon here too, and it's tasty and a good portion. They also have convenient prepacked sushi like rainbow rolls, spicy tuna, California, etc for around $10-15. Thought I didn't have any, they look decently fresh and I saw a couple guys rolling and cutting fish right there so seems legit. They also have some yummy Japanese drinks, shrimp chips, Pocky, etc as well as a little area with condiments such as soy sauce, peppers, and a nice Japanese spice mix (sorry for the vague description!)-- I thought this was a nice touch. Don't do it! We got a bland cold curry and a rainbow roll. Once we sat down we noticed the fish on the rainbow roll all looked a little sad and grey. One bite told us the fish was definitely bad, so we took it back. The lady said she's just going to give us our money back since we "shouldn't bother exchanging it for another one since all the fish is the same." After she figured out how to return our money for the roll, she continued to sell the bad fish. There wasn't a time stamp on the raw food or EVEN A DATE stamp. Considering it is airport food. It is really tasty at a decent price! I was impressed by everything we ordered, and it was super fast. I got the spicy tuna rolls, and the salmon & rice bowl! And, I ate every morsel! Ssure I might have been hungry from long travel times in the airport before my layover here, but it all comes into play. What a nice option at the airport! What's better than a hot bowl of noodles? We picked up a tray of sushi (one California roll and three nigiri - salmon, tuna, shrimp). Then hubby ordered a salmon bowl, and I got soba with tempura. The tables were all taken, so we switched to "to go." Hubby enjoyed his huge portion of salmon and rice. My soba came in a huge cylindrical cardboard container. It was enough for three people! There were green onions and wakame and a ton of soba noodles. The soup was hot and not overly salty. A heck of allot cheaper than Tomozaku closer in to the United gates (and a heck of allot easier to communicate with the Japanese staff at Sankaku over the Filipina staff over at Tomokazu). I doubt their udon and soba bowls travel very well but donburi should be a good option. I don't get what others are whining about this place. SFO is blessed with so much better food choices than most other airports. Usually the choices are limited to the likes of McDonalds, Quiznos and Chili's. The only alternative is usually the boxes they sell on the planes: the cardboard box usually tastes better than the contents. read more

SFO - - before security check-in, offers a couple of restaurants. Great concept - - this way, you can actually wait w/ your friends or family, even if they aren't traveling w/ you. There was a time, not so long ago, when friends would actually park the car at the airport, walk in with you, hang out w/ you while you waited to board your flight, have a drink, eat, etc. Those were the good days. Now, we have to remove our shoes and tolerate this "once you're in, you cannot get out if your life depended on it", and airport personnel WILL scream at people to remove their laptops, remove their jackets, take out your pacemakers, and so forth. Hell, I miss the days when you get off the plane and as you come through the gates - - someone who loves you is AT THE GATE waiting for you. You could always tell the good ones from the bad ones by who did that, and who waited curbside. Now, I have no test to disciminate the good ones from the duds. Ahh. The good old days. Well - - SFO is bringin' it back. Kind of. Prior to going through security - - Sankaku was one of the 2 or 3 places we could eat at in the Alaskan Airline terminal. Just because we were hungry and just because Japanese food sounded better than Burger King on that morning - - we opted to try it, though we were traveling together. NOT HALF BAD!!!! We ordered the Udon - - which was quite decent. We ordered the beef curry over rice - - which was also quite decent. With 2 orders of diet coke, it came to $24, if I recall correctly. Steep airport prices, but you know what - - not too shabby!!! We also bought one package of california rolls and one another thingie of sushi. This was after we had our meal, so I just packed them for the flight, just in case. A couple of hours later, aboard the flight in mid-air, we chowed down on that stuff. Great? No. Again - - not half bad... not bad at all!!!! Frankly, it beats eating at Sbarro or some cockamamie "restaurant" that serves junk for food and knows you'll eat it too because there's nothin' else to eat and you can't get back out no matter what! They made me Ramen soup which was vegetarian. Was it the best soup I've ever had? Of course not... but did it comfort me from a hangover from wine tasting the day prior? Hell yeah it did! Also had the seaweed salad - they can't really mess that up, it's imported from Japan. Solid salad, and a good portion. Husband was brave and went with the sushi.
