I used to come here often back when I used to go to College of Staten Island. I would usually order their lunch special of bento box w/ Salmon Teriyaki. The bento box comes with california roll. For the past 4 years that I used to eat in Mitoushi, they never had a problem with substituting the california roll with a roll i preferred such as Shrimp Tempura roll. Usually they'd let me know that its possible and that i would just have to pay an extra dollar. No big deal and I completely understood. I was always satisfied with my order back then. Today, I ate at Mitoushi for the first time in over a year. I ordered the same lunch special, bento box salmon teriyaki. I asked if I could substitute the california roll with shrimp tempura. Jeff, our waiter, was in the simplest terms full of $hit. He said that it wasn't possible because the california rolls are already "made in the back" and i guess it would be a hassle/a waste if they substitute it with something else. I then told him that Ive been going there for years with this request and I never had a problem. I was also willing to pay extra because I know it includes shrimp. He said no and that they are now under new management. I told him it would be a waste of food since I wont be eating that california roll anyways. His solution to the problem - order the shrimp tempura as a side order and they will leave the california rolls out of the bentox box (while I still have to pay for the full price). Um, no Jeff, don't try to be slick with me. First off, who has "pre-made rolls in the back" its a sushi restaurant. Its supposed to be fresh and made on the spot so I know your ass is lying. Second, if you guys are in new management you guys definitely need to get your act together. Third, the customer service is terrible. Jeff is not very friendly, he rushes you and his responses are very rude. This will be my last time going to this place. There are better sushi restaurants on Staten Island that provide FRESH food and great customer service. p.s. If the restaurant doesn't allow substitutions anymore, STATE it in your menu. Staten Island is known for mediocre restaurants. It lives up to the expectation. This place supposes to be Japanese restaurant. When you walk in the lighting level screams Chinese. The menu has a few innovative items like fried Jalapenos topped with spicy Tuna. The sushi is good but the smoked salmon was barely smoked. A cheap grade but not bad. The Toro however was off, and not the freshest. Then came the joy and the insult. Turns out we were there during happy hour, all drinks were 50% off. As we a had a coupon that lured us to try this place, we were challenged by the "manager" with the fine print (4 point font) that we had a choice, either the coupon or happy hour special. Each member of my family ordered the Lion King roll which was our favorite. This time the shrimp tempura was, cold and stale. It was so bad I spit it out instantly. I brought it to the attention of the waitress. The waitress and manager had the audacity to say that it's impossible for it to be stale, it's made fresh each time. I've never even had tempura this cold and stale in my life including delivery! So we simply asked to order something else instead, (which is already an inconvenience since this was our favorite thing to get!) The waitress just walked away instead of taking our new order, we already had waited so long to get her attention in the first place. She came back and said that she talked to the manager and instead of being apologetic for the terrible food and service she said she'll take it back but said "next time don't order chicken or shrimp tempura then, so we don't waste food" There won't be a next time because after going here regularly for the past 10 years, since it was called Mitoushi Sushi, I will never be coming back. read more

It was my favorite sushi place ( take out or delivery) for last 3-4 years. It is too noisy there on the weekends. They may change chef or something else happens to their business. For the last 3 times rolls have no taste, falls apart, barely have fish , rice is not cooked the way they used to cook, Chicken teriyaki was not edible at all. I called them twice with my recommendations ( not asking for refund) but I guess they didn't care. I waited 2 months and gave it another chance... Ordered rainbow roll and American Dream roll. This is my least favorite sushi place I have ever been to. The staff makes you feel so uncomfortable and watching every bite you eat. I had a hair in my food they fought with me that it wasn't their hair. My chicken from the chicken tempura had grizzle in it. Then at the end when it cAme time to pay she told me not waste so much food , referring to a little bit of fried rice that I didn't eat. Next time don't waste. Used to come to mitoushi all the time when I was younger because it was the cheapest and not too far from where I lived. Decided to come for dinner today and I have to say I will not be returning. The water they gave me had white chunks of something floating in it, my boyfriend's sushi had hair in it, and the girl took so long just to get me spicy mayo when there were 3 waiters for only 4 tables. The sushi is nothing special and now that the prices have gone up there's no reason for me to choose to come here when other places have better quality sushi for the same price. read more

Do not waste your money at Mitoushi Sushi. Staten Island has so many other sushi restaurants on the island that are actually worth your money. Sure, Mitoushi's prices are on the cheaper end but the quality of their fish is so bad that I instantly regretted eating my spicy salmon roll after the first bite. I used to frequent this sushi place because of their affordable prices and friendly staff but their quality has definitely gone down over the past couple of years while their prices have gone up. The only reason why I'm still giving them a 2 star rating is because I have no gripes with their service. It's a shame that their food is no longer fresh. Been there a number of times over the past few years. I had a good time every time I went. Weekdays and weeknights I've never had to wait for a table or too long for my food. It gets crowded Friday and Saturday nights (duh) so I'd call ahead, although i'm not sure if they take reservations. Food is good and inexpensive, as far as sushi goes; the service could be a little faster, but overall I'd definitely rate it as one of the best sushi places on SI. read more

I'm really into sushi. It's one cuisine where I'm totally spoiled because I lived in Tokyo for a year and had amazing sushi almost daily. Or Manhattan, for that matter. Instead, I expect them to be on the same level as a sushi place in Hoboken, NJ - a solid 3-star place. Unfortunately, Mitoushi doesn't make the mark. I ordered the Lover Cruise for Two, which is $36 for something like 12 pieces of sashimi, 10 pieces of sushi (nigiri, which is a wad of rice topped with a slab of fish), an eel roll, and California roll. Which is an excellent deal for two people. The sashimi is fine: fresh, generous, thick slices. There was salmon, tuna, whitefish, the usual suspects. Nothing fancy. But the sushi was off - the rice was dry and bland. Even my boyfriend, who is from the Midwest and never had sushi until about 6 years ago, commented, "what is wrong with the rice?" He then proceeded to pick apart the nigiri, leaving behind the rice and only eating the raw fish top. Yes, it was quite possibly the worst sushi rice I've ever tasted in a restaurant... ...no wait, there was some Italian deli that sold sushi made out of regular sticky rice that was mushy and overly dense and breadlike and, oh god, I just want to erase that memory from my mind... (Perfect sushi rice is an art and is difficult to master. However, most sushi places, I'd give their rice a grade of C+ or even B-) Anyways, so Mitoushi had the 2nd worst rice of any sushi I've had. I'd give it a C-, teetering on D+. Which pisses me off because now I'm too scared to order any of the specialty rolls. And their eel roll and California roll? Awful. And, as for the eel roll, besides the same yucky rice, there was barely any eel. I've had tons of eel rolls in my life and this was hands down the WORST eel roll ever. I will say that the miso soup was nice - it had bits of seaweed in it. And the restaurant is nice (although patrons get loud and the techno music is awful). And the wait staff is really great. While the price is decent, I just don't see myself coming back here again. The rice just kills me. I think I'll try Tenzan Sushi next. Slight tangent: I accept that people like cream cheese in their sushi, and I'm all about fusion cuisine, but certain things are incredibly vulgar. I saw people eating sushi with forks. Staten Island is the ONLY place I've seen such things. I find the above to be in poor form and indecent. I've been coming here loyally since it opened as mitoushi sushi years ago. I would definitely come back here! My cousin and I ordered sake, spicy edamame, vegetable soba noodles and fried icecream. It pains my heart to write this review. This used to be "the place" for sushi on Friday nights. I was there with friends every single week without fail. Plus I would order lunch from there to work all the time. That was until they got sloppy. Real sloppy. The got killed in their last few Dept of Health inspections for roaches, "sewage flies", and other vermin. That was it for me. I LOVE sushi so much, but I cant take a chance on getting sick on it, and I skeeeve bugs more than I can say. This is a shame because the staff is great, and it was once a very busy, successful restaurant. It was so great at one time, the owner opened 3 more locations in brooklyn. I guess he just got spread too thin and important cleaning tasks fell through the cracks. SUCKS. Makes me sad. read more

I f'in love it here! They just do it just right. It's not the best sushi on the island but it is the most reliable sushi. It comes good every time and I'm just used to the way they do things here. Everytime I come here I am disappointed. So, now I stopped going. The first time I had them, I though good sushi and heaps cheap price. However after that their sushi was just plan bad. You are paying for 85% rice and seaweed and 15% sushi. Not to mention the last two times I went there I had fish scales still on my sushi. What can I say, it was right down the block from where I was living so I didn't mind walking to pick up my food. Now I just drive to Nakata, Hokkiado, Saki One, or where ever. read more

This was a usual go-to sushi restaurant for me and my friends. I'm not so sure anymore after today's experience. Everything was going well up until my order of chicken teriyaki came out from the kitchen. Basically I ordered sauce on the side and when it came out, the sauce was traditionally slathered on. I informed the waitress I ordered sauce on the side and she questioned me but I politely asked her to bring me a new one. About two minutes later she comes back with wet chicken and half my vegetables removed from the plate. REALLY? It was gross. I wouldn't eat it. We told the waitress again and she continued to question us. She offered to bring me a new one but I refused, my sister had already eaten and I was annoyed. We refused to pay for it and it wasn't until we were getting ready to leave the manger came and asked if I wanted a new one. Like ummm no, I'm leaving now you should have came out five minutes ago and offered me a free roll or something. This experience aside it's a good place to go to for cheap, decent sushi. I'm going to stay alway for a while though. The customer service is crap. read more

One of the best sushi spots on Staten Island. The food has been great each time that I have dined in or ordered a delivery. Their rolls are a bit smaller than your average sushi roll, but the price is cheap as well, so that explains it. Friendly staff, good customer service, and great food.
