I came here for breakfast with a client and we were led to a nice spacious, circular booth seating in the dining area, perfect for conversation. My experience this time with the food/beverage, though, was just ok. I ordered the hot chocolate and a plain croissant, but afterwards, our server came back saying they don't have plain. So I ended up ordering a ham & cheese croissant, which wasn't the best pairing with hot chocolate. I'd also had higher expectations of the hot chocolate, which wasn't hot at all--so I had lukewarm melted chocolate with lukewarm steamed milk. It took a while to be served, so maybe it was sitting out for a while. Since I was with a client, I didn't want to interrupt our discussion and just let it be. My friend and I went for a late lunch. Service is excellent. Atmosphere very nice and comfortable. Food is very** average. I mixed and matched from the brunch menu and lunch menu. I tried the avocado toast for an app. Overall the ingredients were good quality but the flavor was severely lacking. Bland. The pasta dish was disappointing. I was excited for some tender and delicious lamb ragu but it tasted like dry ground beef. I almost thought there must have been a mix up and maybe I was eating their bolognese. I did happen to enjoy and really like their signature cake principessa. my friend ordered it and thought it was just ok- I actually really liked it. I tried the tiramisu but it was not my favorite- heavy cocoa powder layer and very thick cream layer - the actual lady finger/cake part was non-existent. My favorite thing to order, especially on a whim, on my way home after a long day at work, is the hot chocolate. The hot chocolate here is not the typical kind that you can get anywhere in the city - it is made in thge style of European Sipping Chocolate. The dark chocolate is slightly acidic, with just the right level of bitter notes, which are in perfect harmony with the european-level sweetness of the drink. Don't be fooled by the size of the drink - it is quite rich and very satisfying. The hot chocolate comes with a small side of steamed milk, which you can add to your preference. If you've never had this beverage here before, I recommend taking a sip of the hot cocoa as it is served, and adding in a little bit of milk at a time (about 1/2 to 1 tsp at a time), and tasting it along the way to find the perfect balance for you. The hot chocolate here is worth going out of your way for, and is worth the wait to have it at the restaurant itself, if you're going at a busier time (although I rarely ever experience a wait for the bar). read more

So I wanted a cake from here for my birthday- (real bad). My excitement had her bewildered and then slightly annoyed- seriously she could have asked me if I want a coffee or something to go with that but nope. So I didn't request one. I bought the cake slice over to the bar and proceeded to video record me unboxing it. No one was there except me. After the video I took the cake to my office and OH MY LORD it was amazing! The flavor profile, the texture, the color, the hints of marshmallow and lemon - THIS is how you make a BIRTHDAY CAKE!! They also offer the busch de Noel a Christmas Log which gave me nostalgia as I remember my father used to order that specific cake for my Christmas birthday in the past. The mall entrance takes you past their wine fridge and a well-appointed bar that is stunning. Your eyes take you up to the ceiling and then to the banquettes and tables, everything perfectly laid out. The drinks from the bar were well-crafted and delicious. The staff is very friendly, courteous and efficient. We started with a luscious beet & avocado salad with feta. The linguini with clams was out of this world fresh and delicious, as was the Sant Ambroeus ravioli (spinach and ricotta w/sage, Parmigiano-Reggiano). I was surprised to see my favorite dessert, so hard to find, on the menu: principessa. It is a lemon sponge cake with vanilla pastry creme &whipped cream, topped with almond marzipan, and it is not to be missed! It was the perfect ending to a perfect meal. She is the absolute definition of hospitality. She was extremely thoughtful, accommodated all our preferences, brought in extra surprises, and made sure every detail was perfect. It's been a long time since I've experienced such impeccable service. We had a pre-set menu, since we were a large party, and everything was fabulous! - Our server sent me out gluten-free bread, which I appreciated immensely, as I am almost never able to eat bread. - The prosciutto was TOP NOTCH (and I am super picky about this one). We stood out like a sore thumb as we were in sneakers and leggings but the staff was polite and never made us feel uncomfortable or out of place. I need to come back for the bakery- it all looked fresh and smelled like little Italy. The menu is easy to read and has lots of options. I wish I remembered his name! Complimentary bread was so yummy. Imola is a tequila-based cocktail with watermelon, ume, and habanero shrub flavor. The ingredients all sounded refreshing together, but it really tasted like traditional Chinese medicine to me... Definitely not my fav cocktail. Crudo di Cavolini is a raw shaved brussels sprouts salad with a ton of parmesan, toasted hazelnut, and dried cranberries. It's very simple but extremely filling and flavorful. I really enjoyed this salad. Tiramisu is to die for and probably one of the best ones I've had. The quality of the dessert really shined. It gives off an exclusive fine dining vibe with a bar/ cafe and dessert place on the ground floor and an Italian restaurant on the floor above it. We ordered a latte and the Sant Ambroeus cake, which looked rich and had the most reviews. The coffee was good. However, the cake was dry and stale. We couldn't go beyond a few bites, which was a huge disappointment. The service was pleasant. All in all, I am not sure if I'll be returning for the coffee and dessert again. We ordered an arugula salad and what came was what looks like shaved fennel and spinach salad.... 3) prosciutto and mozzarella. I love to pair this appetizer with olive oil and balsamic and the bread that they give you. Entrees: 1) lasagna which was crispy on top and cheesy on the inside but light enough to eat before a night out. This lasagna was perfect and one of my favorites in the city! 2) The cheeseburger with caramelized onions on top was good however, we ordered the burger medium well and it came medium rare. That option wasn't offered to us and as such I have marked them down as we were told to sit in a booth. Food quality is great, staff were nice enough and coffee was excellent. Reservation Experience (5/5) - They accept reservations online via Opentable for up to 4 people. My group was 6 people so I called the day before and there happened to be some availability. When we got there, our window table was already prepared for us and the hosts were very gracious. Atmosphere (2/5) - Let me put it this way, the atmosphere isn't for everyone. The decoration is beautiful - very warm, high ceiling, feels like luxury. The chandeliers are a beautiful touch. The music was very quiet and the majority of the noise was from the quiet chatter of other diners. The silence was almost uncomfortable, and not the most inviting. Like I said, lovely, but not for everyone. Food (2/5) - Don't get me wrong, the food was high quality, but nowhere near filling. The portion-to-price ratio was disappointing. They did give us each 2 slices of bread that were individually wrapped which was a nice touch, but the meal was otherwise not memorable. I ordered the Ravioli Della Casa which was decent, but comparable to the spinach ravioli one can purchase at Costco (it is my fav). Servers were courteous but slow, while we were eager to rush to another restaurant to get satisfaction that we could not achieve here. Honestly, after all of this, Sant Ambroeus is still worth checking out solely to appreciate the beauty. However if your stomach is grumbling, I would go elsewhere.
