We went to Sara J's per the recommendation of a local resident. This was a very good suggestion! The staff was warm and welcoming. Thank you Fran for service with a smile, Chase for the personalized greeting and hug, and the staff for a cheerful night. We felt that we were amongst friends. The setting of the place is authentic to its location on the water. It's not in the middle of tourist attractions, but definitely worth the short drive. There was an option for seating inside or on the deck. The food that we ordered was cooked to perfection. You can tell they've been doing this for years. Have you ever been to a place that disrespected the delicate nature of shrimp, cooked your scallops to rubber and oyster content was questionable? You WILL NOT have that experience here. There is a balance to cooking all seafood just right. Sara J's has it mastered. OK, call me petty, but I judge a restaurant's real quality by the cleanliness of the bathroom. I'm really sad to leave this review. I don't know what's happened to this fine dining establishment but it's not the same as years past. Seems to be run by a crew of teenagers too busy to socialize to perform any work. We watched waiters stand and chat while customers waited. The food was ok and tasted average but nothing special about it. I was never offered a refill on my drink. Is the same owner in place or has this place been sold? It's been one of our favorites for many years but I don't think we ll be back. And a side note, my husband had stomach issues for hours afterwards. read more

Several years ago this was my favorite place to eat. The seafood casserole was wonderful and other items on the menu were also exceptional. However, I returned last night and was so disappointed. The seafood casserole had no seafood in it. It was largely dressing with no crab in it, no scallops and only 2 shrimp. There was little to no sauce and was very sticky in your mouth. My friend ordered broiled fish, green beans and a baked potato. The portion of fish was very small for the price and was cooked horribly. The baked potato never arrived and the green beans appeared to be from a can. When our appetizer arrived, we asked for some small plates which also never arrived. I was so saddened by the meal and the service because this use to be a fabulous place to eat. I will not return nor will I recommend this place to any of my friends read more

While the food was ok the staff made it worse. We did not have refills on drinks or asked if we'd like more wine...I would have loved another. The only plate she took as pre-bussing was a half bowl of slaw that I was taking with half the food we didn't eat. Believe me...I had 2 empty plates at the front of the table left. What a disappointment!!! Have been coming to Sara I'd for years. Food and drinks have always been so good. We should have known when we arrived at 7 pm and the parking lot was almost empty. We had a table of six. Four of the six drinks tasted like they were made by a 16 year old that had no clue how to mix a Manhattan or Old Fashion. Then the food Raw Oysters were excellent, but that was were it ended. Broiled Grouper appeared old and mealy (broiled). Bake potato was old and had been in the warmer for days. 1st timers since moving here- did not disappoint! We were seated on patio, which was equipped with heaters. Such a beautiful view. Service was prompt, knowledgeable and courteous. Started with basket of warm hush puppies and honey butter. Shared appetizer of calamari, tasty breading! Then early bird menu items of fish and oysters, super fresh and tasty, while hubby had sirloin, cooked perfectly. Cheese grits were outstanding, and sake was light and delicious. We had driven around for almost an hour trying to find somewhere that didn't have over an hour long wait. We got here and I had to wait a few minutes to get up to put our name in (it was packed) but they sat us as soon as we got to the hostess stand. We got seated and the hush puppies were great, salads were good. We had to wait but it was a reasonable amount of time. We come here every year and will continue to! I was excited about eating at Sara J's since I moved here. What a disappointment!! The hush puppies were stiff and tough. Clam Chowder had very little clams, loaded with bacon and extremely salty. The coleslaw was old, watery and tasteless. The fried scallops were reheated, bland and soggy. Save your money, don't bother eating here. It's very deceiving from the outside and website. Sadly I have to give a 1 star. We arrived at 7:15 and were told there was a 30 minute wait. We were seated in 20 and were excited to order what sounded like a great meal of sea bass stuffed with crabmeat and a baked potato, which I was dying for. We realized it was crowded and watched around seeing who was eating and who was or should be next. There was a large party of 18 that should have been served before us and 3 tables seated after us. As I watched the large table getting served we realized our waiter hasn't been around asking if we needed another drink or anything. I wish I would have read the reviews before eating here tonight. We have eaten at SaraJs in the past, and remember it being amazing, but times have changed and not for the better. The view is quaint, service was attentive and hush puppies were great, but other than that the food was awful. I sent crab soup back thinking it was a fluke and an ingredient was left out...it was that bad. The broiled seafood on the main course was rubbery and tasteless. We were told to visit by a local. We got hush puppies while we waited for our food. Good cornbread type. The salad that comes with the entrees was a good size. I got the ribeye- was cooked just the way I wanted and tasted great!! Mom got the blackened grouper and loved the cook of the fish...also liked the sauce that came with it. A key lime/mango Dad got the seafood sampler plate with fish, crab & shrimp. He said fish was ok but loved the shrimp & crab. Cocktail sauce was great. Overall we were very happy!! My mother loves this restaurant and we stop every year while on vacation. Let me say, it is not worth the hype at all. The food is subpar and the prices are RIDICULOUS! My boyfriend and I spent $70 on two entrees and a bowl of soup. I didnt even finish my entree - shrimp scampi - which is not a hard dish to make. The shrimp was okay, but the pasta tasted like it had been cooked for 30+ minutes... soft and gummy. My boyfriend's dish - a steak and fries - was undercooked. The to go server was nice, but that's about all I can say that was good. Spend your money elsewhere. The beautiful views are not worth it. read more

It's very difficult for me to give this review but I feel I must do so because over the years I've recommended it as the best seafood in Myrtle Beach. 1. The quality of the food has diminished over the past two years. The hush Puppies are substandard. I was shocked. 2. My husband ordered the fried shrimp platter. The size of the serving has changed but not the price. A $24.00 platter which was served on the children's or senior platter was small and the breading has definitely changed. Sara J's was known for fresh, lightly breaded ship. I'm sorry to say it was neither. 3. I ordered the stuffed shrimp. I was server four shrimp with a small portion of (maybe) crab meat. It was topped with (maybe chowder or mushroom soup). It was not at a temperature that I felt safe to eat. The shrimp did not taste fresh. I asked my waiter, politely to warn it. He did but my plate came back with 3 shrimp instead of four. 4. The baked potato was great! The Bahama Mama was maybe a four. Certainly not unusually good food but adequate. My main complaint with Yelp reviews is people not "managing expectations" about our restaurants. PHENOMENAL! Not only was the food good, but service was excellent. We waited a little over an hour for food, due to their kitchen got backed up. No complaints or anything, I get it I work in a restaurant. Our server WITHOUT EVEN SAYING ANYTHING BECAUSE WE DIDN'T went and had her Manager remove a meal which they didn't have to do!
