My husband and I went to Sara's Kitchen for a late Saturday morning brunch on the advice of some friends. It was exactly what we were looking for! He ordered the apple sausage scramble, I had the bacon avocado eggs benedict. We both ordered tall glasses of juice, one orange, one tomato. From the exterior this dinner doesn't warm the heart. It looks a bit like a whole in the wall. Some might thing even after entering, it retains that image. But if it does, it is certainly a very homey and congenial hole in the wall. The best I could tell Sara and her parents own/operate this little jaunt. They great all of their customers with a warm "Hello, it's so good to see you," and from the replies it seems like many of the customers do repeat business. The menu's are plastic laminated (easy to clean syrup from) and the table clothes are a checkered blue and white number. It feels like the kind of place you'd find in a small Midwestern town. The food was excellent. I am usually not a huge fan of hollandaise sauce. It can be so rich, or too tangy. As such, I order it on the side. The hollandaise sauce that came with my order of eggs benedict however, was rich and buttery. Like smoothly warmed cheese. It was delicious and found myself wanting to lick my knife to get every last bit. The bacon on the benedict was a far cry from that you'd find in your local grocery store. This was a thick meaty slab of meat, grilled into a tasty crisp. My meal came with O'Brien style home fries (home fries with fried onions and green peppers). Oh, these onions were so sweet and juice. They were the perfect compliment to the healthy dose of hot pepper sauce I topped everything off with. On to the scramble... on the rare occasion I make eggs at home I always make a scramble. They are great because you can add all sorts of left overs to them; it's part of their charm. This scramble was unusual in that it appeared (not positive here) that the eggs were actually friend separately from the sausage and vegetable goodness. I'm not sure of this, but the eggs glistened veggies weren't coated with egginess like I was used to. Unusual, but it really works. Um...have I mentioned...I LOOOOOVE breakfast. I've tried Sara's twice now and I think it's awesome! It's a bit tough to find as it's kinda tucked away in a neighborhood area. There's some parking in the lot, but it's small. Good thing is there's plenty of street parking. My sis was visiting and we wanted to grab some breakfast grub before heading up to the city on New Year's Day. We dropped by Bill's (another great breakfast joint!), but alas they were closed. Good thing Sara's was open! The actual restaurant looks like it used to be a house that was remodeled. It's a simple clean and a Now...onto the food! I got a simple Chicken Apple Scramble with hash browns. The scramble was cooked well and there were HUGE chunks of chicken apple sausage in it. The hash browns were delish! They were nice and crispy on the outside without being burned. Did I mention they covered half my plate? Win! My sister got their corned beef hash (it's home made!) The hash has got some big, delicious chunks of beef in it. I'd def consider getting this for myself next time! The service was friendly and the food came out relatively quickly. The food is a bit pricier than your regular diner fare. I'd say expect to spend about ~10 per person, but it's good stuff. If I had to compare I'd say Bill's is similar, but offers some more interesting fare while Sara's offers delicious hearty fare. You can't go wrong coming here for some grub. read more

Had the pleasure of stopping by Sara's Kitchen while moving my sister into college. The service was great and the food makes me want to drive back to San Jose for another helping. After years of driving by this place, and seeing it packed on weekends, I decided to give it try. The long-time Santa Clarans -- who I know -- have it given this place mixed reviews, so I've been a little hesitant to go. I had the fish n chips. Okay, I know that this is probably NOT the place to order fish n chips, but that's what I felt like having. (Most people seem to eat breakfast.) Three stars: Fries were thick-cut and delicious! Fish was above average, but a little on the small side for the price. One star: I didn't appreciate the staff member vacuuming around patrons -- including me. And while I realize that the place was about to close (in 15 minutes), and the staff member was probably eager to tidy-up before clocking out, he could have waited until all of the guests were done eating! I felt like I was eating, fish n chips n dust. Subsequently, I ate my dish as fast as I could and left. Final note, the place needs a good deep-cleaning, and newer, sharper knives. Never have I ever been disappointed at this restaurant. I love the food, the atmosphere and the staff! I've been here 4-5 times and my experience only gets better with each visit. Garbage service, incredible food. So polarizing, and incredibly dumb. The food is fantastic, but the service is downright terrible. Staff are habitual liars, and incredibly biased. Came in as a large group, waited 50 min. for a table. Meanwhile, groups the same size as us who came way later got seated ahead of us. Several lies accounted for. We were seated outside -- and when orders came in we wanted to order milkshakes. "Sorry" came the answer, and apparently their machine was broken. OK, no problem. Go inside later to use the restroom and find out one of their customers is having a milkshake. So all of sudden, where did this "magical" repair come from? So I ask another waiter if I can order a milkshake. SAME FRICKIN RESPONSE. MACHINE BROKEN. I have to collect myself as I point out a customer inside enjoying a milkshake. "Oh, the machine is working, oops". Not only liars, but incredibly lazy. Completely terrible service, but the food was amazing. Far better than most of the Americana diners I've been to. Found this little joint on a walk to 7-11 across the street and decided we wanted to try something new this weekend rather than go to Denny's like we have been recently. We got there around 8am and there was no wait for seats (unlike Bill's Cafe lol). It was a little cool out so we didn't opt for the outdoor tables. I let slip on the way in that it was our first time there, but we were treated well by all the staff. They must have a tip-sharing system because we were attended to by multiple attentive staff members who kept our water and coffee full, asked how our food was, and if we needed anything else. I got the eggs Benedict and it was tasty but I would've liked if my eggs and hash browns had been cooked longer (I'll know to ask next time). My partner got one of their cheesesteaks and he said it was one of the best he'd had! The wait time for the food preparation was incredibly short; we were impressed. Price point was a little high but we were cool with supporting a small business. Seems like they have a lot of regulars too; the staff knew their names when they came in. We went there for breakfast on a weekday around 9:30am. Place was fairly crowded, but there were open tables and we had no wait. We were seated immediately. Parking is a little cramped, not a whole lot of parking, so you may end up finding a place on the street. If your coming down Lincoln from ElCamino, the place is on the left and a LITTLE hard to spot. You have to pay a little more attention. If your coming up the other direction it is a lot easier to see. This place has been in business since 1992. The restaurant is housed in an older building that has been converted over(am guessing that) from some other business. As such, it gives the appearance of being a little worn. However, I would not let this factor discourage anyone from eating here. Inside it looks like an old building as well. However, the place is tidy and clean, with blue table coverings (protected by glass). The menu for breakfast is extensive and really nice for a breakfast experience. Any place that has multiple types of benedict cannot be bad!!! Right? Service was excellent. We were served quickly once our food was ordered. Our order was taken promptly. I was amused be cause we were addressed by four different terms (one for each of us). I got the impression that this was the personality of our server... who was quite friendly and professional. Price was right on average. Our experience for a breakfast place for four typically runs $60 to $80 including tip. This was around $72. So price is right in the range for what I would expect to pay. Quality of food was excellent. We had Eggs Benedict, Chicken Fried Steak, milk shakes(ugggh, for breakfast???), 2 cups coffee, omelette, and I forgot the fourth entree. I sampled everything but one entree and found them to all be tasty and of good quality. I would come back, and I would recommend this place. I have never commented on other peoples posts in my reviews, but here is one time I cannot resist. There is a one star post in the middle of August where the reviewer,as best I can tell, gave the review based on the fact that she wanted fresh blueberries on top of her pancake and not "hot" embedded in the cooked batter. Wow, harsh. If I ever open an eating establishment I hope she never comes to my place! I would not take her post seriously. Imagine what she would do if you did something worse.... PLEASE READ MY REVIEW. I had about the worst experience at a restaurant (ever) in my life this weekend at Sara's kitchen. Summary: -Food came way late. (~28 minutes to get our toast and pancakes) -Food was not made as ordered (Found meat in my vegetable omelet) -Manager lady is a scary woman and threatened me and my guest. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Came in around 10:15am. It was really busy so I was pleased to gotten seated right away. The waitress who took our order was friendly and nice. But...about 25 minutes later, me and my boyfriend were still waiting on our food. Nothing came out...for 25 mins. I looked around and saw that people around us were being helped and food was coming out quickly for them.So we keep waiting. Not even our toast or pancakes or fruit on the side came through. At this point, i figured they had forgotten about the order so we decided we'll wait another 5 minutes and if nothing came, we'd go eat elsewhere. About 3 minutes later and THANK GOODNESS. The waitress brings us the toast and pancakes. We scarfed them down in a matter of minutes. We were so hungry. Finally, things are moving along and the nice waitress brings out the food. I am halfway through my vegetable omelet when I realized there's something chewy inside. I forked through my bfast and found meat inside. The waitress was apologetic and offered to take the order off of the bill. I was upset at this point bc I don't know if I ingested any meat by accident in my haste and hurry to eat (I am strictly, not allowed to eat meat or cheese). But I was still appreciative for the efforts of the waitress. At this point I was annoyed and just wanted to pay and get outta there. I walk up to the cashier and am ready to pay. The bill was only $9 or so because of the mishap with the messed up order. The manager-lady looked at me with her stank face on, eyebrows crossed and said "Only one person eating today? Ooookay" I shrugged it off and said whatever. I just wanted to pay and leave. I didn't want to waste my breath telling her that the order I got was wrong. THEN shit hit the fan as soon as I heard these words come out of her mouth. "..........Well, do you plan on leaving a tip?" WHAT THE *EFF DO YOU MEAN BY THAT? Yes, Bitch, despite everything that went wrong today I left $6 on the table for the nice pretty waitress who was helping us. How do you have the audacity to talk to a customer like that? I was pissed. I went back to the table and removed the tip $$. (Maybe I shouldn't have done that). I come from a family who owns many successful restaurants throughout the Bay. I know what customer service is. I know that a manager or restaurant owner should never say something like that. My philosophy is, tips are not mandatory (unless you're in a big group) and should be earned. Anyway, I got into my car and the Manager lady comes chasing us out screaming "WHAT??? NO TIP??? NO TIPS!?!?!?" in front of everyone who was already eating. How embarassing for herself. She has no shame whatsoever. Things got worse when her SON came out and tried to threaten my boyfriend. My boyfriend tried to explain what happened, but he screamed at him and said "You disrespected my girl by not leaving her a tip. My mom didn't know she took the item off your order!...." and then somehow he got more enraged and said "I'm going to knock you out!" This place was really strange. I just got back from breakfast. It reminded me of this one time when I was in Colorado eating breakfast with my family. The place was packed (obviously sunday breakfast), and the workers looked straight out of a stereotypical diner in the movies. The only difference was that everyone eating was from SCU. The food was meh, had the chicken fried steak which was fine, their New York Strip and Eggs was not. It was good to try this place, because it's nice to try something new, but I probably won't be back. If you do go here, be prepared to wait, it's kind of a clusterf****, they didn't take anyones name and if you aren't paying attention someone will probably swoop your spot. I am typically pretty understanding about food service and restaurants, and I rarely feel strongly enough about a restaurant experience to decide on a first visit never to go back again. But I'm doing that right now, with Sara's Kitchen. I went for their supposedly stellar breakfasts with a friend of mine. I ordered a ham & cheese omlette, he has corned beef hash, and we split a short stack of pancakes. Add a couple of OJ's and you've got the makings of a pretty stellar breakfast. Until I found a hair in my omlette. Now, these things happen sometimes, and I was ready to just pull the little hair out, cut out the offending piece of omlette, push it off the side and go on my way. But when I pulled the hair, an entire clump of hair came with it! I calmly set the plate off to the side, and flagged the waitress. When she arrived I quietly explained the situation, and showed her the hair. She offered to have it remade for me, which I politely declined and told her I was done. She told me it would be removed from our bill. When we went to pay our check, the hostess was offended that we asked about removing the omlette from the bill. And even without the omlette, breakfast came to $20 - just for corned beef hash, a short stack and two juices! I am so disappointed by the experience, and I will not come back for seconds! read more

I live about 5 blocks from Sara's Kitchen so I've been meaning to try it for a while. Now that I finally got around to it I can't wait to go back. There are two types of family restaurants: the kind where you have to read it on the menu to know that it's a family business, and the kind where you know it is the second you step foot inside. Sara's Kitchen is definitely the latter, and that is reason enough to come here and support their restaurant. The walls are covered with pictures of family members, the same family members who work the register, take your order, and work in the kitchen. Food: Garden omelette - $8.95: The avocado was fresh and delicious. The hash browns were cooked perfectly, crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. My friends both ordered eggs benedict and really enjoyed their meals. They advertise their Philly Cheesesteaks here so I will have to come back and try one. If you like family restaurants then this is definitely a place that's worth checking out. I've been coming to Sara's for 3 years for breakfast. If I wrote this review 6 months ago, it would be 4-5 stars. I usually like to bring in new people and recommend the place to friends, however the last several times I've brought new people in, the service has been a little... brusk. Even downright rude once. Also, on my most recent visit the eggs Benedict were overcooked. When I politely informed the management the eggs were overcooked, instead of apologizing or accepting the feedback, I was told to next time order them runny. I have ordered eggs Benedict many times from many places, the yolks are not supposed to be cooked hard. Sadly, I think they've lost a customer for a while and I certainly won't be bringing friends if I decide to give them another shot. read more

Boyfriend's pick failed again. Vince is a Santa Clara native, so as we were leaving his mom's place, we were definitely growing super hungry. Since we were short on time and knew Bill's would be packed as always, he suggested we go to this breakfast spot. As we entered, I thought it was a great sign that it was packed, but we got immediately seated and when we were seated the manager or server didn't even bother cleaning the seats or table so we had to do it ourselves. Kinda grimey. When the server came up to greet us she seemed super friendly and ready to take care of us. I noticed there was a couple next to us who had been there a while and we totally got our order before them. If I were in their shoes, I would be angry (by the way I totally heard the guy make a comment about how we got our food first if they ordered something way simpler to make.) Fail kitchen staff. Even more of an epic fail was their food. I ordered an omelet with chorizo, avocado, some veggies and cheese with country potatoes. I also substituted my toast with a biscuit with gravy. The omelet was totally flavorless and super greasy. It was so greasy that every time I pierced it with the fork, oil would seep out. I didn't even bother eating it. As for the potatoes, they were undercooked and again really oily to the point that my mouth was coated in oily nastiness after the first bite. Last but not least, the biscuit and gravy was the most pathetic attempt of the Southern classic. The biscuit tasted like some store bought packaged crap and don't even get me started on the gravy. The gravy was so watery and flavorless that it tasted like they just stirred together flour and water to make it. This was the first breakfast ever in my life that I can say I absolutely despised. I'm not surprised that the server just took my untouched food to throw it away in the trash where it belongs, because I bet she knows how terrible their breakfast items are. Yes, I should have said something to make my experience better, but I'm sure like other reviews mentioned and clearly not caring that she sat us at a dirty table, the manager/owner wouldn't care to ensure that the customer left satisfied, so why bother. I don't see what all the hoo-rah was about. Seeing all 3 OJ orders, by SCU students coming in as two seperate tables, in 16oz glasses was very perplexing. I asked the cashier how much was a large OJ when I paid. She said $2.75 and pointed to the menu. I said, but I only got a small one and I pointed to my table. She calmly replied, oh, sometimes, we'd give a little more. WHAT?!!! I like Sara's Kitchen - I think they are a solid breakfast place. Good scrambles and well done omelets. Reliable. With that said - I'll be steering clear of the chicken fried steak in the future. IMHO, this was not a true homemade CFS. If so, I'm not quite sure what kind of beef or meat they are using. This reminded me of frozen cafeteria style CFS that you simply chuck in the deep fryer (which is not homemade IMO). I hate saying that because I really do like Sara's Kitchen - it's one of my favorite places. However - I hail from the Lone Star State where Chicken Fried Steak is the state dish. We Texan's take our CFS very seriously. Unfortunately, Sara's was not serious CFS. (I'm convinced that no one on the West Coast does a standout CFS). Alas, I will have to continue making it myself. Today's hashbrowns were good. The scrambled eggs overdone and not well scrambled. Toast better than usual. This place has the worst breakfast I have ever had. First of all, the service is horrible and slow. This inside of the restaurant feels dirty, and the workers aren't very friendly. The menu is overpriced for the crap that you get served. My ham and cheese omelet was way too salty and there was seriously no cheese in it. The pancakes were served warm and it was so hard that you had to use a knife to cut into it. And the side of butter had a nasty hair in it!
