We came here last week with some friends to meet for dinner in the area. I've seen it here for years and heard some great things about it. One of my friends that came with us raved about the pot roast so I thought it would be a good chance to try their Wed Special of Pot Roast. When we arrived about 6pm, we were the only ones in the restaurant so I am guessing this place is more popular on the weekends or for breakfast. Sara greeted us with a big smile and made us feel like we were one of her Portuguese/Italian family members. It was the night of the State of the Union speech so we sat up close to the TV they have there. My husband and I ordered the pot roast to share. Two other friends ordered the same for themselves and another tried the chicken fried steak. All came with mashed potatoes and some corn. I enjoyed my meal and thought it was worth the $9 price tag. It was a bit bland though and I had to add some salt but I didn't mind. I guess I would rather it be under salted then too salty to begin with. Very good and i would order it again. Definitely a friendly place and Sara is very personal and sweet to her customers. She is very outspoken but makes you feel comfortable. It was funny how she yelled from across the restaurant about us having dessert Ha! ha! It was like being at "home". Definitely would come back to try other things as well! First time here today. I was in the area so I thought I'd give this place a try. It looks small from the outside but there are actually quite a few tables inside. I ordered the #6 Omelette which had ham, bacon, and sausage and also a mocha shake. The omelette was alright. It tasted ok. Nothing that was overly exciting about it. I did notice that it was not as fluffy as the omelette that I've had in Bill's Cafe or Country Inn. The hash-brown that came with the order was just ok. I actually asked the waitress for an extra crispy hash brown, but received a regular hash brown. The mocha shake was just ok as well. Overall it was an ok experience with just ok food. Nothing that would make me enthusiastically recommend this place. I would say that it is on par with a Denny's. There are two breakfast places that are far superior to this place, and they are located close by. There is Bill's Cafe on The Alameda and the other is Country Inn on the corner of Scott and El Camino. Country Inn is currently being renovated, and is scheduled to open in August. read more

We were craving some breakfast yesterday, as were are known to do on a Sunday morning, and Gini said she'd heard good things about Sara's Kitchen. Well, we were in Santa Clara and had been thinking about hitting Holder's Country Inn, but the smaller places are so much more interesting. I was sold! On our way, we realized that it was Father's Day. Yeah, we're a little behind on certain holidays. So sue me. Any way, we figured all the breakfast places would be packed. Well, we lucked out; Sara's had a few people waiting, but they seated us in a matter of minutes. First impression: Small, friendly, family-run place with a regular clientele. Everyone seemed to be in a good mood and eager to please. The guy who seated us apologized for the wait a couple times, even though we hardly waited at all. They even offered us coffee while we stood near the doorway. Seriously, we would have been sitting in front of Holder's for at least an hour surrounded by idiots and screaming children, so this place was a godsend! Upon being seated, we were immediately served beverages and given a moment to peruse the menu. Rumor has it they make a killer cheesesteak (no veggie listed, however I'll bet we could work something out), but today was all about breakfast. Gini had a cheese omelet with home fries. The omelet was beautiful. Not one of those ridiculous "fluffy" omelets like you get at Flames; no, this was three beaten eggs spread evenly on the grill, layered with cheese and folded over like a triptych. This makes for a far better omelet, if you ask me. Better cheese integration, less air. It's more of a short order style than a Sunday brunch style, if that makes any sense. The home fries were very good. Big chunks of potato, cooked until tender and seasoned with a mystery spice blend that was probably mostly seasoned salt and herbs. No matter, it worked. I had Eggs Benedict. Now, as a vegetarian I normally order my benedict with no bacon and have to ask if I can get something else (usually avocado) instead. Our waitress, upon hearing the words "no bacon", immediately asked if I'd like avocado instead. No pause, no hesitation, it was uncanny. Her Kreskin-like mentalist powers carried over into her beverage-refilling abilities as well, because Gini never got below half a cup of coffee and my Coke was topped off several times. OK, back to the benedict. It was perfect. Nice runny poached eggs, just the right amount of hollandaise, a side of hash browns, I was happy. We also enjoyed a bowl of fresh fruit. Cantaloupe, watermelon, strawberries and bananas. All fresh and all delicious! Did I mention that our food arrived in record time? I swear to god it was a matter of minutes. Did I mention that at times it felt like we had two or three servers? In a good way, of course. I'm not sure exactly who was who, but I think we had a mother/daughter (or daughter-in-law) team serving us and a son checking up on us from time to time as well. Everybody was super nice! So, I could see this place being 4 or 5 star, so I guess this one will be a blip on an otherwise good record. Got seated fast enough. Ordered, got our water, then played the waiting game. Two tables were seated after us and got their food before us. Not cool. I ordered an omelet with hash browns since I figured that can't really go wrong. The hash browns were a decent portion size, but they were a little too brown/burnt on the outside and something feeling like wet mash on the inside. They definitely weren't dry because there was plenty of grease soaked within. The omelet (sausage specifically) was nothing more than egg that had been spread thin on a griddle, chopped sausage put on top, and then folded over. That was it. I essentially unwrapped the thin and flat egg cover and ate the sausage and egg separately. This was also greasy. Not exactly good eats. read more

I really wanted to like Sara's Kitchen because it's near a weekly meeting I attend and because I like to support small family businesses. Unfortunately, both times I've eaten here, I've been underwhelmed and a bit turned off. The first time, my Eggs Benedict (at $10) included egg shell in it and a dinky amount of potatoes. The second time, when I went to pay and asked if there was a tip jar, Sara herself just grunted toward a plastic cup to the side of her. I'm not going back. For Eggs Benedict though, I did just try Clarke's in Mountain View. They serve breakfast on weekends until 2pm, and their Eggs Benedict ($9.25) were fresh and excellent with a generous side of hash browns. read more

This is a true landmark diner, having everything you expect in a classic diner, without any extra frills. We stopped in on a chilly December morning, around 10 am on a Saturday. Predictably, a diner/brunch spot is crowded at that time, so we waited crammed into a small area by the door trying to stay warm and avoid tripping a server as they run by. First gold star for Sara's - they offered coffee to all of us waiting! They came through a couple of times to give warmups. That's just good service. It gave me the warm fuzzies about the place right off. One couple at a table had finished their meal and were lingering for at least 15 minutes while we were waiting. Eventually the manager went over and asked them to pay since there were so many people waiting. Good for her. Have a little self awareness, people! I grabbed the much written about veggie benedict. I was surprised by the huge chunks of very coarsely chopped veggies... They definitely don't get lost in the dish. It was veggie heavy and the eggs were perfectly poached. I thought the hollandaise sauce could have had a bit "more to it", but the two styles of hot sauce the waitress brought us made all right with the world. That and a side of crispy hash browns had me full for the day. My friend had the biscuits and gravy, which from the opinion of a Georgia girl, she rated decently. The diner is a no frills diner. Service was good, and fast. I wasn't the best or most creative brunch I've ever had, but it hits the spot, and would be my go-to neighborhood joint if I happened to live in the neighborhood. read more

For a table of 2 we only had to wait about 10-20 minutes or so which is pretty good for a Sunday morning brunch-time. There's plenty of street parking around the restaurant, but a small designated parking lot. The service here is great and the waiters are very attentive and quick. The 2 dishes that I've highlighted are the ones that I got and they were both good! I would recommend getting them. I'm a stickler when it comes to poached eggs and I believe that Sara's Kitchen poached their egg very well on the country benedict. I would definitely come again for a nice breakfast. read more

I did not go to Sara's for breakfast but dinner. My pal had a cheesesteak and I had fish'n chips. Neither of these could be considered good. The cheesesteak was a bit too dry and my fish'n chips tasted like some leftover fried fish fillets. Only two tables, including mine, were occupied. As far as I could tell, the folks at the other table did not leave a tip. I totally understood why. Upon leaving, I saw the waitress and the chef standing outside smoking very stinky, brown cigarettes. The smoke stank up the entire place. read more

I had occasion to go there with my 7-year-old son this morning. The food was reasonably good. When I went to the cashier to pay, I let him know, in a friendly tone, "I'd feel more comfortable if I could see the $value on the bill." It appears that the cashier took great offense to this and he told me, in a very rude tone, (paraphrased). "This Is the way we've been doing it for 20 years! If you don't like it, go to Denny's!" Reading other Yelp reviews now, it seems there have been other times when the staff's behavior has been poor. This type of response was completely uncalled-for. The fact that this was done in front of my son was simply disgusting. My son saw the man's reaction and I had to explain how the cashier's behavior was just plain wrong. Five star service and five star food. Liz was our server and she was super sweet and paid close attention to our table. I've been here before and have already been impressed by the food and prices but the service stood out this time. This place is way overrated. The service sucks. We got seated in a janky booth pretty quickly on New Year's Day at about noon for breakfast. I mean this booth is unacceptably uncomfortable. The seat was about 16-18 inches in length and your ass barely fits on it. We asked to wait for another table. No problem - she clears one for us and asks us to carry our menu, silverware, napkins and coffee to the new table. Thanks. The menu looks nice and is small with all the great staples for breakfast. We each ordered coffee and ice water. Had to ask again for the ice water as we only got coffee right off the bat. Orders placed and we then go empty on water and coffee. No service here to say the least. We get our food and she sees we are empty on drinks (we had been for 5 minutes already!) She says she'd be back with coffee. Nope, that was not the case. The burrito has salsa in it, so water was mandatory. We finished about half of the breakfast unattended for drinks. Finally, Sara herself walks by and we grab her for drinks. The lackadaisical waitress had way too many tables for her skill level. They served a breakfast burrito but don't have sour cream in the house. No cottage cheese either. The burrito was actually pretty good and the side of potatoes obrien were good as well. The bacon and cheese omelet was decent. The bacon was somewhat undercooked and the omelet could have been fluffier. Cheese was incorporated in the omelet and on top and seemed to be a blend of 2-3 different kinds of cheese. The hash browns were slightly overcooked. The toast was obviously made well before the meal was finished and was served rather dry and unappealing. Overall the food was 3.5 stars and the service was 1 star, so they get a 2 from me. The prices were steep as well; after tax, the total was $25 for two. They charge more than the average breakfast joint and their food is not any better. Still trying to find a place in the south bay that can compete with Bill's or Pete's that is closer to my new place in Santa Clara. This is definitely not it. read more

First off we came here as an alternative to a 45 minute wait at Bill's. Wrong move. After waiting only 25 min or so to be seated, we were seated outside. Chairs were metal not so comfy and the tables are six feet from cars parked/parking. Multiple people backing into the spots right next to us shooting exhaust right at us. The server did promptly take our order, but we didn't hear from him until he gave us the check. Food took way to long and arrived cold, as if it sat for a while. Wife's bun was burned and when the fries came, which by the way we're not included with the burger, I went to salt them and the shakers both were totally nasty!!! Looks like they haven't been cleaned in over a month. Next time we will wait at bill's. There was also a couple who arrived well after us and were seated well before we were and got inside seating which is what we would have preferred. Not cool. read more

This is the second time I have been to Sara's. The first time was many years ago. I don't remember my first experience, but I know it wasn't bad, or else I wouldn't have returned. This time, I was very disappointed. We were seated at a dirty table. Silverware was brought by a young lady who did not say a word to us, nor did she even look to see if the table was dirty. It took a while for our waitress to take our order. In fact, she came by, said, "I'll give you more time" and walked away. We were ready to order but she didn't even bother to find out. When I asked if I could have half hash browns and half breakfast potatoes, I was told that I would have to pay for a side of one or the other - weak. I didn't want more food, I just wanted variety. Our toast was brought out first. No butter on it, just packets of frozen butter. About 15 minutes later, when our toast was cold, our food was brought out. The order of eggs and Canadian bacon was actually eggs and ham. The only good part was the bus boy. My coffee was refilled several times and never allowed to get cold. Our waters and iced teas were refilled well before the glasses were empty. All-in-all, it was a very disappointing experience. I will not go back, nor do I recommend Sara's Kitchen to anybody looking for a satisfying breakfast experience. read more

Service is meh. The host, a young African American girl, was pretty standoffish, not welcoming at all. When we were seated, we were one chair short. The host then told us to ask the party seated next to us to ask them for a chair..um. that's your job. We had a party of 7 and though we were seated quickly, the wait for the food was pretty ridic. My boyfriend and I decided to try this place out on a Saturday around noon. The parking lot was full but we were able to find parking on the street easily. The place was packed but they had a table ready so we did not have to wait. I ordered the veggie scramble with country potatoes and my boyfriend ordered the linguica scramble with hash browns. My scramble was nothing special, the veggies seemed overcooked and the plate had a lot of grease. The potatoes were horribly overspiced I couldn't even eat them. We were running around nearby on Saturday and decided to stop in for a late breakfast. My guy had been here once before, and knowing my love of locally run joints, he figured this would be right up my alley. Since it was kind of between breakfast and lunch, they weren't very busy and we were seated right away. The server was friendly and nice, and patient with us while we decided what to order. I appreciated that they mostly kept my coffee refilled, (I only had to ask once.) I had the ham and cheese omelet with potatoes and fruit instead of toast. It was cooked well, and while nothing about it was bad, it all tasted VERY bland. The potatoes had good color and looked like they'd be flavorful. I did enjoy the peppers, but I was kind of baffled as to how they were so totally flavorless. Honestly, it was pretty disappointing. Although, i was pleasantly surprised by how ripe the fruit was. A lot of times when I get the fruit bowl in a restaurant it's pale and unripe, and kind of gross/inedible. My guy's omelet was better, and with the artichokes, onions, tomatoes, and Italian sausage, it was much tastier! I spied some other diners food, and I have to say the chicken cheese steaks and curly fries looked AWESOME. I would definitely come back for dinner, (although they are only opened very limited days for that) or maybe lunch,but I'd have to pass on their breakfasts. Ive been here twice and each time very satisfied. What I like most about this place is they are very efficient. I think there is two waitresses even at their busiest. Which doesn't seem like a lot but they do have a guy who refills drinks. Food comes out hot and pretty quick. I think for the amount of business they get, the food turn around is really fast. The last time I was there I ordered the chicken fried steak and my husband ordered corned beef hash. Both were delish! The corned beef was shredded. It looked really fresh! I'm totally ordering that the next time. The only negative thing I would have to note is that we were given burnt toast. I get the feeling this place is hit or miss. For my wife and I last weekend it was miss. We've been looking for a breakfast spot to replace the now demolished Country Inn Cafe up the street since, well, since they demolished the Country Inn Cafe up the street... Our issues were with Sara's Kitchen's service, food, and environment. Service - SLOW. We were literally at Sara's for an hour and twenty minutes, only about ten minutes of which was wait time. My water glass sat empty through my entire meal and I had to ask for coffee refills. We received toast well ahead of our meals almost in-lieu of our order, in a condemning "get comfortable, its gonna be a while" way. People who we noticed were seated the same time as us were finished with their breakfast and paying their bill before we even got our food! Food - The toast was so soaked and buttery it was collapsing while we tried to put jelly on it. I mean really, how do you screw up toast? My wife's Mexican Scramble was SO GREASY. As in, I went to cut a piece off with my fork to try it and grease poured out of it while I pressed. She ate about a third of it. My homemade corned beef hash was good, however. Relatively lean and perfectly cooked (and great with PepperPlant Sauce). Environment - It was hot inside, probably the result of the open kitchen. It was a nice cool day outside, in the high 60s but it was just uncomfortable where we were seated. Finally, the place could use a good cleaning. There was a kind of stickiness to the dining area, not the worst I've seen but I definitely didn't want to be there as long as we were. They're going to be around for a while just because of proximity to the university so give them a try, maybe we caught them on a bad day. After getting my holy on at the Mission church, we met up to have breakfast at Sara's Kitchen. It was my first time coming here on a Sunday morning and it was totally bustling. It's an unassuming restaurant nestled in the heart of suburbia, and has a total small diner feel. The restaurant was packed with SCU students and an assortment of families. I ordered an artichoke heart, sausage, and mushroom scramble with hash browns. The food came out fairly quickly, and I was greeted to some damn good hash browns that were done the way that I like 'em: not so much potatoes, and crispy. Awesome. The scramble didn't skimp on the veggies or sausage, and was awesome. Definitely a nice mom and pop diner in the heart of the "old quad" part of Santa Clara. It's much better than the Holder's down the street, and the service is great. read more

Came to this place on a whim. We were driving from Winchester to look for a place to eat dinner and just kept driving. From the outside, we had an inkling this may be a hidden gem and parked in their small awkward parking lot. After entering the tiny diner, we were greeted by a sweet lady and sat ourselves at a booth. It took a while to get serviced, even though there were only a few other customers. Our drinks also came after a long wait. I ordered the Sara's cheesesteak with a side of fries and the bf ordered the hangover scramble. Despite the fact that it was a "breakfast all day" menu, we weren't able to order pancakes or french toast. My food came out piping hot and tasted awesome, but looks are deceiving. The sandwich appeared full, but after a few bites, realized they didnt open the sandwich all the way, the bottom of the roll was greasy bread and no meat. But compared to my bf, my food was 5 stars. The eggs looked fluffy and fresh, the bacon was crunchy, and the sausage were the round patty, but the country fried potatoes were mushy and tasted weird, even after drenching it in ketchup. It was a "so, so" experience, but I doubt we would come back or even recommend it to anyone else. read more

My fiance works at SCU and passes by all the time. He says that on weekends, it's always packed. So we decided to try them out on a Friday morning, hoping we wouldn't have to wait for forever. It was still pretty busy at 11am on a Friday, but we were seated right away. I'm sure the small dining room probably doesn't help with the weekend breakfast rush. Our server was super friendly, and constantly checking on us, which was great. Our food came out in less than 10 minutes, which was even better. My corned beef benedict was delicious! I love sauteed vegetables with my breakfast. But it came out with hash browns when I asked for fruit. I know I could have sent it back but I was hungry. My fiance said his omelet was pretty amazing as well (the Greek omelet I think, with spinach and feta). I'm giving them only 4 stars because nothing really stood out to me over other breakfast places I've been to. It's just good standard breakfast food. Maybe if we lived in the neighborhood it'd be our regular breakfast spot, but we don't so it's not. But it's still worth a visit as a not-too-far alternative to Bill's Cafe. read more

you know those small diners you see in movies that are in the middle of no where? They look dumpy and cater towards farm hands and blue collared workers? Well Sara's is similar. I've been here a few times and each time I'm hoping that my craving for a good hearty breakfast will be satisfied. I really should've learned my lesson from the previous encounters. The service is hot or miss. Sometimes they're really nice and attentive, other times you're just waiting, being tossed a menu, told to hurry up with your order, food dumped in front of you, and BAM....here's your check. The tables aren't kept very well. The booths have holes in the seats, the table mats are sticky most of the time, spots on the utensils, and it's kind of a dungeonous feel to the place (unless it's really sunny outside). The food itself isn't too bad. They do a bunch of cheese-steaks in addition to their breakfast food. You can also get their cheese-steaks in the form of omelette's. The home potatoes are pretty good when they're cooked all the way through, sometimes they're half raw. It's a pure grease pit that is more of your lunch pail type of restaurant. Probably good if you have a massive hang over, but not for much more than that. read more

I found this place. It's been there for years. The food is standard diner fare. It's fresh and plentiful. I like the hash browns better than the home potatoes. The hollandaise sauce was pretty good could have used more of it. Servers and bussers are nice and quick with the refills. I'll try the pancakes next time. It's known for their cheese steaks. My boyfriend and I have been here around 5 times and we absolutely love this place. The food and service here never disappoint. I usually get the BLT or Berry French Toast! So good! Sara's Kitchen is a nice breakfast joint sequestered away behind SCU and serves a solid breakfast menu. The word on the street is that the cheesesteaks, chicken fried steak, and the corned beef hash is the business. However, I did some caloric accounting, and I thought I would just have something straight (that's a little new...) and simple. Scrambled eggs, crispy well done bacon, and home fries. Coffee and a water, I was happy. Service is lax, but still attentive -- never once did I ever have to ask for coffee, it always came to me. I'm a fan. read more

Been going to Sara's since the late-90's and. This is the spot in Santa Clara for Cheese Stake's and Breakfast. Never ordered a Omelet tho. Staff and Owners are really cool and always have treated my like family. It has a homely feel with about 10-16 tables and the only problem is parking can be an issue sometimes. read more

I was surprised to find the ground beef in my "Joe's Special" Scramble was just a frozen hamburger patty that had been cut up with a spatula. :- \ Simply out of convenience, I went back for a second time and ordered an omelette I knew they couldn't mess up. My father had been wanting to try this place as he had read in a local Santa Clara newspaper that it was worth trying. The place looked pretty clean inside, but very small with very limited seating. The people eating there looked like regular (Old timers). Pros: * Get service pretty quick since nobody is eating there Cons: * Very limited seating * Few people eating there (Speaks for itself) * Limited menu with most everything (10.00 or more) * No specials or values * Closes at 3pm on Saturday (I can see why) We won't be returning back to Sarah's Kitchen. read more
