This review hurts. Parking: 5/5, interior decor: 5/5, This place has so much potential but falls so far off. The "old school" diner is all there but they are not trying hard enough. The menu is extremely messy to where they had 7 menus all over the place. All in different font, style and color. I ordered the California burger and it's two small patties with Kraft cheese and two white bread. No condiments unless you ask. No napkins unless you ask. Might have been the worse burger I have ever had, nothing special for $9. There was zero AC, it felt about 85-90 degrees inside the place when outside was about 70 due to the glass window and sun glaring in. This is a great spot. I talked to the woman working there who said it has been there for 60 years! The menu was actually surprisingly large and I found it hard to make a choice but I settled on the California burger which comes with avocado and is served on sourdough toast. I ordered an $8 minimum of food to park on their lot because I was going to avoid Valley Fair parking out of principle, avoiding traffic, and supporting a small business. The food was great! It took a little while but as someone who worked in a kitchen, there just was no faster way because we were the first customers in a while and the grills had to be turned back on. The doors were open so it was chilly while we were waiting, but I'm glad it took 10 minutes because when we finally went in the mall, the shooting happened. While driving by it many times and thinking about it, I have never actually tried it until now. I thought the food was exceptional. It's simple diner food done very well. Customer service not very friendly this visit. We were not happy with the quality of the food at all. They added an additional $6.99 for a shake that was a substitute for a soda with a combo meal. The milkshakes alone are $7.99. I can see maybe charging an extra $3.00, maybe. Anyway, our burgers were tasteless except for the horrendous flavor of some yellow sauce that was poured over them yuk! I ate a piece of the meat with no sauce or anything on it just to confirm- yep, no flavor. The order of steak fries that came with the combo was barely enough for one person and again, no flavor. This was a take out order, eaten soon after leaving Burger Barn. If I had stayed to eat on premises I probably would have asked them to re-cook the order but then that can be a dicey thing to do LOL. So sad because we ate there about 5 months ago and we thought the guy behind the counter was friendly and everything was good and they didn't pour the sauce on our burgers that time (which they should always ask if you want it before they pour it on!!!). I've been meaning to do this for a long time. I seen this all the time. Today is the day, I check-it-out. I'm at the one and only Burger Barn in West SJ or Santa Clara this Friday. The building is in the shape of a Barn, that's very interesting and intriguing. It feels like I'm on a Farm already. I wanted something new and different today, so I went with the Veggie or Garden Cheeseburger, they let me know today is a Black Bean and Chipotle patty. The Burger itself is delicate, there's a good crust on it, it's bold, flavorful, and there's a hint of smokiness coming through. The Bun is toasty. Everything was so fresh. And the Onion Rings were so crunchy, they were fire. I'm slightly impressed, it was somewhat better than expected. There's nothing more All-American than a Cheeseburger. I was thinking this was going to be a 3.9-4.2 stars, this could be very well a 4.4 stars on a good day, but I give this 4.3 stars. That's a very high score. read more

After all the years I've lived in the bay I decided it was finally time to give this place a shot. I was craving a patty melt and that's exactly what I got here. You walk in and the decorations and music are basically frozen in time and just gives you that hometown feel. The food gives off very homemade lunch that hits the spot. A family owned place with friendly service and breakfast all day. Whilst there hamburgers get attention, the omelettes and other menu choices are tasty. They even have seafood, so there's something for everyone and plenty of outdoor seating. They close at 6PM, but that still allows for an early breakfast dinner if you feel the urge. I've never had a bad meal here. Everything is cooked to order and they provide drink refills. Sometimes when busy they bring you drink along with your food instead of when you pay. Tuesday afternoons a classic car club used to visit and they had music. It was like going to Bob's Big Boy in a previous decade on a smaller scale. The pandemic seems to have nixed this and recently about half the nostalgic metal signs inside were gone. I found many of those wonderful signs above the seating area inside belonged to car club enthusiasts and BB returned them. They've always served everything on paper plates, so the pandemic was an easy transition; especially with most of the seating area already outside. They made the covering of the outside tables better recently, so the sun isn't uncomfortable. Okay okay, let's talk burgers. I walked in really wanting to love this place. It has this classic 50s layout from the kitchen, to the dinning area, to the patio, to the parking, and honestly looks like a Sonic wet dream. In fact,I don't think they have changed a thing about it since 1959. However, there are a few things that leave a lot to be desired and this beauty that was full of potential, has let me down a bit. I ordered the bacon cheeseburger and small fries. The fries were the biggest let down here to be frank with you. I know, you're probably thinking "fries are fries why are you going to give this place three stars over fries?", but hear me out. The fries were not crispy and most of them were quite dense in the middle with no fluffiness. I don't like fries in general, and this place reminded me why. They gave me a shit ton for a small order, so I was excited to bite into a good fry and forget about life for a while, but instead bit into further crippling depression reminding me the small amount of joy I have left in this world comes from reviewing restaurants like this. The burgers were a little bit of a different story. First of all they were a mess to eat, and I think this can be avoided by not using shredded lettuce. This is not to say that shredded lettuce doesn't belong on a burger, in fact, I would argue the opposite. This place does not use the same shredded iceberg for texture that a choice place would; they use shredded romaine lettuce with the spine of the lettuce still attached which means it's not going to stay on the sandwich and will take a bunch of sauce with it. The burger is cooked well and the cheese is melted perfectly, but the patties are frozen patties. This is not an automatic disqualification, because it's all about how you cook and season it, which they did very well. The bun was pretty good and the burger had the right amount of tomato. I would give this burger a 6.1/10. All in all the restaurant is lost in time which has a sweet nostalgia to it, but unfortunately the food has been lost to time as well. It's not bad, but it needs to be updated to meet competition. Although, for the price this place remains competitive with all the other burger joints out there. It's definitely gives you that early 70s vibe. The burgers are made from scratch and are served on paper plates. I usually get the classic bacon cheeseburger served on sour dough. It never fails. On my last visit, the credit card machines went down after I had already ordered and thought that I paid but was later told that the payment didn't process. I had to leave and go get cash from an atm which was annoying because I was hungry but the food was still on point when I actually received it.
