Do you baklava? I baklava. This place makes the most awesome baklava ever =) Seriously. I absolutely love their baklava. I have had it for a few years as part of company to company Christmas gifts and things like that. However for the first time, I got to go here in person... The grub was awesome. My daughter loved the cookies that she ordered and I loved the baklava that I got as well. They have a ton of different options here and instead of selling it as you would think, it is actually sold by the pound (for the baklava). The service was attentive, but a bit aloof as i believe that we were a completely a typical customer. Overall though, we were well taken care of here and got some great desserts for very cheap. I gotta say though, that the baklava here is better than a lot of the homemade baklava that i have had and definitely head and shoulders above all of the other mass made baklava that ive sampled. I went to this place because I was looking for a piece of an Opera Cake. What caught my eye was everything they had online and then in person looked amazing. I mean really amazing. Sadly it ends at that. The cakes I had must of been made sometime last week. One was as hard as a sugar cookie. The sponge was tasteless and one bite is all I needed to tell me it ain't gonna get no better. I ordered some cookies and a few other treats to try but again my thought was they need to toss or donate their old baked goods. The service wasn't friendly or helpful at all but im not too mad about that. My coworker who is from Beirut told me to try this place out because I was looking for authentic middle eastern pastries specifically kunefe and halawa cheese rolls. I had seen them all over online and wanted to try it. Anyways i ordered some of each and with their rose syrup it was amazing. The kunefe with very sweet bread was a little overwhelming so next time i will try it without the bread and just some syrup on t but it tasted so good! The halawa cheese rolls were very good. On the way out i say a tray of baklava so i bought that to go. When we cracked it open to try it the syrup was running down and it was so amazing. I like more wet and soaking baklava rather than with little to no syrup almost dry because i want to taste it sweet. It is a dessert after all. I recently got married and a month ago I came to Sarkis to do cake tasting and instantly fel in love with all the flavors. The cakes were so light, so creamy, not too sweet and best part was they had zero eggy flavor. Many cake shops serve beautiful cakes but they are either dry and eggy or overly sweet and heavy. Sarkis made the most perfect and delicious and beautiful cake for my wedding and I regret not coming here for all my other special occasions, but from now on Sarkis Pastry will be my bakery of choice for all special events. Our guests absolutely loved our wedding cake and couldn't stop raving about it! I even had a few guests call and ask where we got the cake from. Best baklava in LA County! this is not the sopping-wet, honey-drenched variety. These incredibly delicate treats are crispy and melt-in-your-mouth, with fresh nuts. They are very labor-intensive to make, with very few bakers having the traditional skills. I have never tried the cakes, but the baklava are extraordinary. However, the shop suffers from a common problem (experienced by other reviewers as well) in inter-ethnic food shopping: there are no signs on the items for sale. No names, so that those of us who did not grow up eating Armenian/Lebanese/Persian baked goods could learn to ask for our favorites. This might be tolerable, if the salesperson were communicative, if she were eager to answer questions and to educate the customer. That hasn't been my experience, unfortunately, even in a quiet shop with no other customers in line. Many customers want to know: what's the difference in flavor or ingredients between two items that look the same but are clearly in separate trays? how can we tell which pastries have almonds vs pistachios vs walnuts? what if we love (or avoid) rose water? but a salesperson who appears bored, impatient, or even annoyed with these questions seems to be sending a very sad message: this business only cares about shoppers who already know these things. "We aren't interested in cultivating new customers who did not grow up in our ethnic group/national locale." Is this the owners' intended message? I hope not. WOW! WOW! I will NOT go here again....... as long as I continue to be Mexican. This was my first and my LAST time coming to this den of hatred. I had a SERIOUS jonesing, craving, longing for, can't stand it ANOTHER MINUTE for ashta. My good friend recommended this place for having super fresh ashta. I was soooo excited for that heavenly cream. I was shocked and sadly disappointed at the treatment I received. The woman behind the counter acted as if she was annoyed by my questions. Every time she had to endure one more minute of my questions about the pastries, she rolled her eyes and gave me short, curt answers. Like a jackass, I was undaunted and persevered----- for my quest for ashta was a serious and laser focused quest. I needed to get my claws onto that cream of the gods. But rude attendant had serious powers because her distaste for a curious customer was so strong that by the time I got to the register I felt so disgusted by the treatment I received that my craving had almost disappeared. But, I had placed my order so I continued payment. She charged me and then proceeded to throw my change on the counter. I was fuming, left the change and walked out. Why I did not address this at that moment, I can't say, I was tired and not in the mood to get into a discussion with the management about the importance of non-racist customer service. I began to eat the ashta on the road. To my greater dismay, the ashta was stale and dry. The host behind the counter, in her rage against me, had neglected to add any syrup to the ashta. Although I don't think it would have helped the stale ashta they were selling. Yet, this seemed her greatest revenge. She hated serving me and wanted to give me a parting gift. Now, let's be clear: I love the Armenian people, the culture and especially the food. While this was an isolated incident of one Armenian person being rude to a non Armenian, I do feel it is a poor decision on the part of the owners to allow employees to treat ANY customer in such a manner. I definitely would not feel comfortable returning to this place NO MATTER how great my desire for Armenian pastries. This was my second visit to Glendale for sweets/baked goods. My first stop was at Porto's in downtown Glendale. This bakery (Sarkis Pastry) is located within a strip mall in a different part of Glendale. I had a little trouble finding Sarkis because there were two strips malls right next to each other with a lot of businesses and separate parking lots. This Middle Eastern bakery had a pretty large selection. There were four large glass display counters showcasing (1) individually sized cakes and mousses, (2) empanadas and doughnut-like offerings, (3) baklava and assorted miniature cookies by the pound (the kind you would find in a Pepperidge Farm box of entertaining cookies), and (4) assorted Middle Eastern pastries. Sarkis felt like a good place to pick up a bunch of assorted sweets for an office party. There also seemed to be a few customized cakes--probably for birthday parties and such. I thought the empanadas looked good so I went with that. There were two different fillings--cream and walnut. I went with the cream. The outside was crispy. There was also a sweet, sugary (but not sticky) glaze which made the pastry shell quite tasty. It was filled with a whipped cream that was similar with what you would get in a cream-filled doughnut. I liked the empanada; however, I would have liked it filled with apple puree or something like that. I also went with the rectangular sliver of black forest cake. This was not as good. The cake had a few layers of chocolate cake with a center filling of light whipped cream and pears and peaches. The cake was topped with the light whipped cream, chocolate shavings and a maraschino cherry. The cake was a little dry and tasteless. The whipped cream was okay, but I did not really get the inclusion of the pears and peaches. If I came back, I think I would opt for the baklava. While I'm not a huge fan of baklava, they seemed to have a pretty good assortment of flavors and fillings. They also had a lot of assorted miniature cookies. However, these seemed to be those dry shortbread-like cookies that you would see as dessert garnish at a reception or in a corporate gift tin of cookies. I did not do much research before going, but it felt like a family-owned bakery. I think I may have walked into a family discussion because the server seemed a tad distracted. She was having a conversation with someone else behind the counter, but that was fine. It added a little bit of character to the place. Prices were reasonable. Probably a decent place for locals or if you happen to be in the area, but I am not sure if it would be worth a special trip (maybe for the baklava if it is really good). I love this place! All of the recipes are authentic and delicious + the service is fast and friendly. *** A hot tip that all of you non-Lebanese Armenians may not know about... Go there on a week-end morning and ask for "Knafeh Jebni" It's a breaded and baked cheese sandwich, drizzled with rose water and pressed into a fresh baked sesame seed roll. It is sooooooooooooo good! My mouth waters as I write this! I like to take mine up the street to Forest Lawn and enjoy the sweet life among the resting souls of Glendale past. Morbid? Perhaps. I had a few things there and I didn't really enjoy any of them, they were all pretty bland or just unenjoyable for me. I'm Hungarian and grew up with my grandmother baking all sorts of fantastical pastries around the holidays. I majored in German at the University of Oregon and UCLA, looking forward to the Christmas markets of Europe to taste breads and sweets that are as hard to find as unicorns back home in America. If you're looking up an Armenian pastry shop, it's fair to assume you have already had some introduction along the way: a girlfriend or boyfriend, a beloved aunt, long-lost family holidays, trips out to the East Coast, memories of a childhood in Cleveland or Chicago. You're after something you haven't had in awhile. One of my favorite places in all of Los Angeles is Cantor's Deli on Fairfax, but it's not always possible to make it. And then there are times when I just want that experience of traveling back in time or across the Atlantic. Sarkis makes me feel someplace that requires a passport to visit. You inhale it when you first walk in the door. There are so many choices here, many of them involving powders, cremes and frostings, few of which you're likely to have seen before; or, ALL of which you've seen many times depending on your Armenian genealogy. If you're picky and don't like to try things that are new or different -- this won't be your place. If you harbor secret longings for Anthony Bourdain, kinky kisses, mystery gifts and tall,dark strangers, celebrate because you've just found nirvana. If there's a variation on baklava they don't have I would fall over backwards. So r-e-a-c-h into the cookie jar with the confidence you had as a kid. Who knows what mom put in there. It may be nutty, it may be fruity, it may have a creamy or solid center. But whatever it is, trust it will be good because it has been made with a lot of love. When's the last time you felt that reassured by what you ate? Thank God places like Sarkis still exist. Meh. I don't know so much about this place. I rarely ever rate a place this low, but I didn't even finish the things that I bought, I actually threw about 1/2 away. Baklava wasn't the best for me here. Way too sweet, but I tend to like the less sweet types of baklava. But these had a thick layer of sticky sugar at the bottom which was an overload. Also, a bunch of them had this rose-water flavor, which I just don't like in baklava - but that's just me. I did like the little crispy honey balls. It was the same really good baklava an Armenian man from work brought in during the holidays. I took a mental note and made sure to come back. Sure enough, I stopped off here before going to the Americana that weekend. The place wasn't busy and the girl helping us out was super friendly. She offered us free samples of practically everything we weren't familiar with, which was a lot. Highlights: Pretty much all the baklava was good, the diamond shaped one was still my fave, and definitely the cheese baked pastry. The friend and I walked out of there with two bags filled with goodies and it only cost $10. Say what?? The baklava was only $7-9 per lb. Such a steal!! This place came up on Yelp to try. The lady at bakery was nice and helpful. I ordered an assortment of baklavas based on her suggestions to bring back home and share with my family. Parking there appears limited and considering how popular this place is, coming here during peak hours might be a problem. Anytime im in glendale, I tend to stop in to get my favorite sweets and pastrys here. They make fresh treats to satisfy ones needs...much better than having a bar of chocolate, candy or cake. This is the go-to place for pastries if you're Middle-Eastern Armenian. Came here on a Sunday morning for the kunefeh b'jbneh, to take back home to the family. It was executed perfectly, as usual. But this review is really to highlight one of their underrated items - the spinach boreg. It might just be the only spinach boreg I will eat anywhere. If you're familiar with spinach boreg, you know it has a tendency to by slimy. My westernized palette is not a fan. But here it's cooked perfectly - lemony and a little spicy. If you're a foodie (and really who isn't these days) and you like baked bready foods, you have to try it. read more

This place is the sloppiest most unorganized bakery I've been to. They put pastry in a container in such a way that it looks as if I picked it up with my hand and threw it into the container. The pieces of pastry aren't even placed flat onto the bottom of the plate. It's placed on top of one another. However, I'll put that aside and rate this bakery--- minus that info. 5 stars for Cleanliness: the bakery was very clean, brightly lit, and had a great big selection of goodies (middle eastern sweets, baklava, cookies, cakes, mousse, etc.) 2 stars for Service: The lady behind the counter had a bit of an attitude. I understand that we walked in a few minutes before closing, BUT if she didn't want to serve us---she should have told us! As an entrepreneur myself, i KNOW that feeling of having to stay later for customers. It burns! BUT, question is....do you want the bu$ine$$?!?! IF I'm in the area, I MIGHT give Sarkis Bakery another try since there were so many interesting looking goodies. On second thought, I'm a stickler for good service. This place might be the granddaddy of Armenian/Lebanese pastries, but it is just ehhh if you ask me. Their baklava is definitely unique...and I am not particularly fond of the taste. Personally I have had better baklava from Costco and that is saying something. Heavy hints of cinnamon permeates through their pastries to an extent where I cannot eat more than a few pieces. Well I guess that's a good thing... The only thing that makes me want to return to this bakery is their fried dough balls..it's sad I do not remember the name of this yummy pastry. Do you remember the 80s song "Shoulda known better"? Well, that was the case for Sarkis bakery for one of their items ... their cookies. I was excited to see multiple 5 star reviews of this place, but when we came to visit, I was terribly underwhelmed by their cookies, for one reason: they were stale, and old. Now, where does the "shoulda know better" come in? Well, it comes in when I see the lady pulling the cookies, and the tops of the nazook are falling off. Note to self: nazook tops should not be falling off like that. So, boo on Sarkis for passing off cookies that were well past their prime. Now, to the praise that I do have for this place. Their boreg is pretty damn good. Actually, scratch that, it is the best boreg that I have ever had. Boreg for those unfamiliar with them, are pockets of dough filled with something ... in this case, they have spinach, and cheese. The filling of the spinach ones is pretty damn good. We couldn't pinpoint exactly what it was, but it had a really good flavor to it. So, the boreg saves this place. If the cookies are fresh, my bet is that they are pretty damn good. Ever since my dad came from Lebanon, 40 plus years ago, he has been going to Sarkis Pastry for a taste of home. He would always get knefeh for weekend breakfast. Last week he went and was very disappointed. First, he didn't get the right order in the bag. He ordered the cheese filled pastry and got the potato ones instead. Most importantly, the Znood el Sit was salty instead of sweet, the Baklava fingers were very dry and lastly, a woman came in and pushed my mom aside to pay eventhough my parents were first in line and the attendant allowed it!! Also, for a Lebanese place, someone should at least speak Arabic like they used to. My dad said he's never going back. I thought I'd try this first to give Sarkis a chance to correct this.
