Freshly made bento box for under $15, prepared right in front of you. The wait was about 15 minutes, and everything came out hot and fresh. Portions were satisfying, and I'd definitely eat here again. A nice touch was that condiments and extra napkins were provided without having to ask.

Not too sure why it's only coming in at 2.3 stars, as even though this is the first time I'm doing a review, I have eaten here at least 10 times before this. Went ahead and ordered the chicken teriyaki with extra chicken for a few more bucks. And while a few times in the past they seem to have been a little light handed with the chicken, this time it was all there. If you're really trying to do this a little more healthy, skip the rice and tell them all you want is the chicken teriyaki and the veggies. Most of the time the guys cooking are way way way too busy to even remotely chop it up, so you know going in this isn't going to be something where you're going to have any real quality human interaction. What's important here is to be absolutely clear with the guys ( amidst the natural chaos and Mall background noise to say nothing of babies crying, etc) to make sure your order comes out correct. A few times prior to this experience they gave me beef instead of chicken and vice versa. Suffice to say, I ate everything both times despite the fact that the order was off . Lol all in all this is a solid spot if you want something quick and fairly healthy within this food court.

Hey, it's fast food from a mall food court. It's the service terrible? Yes, do you feel kind of like an inconvenience to them? Yes. Is the food worth it? Also yes. It's 4 stars for what it is. It is fairly quick, the food is always hot and filling. I love the thick noodles covered in the teriyaki sauce. I would recommend adding at least half noodles. The potsticker filling was moist and well seasoned but the outer layer was soggy, I would pass on those. Overall, I think it's good for a food court.

I'm not sure why this place is always so busy. I live in the area and come to the mall a lot. Finally caved in and tried a bento box. That was my first mistake! They give you less meat than if you were to get plate! Doesn't matter though. The noodles were over done, the beef consistency made me nauseous, and the California roll was the saddest roll I've ever eaten in my life. There are so many other places there. Don't waste $20 on a bento! Have to note, the staff are great :) so this review is not on them!

Sarku Japan is one of my favorite places to eat at! The food is always fresh. I usually order the teriyaki bowl with no vegetables along with another teriyaki bowl with vegetables and noodles instead of rice. The staff is always so friendly and move very quick. Since it is located inside the Westfield Mall, it tends have a line forming, but it moves pretty quick. It is usually a 5-10 minute wait when it's packed and about a 5 minute wait when there's no line. It is located in the food court area of the mall. There are tables located right in front, so that one can sit and eat

Usually the plate is filled up and today the corner of it was missing

The service was bad. Hopefully next time they do better. The food was not good. The atmosphere wasn't that great

I really like the teriyaki chicken at all the Sarku Japan locations. I gave this place 3 stars because the customer service is very poor. The guy at the register is kind of rude to customers asking for simple things like extra soy sauce, hot sauce, etc. They have a policy for charging for these extras, which I have not see at the other Sarku Japan locations. But I saw first hand how rude he was to the customers. I didn't ask for extras so I didn't get this treatment. I still enjoyed my food.

Everything I thought before coming was flipped on its head immediately The quality of the food was excellent. I ordered the "crab cake" hand roll initially, just to have something to eat. It ended up being so good I got another AND a sushi roll. I was with someone who has pretty strong dietary restrictions and the menu as well as the staff were very diligent in explaining each dish as it came out which I really appreciated. The ambiance is really nice it's like being in a spa. Very cozy and while small, the noise level is minimal. Highly recommend and will be back. Again, excellent food and service

Let me start by saying I have loved Shojin for over 10 years and been many times to both this and…read morethe downtown location that closed down. Every time, the price deters me from going as frequently. So I was interested when I saw on their site that they changed things up because they know affordability is a concern and they wanted to rebrand as somewhere you could eat regularly instead of just a special occasion. We took our out of state friends who were visiting. For a party of 4 we spent over $400. I also really don't like that they made their rolls only 6 pieces now when they used to be 8 (so much easier to share with 4 people). The food quality is still really good but I don't understand what they mean about their prices having accomodated so people can have it as a regular meal instead of a fancy treat. At that price it still sits squarely in the "fancy treat" box for me. That said there is nothing wrong with being a "fancy treat" kind of place if the entire experience screams "luxury." This time we had the absolute worst service we have ever had. We were 15 min late due to traffic but called to inform them since they charge $25 pp for noshows. They didn't pick up the first time and I got a weird outgoing message and could not leave a message. When I tried again several minutes later, someone picked up and I got my message across. Considering we were late it was really surprising that we had to wait an additional 10 min or so to be seated. A frazzled looking woman just asked us to wait and and said someone else would be with us to seat us. She had us wait at a set table which was really confusing as it was unclear if that was going to be our table (set for 4) or we just were supposed to wait at table to be seated. Eventually we were taken to the other table but we did not even get water for probably 30 min and then only when we asked for some. They did not pour for us. With those prices I would expect prompt service, pulling out chairs, placing napkins in the lap, checking on how the food is and if we need any water, etc. The food took a really long time to come out. In fact we spent an additional 40 min or so after we had eaten waiting for them to make 3 takeout rolls because I think they only had one person in the kitchen. It felt like they had had several members of their staff fall ill in one day with how thin the staff was spread. Two women were running around managing the entire restaurant, trying to seat people, manage bills, orders, cleaning up plates, serving food, etc. When the spicy baked scallop roll arrived the server told us it had already been torched in the kitchen. We had raved to our friends about how they torch it at your table and it clearly is written on the menu when you order it "torched at your table." So, of course this was a huge disappointment. Luckily it is my favorite roll so we ordered a second one and I made sure to request it be torched at the table. But the fact I had to request it when it is expected based on their own menu is bizarre. Finally, we ordered the strawberry rose waffle to share for dessert. After about 10 min we saw what we ordered being served to a table further down and it looked great. When we asked about our dessert, only then did the lady tell us they were sold out out that dessert. What if we had not asked about the status of our order? Would we still be sitting there waiting today? Did she forget we had ordered it? At the end of the night when we were waiting for the to go rolls (with only 1 other party in the restaurant at that point) we received many apologies as it was obvious we were ready to go and just waiting for the food. However apologies only go so far when you have already received subpar service for steep prices. Customer service in this situation would have been apologies plus amends, maybe comping the rolls we ordered to go, or offering any kind of discount on the next visit. Anything at all to back up the apologies. This visit only reconfirmed that Shojin should be reserved for when we have extra time to kill and cash to blow and we will probably just get takeout at this rate if we do go back.

The Santa Monica one is more grab and go as it's their smaller flagship location. This business has been carried by the owner Keiko who has brought a slice of Japan outside of the designated communities of West LA's Sawtelle and DTLA's Japan Town! Here (at either location) you will find unique delicious flavors of omusubi but also called onigiri rice balls! That you won't find anywhere else! Rice balls are actually shaped into triangles and stuffed or mixed with simple ingredients like a salted plum called ume (it tastes salty, and tangy with a touch of sweetness) To more engaging offerings like the lucky cat with japanese pickles with fresh wasabi, ginger, and bonito(dried fish that is sliced paper thin) These finger foods can be enjoyed as a snack or grab a few to make a meal. The Culver City Location has a decor that immerses you in Japan. They have a small market section with alcohol such as saki, handmade dishware from Japan, cute claw machines for kids, and expanded meal offerings! Besides Keiko being absolutely amazing, the food is as well! From curry stuffed to fresh shisho leaves and pickled wasabi!!! There's lots to choose from and the best part.,,.they have always had an expansive vegan menu! Yes they are very Vegan Friendly! I love the Eggplant Chili Miso and Wasabi Tsukudani. I don't know what magical incantations and techniques are used on the miso eggplant, but people who actively don't like eggplant love this dish. It's caramelized deliciousness. The sauteed scallops with ponzu is an absolute must-order. The scallops are cooked (not overcooked, not undercooked) to a perfect texture that retains the natural sweetness of scallops, which contrasts beautifully with the savory-tangy-umami elixir created by ponzu and butter.
