This is the place to come for cozy, homestyle Japanese food in good portions, at a reasonable price. I had not been here in over 20 years and the food is as fresh and tasty as I remembered it. The polite, attentive service has also stayed true to tradition. The only thing that has changed is that it seems more popular and therefore more crowded and very noisy due to enthusiastic clients yelling to others in their groups. We'll happily go back, but not on a busy night.

Dined in on 2/11/25 to celebrate my actual birthday day and here's my review: We arrived around 7pm and no one was in line and no names were on the sign in sheet so we got excited as this place is known for waiting! But some people who came after us got seated before us. We understood that bc there were 5 of us, we had to wait for a table big enough to fit us. So ok. Then 2 tables side by side got open and a host comes to us and says there's a table for 4 that we can add a chair at the end but bc our plates are big, you won't be comfortable. So we were ok with adding a chair but she was hesitant. I asked if we could put the 2 tables together to fit us and at first she said no, I guess she wanted to fill up the 2 separate tables. She asked us to wait for a table to free up. The table she wanted us to wait for just started eating which means we would have to wait longer ugh. So frustrating when staff doesn't want to try their best to accommodate. Luckily, another staff and this particular staff started talking and she gave the other staff a suggestion to put the 2 tables together. What a great idea! Thank you to that nice and thoughtful staff we finally got seated. We ordered: - Fried calamari (very tiny portion) - Fried chicken appetizer that came after our dinner - combo with teriyaki chicken and tempura - 2 beef teriyaki plates - combo with tempura and sashimi - chicken cutlet curry - 2 orders of Shrimp tempura rolls We enjoyed our food but portions are small. Chicken was tender. Tempura was ok. Calamari was chewy. The restaurant is small, but thankful that they were able to accommodate us. We almost left! I really wanted to celebrate my birthday here, it started off shaky but it turned out ok. My husband wanted to tell the host it was my birthday but she was already not personable so it was ok. They are located on Centinela Blvd in Culver City and parking on the street is available. They do not take reservations so be prepared to wait.

Teriyaki Salmon Dinner Combination with Tempura

This gem has an unassuming restaurant front, but it's definitely a favorite for locals! There's a small parking lot in the back of the restaurant or street parking. Waited about 45 minutes for a party of 3 on a Saturday night. Their menu offers a good variety of Japanese meat and fish entrees, noodle soups, sushi combos, and appetizers. For appetizers, their Crab Gyoza is a must! I've never seen another restaurant that has it. Plus, they use real crab meat! So yummy! I usually like to get one of their dinner combinations. Almost all of them are served with miso soup, salad (they dressing is so tasty), and rice. The teriyaki salmon is always a solid choice. I also like that you have the option to get it with tempura or sashimi! The black cod misoyaki is also good, very tender. Sakura has a wide variety of sushi options. They give you a special order form that you can mark down the number of orders you want. The form itself doesn't give descriptions of the rolls, but you can ask for a menu that will tell you the ingredients in each roll. I got their Sakura Roll, which seems to be one of their most popular rolls. It has baby lobster, avocado, tuna, white fish, salmon, cucumber, and soy paper with slices of lemon. An order comes with six sizable pieces. Definitely enjoyed this one! And they have one of the best California Rolls--real crab meat in this one too! Worth it!

OMG, the sandwiches are on hit here. Can't believe I waited so long, after 40 years! This is my new stop for sandwiches and of course the HBH!!!!

Sweet Shrimps!!!! Sooo good, and you eat the head of the shrimp too, temporarily style. SIMPE is Japanese crispy rice out of this world.

Went on a weekday for lunch and there were a couple of parties already waiting outside the door before opening time. It's an unassuming, minimalist space but feels cozy inside. They had very reasonably-priced lunch sets that were surprisingly filling. Nigiri and rolls were fresh, with balanced flavors. The Uzumaki set would have been fine by itself but we ordered a couple of rolls on top and ended up a bit stuffed. The ume shiso cucumber roll was probably my least favorite item. The plum was a bit too prominent and there weren't enough savory flavors to balance out the tartness. Everything else exceeded expectations. Overall would highly recommend!

No debate, no hesitation. Just ramen. I had tried this spot at another location before and remembered liking it, so it felt like a safe, comforting choice for a long overdue catch-up. We got there at that in-between hour... not quite lunch, not quite dinner. The kind of time where the restaurant feels like it's just exhaling. It was completely empty except for us, which honestly made everything feel a little more intimate--like the space was ours for the afternoon. We sat down and immediately slipped into conversation, picking up right where we left off after graduation. Life updates, little wins, quiet struggles... the kind of conversation that only comes easy with people who've known you for years. And in between all that, our mouths were busy. The ramen came out hot, comforting, and exactly what we needed. Rich broth, satisfying noodles--one of those meals where you don't even realize how hungry you were until you take the first bite. We kept pausing mid-sentence just to take another bite, then laughing because we couldn't decide what deserved more attention: the food or the conversation. Service was really attentive without being intrusive. They somehow knew when to check in and when to let us just exist in our little bubble. The music was soft, not overpowering, so we never had to raise our voices or repeat ourselves--something I appreciate more and more these days. We stayed longer than we probably planned, but it didn't feel rushed at all. Just two old friends, warm bowls of ramen, and a space that let us slow down for a bit. Definitely one of those simple meals that turns into a really good memory.

Every time, the price deters me from going as frequently. So I was interested when I saw on their site that they changed things up because they know affordability is a concern and they wanted to rebrand as somewhere you could eat regularly instead of just a special occasion. We took our out of state friends who were visiting. For a party of 4 we spent over $400. I also really don't like that they made their rolls only 6 pieces now when they used to be 8 (so much easier to share with 4 people). The food quality is still really good but I don't understand what they mean about their prices having accomodated so people can have it as a regular meal instead of a fancy treat. At that price it still sits squarely in the "fancy treat" box for me. That said there is nothing wrong with being a "fancy treat" kind of place if the entire experience screams "luxury." This time we had the absolute worst service we have ever had. We were 15 min late due to traffic but called to inform them since they charge $25 pp for noshows. They didn't pick up the first time and I got a weird outgoing message and could not leave a message. When I tried again several minutes later, someone picked up and I got my message across. Considering we were late it was really surprising that we had to wait an additional 10 min or so to be seated. A frazzled looking woman just asked us to wait and and said someone else would be with us to seat us. She had us wait at a set table which was really confusing as it was unclear if that was going to be our table (set for 4) or we just were supposed to wait at table to be seated. Eventually we were taken to the other table but we did not even get water for probably 30 min and then only when we asked for some. They did not pour for us. With those prices I would expect prompt service, pulling out chairs, placing napkins in the lap, checking on how the food is and if we need any water, etc. The food took a really long time to come out. In fact we spent an additional 40 min or so after we had eaten waiting for them to make 3 takeout rolls because I think they only had one person in the kitchen. It felt like they had had several members of their staff fall ill in one day with how thin the staff was spread. Two women were running around managing the entire restaurant, trying to seat people, manage bills, orders, cleaning up plates, serving food, etc. When the spicy baked scallop roll arrived the server told us it had already been torched in the kitchen. We had raved to our friends about how they torch it at your table and it clearly is written on the menu when you order it "torched at your table." So, of course this was a huge disappointment. Luckily it is my favorite roll so we ordered a second one and I made sure to request it be torched at the table. But the fact I had to request it when it is expected based on their own menu is bizarre. Finally, we ordered the strawberry rose waffle to share for dessert. After about 10 min we saw what we ordered being served to a table further down and it looked great. When we asked about our dessert, only then did the lady tell us they were sold out out that dessert. What if we had not asked about the status of our order? Would we still be sitting there waiting today? Did she forget we had ordered it? At the end of the night when we were waiting for the to go rolls (with only 1 other party in the restaurant at that point) we received many apologies as it was obvious we were ready to go and just waiting for the food. However apologies only go so far when you have already received subpar service for steep prices. Customer service in this situation would have been apologies plus amends, maybe comping the rolls we ordered to go, or offering any kind of discount on the next visit. Anything at all to back up the apologies. This visit only reconfirmed that Shojin should be reserved for when we have extra time to kill and cash to blow and we will probably just get takeout at this rate if we do go back.
