The sushi was so fresh and the service is lovely. Would highly recommend getting the salmon sushi and hotate, especially with lemon. The slices and cuts of fish are huge and not fishy; it was a great deal. Especially the lunch deal for the bento boxes with adding sashimi for the extra $4. Sushi is good and it's a friendly nice and popular place. I'm giving it a "3" however because when I ordered take out, the menu on line said that Rainbow Roll was $18 and then when I went to pay for it, I was charged $27. I showed the people working there the menu and the response I got was, "oh, that's an old menu". One lady did apologize, but honestly they seemed to think nothing of it. I order take out frequently and I honestly can't remember the last time something like this happened. I think what annoyed me the most was their dismissive attitude about it. So, yes it's a great place and very nice setting but make sure you ask about the prices since this restaurant has clearly not made the proper updates on their take out menu. read more

I have mixed thoughts about this place. Some items on the menu were home runs while others ranged from okay to just plain inedible. Let's start with what I really enjoyed: the red snapper sushi (loved the garnish on it), blue fin tuna sushi, green mussels, and garlic butter edamame. Items I didn't enjoy that much or at all: regular tuna did not taste fresh, it was inedible, fatty tuna was okay, and the tempura combo was disappointing (the batter was way too thick for my taste. Great for lunch! Had their lunch shepcial chirashi bowl, with a side of Ikura and quail egg. The chef made a masago quail sushi by mostake. So they served it with my original order on the house, whoch I was totallly ok with. The fish on every dish was fresh, and the side salad was tangy and provided a good balance to the bowl. The space is small, and the parking is tighy, but the staff are very quick in getting everyone seated and served. So even if you are on a work lunch, you can get in, eat, and get out in time. Theres plenty of seating between the bar and the booths, I dont really remember music playong, but I do remember the water sounds from the fish tank. Highly recommend. read more

This is the place to come for cozy, homestyle Japanese food in good portions, at a reasonable price. I had not been here in over 20 years and the food is as fresh and tasty as I remembered it. The polite, attentive service has also stayed true to tradition. The only thing that has changed is that it seems more popular and therefore more crowded and very noisy due to enthusiastic clients yelling to others in their groups. After a long day my daughter found this place. Was pleasantly surprised as the food reminded me of my relatives Japanese restaurant in Stockton. My daughter ordered a Poke bowl, which seemed more like a Chirashi bowl in that the seafood wasn't heavily sauced, and it was great. I ordered the Salmon teriyaki and tempura combination. The impressive thing to me was the tempura was crispy and the tempura sauce was served hot. As close to my relatives Japanese restaurant in Stockton as I have found in SoCal. The fish was fresh and the service was great. They do have a sushi bar which was full when we walked in. *Sentimental for Sakura* Used to come here all the time because their sushi is good and the chefs are usually awesome & cool. The fish is usually cold & fresh and they serve you quick. The prices are reasonable and portions are large -- sometimes too large -- if there's such a thing. But some types and cuts of sushi can be too much depending on the fish. I call Sakura "Bonus Sushi" When I eat straight sushi I prefer to sit at the bar. At times, Sakura likes to stoke their customers with extra big cuts & chunks of sushi, thrown onto the sushi tray -- hence the name "Bonus Sushi." Haven't been back here in years...but Sakura is exactly how I remembered it ~~ was like stepping back in time. Same decor and same crowds waiting a long time to get stuffed. Come early or late or be prepared to wait. As for the sushi, it featured some of the biggest cuts I've ever had. Was nice for items like the albacore. I didn't like the size for the unagi, which were huge slabs. They seemed like two eel steaks on the plate. I like to save eel (prefer Anago) for last because of the sweet eel sauce. This restaurant has been here for a long time for good reason. It is a solid japanese restaurant with a lot of dishes one can not get elsewhere. Prompt service and an old school vibe. One can look around at the other patrons and know they have been coming here for years! I love a good kama and they have one here. There is street parking and limited parking in the back. Dined in on 2/11/25 to celebrate my actual birthday day and here's my review: We arrived around 7pm and no one was in line and no names were on the sign in sheet so we got excited as this place is known for waiting! But some people who came after us got seated before us. We understood that bc there were 5 of us, we had to wait for a table big enough to fit us. So ok. Then 2 tables side by side got open and a host comes to us and says there's a table for 4 that we can add a chair at the end but bc our plates are big, you won't be comfortable. So we were ok with adding a chair but she was hesitant. I asked if we could put the 2 tables together to fit us and at first she said no, I guess she wanted to fill up the 2 separate tables. She asked us to wait for a table to free up. The table she wanted us to wait for just started eating which means we would have to wait longer ugh. So frustrating when staff doesn't want to try their best to accommodate. Luckily, another staff and this particular staff started talking and she gave the other staff a suggestion to put the 2 tables together. What a great idea! Thank you to that nice and thoughtful staff we finally got seated. This gem has an unassuming restaurant front, but it's definitely a favorite for locals! There's a small parking lot in the back of the restaurant or street parking. Waited about 45 minutes for a party of 3 on a Saturday night. Their menu offers a good variety of Japanese meat and fish entrees, noodle soups, sushi combos, and appetizers. For appetizers, their Crab Gyoza is a must! I've never seen another restaurant that has it. Plus, they use real crab meat! So yummy! I usually like to get one of their dinner combinations. Almost all of them are served with miso soup, salad (they dressing is so tasty), and rice. The teriyaki salmon is always a solid choice. I also like that you have the option to get it with tempura or sashimi! The black cod misoyaki is also good, very tender. Sakura has a wide variety of sushi options. They give you a special order form that you can mark down the number of orders you want. The form itself doesn't give descriptions of the rolls, but you can ask for a menu that will tell you the ingredients in each roll. I got their Sakura Roll, which seems to be one of their most popular rolls. It has baby lobster, avocado, tuna, white fish, salmon, cucumber, and soy paper with slices of lemon. Came here on a Wednesday as soon as they opened. They were super crowded and had people waiting outside for a seat. Luckily part of our party was already seated. The place is not that big. I really liked Sakura. We had a variety of items since there were 8 of us. I had Ikura sushi, it was amazing and surpassed the Ikura test. We also had butter garlic edamame, shrimp dynamite, spicy tuna roll, red snapper sushi, and few hot foods from the kitchen for the kiddos. Only thing was the mochi comes as only 1 piece per order. We love coming here because while I am more of a traditional sushi goer, our daughter loves teriyaki chicken and the plate option comes with all kinds of combos to please everyone. We love getting the vegetable tempura, soup and salad, and beef or chicken teriyaki plate. While the wait can seem daunting and the service to get you seated could be more attentive, the actual service while at your seat is good. Good, fresh sushi in a busy, rather no-frills setting. This is another place I have been passing by for the two years I have lived in Del Rey and never been to. But there always seems to be a line of people waiting outside. Boyfriend and I happened in just before the rush on a Tuesday evening. We were seated immediately, which was great, because the place was pretty packed and rather noisy. The sweet waitress served us drinks right away. We ordered the 30 piece sushi combo and two orders of miso soup. The sushi wasn't the most artfully or beautifully presented that I've ever eaten in my life (see photos); however, the fish itself was fresh and generously portioned in thick slices. A very unassuming Japanese restaurant with good portions and reasonable prices. I love their set dinner menu with teriyaki chicken and sashimi. I think it's probably the best menu item price wise and portion wise. It comes with rice, miso soup, salad, and some picked veggies as well! When we lived nearby, we ate here frequently. A neighborhood gem, it is. Back for a visit after 5 years and the only noticeable change is the crowds. The food remains stellar. The same sushi chef is behind the bar, more gray and weathered. The crew is efficient and generous with sushi and sashimi creations. I always get uni if it looks fresh, and it was firmly and briney and yummy. Their hot dishes are also great. My wife had the sukiyaki with tofu. It's not on the menu, but they gladly make it. I had Yosenabi ; a hot soup with chicken, tofu, fish cake and shrimp with yam noodles and cabbage. It was served with rice and a tiny pickle salad. Shrimp and veg tempura is always a hit. We tried and LOVED the garlic edamame. The only snag in our total satisfaction was our server, who seemed confused and disorganized. Take out is a good way to go if you don't want to wait. They open at 5:30 and there is usually a line in front and back. Best parking is in the back. Enjoy! read more

I would describe our experience at Sakura as hit and miss, but mostly hit. The rainbow roll was one of the best we've ever had, with loads of real crab and a fresh assortment of fish on top. The rice was also perfect. The eel hand roll had way too much sauce which dripped out and overwhelmed the roll. The shrimp gyoza were very tasty. The ambience is nothing to write home about but was nice enough. Service was very quick. There is some parking in the back of the building in the alley. Otherwise there is plenty of street parking. TIP: I'm told that the bakery across the street called Angel Maid is excellent. They were closed when I was there but would make a good after dinner dessert stop. read more
