Sarsaparilla Saloon & Cafe (Belton, TX) - the Dagwood.
    John H.

Exploring the relatively quiet downtown of Belton, TX on this house hunting junket. Packing on miles and energy getting depleted, took time out to explore and energize for the afternoon after lunch. I was somewhat expecting a saloon. There is no saloon here. It may have been a saloon at one point; a saloon style bar anchored in part of this cafe. This was a weekday and might explain why all seemed so quiet. At entering, we were greeted and given a tour of "how to." Basically, order then sit. Food will be on it's way to you soon. The day's specials are on the far wall on a white board alongside the regular menu of sandwich and the like. Step over to the counter and order. Our lack of originality resulted in each of us (4) having the lunch meal that included sandwich and a drink. I discovered my son now drinks sweet tea; a convert. My Dagwood on white roll came with a half pickle spear. Nothing fancy here, served on a paper plate. Drinks in a disposable cup. Staff are cheerful and helpful. It was a basic lunch that hit the spot before moving on with our walk around the small square. Not very "interesting" inside, could use some inspiration or directed theme with decor and presentation. Better than a 3, almost a 4.

Super friendly staff, clean and welcoming establishment. Sandwiches are great and root beer flat is amazing. A satisfying experience!

This place is perfect for a nice, light lunch. The vegetable soup was delicious and the brownies was a great way to end lunch. The people there were friendly and helpful. All in all, a great place to eat lunch.

We had the privilege of being served by Becca. I don't know if I've ever met a happier person with such a beautiful personality. She made sure my buddies food was cooked properly because of a food allergy. She made a few wonderful suggestions to me and made sure I had all the sauces for my kabobs. She stopped by to make sure we were happy with everything a few times. She truly made the experience better a billion times over.

The reasons have kind of been piling up over the year, but enough is enough. - I don't understand why the charge for extra sauce is 75 cents to $1. The amount of sauce provided is just never enough - My signature dish here is the fish and chips. Today, they were completely over cooked - very dark on the outside. - The fries were not cooked long enough and I could be wrong, but it seems like the types of fries used here changes all the time - The entire staff (even the guy in the kitchen) are staring at their cell phones. I wanted to take a picture, but didn't want to violate privacy concerns - I miss the weekly specials - it's what drew me here in the beginning. - I've had several of the other dishes, but they just didn't "wow" me. The burger is way too messy, the wraps fall apart after a few bites, and the chicken shawarma requires sauce to have any kind of flavor. I'm sorry to have to stop coming - the owners used to be here all the time, but now it seems like it's just kids running the place. Time to find the next hole in the wall that I like to eat and work at. Respectfully, Marc

Big building with spacious dining areas, outdoor space, and the pickleball courts of course. There's also an upstairs area that's exclusively for members. The interior and exterior design is exceptional. Very clean and pleasing to the eye. Welcome to All - not just pickleballers! High end liquors with experienced mixologists. Great cocktail list. Wine list was pretty short but had some good bottles on it. Brunch food was good. The breakfast croissant sandwich was hard to handle and fell apart but tasty. The Southern Poutine was hearty and comforting (sausage in lieu of cheese curds) The bartender was exceptional-knowledgeable, engaging, and attentive. Would love to see a broader wine list with greater range. Was disappointed they didn't have the fireplaces on especially since it's been so cold. A nice fireplace would have really elevated the experience by adding a cozy atmosphere. Also, they have a fruit fly problem.

About server was nice and attentive even though we were the only ones outside at first. That said, overall we were nickel and dimed for everything. It really felt like they just want money. If a 14 year old wants to order off the kids menu, they charge an extra $4, but it's not an adult portion, it's the same amount of food they just want you to pay more. It makes me not want to bring kids here. Also, if you're eating and the pickle ball courts are empty, there is no discount for playing pickle ball, and they make sure to tell you that you will be charged while you eat your meal. The courts are empty and they don't have any reservations for them, but they need their money. We were told they would provide paddles and balls, so we didn't get ours from the car, and then we were charged for them. I love eating at great restaurants, but when a restaurant nickels and dimes you..it feels cheap.

Well first, the place is inviting for people of a certain age as well as for young people with many decorations evocative of the hippie era. It's clean and very pleasant. The menu is ambitious, I think they try too hard to be cute. And though the service was excellent, it all came down to the food for me. I ordered the Birdie Trio. It sounded interesting. But too many of these restaurants trying to do chicken and waffles take the shortcut and use processed boneless chicken parts reformed to look like an actual natural piece. I was supposed to get a thigh on each waffle. The chicken vaguely resembled thighs. But the meat was white and very salty. Not good. Should I ever drop in again, I'll stick with a more traditional combination and maybe my extra will be better. And oh, that credit card machine is set at a default of about 22% tip and that's on top of tax. Watch out!

You have the preference to pick lakeside, so we chose that and were seated outdoors with a view of Belton Lake. I also got their Sunrise Tequila cocktail (as they were out of the sunset margarita that I had initially wanted to try). I loved my shrimp and grits! The dish was super tasty, and the grits were cheesy and delicious. The fried catfish was also great, and the calamari appetizer was shared amongst the four of us. I do not think I liked the crab cake as much, but it was still pretty good. My personal preference at least. The bacon and sausage were poor quality, and the eggs were overcooked. The hashbrowns were only cooked on one side. The cinnamon rolls were the highlight--fresh, oversized, and enjoyed by everyone. The view is absolutely beautiful and was the best part of our visit. We may try again for lunch or dinner and hope for a better experience.
