Went in off season and about 1:30. No really busy but it was probably just timing. Place is usually busy most days. The chicken and waffles was ok but could have been improved with the addition of more seasoning on the chicken to balance out the maple syrup. Spouse had the American omelette and stated that he was underwhelmed. Said he tasted some cheese but not in every bite and it was fairly small in size. In short, not terrible but not superior either. This place has been on my radar for a few months now and finally got around to trying it out. I can't believe the critics on some of these reviews. Point blank this is a down south home cooking type of place, if you like that type of food then you will love this place. I enjoyed the country fried steak with mac and cheese & beans. You could have rolled me out after this heavy lunch, but it was spot on. Service was excellent and the iced tea was flowin... My co-pilot enjoyed her meal as well, the place was slammed and pumped out the food like a well oiled machine. If you are in the CB / Wilmington area looking for a nice breakfast place or hangover cure or just some down home cooking then you should give this place a shot. read more

Stopped in and picked up a ham, egg & cheese biscuit and a sausage link, egg & cheese biscuit to go, really a disappointment to tell the truth. The biscuits seem to be a commercially made heat-n-serve product from the freezer, definitely didn't taste like a scratch made biscuit, you can definitely tell when a biscuit is scratch made with real ingredients and when it's made of hydrogenated oils and other industrial ingredients, kinda like what you'd find at one of those places with a big breakfast buffet to feed the masses. The cheese they use isn't real either, some type of cheap processed cheese no doubt, tasted like a cross between a Kraft Single and that cheese you squirt out of a can. The egg was ok, hard to cut corners with an egg, the ham and sausage link were good too, kinda hard to mess up breakfast meats. The sausage link, egg & cheese biscuit has just one single link split long ways on it. For almost $10 buckaroos for the 2 biscuits, I expect some scratch made biscuits and real cheese and more than a single link. Other items here may be great, like pancakes or omelettes, stuff that they have to put a little effort into, but I left with a $10 sack full of disappointment. Never again. read more

Their food is good and everyone is nice but they alllllways get my order wrong. Out of the two times I've ordered, both times something has been wrong. The first time, I ended up with grits instead of potatoes and the next time I ended up not getting a biscuit. It's not the end of the world but it's annoying. Both times were takeout so if you get takeout, check your order first. If we had, it would have been easier to correct but since we didn't realize until we got home, it kind of sucked. Probably a different experience if you dine in though. read more

FRESH SEAFOOD ADVERTISED ON THE FRONT AWNING! What a scam. Frozen seafood out of a box is not fresh seafood. Beware of Thursday, which is Pasta day, with pasta dishes that have alfredo sauce, which used to be made in-house, but no more. It is made from powder packets from a grocery store. Owners are too cheap to fix the air conditioning in the back where the cooks are. Owners are too cheap to put a fan up on the doors to keep the flies out, so you have to try to eat, and swat at flies during the entire meal. Servers are great, which is the highlight of the restaurant, but there needs to be be new management, and someone overseeing the quality of the food being served, since a lot of the food is cold when it is served. Change the menu up on occasion, serve something different.....banana pudding and strawberry shortcake every single day.....it almost feels like no one cares anymore abuut the place any longer. The owners should make improvements, or shut the place down. read more

Went here with a party of six on our way to the beach. Walked in and followed the instructions to "seat yourself". We found a table in the back and sat down. The waitress took a little longer than expected to come over and take our drink orders. None of us had any coffee or food yet that morning. After taking our order it took FOREVER for her to come back with our coffee and waters (and by forever, I really mean probably 10-15 minutes). All of us ordered some egg meal variation, many of us ordered omelets (except one, who ordered from the lunch menu). I like that this place serves breakfast until 2 and lunch after 11. We had two people in our party who do not enjoy breakfast foods so arriving after 11 helped satisfy everyone in our party. After ordering, it took less time to get our meals than it took to get our initial drinks. The food was OK. My omelet was under-done (I ordered an egg white omelet and some of the egg was still runny). The hash browns were well-seasoned and tasty. The homemade biscuits were VERY GOOD. No one was blown away by their meal. I will consider giving this place another shot, but would have to think long and hard about it. read more

Staff (manager) was very rude when questioned about menu prices . We were over priced on every item we ordered with no logical explanation. Worst part was observing staff wearing masks inappropriately half way bellow their noses or not at all. Patrons were allowed in the restaurant without masks. I will not be retuning. read more

One of my favorite breakfast spots in town! That Philly Omelette is no joke worth every penny! You gotta get the potatoes as your side, if not you are making a poor decision haha. Prices are middle of the road but for a straight up southern breakfast I think they are spot on. If there was one more thing I would recommend it is get the toast over the biscuits! read more

Went last night with my daughter. I had the open faced meatloaf and my daughter had the grill cheese and bowl of soup. I was very pleased with our service. The food was great comfort food. Reasonable prices. We always like to go there for breakfast but this was our first time for dinner. We had a great time. Food was great !!! We will go back for sure !!! read more

We had to wait almost two hours for our take out order. I asked for my money back after standing in the restaurant over an hour and a half. The hostess refused and brought the food out 15 minutes later. After finally getting our food we noticed we were missing several dishes. This place is aggressively mediocre. Just "meh" all around. We had to wait about 30 minutes to be seated, but I understand that. Nothing the restaurant could do to help it if they had an unexpectedly high volume of customers. Plus, we had a large-ish party (9 people). And it was New Years Day. So, all good. I get it. But the real wait came AFTER we'd been seated. We ordered quickly, but then waited another 45-50 minutes for our food to arrive. We all ordered breakfast, so we're talking about frying some pancakes & bacon, not perfectly cooking a nice steak or something of that sort. It had been nearly an hour and a half since we'd arrived when we finally got our food. Ok. So the wait time was annoying. BUT, if the food had been excellent, all would quickly have been forgiven. Not so. The pancakes were very bland, lukewarm, & had a strange chewy texture. Their only saving grace was the chocolate chips we paid $1.50 to add, and even those only slightly masked the pancakes' mediocrity. I had to ask for butter for my pancakes, the syrup was cold, and honestly the whole experience was just very "meh." I give 2 stars for 2 reasons: First, our server was attentive & did a good job. Second, I enjoyed the side of breakfast potatoes I ordered. Other than that, this restaurant is a place to skip. Well first time here and was expecting good country food and service . Well let me start on the food took over 30 minutes to get food after several other customers that came 15 or so minutes after we had our orders taken and they got there food way before us Wow? And it seemed like the waitress could really care less. Even when we complained about how long it was taking to get food( mind you everyone that came way after us had their food and was about finished) she avoided us the rest of the time we were there. Went here for breakfast today was the first time I had breakfast here always satisfied with these people's food for years it has to be one of my favorite home cook Style restaurants around had a lot of dinners there being a single guy and all for many years now never had a problem with one meal ever I think one time they made a mistake on my order and the owner actually gave me my meal for free which I was shocked I guess cuz he noticed that I win there quite a bit of time so if anyone knows about this place I do I definitely recommend this place to anybody it's a nice relaxed atmosphere I've not tried the new Hampstead location yet but the Wilmington location never will let you down and I guarantee you the owner is really nice and so are all his employees I believe that he has very much pride for his work and his restaurant I have no doubt in my mind that the Hampstead location is not going to be a let down I'm actually excited to try it out but for the first time I actually had breakfast in the Wilmington location everything was smack on awesome I walked out of their full anyway I got to say the prices reasonable but they got real food sometimes almost better than home cooking this guy knows how to cook he takes part actually and everything he doesn't just do things from the sidelines like a lot of people do I recommend anyone to go check out this place it's on Carolina Beach Road at Monkey Junction go out there and try them out you will not be let down if you like a good home cooked meal everything fresh my favorite on the menu myself is the chicken fried steak all the foods real good though everything and I've tried but not let down by I actually enjoyed tipping all the time at this place cuz I believe in the restaurant business they count on tips but these guys actually deserve it I don't have a problem at all paying tips to these guys but I'm telling you the foods good the menus good the people are great you guys got to go I give this place a 5-star through and through all the way up and down and if something's not right the owner's right there to make it right I guarantee that he's a good man you guys need to check this place out unless you've been here already then you know what I'm talkin about if you haven't been here go there sit down pick something out because good menu check it out you going to love it read more

This place is pretty overrated. The food is bland at best. I attempted to order from here the other day on Uber eats because it had been awhile since I had last eaten here and the estimated wait time was one of the lowest on Uber eats. That did not turn out to be the case. Over an hour after submitting my order on Uber eats the restaurant STILL had not even begun making my order. This was not a scenario where it was the delivery service's fault because Sawmill had manually accepted my order. If you can't fulfill orders, don't accept them. read more

Horrible meal. I would have thought with the long yellow eye catching sign and the parking lot filled it would have been at least a two star home cooking restaurant. There were twice as many staff inside than customers so that explains the parking lot. Hamburger steak and gravy tasted sour. My wife couldn't even eat it. I had fish and chips because I was told it was the locals favorite and it was hard and over cooked on the outside and mushy and cold on the inside. Sweet tea was good but never again. I am a local and have eaten here several times over the years. The last couple of times it has not been that great. I have a hard time getting past the canned vegetables. How great would it be to offer some fresh local veggies? The hush puppies are usually ok, but were cold and tasted like old oil the last time. The rolls they stick with the hush puppies are just supermarket white rolls not even warmed. I normally get turkey and dressing, but even that was rather sub par. Now, I will say I have always enjoyed breakfast there, so I might just stick with that in the future. read more

The restaurant staff here is very personable. The greeter made small talk with my husband before seating us, and even called my husband by name when we left. Nice touch :-) My husband ordered the western omlette, which was the best omlette he ever had (his words). I had 2 eggs, over hard, with corned beef hash. Any cook that can make over hard eggs correctly gets love in my book! We also ordered 2 pancakes to share, and bacon. The pancakes were okay, but we've honestly had better. Reason why it gets 4 stars instead of 5, is because the sugar in the sugar container was packed in, and was hard to pour out, which means it hasn't been changed out in awhile. Don't waste your time.... My wife and I went there for dinner. We ordered and they missed a couple of things on our order but they corrected them once we brought them to their attention. The food was o.k at best. I am sure if you like greasy food, this is your place but not my favorite. We ate our food and got ready to leave and presented a gift card from the Sawmill Restaurant for payment. The waitress said that they did not take those gift cards because the machine was down. I asked to speak to the manager and she told me the same thing. She said that there was nothing they could do. I explained that they already had the money for the gift card and that I was simply redeeming it for the meal. The manager said that there was nothing that she could do. I told her that no where on the gift card did it say that it was only good if the Machine was working!! She never accepted the gift card. My family stopped at this restaurant on our way home after a much-needed vacation. While there is an IHOP across the street, we wanted something local and I'm glad we chose the Sawmill Restaurant. While the food is the country cooking made with love you would expect, the service is what makes the place! We had a large party and while we were waiting to be seated the hostess made sure we were ok, offered us water, and even offered to allow my grandmother and father who were both using canes to come sit in the air conditioning. My dad declined as he loved sitting in the rocking chair. My dad is also a diabetic and his blood sugar was quite low by the time we were seated, our waitress literally ran to get him some orange juice to help raise his blood sugar and took care of us like we were her own family. I live in Colorado and the food and impeccable service at Sawmill reminded me what I missed about home. read more

It was so horrible that my fiancee and I didn't even bother to take it back. We took a couple of bites, paid and left. People who give it good reviews obviously have been eating out of cans their entire life. Went here this past weekend with my family while we were in the area. Let's just say, I will not be back. First the girl at the front had an attitude. Not sure if it was because we were a big party with alot of kids or she just had a bad day. Second, the service was mediocre. Kept getting drinks wrong. Lastly, I ordered and hamburger with fries. The burger was burnt and the fries were so so. The ketchup was awful. Only thing good were the hush puppies they brought out for the table. If you enjoy cold food, horribly slow service and sticky tables and floors then the Sawmill is for you! After seating ourselves at a sticky table with sticky floors we placed our order of a French toast plate, an egg plate with corned beef hash and a chicken an waffle plate with a side of potatoes. We waited 30 minutes for our order to arrive. When it did everything was cold, soggy and unappealing. The eggs were cold and congealed, the French toast deflated and soggy, the waffle crispy on the top soggy on the bottom, and the potatoes were disgusting and barely cooked. This so called wilmington breakfast institution is nothing more than an absolute waste of time, money and flavor. When we left all three of us had upset stomachs. I find it hard to believe in a location like this that they even have a positive rating. I will never return to such a horrific "Resturaunt" again.
