But if you take the time to observe, it's t really looked like the people sitting outside were having a good time and enjoying the food. So we gave it a try and wow. I had a reservation for 630 Saturday eve, I arrived at 6 and said things have changed i would now like a table for 3 now if possible. The host/damager said well, that changes everything, we can seat you now but you have 90 minutes to eat, my friends hadn't arrived yet. He was simply rude!!! Seated waiting for friends who arrived at 620pm. Ordered drinks and crab cake. When these arrived we ordered our entrees. My chicken pamesan arrived, I could barely put a knife thru it, it was like cardboard. The waiter at this point had been very nice! Another served took it and resubmitted the order, my friends were eating their meals and had completed when I called the waited to check on mine. He returned saying there was a back up on the chicken orders, it was approx 715, I said cancel the order and requested the bill. Our original waiter, who had been nice, Johann L. Returned with the CC machine, I asked if the Chicken Parm had been taken off and he said yes. I handed him a $100 bill and he showed me the machine showing $130, I gave him an additional $100 bill and asked for the change and receipt. He returned with the change, no bill, I requested again and he said ok. He also then asked us to leave as our 90 minutes were up. I asked again for the receipt and we waited. Asked another server and he came back and said they were working on it. Eventually JL returns with the receipt, cash for what the over charge and what I felt was a scam as well as an attitude on his part and now trying to explain what happened. My friends are locals in Del Mar, I'm in OC. None of us will EVER return there and will spread the word amongst our many connections in the area. They should be ashamed!!! read more

Sbicca is an amazing restaurant! My friend and I were lucky to walk in on a Friday evening for dinner without making any reservations. We were seated right away and were given menus and water. For our meals, we ended up sharing: - Portabella Mushroom Ravioli: $34 - Grilled Double Cut Pork Chops: $46 Of the two dishes, the mushroom ravioli was my absolute favorite. It might be the best mushroom raviolis I've ever had so far. This dish was super flavorful, filling, and creamy. I loved the added walnuts, asparagus, and peas on top, which added a bit of texture to the dish. The pork chops were also delicious. We got 2 thick pieces of flavorful pork (that wasn't dry!!). The charred peach glaze paired so well with the pork chop and the sautéed green beans were cooked to perfection. I personally liked how they didn't over-salt the green beans. I wasn't a fan of the arugula on top as I could only taste lemon juice mixed in, but I still happily ate it. I paired my meal with the Samurai Ol' Fashioned ($19), which was pretty good. I'm not the biggest fan of Japanese whiskies, but this one wasn't too bad. For dessert we ordered the Fudge Brownie ($11). YOWZER. Heard a lot about this place - the Del Mar vibe is great and loved the bar, very cool and cozy. One large LED panel of you want to watch the game. Lots of horsemen and horseplayers here. So many have recommended this place I had to try it but ended up a bummer. I saw many dishes come out that looked great such as the Fish Tacos and Chicken Parmesan. I'm guessing just miss-ordered going with Local Blue Fin Tuna, checking in at $42 the highest priced entrée on the menu. Blackened (not seared almost like boiled), coconut rice (mush), sesame soy green beans (way soy), mango salsa (wanted more of this in the dish), and ponzu sauce (extremely tart, too much vinegar and soy which overpowered everything - almost inedible). Too much going on with this dish - the Tuna quality was good and cooked perfectly - rare to medium rare. The menu looks very interesting so I'd look elsewhere if you give them a shot. The starter was really no better - Kale Arugula Beet Salad was delicious except for the wilted stale greens. I'll definitely be back - chix parm looked fabulous. Excellent service at the bar. I came here for a work dinner with colleagues and I have to commend the superb service we received! Parking here is a nightmare, there are some public parking lots and street parking. For street parking, watch out for the signage if it's 20 min or 2 hr max, or if some meters go until 10pm. It won't be worth it to get a ticket for not paying attention. We had a large party and were seated on the front/side patio near the restrooms. It was chilly, but the heaters offered some comfort. There was a good selection of wines, beers, and cocktails on one side of the menu and the other side had the food. Many of the "shareable" dishes actually were not super shareable, for example the bacon wrapped shrimp only comes in 3-4 pieces and the calamari is not what you would traditionally think of in terms of deep fried rings/tentacles but rather in steak form and sliced up. So I would actually recommend looking down at the sides and selecting the five herb truffle fries and Brussels to share for a large party. For my "entree" I actually didn't want a large dish from their entree list, so I opted for a crab cake and the lobster and shrimp bisque. The bisque has a kick to it which was unexpected and it was pretty salty. The crab cake had a very crunchy shell and I did see some bits of crab meat within. Came here with my wife for some fresh food and drinks. We were really surprised to see how much space was available for seating! We were sat upstairs overlooking the ocean and near a very welcoming heater. We had some of the most fresh, delicious, and well recommended options and were totally in love. We were also incredibly impressed with the kids menu. No grilled cheese and chicken tenders only, but variety like grilled steak, chicken, veggies and more. Came back here after boycotting this place for extremely poor service and food. It's been several years since I've been here. Decided to come after work to watch the sunset from the patio. Beautiful location as always, they have a prime seating patio. Asked to be sat by the heater, knew it was going to get cold. But later after we were served dinner, asked to put it on and they said sorry, we don't have propane tanks. Problem #1. Really on a Friday night in the middle of Covid when most restaurants are savvy to the needs of their customers especially when we have many choices. Anyway.... we were served our dinner. I ordered the Beef Short rib. Although the meat was soft and juicy, the dish overall was the most BLAND meal in the world. No glaze no burgundy sauce no blue cheese crumbles. Just a minimal sprinkling of horseradish sauce. It's like they forgot everything on it!! We already were turned away from a heater very impolitely and didn't care to continue to talk to the staff. They are not friendly, accommodating, or happy to have customers it seems. We ordered the Surf and Turf Tacos. OMG talk about Franks Hot Sauce POURED all over it. Overwhelming and not at all normal. Look at the pics for both of the above for details. Overall this place reminds me always of poor service and poor food. What they have going for them is a great location. In the heart of Del Mar, it's located in a walker's paradise. We timed our dinner so that we could watch the sunset on the beach (many enjoyed the view from the second floor dining terrace). The service was prompt, and the waiter answered all our questions. We started with the Beet Salad. As you can see from the pic, there is a lot more than beets. While beets can be overpowering, they were mild and the size complimented the other greens quite well. The salad dressing was a mild Meyer lemon vinaigrette, but it did add to the salad. This was a very good salad. The Surf and Turf Tacos was quite a pleasant surprise. The combination of shrimp and chopped steak with their house hot sauce (similar to Louisiana hot sauce) was quite good. The heat of the house hot sauce was tempered by the appropriate amount of buttermilk dressing which was really freshened up with the salsa fresca. It's listed under Casual Classics but deserves to be list with the Chef's Creations. The Burgundy Braised Short Ribs was okay. It was a good cut of beef, but by itself was a bit bland. The side of demi glaze added a lot of flavor. The mashed potatoes were in a chunky style which complimented the ribs, but were a bit dry. The baby carrots had a mild sweet glaze with a nice touch of heat. The Broccolini was woody. We liked the Chocolate Chip Bread Pudding. Their dessert menu was standard fare except for the bread pudding. It was creamy, sweet and flavorful. There were ample chocolate chips in the bread pudding. The pudding sat in a puddle of fudge sauce and had a scoop of vanilla ice cream. What's not like here? A negative to the evening was that only 1 restroom was working on the night of our visit (and it was on the second floor). This meant there was a constant line for its use; so ask ahead or plan appropriately. This was an interesting place to have conversations with other patrons at a fine dining establishment. read more

We were seated inside which is easily the better option as it gets cold outside and a lesser quality experience. The staff were very friendly and knew the menu very well. This place has an awesome happy hour! I always get the salmon tacos, they are super tasty and the portion sizes are huge. It comes with a little side salad or fries as well. They have an our door, dog friendly patio but they don't offer happy hour in the ocean view area. The last time I was here, a fly landed in my halfway empty wine glass and the server came out with a new glass and gave me a bit extra. The food always comes out very quickly and the service is always phenomenal. I also just discovered that they have free parking in the back lot behind the restaurant. My hubby has the tuna and I had the swordfish. My first time trying swordfish and really wanted to try it. It was pretty good and the cook on the fish perfect. Swordfish in general is a very light tasting fish though. If you haven't tried it u must give it a go. I recommend. The tuna however was phenomenal! Second annual visit to Sbicca Del Mar. Once again they did not disappoint. We had our first stop for 2024 for dinner. Their Steak Salad actually had a very healthy amount of steak alongside the greens! So much so, we took a portion home and had it for breakfast the next day. My better half had a regular steak - cooked to perfection! 2024 Thanksgiving meal at Sbicca was a special treat. Their fixed menu was wide ranging in tastes, generous in offerings, and a very nice step up from 2023. Out of our party of 4 I had the salmon, one was served Sbicca's fried chicken (crunchy!), another had the filet, while the final order was a traditional turkey thanksgiving meal. The sides were outstanding and varied from different potato preparations, candied carrots and parsnips (wow), brussels sprouts (amazing!), and the list could go on and on from there. Brunch review for 1/25/20. Came with the fam to try this place out for brunch as I'd had this placed bookmarked for quite some time. Had the brunch menu and unfortunately it was just ok. I had the Del Mar Benedict with breakfast potatoes and fam had frittata and steak tacos. My Benedict came with chorizo that was vEry tough to cut thru and eat and my breakfast potatoes tasted old. The frittata was just ok also and the eggs a bit overdone and dry. I was also hoping for a nice view and they brought us to the top level for a view but all we saw was neighborhood and nothing that made the experience better for us. I saw some great pictures and reviews on yelp for dinner so maybe I'll give them another shot but not for brunch. I first went to Sbicca 20 years ago, and a couple more times over the years. Then I moved to Del Mar about 3 years ago and found out what a really, truly enjoyable restaurant and bar that is, so I'm there at least weekly. The food -- consistently excellent. Steaks have the perfect high-temperature-sear crust on them. The crab cake is not the regular hockey puck you find everywhere else: it's more like a crab muffin. The chicken buns: who would have thought that something as simple as soft tacos made by wrapping fried chicken, cilantro, and Sriracha in the loving embrace of a bao bun would be so addictingly delicious. The poke is excellent with big'ol hearty chunks of tuna. I enjoy everything there that doesn't have blue cheese in it. My only kitchen suggestion is to let the bluefin stand more on its own instead of drizzling it with ponzu; hopefully its predecessor, the seared bluefin, will return soon. The place -- there's usually a choice between indoors, outdoors, and open wall indoor available. It's in a prime spot that's perfect for sunset views. There's only one TV in the bar. And more about that bar -- this is the ideal bar setup. Not too loud, usually fun tunes instead of TV blaring, and a cool place to catch up with the neighborhood and meet the visitors. Like the horsies? You'll find jockeys and other horsemen here during the track meets, who will volunteer tips on how to make or lose a lot of money quickly. This bar's actually a place for intelligent conversation most of the time, and you're more likely to be discussing discoveries from UCSD than the status of Aaron Rodger's pinky toe. And drinks -- the wine list is excellent. Tues & Thurs are half-price night, when some high-end bottles end up priced lower than retail, and I hope nobody working there is reading this. Margaritas are a citrusy delight and stiff, and were a lifesaver during Pandemia, when Sbicca had a window to serve them to-go. The bartenders and staff are wonderful. And more about those employees -- they're kind, warm, and super-professional, whether dealing with me or an extreme drunk, which are never the same person, obviously. I couldn't believe how patient they were (at least on camera) when the Real Housewives From Somewhere shrieked their way through the restaurant a couple years ago. I've never seen staff look down on a customer or radiate a locals-only vibe. And, most importantly, they're very, very loving to my Wee Baby Ava, who often is found there, standing guard by me, in expectation of a free-range french fry, with her tail going non-stop. If I want to impress someone, I take them to Sbicca. I take my out-of-town visitors there and they're always impressed and still talk to me when they leave. I see my neighbors there and some of them still talk to me. Whatever Sbicca has been doing over the past 20 years is great. Keep it up! read more
