I go here sometimes waiting for the 157 bus to work. They have a legit espresso machine that makes a good cappuccino. They have amazing pistachio donuts. I haven't been too impressed with any of the other pastries or breads, but there are a bunch I haven't tried. Give it a shot as a coffee spot or to get a sweet fix. read more

We order a cannoli filling cake for birthdays and anniversaries. Super easy over email. Always phenomenal. We also had them do the wedding cake for my sister in law last year. Great prices, great cake! It was the least stressful part of the entire wedding. I'm also a huge fan of the pignoli cookies and buy a 1/4lb whenever I'm in the neighborhood. They also do homemade pizza dough by the pound, whole wheat or white and whatever you decide to put on top of it will become amazing. So I'm feeling what Scafuri is putting out there. It's an adorable bakery right on Taylor Street in the heart of Little Italy. Gimmie all the lemon knots. Gimmie all the lemon ricotta cake. (No, I'm not joking. This is a very real thing.) Gimme all the chocolate spice cookies. Hell, even gimmie all the pizza. What? At a bakery? You're lying, Angie M. Nope. I'm not lying. Giardiniera pizza is also a very real thing. One thing you don't have to gimmie again is the cardamon scone. It was completely overdone. Hard to tell when just looking at it in the case, too, because it's got a chocolate brown tint, but trust me... no go. Treats are a little pricey, too. I'm OK with it. read more

Scafuri Bakery made my dream wedding cake. I didn't want to go for the conventional white cake and instead, asked for a chocolate cake with chocolate frosting. I got to do taste tests that were all delicious and picked out a delicious chocolate ganache. Of course, my husband likes vanilla cake so we also had a vanilla sheet cake made to be served to our guests as well. On the day of the wedding Kelly, the owner, cut out a heart shaped piece of the white cake to put on the cake table. It was so thoughtful and so cute. They were both delicious and we got so many compliments on the cake. My husband and I were very happy to each get our favorite cake on our wedding night :) (And if you haven't tried their apple cider donuts you need to go try them). read more

My girlfriend and I live in the neighborhood and popped in one day a few months ago to see if this new/old bakery made wedding cakes. This was not the only tasting experience we had but it was by far the best on every level. Kelly Lynch, the young and enthusiastic owner of the place, guided us through the whole process, charged a very reasonable amount, and created a gorgeous and delicious wedding cake. Were I stranded on a desert island, and were only allowed to live on doughnuts for the rest of my life, Scafuri's doughnuts would be my choice (well, after I got over the weirdness of being on a doughnut specific desert island. Anyway: the doughnuts are rich and flavorful, the apple turnovers a breakfast on their own, the lemon ricotta a gift from a superior race of extraterrestrials trying to elevate our benighted existence.... the lattés are high quality, such that they needn't bother distracting the customer with foam-art (and so they don't try). Best of all, they people behind the counter are personable and happy to see you without is seeming forced - the decor is family rev-room: games in the corner, comfy couches, family pictures on the wall. Had a great experience on a Sunday morning at Scafuri Bakery. I heard about a Jazz Brunch that they do on occasion. While I think the term brunch is misleading in the way that Chicagoans typically think, it was really pleasant. The food was great, and that's most important. Ordered the special, the "Daily Toast" which was essentially an opened faced sandwich thought up with some creative thinking. Also had a giant slice of their pizza, and a large cup of coffee. All of it top notch. Service was great...even though it was busy, the staff was buzzing around trying to take care of everything. Finally, the mood was great. Something about being on Taylor street listening to the kind of jazz that put Chicago on the map. Music was provided by the 12th Street Ramblers, who had a big band feel even though they were tucked into a corner. The only issue we ran into was seating, in that there wasn't much...but you can't fault a place for being popular. Highly recommend it if you are in the area, or if you aren't in the area but are looking for something different to do on a Sunday. read more

My wife and I ordered our wedding cake here after a very tasty on-the-house cake tasting. We ordered a lemon cake with caramel sauce and it was the most delicious combination that we had never expected. I sent them photos of the design/aesthetic that our wedding was going to be (hues of blue + copper) and we briefly talked about what it could potentially look like. They delivered to our wedding venue and were super flexible in doing it on a timeline that worked for us. We were extremely satisfied with the taste, but not 100% a fan of the way the top tier of the cake was designed. I would definitely recommend them but maybe see if there was a way we could preview the design concept before it was officially made. Bonus: On your 1 year anniversary, you can call a week or so beforehand and have them replicate your wedding cake (I'm sure a smaller version), free of charge! Looking forward to that. read more

Their lemon pound cake is to die for!!! It's super moist, not too sweet, with a tangy bright lemon flavor. There's the essence of vanilla throughout as I can see the little black flecks throughout the cake! I always stop by to get a slice or even their whole loaf and it keeps well for a few days. I stopped in here on Saturday morning to pick out a hostess gift for an evening at a friend's house, and picked up a 1 lb. box of mixed Italian cookies. My generous hostess shared with us as I was hoping she might, and the cookies were all fresh and flavorful. My favorites included the lemon knots, the chocolate spice cookies, and the walnut cookies with the powdered sugar. My friend was in love with the chocolate toffee bars. The 1 lb. box of cookies was $15.95, and I also purchased a frozen pizza dough for $1.50 to use later at home. I've also had a delicious fresh-filled cannoli from Scafuri's during the Italian Festival on Taylor St. in summer 2014; the filling is the right amount of sweet and a great creamy consistency. Just went here today, I was passing by and had a sweet tooth and a craving for something new. I went in and was slightly overwhelmed, they have coffee, sandwiches, soups, sweets, and a lot more. I was debating between the ricotta pound cake and a pumpkin bar. The worker was extremely kind and helpful and showed excellent customer service. She helped me decide on the pumpkin bar (seasonal item. Ricotta pound cake is year round!) and it was absolutely delicious. You can tell it wasn't just pumpkin flavouring, but there was legit pumpkin in there. It was a hefty size too. I'm already deciding what to get next time. Definitely worth giving a try! read more

I have not had the best impression with the Chicago version of "Little Italy" up until now. This is by far the best Italian bakery in the city. Everything I had the chance to sample was better than the next - the cuccidati (fig cookies), sfogliatelle (sort of like a danish, pastry with cheese filling), cannoli (filled to order) and the lemon ricotta cake. I feel pretty justified in saying whatever you get is going to be a winner. read more

The daily toasts were delicious. We tried both the strawberry and Nutella toast and the ricotta, honey, and walnut toast. Both were excellent although, I wished there was slightly more honey to balance the ricotta flavor. We tried the sfogliatelle and it was similar to Artopolis' galaktoboureko but less sweet and palatable. The peanut butter latte had a very nice flavor to it. Wanted to make my 60th birthday party a little easier and ordered the vanilla cake with lemon curd filling and whipped cream frosting. The crumb texture of the cake was excellent in an authentic way (not the super fine texture of grocery store cakes where the flour is denatured beyond recognition), and the flavor was superb.
