Delicious pastries and friendly staff. I go once a week for a nice weekend treat. I love their almond and almond blueberry croissants. Love anything almond by them, such as the strudels. Anything made with their pastry dough gets me pumped up. If I'm saving my pastry for desert at home, I always sneak a smell in at least once during the day. Heavenly. I have a large Italian family, so for my wedding this past weekend, I decided to have assorted Italian cookies from Scafuri as my wedding favors. We worked with Kelly, who was incredibly helpful and responsive at every turn. We scheduled a cake and cookie tasting last year and, though we ultimately decided to go with another bakery for the cake, the cookies were delicious and planning was so easy. We ordered 17 POUNDS of cookies in 6 different flavors for pickup the day before the wedding. We bought little favor bags and Kelly was great at making sure to make the biscotti extra short so that they fit. She was crystal clear on pricing and, though we ended up bagging the cookies ourselves, Scafuri offered everything from bagging to delivery for a very reasonable cost! The day of pickup, I had my fiance call first thing in the morning to make sure the cookies were ready. The gentleman that he spoke with was very confused but eventually figured out our order and confirmed it was ready. Then, when my fiance arrived, a different(?) gentleman tried to ring him up for the cookies, though they were already paid for. Luckily, someone in the know stepped in and assured my fiance that he was good to go. The cookies were delicious and fresh! Our guests loved the edible favors and the variety offered was great! Working with Scafuri was so easy, and despite the little miscommunication with the staff on pickup, we had a totally smooth experience. read more

We drove an hour to have cake and coffee at Scafuri. After driving around for 1/2 hour for parking, we finally arrived and found they had no cake and no milk to have coffee. Very disappointing! I would call ahead to this bakery and make sure they have what you are coming there for. read more

When it comes to bakeries in Chicago, the competition is stiff but absolutely nothing comes close to Scafuri Bakery! Everything I've ordered from here has been absolutely delicious! Their Lemon Ricotta Pound Cake and their Zucchini Olive Oil Walnut Loaf are DELICIOUS and nothing like I've had before! I love how fresh everything is and the high quality ingredients they use. Also, if you're lazy and don't want to drive or walk over there, use their online store. You get what you order quickly and packaged perfectly right to your door. The owner, Kelly is wonderful! She's passionate about what she does, is knowledgeable and super helpful. Scafuri made our wedding cake in May and it was nothing short of perfect. My parents are very picky with their baked goods and think it's the best one they've ever tasted. I had an aMAZing cake from Scafuri for my birthday. It was three layers, gorgeous, vanilla cake with tangy cream cheese icing. Wowzers. I've continued to go to the bakery pretty regularly. My favorits are the apple turnover, cheese turnover, pignoli cookies (almond flavored with pine nuts on them), and now I'm addicted to their quiches and daily toasts as well. Anything with ricotta and fruit on it! Not to mention that the people are so dang nice that it's that much easier to spend your dollars there. Oh! And try those apple cider donuts while they have them. And the sandwich with the pesto and mozzarella. Mmmmmmm..... read more

This family bakery was just reopened a month ago by one of the descendants of the original bakers, and is still using some of the old Italian family recipes. We worked with Kelly from Scafuri Bakery for our wedding cake. Everything went great right from the beginning. We had a wonderful tasting where we tried out the different cake flavors and filling options. Kelly listened to our feedback and we developed a cake that had different combinations of flavors in the several layers of the cake. She also came up with a beautiful design for the cake that fit right in with the theme of our wedding. The gum paste flowers on the cake were a great touch! In addition to appearance the cake was delicious as well and we received tons of complements on it. My grandma loves Lemon Cake, which strangely enough is not easy to come by at the average bakery. I ordered a lemon cake from Scafuri with butter cream frosting and red raspberry filling. I have to say, it was DELICIOUS. I ordered just a 6" caking expecting it wouldn't be enough, I didn't realize it was a three layer cake and could have passed for a small wedding cake. Presentation, texture and flavor were all 100%. Will definitely be back. read more

We ordered three King cakes (king's cake?) for our SuperBowl party (and thank god no one could come because of the blizzard - we have left overs!). The bakery has three flavors, but we went with the original for all three. Wow - they were so good!!! We had high expectations since my husband is from right outside of New Orleans, and these were amazing. The price is right for the size of the cake (they feed about 8-10 people). Love this place! I'm over the fancy cupcakes and doughnut shops popping up everywhere. This place is a neighborhood classic. They have the best almond croissants in town and the lemon ricotta mini cakes are heaven. Both seriously deserve 5 stars. We ordered our wedding cake from Scafuri Bakery and it was absolutely gorgeous! We highly recommend them to other couples. When we went for our tasting where Kelly had made the custom British cake recipe from my childhood that I had requested. Kelly also understood the look of the cake we wanted and quickly found a photo that exactly brought together what I had been thinking about in vague terms in my mind. After our tasting we immediately cancelled our other cake tasting appointments. Kelly and her cohorts went well beyond "good customer service" when they helped me surprise my girlfriend for her birthday. Kelly created a special menu for us (including vegetarian dishes for me and meaty dishes for my gal) which wowed us at every turn. Kelly and staff created our wedding cake for us. The flavors - top layer of lemon cake with raspberry filling and bottom layer of lemon ricotta pound cake with cannoli filling - was really delicious. Kelly totally delivered on the design of two offset squares with smooth frosting and a cascade of multi-sized silver, white and navy blue beads cascading down the layers was exactly what I had envisioned. The only thing I would have done differently is to have ordered either another layer or larger cake because all our guests wanted to take home a couple pieces of the cake! We had a great experience working with Scafuri, and they made us a gorgeous, delicious wedding cake. Kelly was very helpful the whole way through, from our tasting to finalizing our order (after having to go up a couple of cake sizes as more guests RSVP'd yes than we had expected!). Our guests loved the cake, and we are looking forward to enjoying this same cake again for our first anniversary. (Scafuri includes a small complimentary cake one year later, so no need to freeze the top layer.) I am really confused by all the great reviews. The people working there are not personable at all. There were multiple uncomfortable interactions with customers while I was there. They don't play any music which makes it even more awkward when you're sipping your coffee just witnessing the terse interactions between employees. One woman asked them if they had a mold problem because of the smell of the place. Apparently they have a grease overflow issue in the basement right now. The smell made me nauseous. I ordered a chai (disappointing, but I've yet to find good chai in Chicago), a breakfast sandwich (low quality bacon, eggs, cheddar..just a mess), and a dense little pastry (was okay, but quite heavy). It came out to $17. I did ask for a small chai and he repeated it back correctly, then told the woman working that I wanted a large one. I reiterated that I wanted a small one, but he ignored me. I think maybe if you got pastries to go it *might* be a viable option, but I didn't find anything worthwhile about this place. read more
