Not being familiar with an an area when traveling I heavily rely on Yelp to seek out great eating establishments. Well the Scarlet Oak reviews did not disappoint and I will tell everyone the brunch menu selection was exceptional. Whether it was the poached eggs, scrambled eggs, tater tots or waffle, all was made to perfection. Pretty disappointed. My and my friend were excited to go to Scarlet Oak after finishing our 5k at The Yards Park. Scarlet Oak is one of the only brunch places nearby that opens at 10!! So that is a plus. We got there right at opening. First thing I noticed was that it took a pretty long time for the server to greet us. Then...probably the biggest reason for my 2-star review, they let us know that they ONLY HAD DECAF COFFEE. What in the...... For a place to serve brunch without coffee...I could've walked out right then. But alas, I ordered my bloody mary and started researching nearby Starbucks. Then, the food comes out...very quickly...TOO quickly. I ordered the fried chicken eggs benedict. Very mediocre. Poached eggs were a tad bit underdone. Some of my potatoes were underdone. We came here for brunch and I wasn't impressed. I ordered the chicken and waffles and expected nice fried crispy chicken. Instead I got a flat chicken patty that resembled schnitzel. Tried to go for brunch and they had a handwritten sign on the door that said the power was out and they were closed. Fine, totally understand these things happen - but we had a reservation and they never called or emailed to let us know. We had ubered there from Alexandria and there aren't many other restaurants in the area (or at least that would have space for a group of 4) so we were left out in the cold until we found a place about a 20-min walk away. Why is it that at some restaurants, the experiences are so uneven? My family and I have been to here several times before and the overall experience always seems to leave me wanting something else. The last time we came, my wife and I were early. From an attentive bartender, I ordered the Bacon Bloody Mary, one of the best versions I've ever had -- a robust concoction, full of flavor with a thick piece of Applewood bacon. MMMM! Get it again? Why not. This one came after a lengthy wait (more to come). It was watery tomato juice -- doubtful that there was any vodka, white stalk-end of the celery and no bacon. To boot, they had filled the drink to the brim so that, when passed to me, it spilled on two menus. C'mon! Here's another head-scratcher. Why such slow service? I get it ... it's brunch and time to relax. But, there was a morning Redskins game on TV. You'd think that they would anticipate more of a crowd. That said, after our waitress took drink orders and brought waters for some at our table, she disappeared (five minutes?). We eventually raided glasses from another set table and poured for those without. When she returned, she brought one coffee at a time and, much later, my drink. The food, once received, was delicious. The huevos rancheros combination of rice, black beans, salsa and fresh avocado was a hit. So was the spicy pork sausage pizza, chicken and waffles, and crab cakes benedict (raves!). Here's the math. 4+ stars for the food, 1 star for the undertrained waitress. Scarlet Oak is my favorite restaurant to visit in DC! I wish I lived closer because I would go way more often. The food menu has something for everyone and some items change seasonally so there is always something new to try. My favorite thing on the menu that I think is very unique is the Salmon Tempura. Its a nice appetizer that will hold you over while you talk to your friends and enjoy your first cocktail, but it won't spoil your dinner appetite. The staff always greets you with a smile and they are great at answering any questions and giving recommendations on food and drink options. Bonus: It's in a neighborhood with a lot of programming so there is always something to do before or after your meal. read more

The food was delicious but the service was crap! The hostess who had blonde hair, was rude the moment we walked in. She wanted to get an attitude about our reservation when there was clearly plenty of room in the restaurant. After we sat down it took a good 5 minutes for someone to greet us. As I said the food was delicious. We had to ask for our check after sitting there for 10 minutes upon finishing our food. When we left we were not thanked for coming or said goodbye to. Went here with some friends who have previously been, but I was not impressed at all. The service was very, very slow; our waitress took 25 minutes to get our drink orders, and it took nearly an hour to get any food on a not-so-busy Thursday evening. They seemed short staffed, she seemed to be covering quite a few tables. But she wasn't apologetic, either, nor was she very attentive. The food wasn't horrible, but it wasn't fantastic. My main entree of the salmon was good. Pork belly sliders were okay. Husband had the duck, which was slightly undercooked, but flavored were okay. My biggest issue? The establishment didn't have ANY diaper changing station, so I couldn't change either one of my son's diapers without having to walk several blocks down to my car. The hostess suggested I change him on a bench in the foyer; I think not. I doubt any sanitation committee would agree with that suggestion, either. Plus, I couldn't even move his stroller around inside because it was so cramped with the bulky chairs everywhere. Bottom line? I wouldn't ever return. Sub-par service. Meh food. Super cramped inside and lack of diaper changing facilities = one very unsatisfied customer. read more

So I decided to get a gilt city to here and try it out,hopeful for a find to go to before a Nats game. The food was fine but honestly didn't really stick out as being amazing. I ate it and felt full. We ordered the tacos and mussels for the beginning small plates. My wife got the salmon and I got the steak - it was a little underdone for medium rare but edible. My wife had the salmon which honestly looked like any salmon at other restaurants. I was hoping for a home run but settled for a ground rule double. I was reflecting on a couple things - and to be honest I'd probably make this 2.5 stars if I could. We were there on the early side and the service was mixed (we had barely looked at the menu and our server asked about our small plates... we asked her to come back but it was like 10 min later. I had the steak but had to ask for a steak knife. Instead of a second cocktail my wife wanted coffee...the coffee came after a long wait but the drink was on the bill ( not a huge deal) One note - some folks here got this deal through Gilt City. While in general Gilt has deals for better places I've noticed of late some of the same deals on gilt can be found on other sites like Groupon. One has to be much pickier when choosing the right deal. I really think the reviews here persuaded me to get the gilt city offer...as I said before not sure I'd come back with or without an offer Not sure if I would come back on my own without a deal. read more

My visit to Scarlet Oak was meh. We had a reservation for 1pm for a group of 5 on a Sunday. We arrived on time and they asked us to wait because our table wasn't ready which was fine. The wait started to become annoying though due to the fact that we had to wait 25 minutes before we were seated and the restaurant wasn't so crowded. Had this been the only thing, our experience still would have been good but our server was slow and inattentive and the food was just okay at best. I had the fried chicken Benedict which did not hit the spot. Having lived in Atlanta for many years, fried chicken Benedict is something that is found prevalently down south and is usually amazing. I probably had my expectations a little too high because Scarlet Oaks version was fine but the chicken was a soggy and not just due to the hollandaise sauce, it had that greasy soggy feel. Additionally the biscuit was not as thick as I would have preferred. The home fries were flavorful but they were cold by the time they made it to our table. My husband got the meatball pizza which was also just okay. I would give this place another shot for dinner as most of the high reviews are for dinner but I'll probably pass on brunch in the future. read more

The brunch left a lot to be desired. I ordered the Scarlet Omelette which, on the recipe was packed with vegetables and ham. I'm almost positive they cooked it in an omelette maker device because you could see the seams and the fillings had been mixed into the batter instead of inside the omelette. It was also smaller than expected and the fillings were scarce and mainly ham. The potatoes were under seasoned. While our server was nice, she seemed overwhelmed even at 10:30am before the rush and we sat with empty plates for 15 minutes without our check while she was busy with other tables. I went for a pal's birthday. We had a group of about 10. I guess when she tried to book it, they said there wasn't space and asked if we could sit at the long counter in the bar area. We did, and that was totally fine. The food was good. Everyone else ADORED the octopus appetizer, but I really thought it just tasted like chicken - I mean, good chicken I guess, but I wasn't blown away like everyone else. Apparently, it's like the best octopus in the world or something per everyone else's opinion. Anyway, I really liked my main course - scallops and grits - very, very good. The only annoying bit was the service - and that may be because they're new and are still working out kinks. There were a few people taking drink orders. One friend who ordered a mixed cocktail after me got her drink before I got my prosecco I ordered with someone else. Anyway, really good, ok service but that may be because they're new. Great hip spot in Navy Yard. I really like the ambiance. Very cool industrial modern decor indoors. The outdoor patio was spacious. I tried the Caesar salad and meatball pizza and both were tasty. The meatball pizza had just a bit of kick, which made it really flavorful. The wine and beer list had an ample and thoughtful selection. This place has the friendliest staff. They really make you feel welcome. Megan was the sweetest server. Very kid friendly too. I was there with my niece Amalia and they quickly brought her a high chair and really cute water cup. so glad to have this restaurant by Nats park! the place is beautiful and also casual and inviting. the menu is varied enough- perfect for a beer and burger or pizza at the bar, or a nice night out over a bottle of wine and entrees such as the salmon, which I had and absolutely loved! we also had the bruschetta and curry shrimp small plates- both delicious. bartenders were wonderful and the bourbon drink was the perfect cocktail for me. can't wait to come back and try more! read more

I had the slow cooked lamb on saffron risotto, which was reasonable priced, excellently tasty, and enough for two to share. As a Navy Yard resident we were thrilled to have a new addition to the neighborhood. We finally got to Scarlet Oak for dinner this weekend, easily got a reservation using OpenTable on a Saturday night and were sat right away when we arrived. The inside of the restaurant is well decorated and feels somewhat fancy. For drinks they have a good selection of beers on tap, wine by the glass and a full bar. Also a nice selection of wine by the bottle some of which are very reasonably priced. We started with an order of the hush puppies. They came out hot and crispy, but were extremely dense. They were also served with a sauce that seemed a bit off, and had a little metallic flavor. For our mains we ordered the short ribs and the chicken havarti sandwich. The short ribs were delicious. No need for a knife they were tender and had a great sauce with the mushroom ragu. The polenta they were served on though was the worst polenta we've ever had. It wasn't seasoned at all, even with salt, and just tasted like someone dumped corn meal in water and served it. Would definitely benefit from some seasoning. When we ordered the chicken sandwich the waitress informed us immediately they were out of havarti and would use provolone instead and wanted to insure that was ok. The sandwich was delicious, chicken was moist and the french fries were hot and crispy. I did ask for a side of mayo for my sandwich which they said they didn't have in the restaurant, but they did offer a lemon aioli which was good, very lemony, but if I'd ordered the burger I would have wanted mayo not the aioli. Overall we had a good experience and will definitely be back. Looking forward to when they start serving brunch. read more
