This is a tough call. Absolutely loved the inside - crisp, modern, and not that loud. The service was also wonderful and friendly. But, the wine was meh and their $5 personal pizzas were ...watery? I know, what did I expect for $5, but when I bit into it, the rest of the toppings slid off the crust and there was no taste, not the best. Would love to come here again as its within walking distance, but can't do it if the food isn't better. read more

This place is a cute hole in the wall located right by the Navy Yard metro. It has a homey feel with pictures of George Washington on the wall. I got the salmon with couscous, which tasted more like Mac and cheese and was full of LOTS of butter (wish it had less), but it was otherwise good. We visited the Scarlet Oak after the game Saturday night and was expecting great things... not so much. Service was abysmal, we waited 30 minutes for her to come over to take our drink order so we decided to put our app order in right away as well knowing we might not see her again for a while - as assumed, we didn't. The apps came out before we received our drinks and were bad, very bad. Mahi tacos were obviously frozen and tasted "fishy", Buffalo chicken sliders were so drenched in hot sauce they were inedible. We did eat the Mac n cheese which if we were at Popeyes it would be considered good. As you now by now, we were not at Popeyes yet wished we were after this experience. My specialty Dirty Martini came out warm and without the blue cheese stuffed olives. I asked our beloved waitress why it did not have them and she stated "We must be out of them I guess. Went here for brunch, and it was underwhelming at best, absolutely terrible at worst. The food wasn't spectacular by any means - crab cakes the same quality as you would find in the Costco frozen food section (actually the Costco ones are better), and tater tots that were reminiscent of McDonald's hashbrowns. The worst was the service. There were barely any tables full, and yet our server never checked on us. It took around 45 minutes to receive our food after we ordered (that's after waiting 30 minutes to place our order. We had to ask for water refills - and that was after multiple times having eye contact with our server who was putting dishes away at the bar and would completely ignore us. After we asked for boxes and checks, it took around 20 minutes to get the checks. Again, the server was putting dishes away at the bar - not something that was urgent given the fact there were no other tables and just a handful of people sitting at the bar. She was also rude for a server - not welcoming or accommodating at all. Just barely did her job, given the fact that we spent most of brunch waiting for her to take our orders and bring us our checks. After all that, she made out well in tips thanks to the 20% auto gratuity added to bigger parties. (Hot tip: Bring cash and pay the exact amount you owe for food. Disclaimer: I'm all about tipping - for regular service, I move the decimal point over, double it, and round up, adding a couple extra dollars around the holidays, even more for exceptionally good service. But the fact that our server was rude, completely inattentive even when we were the only customers in the restaurant, and ignored us most of the time, she absolutely didn't deserve that auto tip or extra. I hate when gratuity is automatically added and servers seem to use that as an excuse to not even try.) read more

We visited Scarlet oak on May 5th. My husband ordered the fried chicken with brussel sprouts and Mac and cheese and I ordered the ribeye (Pittsburgh style) with a potato cake. Both were horrendous. I am still stunned by how terrible the food was. The fried chicken tasted like old oil and greasy. The only redeeming was the brussel sprouts which were favorable and crispy. The Mac and cheese tasted like Kraft Mac and cheese. Mye tasted like his fried chicken. My plate had a pool of grease. Nothing tasted like it should. The potate cake tasted of fried chicken. I finally made it to Scarlet Oak for dinner and some drinks the other night. The atmosphere here is very nice and the service was fantastic. I had a side of meatballs which were pretty good but I found the price of $5 for 3 medium sized meatballs to be a little much. We went here after being down at the Wharf and not being able to find any place that wasn't packed. The brussel sprouts were definitely worth getting as an app. The pear salad was meh- very little pear and overly dressed, in my opinion. We also got a half and half pizza (pepperoni and pesto) but honestly I was so full from the brussel sprouts (a group of 5 of us split two orders) that I only tried the pepperoni. It was decent, hard to screw up pizza They made a very strong mojito, which for me made it a little hard to enjoy but I'm sure others would appreciate the generosity. A go to if you are in a Navy Yard. Great bar that is off the hill and not pretentious with better than average bar quality food. The tuna tartare and curry shrimp are great small plates. Add in the pizza which are always good and which is $5 at happy hour and you have a great meal. What sets this place off? The bartenders! Update 2/11/2016: after regular trip back here, I've come to appreciate having a great happy hour in the neighborhood. The tuna app is tasty even the Guac isn't super flavorful. The staff makes this place worth the trip. The bartenders are fast and aim to please. Made a Sunday reservation for day of brunch after reading on bitches who brunch that they gave it an A. We walked so parking wasn't a concern. Our server Ernesto was a chill guy but he hadn't tried any of the breakfast cocktails so he couldn't be much help. Our bloody Mary's were so bad we sent them back so he kindly replaced them with drinks of our choice for no extra charge. My friend got bellinis but they are not under the bottomless drink special ($15 for mimosas) which I thought was lame. The greyhound was up to standards and orange crush tasted like watered down orange soda with vodka. If you're going to make something a cocktail and charge $10, don't make it a simple fruit juice with vodka. The crab cake Benedict looked beautiful. The potatoes were soggy and under seasoned. The biscuit was plain. The egg was good and the sauce was good. It was non descript but overall disappointing. The waffles were good. The fruit was really good and the waffle was crispy. The veggie omelet was huge but a bit dry. Ernesto was patient with us. I also went during happy hour this week and thought Mike the bartender knew his stuff. We didn't get the Marghertia pizza because they were out of basil but the veggie pizza was ok. I would go back for happy hour. The service I received at this restaurant was horrible. The service was extremely slow, however you are timed on how long you can reserve your table. I asked the waitress for my bill, she took forever, and I had to walk up to her to request it again. The manager was extremely rude to a near by table of all African Americans, and hen I inquired his name and a hostess name who was equally as rude, they both r fused to give a name. I have been to Scarlet Oak for drinks on several occasions, but never tried the brunch. I went with two friends and after looking at the menu, we all had our eyes on the same dish - three fried chicken benedicts, please! The chicken had a great seasoning and was fried to perfection.. and being served on a biscuit only adds to the deliciousness! They offer a bottomless mimosa option for $16 so as long as you drink 3, you've made it worth your while. Easy to get a reservation and convenient if you're in Navy Yard! read more

I have been here twice. The first time I ordered the crab sandwich with brussel sprouts which was really good but the second time was not as good. I had the tuna tartare and the chips were stale. I had the chicken Havarti sandwich and it was good but I would say it was more of a burger than a sandwich. The service and ambiance are good. read more

This may be my first 5 star but it's well deserved! Parents came home from out of country trip and decided we needed dinner to reconnect and catch up. Saw a Capital Deal and decided this was a good place to try. Had a reservation on a midweek evening outside of baseball season (important to know because they are close to Nats Park) and seated right away. A little noisy but not obnoxious or packed. Menu is diverse and hits all kinds of budgets and diets. Shared a carafe of house red ($20) and it was satisfying and plentiful. We got wings and pork belly sliders for appetizers. Above average on both but favor the wings over the sliders. Entrees were half chicken, short ribs and ribeye. Everything was very well seasoned and plated. When asked, we mentioned sides were not as hot as protein. Not as a complaint, but more of an observation. Server took it to manager who stopped by for clarification and to make sure she let chef know. Couldn't ask for more attentive service than that. Seating is great, nice if you want bar/patio/quiet. Not much for children but good for TV and people watching. This place is really cute outside and inside - great ambiance and good music playing. I really really really wanted to like this place because it is really close to where I live. However, I went for brunch today and the food was not very good and the coffee was bad - nice presentation overall, but bland food, greasy but mushy potatoes and our pizza had grilled chicken that looked old and like they use that chicken for all types of different meals with really hard pizza crust (we ordered the chicken pesto pizza and the fried chicken eggs benedict) I think this place would be good for a happy hour or quick drink. Neighborhood gem that may become a city favorite for light dining. Found myself in SE DC on business travel, and walked the neighborhood to evaluate the local food/drink options. Popped into Scarlet Oak where the staff was kind enough to let me review the menu to help me decide. The menu was persuasive on its own--an attractive variety of small plates and light-to-medium-fare convinced me to give it a try; but the friendliness of the staff and the full complement of customers clearly enjoying the milieu and the meal sealed the deal, so a co-worker and I arrived a bit later (without reservations) for a mid-week dinner. We each tried a specialty cocktail, and we both were extremely pleased with the results. The "Redemption Rye Manhattan" and the Mescal-based "Smoke and Fire" both started the evening off on a pleasant note. My friend tried the Swordfish entrée, and found it well-prepared and very tasty, with enough accompanying vegetable sides to make this $22 plate a satisfying full dinner. I combined a Caesar Salad and a crabcake sandwich to create a $24 dinner that provided enough food to satiate an after-work hunger and enough flavor to suggest as-yet untapped potential in the kitchen. Some minor quibbles kept the review at 4 stars instead of something higher--both the fries and the crabcake could have been firmer and more caramelized, but both did hold the right flavor. More seating (cold weather eliminates the spacious outdoor seating) would provide a suitable venue for the wonderful staff to continue to charm customers; a deeper, wider, and more adventurous menu with options for heavier entrees would allow this un-crowded bistro to expand into a true foodie destination in an under-served section of the city. I eagerly anticipate future visits to monitor the progress, but from this one visit, great things seem in store for Scarlet Oak--and the neighbors lucky enough to dine there. read more

Made reservation for lunch/brunch for four on a Saturday at noon. Definitely didn't need reservations, but maybe the brunch crowd was sleeping in that day in preparation for St. Paddy's Day? Who knows. Nice place, plenty of street parking nearby. Drinks came out fairly quickly, but we waited for about an hour for our food; it looked like everyone else's food took about that long as well. It gave us a chance to catch up, though. We ordered the salmon eggs benedict (eggs were pretty vinegary, and biscuit was hard), a cobb salad (nothing exceptional, and no egg) and chicken and waffles (great fruit side, but the chicken looked like it came from a diner - pounded flat and a very thick, dark brown crust). Visited the Scarlet Oak last night. We ordered the pizza margharita, gnocchi, ahi tuna salad, Bibb salad and shrimp curry. The food was decent but lacking slightly in flavor. For example the Pizza was supposed to thin crust so I was expecting something light and a bit crunchy but the crust was bready.
