After hearing about this being one of the top sandwich, places in Waco, we decided to check it out. The service was super friendly and the food came out within five or six minutes. It's a cute old-school place with easy parking. The schmaltz sandwich was pretty good, although the bread is a bit oily not unlike Schlotzsky's. It's of higher quality than that, however. Schwartz was highly rated and recommended in social media. We stopped by to pick up lunch to go on our way back to our hotel. We ordered a pastrami with mozzarella sandwich and a roast beef with cheddar sandwich. We waited over 20 minutes for our order. The sandwich was made with an in house round loaf bread instead of the usual square bread or submarine roll. The taste and texture of the bread was fantastic. It kind of reminded us of a foccacia bread. The rest of the sandwiches were not impressive. The pastrami to bread ratio was way off. The pastrami itself was bland. I don't think it was cooked in-house. The roast beef to bread ratio was appropriate. The roast beef itself was ok, tasted like the type from the deli of a grocery store. Schmaltz's is like Steve Martin... ICONIC and birthed in Waco. If you grew up in or around Waco, you know this famous sandwich shop. However, if you didn't like me and have no one to tell you that it's worth a visit, then I will. The magic here is the bread! It's made by hand daily. The flavor is slightly malty, perfectly soft and pairs deliciously with any sandwich meat or no meat. My favorite is the Cheese Sandwich: Mozzarella, Cheddar, Parmesan, Lettuce, Tomatoes, Onion, Black Olives, Mustard (i omit) and Garlic Butter (another special twist they do for all their sandwiches). First time here. It was delicious! The garlic butter on the sandwich is soo good! It's on the inside of the bun between the melted cheese & it feels like the crispy, but soft bread melts in your mouth. The large is similar to a Schlotzsky's medium, size-wise. They don't have a Schlotzsky's-sized large. We got 2 blue plate specials (one small & one large) with Miss Vickie's Jalapeño chips & a sweet tea. Came to Schmaltz's because a Waco local highly recommended the place to me. Definitely gives me old-school deli vibes with a really nice community feel. It seemed like everyone from every walk of life was there to enjoy a sandwich. I got the Pastrami sandwich with Swiss cheese on their original artisan bun. The overall taste was really good, and the buns were by far the highlight of the sandwich. Maybe I'm just used to the Pastrami sandwiches on the East Coast, but I was a bit disappointed with the amount of Pastrami that was given. Of course, you can add extra meat for $1.70 but I doubt that even the "extra" matches what's considered "normal" on the East Coast. Definitely, a solid place to grab a quick bite. Placed an order for a lunch pickup. The place was full of customers enjoying their lunch, a great atmosphere overall. Service was excellent. The order had some custom orders and they did each one perfectly, marking the sandwiches clearly. That is not always the case with other places where you have to sort through sandwiches and look inside to figure them out. I kinda agree with Josh R's review - I don't understand the hype around this place but overall I thought it was "A-OK". Would I go back? Probably. It's a different alternative to the usual stuff. But 3-stars sums up my experience with Schmaltz's, although I must say if they just tweaked a couple of things they'd be an easy 4 star experience. So this place is kind of like the sister / brother to Schlotzky's Sandwiches. The pros here are the bread is homemade and it's crusty on the outside and soft on the inside. The drawbacks are it's a bit bland and lacks flavor. That's why they add the garlic butter on your sandwich - but you can barely taste that. I think that's an execution issue - they use a squeeze bottle to add it on, I think if they used a better quality garlic butter and spread it all over evenly then it would taste more flavorful. The other thing I noticed is every sandwich has an optional price for "extra meat". Well, if you want a really good sandwich here you have to get the extra meat - and that will put your price point at $10+. The meat here is sliced very thin, and there's not that much on a regular sandwich, so it's kinda lack-luster IMO. Another tweak is - if they could just add 2-3 more slices of meat to the regular sandwich then that would definitely put their sandwich over the top, and if it's not enough for you then just upgrade to extra meat. That would make a better sandwich, a better experience, and that would in-turn provoke me to come back more often. We're talking about them sacrificing 50 cents more that would likely garnish more return on investment, it would give their regular sandwiches a bigger wow-factor, but unfortunately they don't see it that way here. I think this place used to be really good, and their sandwiches used to be loaded with meat, but over time they've reduced their quantities - and that forces you to get extra meat if you want a good sandwich. And is it a great sandwich? Ehh, it's good. Is is better than the Schlotzky's Original? Ehhh, slightly, but it's not awesome or out of this world. The Tuna was okay, the Pastrami was good - not great but good. Most of the sandwiches we got were on the bland side of the flavor scale, I just think if they got a more robust garlic butter spread and laid it out better on the bread it would help out. But the theme here is you need to get the extra meat to get a better experience. Service was nice and prompt and courteous here. read more

This place is a carb loaded place with all the right reason to indulge. Loving this place would be a understatement, if this is called comfort food this is definitely my go to place. I have been coming to Schmaltz for 3 decades at least and I have never been treated so rudely, lied to and talked about behind the counter as today. I was ripped off at the register, asked for a large sandwich and a large drink and was charged such only to get the obviously smallest cup possible and then to receive a small sandwich!
