Schmidt's Pastry Cottage is amazing. While they are known for their amazing strudel and other wonderful baked goods, they also have a nice deli menu that I had the pleasure of enjoying today. I ordered their turkey pesto panini and was amazed at the wonderful complexity it yielded. The toasted whole wheat bread was perfect for the tender turkey, juicy lettuce, tomato, and red onion, topped off with an excellent pesto. The brownie was small, but so rich it was the perfect finish to lunch. Service is quick and very friendly. The dining room's ambience is simple but elegant. I would also highly recommend their strudel, Napoleon pastries, and eclairs. They are the best in the valley. read more

I've been here a few times, and who can resist? It's the cutest building on the outside. It's always been clean on the inside. The servers when I've been are kind of young and not super friendly or helpful with questions. I've tried lots of different treats here, and after each one I just say to my husband, "It's OK." I've had sugar cookies, butter cookies, macaroons, eclairs, and more. None of them has been bad by any means. But there's nothing I need to come back for either. I would like to come try their actual food--maybe breakfast or lunch would be worth a try. Worth a visit? Sure. Top choice for a bakery treat? Not for me. read more

I had high hopes when I walked into Schmidt's Pastry Cottage. You're greeted at the door by endless baked goods and delicious smells. But Schmidt's just didn't do it for me. My roommate and I decided to stop by on National Donut Day. The selection was decent, but not the most enticing display. We ended up picking more danishes than donuts. The prices weren't listed, but I think I know why... each fried friend will cost you roughly $2.50/each. And it could've been because we went closer to noon, but the donuts and danishes were very very stale. And the things we thought would have the most flavor, were bland and boring. Amazing bakery, patisserie,and cafe that will meet your needs for cakes, breads, cookies, and pastries and help you a bite to eat, too! I have been wanting to try Schmidt's for some years now. It's located in a charming European-style chateau overlooking the Jordan river in South Jordan. When you go in, the dessert display case gives you an idea of the delights that await you. But that's actually just part of what they serve! The seating eating areas are served cafeteria style. Order from the counter, they'll give you a number, you seat yourself and they'll bring your food to you. They don't have wait staff, but will bus your table when you're done. On my breakfast foray, the eggs and sausage were good. The potatoes were skin-on chunks that were crispy on the outside with light seasoning. The orange rolls, struedel (apfelstrudel: apple, weichselstrudel: cherry, and blaubeerstrudel: blueberry), and Danish pastries are simply amazing. I'm still looking forward to trying all of their offerings. After I finished eating, I spoke to a man who was cleaning tables and checking in with customers. It turns out, he was the owner, Steve! He spent a whole hour showing me the building, talking about his work, and telling me the history of the business, starting in the middle of the Marmalade neighborhood, branching out to multiple locations around Salt Lake Valley and finally ending up at this beautiful location! His father ran a large, local grocery store with a bakery and put him in charge of the bakery staffed by European immigrants after World War II where he learned his trade. Before purchasing the main location building in South Jordan 12 years ago, it had been a steak house. He changed it extensively to look like a historic European building in Germany. During the COVID-19 lockdowns, he stayed open and kept his employees busy. Keeping employees is a key hallmark of a quality food establishment, because it means consistent high-quality food. Steve's son is preparing to take over operations to keep the business in the family! During the lockdowns and supply-chain challenges, the business donated 150,000 loaves of bread to the community. At the time, people were struggling to get bread, flour, and yeast. So, he purchased extra flour and yeast from his suppliers when no one else had it, and started a drive-through line where people could pick up 25 pound bags. People would line up in their cars for the opportunity! In addition to their cafe, pastry, cookie, and cake counter they're a full service bakery! They have a separate design room where you can choose different cakes, icings, toppings, and stands for wedding or party cakes. I especially love the almond horns! Service varies - never bad but rarely great. I recently tried their lunch for the first time and will never get it again. I ordered 2 sandwiches - first, a gluten-free sandwich, but the GF bread is a super thin and dry piece of sadness, and they put the gluten-filled brownie right against the bread so we had to toss a contaminated piece. I also ordered a roasted red pepper chicken panini, which they verbally confirmed and displayed on the order screen - but the printed receipt wasn't itemized. Upon opening our order at home, saw we received some kind of cold roast beef sandwich (I don't eat beef). We called the store three times to try to get a refund - initially they said "oh you had the panini, right?" but then the story changed to we never ordered a panini and we were wrong. They were extremely reluctant to believe we received the wrong sandwich and that whole experience (literally) left a bad taste in my mouth. My husband's buys my birthday cake here every year and I continue to look forward to it. German chocolate cake that is divine. All the pastries as well. Their bismarks are the first thing I tried over 34 years ago and they drew us in as huge fans. Got one again yesterday and no one does them better. Schmidt's Pastries are like super comfort. It's not the finest pastry, but I will say, their cheap comfort pastries are the best. I got an apple fritter and a Bismarck today, and while these donuts are not the fanciest of things, they're some of the best donuts I've had in a long time. Their custard tends to be a little eggy for me, so I usually avoid any pastry with those. Their eclairs are honestly the standout though. Again, no bells, no frills, just simple kinda ugly pastry that just hits. The real hidden gem of this place though are their sandwiches. If you need a quick lunch, it is so good. I've stopped by here with a friend and we've gone to picnic afterwards, and it's perfect. This place is very no bells. It's not the cutest bakery, but again, comfort. They have a product called Holy Schmidt, and that describes my experience. I had high hopes for a good breakfast and maybe a pastry. When you come inside you don't get seated like a normal restaurant, you stand at a counter with registers spread across the room. It took a minute to figure out your order first then get a number and seat yourself. The pastries looked good, but we don't eat artificial coloring or flavors and it was clear by the glowing orange cookies that they weren't natural. I tried an old-fashioned donut and my wife got a pumpkin spice, pretty hard to mess up, well pretty hard was apparently the donut description as I literally showed my wife when she asked how the old-fashioned was by setting it on the table and knocking on it. They put the "Old" in old fashioned. OK would have ordered a latte but the gal at the counter said she didn't know how to use the machine so passed on that. We got the number and sat in the seating area which looks big in the photos but is really small, like 8 tables which were all full but two. After the table next to us kept coughing non-stop I thought I better go sit outside before he hacked up a lung. Walked across the store to the Starbucks for a coffee and figured the food would be there when I got back. There was already a table that complained about only having an hour to eat and they finally got their food. When I walked in I told my wife it seemed like a cafeteria at a retirement home, she asked if we wanted to stay I said yeah, it's hard to mess up hashbrowns... I was wrong. After going to find someone to get our food, the super nice gal delivering food apologized and said she had our food. I felt sorry for her, clearly, it isn't managed well and she has to profusely apologize when delivering the food. I ordered the biggest plate, the combo breakfast. What I got was about 7 tiny old potato wedges that looked and tasted like someone cut up a small potato and stuck it in a warming drawer for like 6 hours and then scraped the hard oily pieces onto a plate like it was food. The picture looks bigger than reality as it is a saucer not a full-sized plate. They also had a vinegar taste which I wondered if they meant it or should I not eat these. Tiny portion of eggs with a slice of cheese laid over it to cover the shameful excuse for eggs. My wife's omelet could fit in the palm of her small hands. I don't understand why people were coming there, have they never had breakfast before? The wait was long for old disgusting food with portions from what appeared to be the depression. read more

This place looks so interesting from the outside, it has super easy parking. As soon as I walked in I saw the beautiful pastry case. Even though I was there just for a sandwich I couldn't stop myself from getting a donut and a pumpkin chocolate chip cookie. Both of which were heavenly. My sandwich was also great and I love that it came with a brownie. The staff was very kind, and my food was ready quickly. I got the Turkey, bacon, and tomato on honey wheat. My grandma bought a cake for 35 dollars 1 week ago so it would be ready today for my dads birthday. My grandma came to pick up the cake and they had no record of the order. the cake she ordered wasn't prepared yet either. They wanted to charge her a additional 35 dollars to get a new cake. My grandma had to show them she did purchase it. So they called around and they found her a cake. They didn't make her pay the 35 dollars but when she opened the box for my dad so we could sing happy birthday. We saw a tiny cake that could not feed the number of people she needed it to. And the cake was 1/3 of the size she payed for. very disappointed with the service and how they handle a mess up on their end. I don't recommend buying a cake from here. read more

This place has the best comfort food and the best pastries in the land. I love their French Onion Soup and their Chicken Pot Pie melts in your mouth. It comes in a puffed pastry bowl that flakes away with every fork full. The sauce is light and fluffy. The perfect food for a cold Winters Day. Now about their amazing employees. I guess I was so excited to eat today that I left my phone wallet on the counter and walked out. It contained my phone plus everything else. After shaking the house apart I drove down there. They had it bagged up, locked and nothing was missing like too much cash that I shouldn't be carrying around. I thank them all for their extreme honesty. I was 100 percent sure that the phone and cash would be gone. I'll be back probably daily now but with a wallet and no phone. OK, this place is seriously hit and miss. The pastries are fairly good. If you can get them fresh in the morning, then they are great, sometimes when they are in the case for a while, they will taste a little dried out. My kids love their sugar, cookies. I really like their eclairs and I like that they come in two sizes. Sometimes you just don't want a massive eclair and it's good to have an option of a smaller one. The service is also hit and miss, sometimes they are on top of things and can get you in and out pretty quickly, other times you wait for forever! I have eaten here a couple of times for lunch and the food is decent. Nothing spectacular, but it's good for a different lunch experience if you weren't wanting fast food. I'll be honest, one of my favorite things here though, is their frosting cones. Lol! If you want, just a super small snack, they are actually fairly ingenious. They aren't super expensive and you get just the right amount of a treat without having to eat an entire pastry or cupcake! The ambience is nice here as well. I have to ration myself or I'll end up with a sizable dose of diabetes. But, man will it taste good in the making! Not only do they make lovely desserts and specialty cakes to order, but they also have a pretty good lunch menu. Come around noon on any given weekday and you're likely to find some of the locals getting together to enjoy a meal. They know where the good stuff is. I've had poor service in the past, which has made me seek sweet tooth satisfaction elsewhere, but I gave it a try again this past week and was impressed. There was still a line of folks ahead of me, but one of the girls behind the counter acknowledged me and was friendly as she helped people out. That goes a long way to heal past wounds. Ordering: If you haven't been there before, the ordering system for food (not the pastries and other yummy goodies in the display cases in the lobby) is a bit different than you may expect. The food/dining area is to the left of the display cases and cashier, where you find the menu for soups, sandwiches, and breakfast items. You order your food there, take an order number as well as any drinks or coffee you added to the meal, and take a seat in the dining area. We ordered the specialty French toast, the breakfast pocket, two coffees, and two donuts: a glazed twist and maple bar. I later went back and got a cream cheese danish, a raspberry danish, and a cream-filled donut to add to the review. We also told them how many creams and sweeteners we'd like when we got the coffee. * See below about why this mattered. * The breakfast with two coffee was about $24.00. The extra danishes and cream-filled donut added about $9.30 (these were paid for after the initial breakfast). These were specifically to add to the review otherwise we wouldn't have gotten this much. Environment/Ambiance: The dining area is basically a cottage setting, with wicker-style chairs, wood tables, (fake) flowery wreaths, and a tall, exposed beam ceiling. I felt like it was a bit gloomy and could have used some "happier" light to be cute and not just quaint. The tables were arranged not too close so there was comfortable space to chat over breakfast. There were chairs and also long benches along the walls to use with the tables. *The tables were set with only a napkin dispenser, salt, and pepper, so I quickly understood why we were asked about cream and sugar before we sat down. You need to know this before you sit down because if you need more of anything, you will need to go back to the front and ask.* The noise level was very low for a Saturday brunch (which I prefer). It seems that most folks grab their pastries and go rather than sit and eat in. Makes sense unless you want the pancakes or French toast. Food Quality and Taste: We were surprised that such delicious-looking food was very un-special. The maple bar and glazed twist were essentially the same as you'd get from a Winchell's donut shop (don't get me wrong, I love Winchell's). If they had been warm or a bit fresher, they may have been better but probably not by much. We were disappointed. And sad. The French toast was again so-so and nothing special. It had a good cinnamon flavor but apparently, there were apple chunks in it that I only discovered after I was told. Even these disappeared and added nothing but occasional crunch to the toast. The breakfast pocket (sandwich) consisted of bacon (or a different meat if you choose), egg (a scrambled egg patty), and melted cheddar cheese on a good-sized croissant- cut in half. Again, this was meh and nothing special. The best part by far was the croissant which was flaky, buttery, and a good size. I had no problem holding the pocket together as I ate and didn't lose anything to gravity. There was also a generous amount of cheese. I didn't notice any seasoning though, like salt and pepper. The coffees were decent; nothing special but nothing terrible. It will do its job but not add a spark to your day. The value of the food was a perfect 5. There was a lot of food (remember, not with the danishes and filled donut) for the cost. We were very impressed and pleased with the price overall. Extra pastries: The danishes are really generous. I cut mine into 4 pieces to share. The cheese danish was unfortunately bland (both the pastry and the cream cheese) except for the sugar icing. It was positively cloying (super-sweet). We just didn't like it. The taste of the raspberry danish (the center) was much better. The raspberry was sweet and tart, like fruit candy, but not overwhelming. The danish itself was bland yet cloying with the icing. Overall, we were pretty underwhelmed.
