Whew! Just when you thought you've seen it all. Enter: This Schnucks. I live a hop, skip and a jump from this establishment which always results in me needing to frequent the mayhem. This review is mostly for the patrons and atmosphere, as the Schnucks employees seem just fine. I will start with: prepare yourself for a long checkout process. 85% of the checkout transactions require 1) "add this, take off this, add this one, how much for this one..." etc, 2) at least 3 methods of payment, 3) two+ separate transactions per person, 4) a bounced check and 5) someone trying to sell me their food stamps with booze in their basket. Further, EVERY SINGLE TIME I go to a checkout line, there are frozen meals, cold meat packages, lettuce leaves, hot dogs, bacon, sour cream, milk stuffed into the gum/candy bins and/or left in a hand basket on the floor to rot. I'm not exaggerating. And every time I hand over the supposed-to-be-cold-but-no-longer items to the cashier, they roll their eyes. Then there was that sale on the Vess soda. I have never heard of or drank Vess before but it's a big hit here. Suddenly a huge crowd is growing, just in front of the cold meat section. An employee had just hung a sign and piled up a thousand boxes in all various colors (grape, orange, pink, blue raz, etc) and the people start crowding. I walked past to see if I was about to be entertained with (my second) Schnucks brawl, only to hear an employee saying "you can get 1 12-pack for $3 or 6 12-packs for $4!' (Something to that effect, literally). And oh my gawd, it was bananas. Mayhem. Let me wrap this up with the girl fight I saw at the edge of the produce section. I heard the commotion and it was literally right behind me. The crowd grew, fists were flying, hair was flying, items knocked over. It was an all out brawl. Luckily, an STL police officer is always very close by (just outside)! to lend a helping hand. They also have a security force and one of these dudes guaranteed has the legitimate hots for me. He greets me alright. Every. Time. Perhaps I shouldn't forget that time the bank inside was robbed in broad daylight. If you mention "ghetto Schnucks" to anyone in St. Louis, they know EXACTLY what you're talking about. There is zero confusion. I'm telling you, unless you frequent this place, you have no idea the comedy that ensues. If you get out without hearing gun shots or experiencing any of this, count yourself lucky! read more

I stopped by from out of town not knowing this is Ghetto Schnucks. I was initially clued in quickly to the potential for issues by the rather motley assortment of men loitering near the entrance and the lone security guard standing nearby, eyeing them. One of the men kept spitting into the bushes next to the front door. The store itself is dank and poorly lighted. It has some of the basics you'd want but nothing that looked particularly extravagant or difficult to find elsewhere. Its clientele as well as its work force are decidedly...urban. That really doesn't bother me but they seemed to bother each other, as there were a couple of verbal squabbles and a noted lack of enthusiasm when we asked a young man stocking the frozen section where the ice cream was (it seemed to be a chore to explain that it was in the next aisle over). Prices were fine, big alcohol selection, produce section looked like it barely had the basics. All in all I'd have driven further to go to a different location, had I known. 3 Stars, mostly for convenience. This is my last-resort-Schnucks. If I don't want to spend a bunch of money at Fields Foods, but don't have time to go to Trader Joe's, I come here. I mostly hit up when I need Shandy materials: Simply Strawberry Lemonade and a 30 pack of Miller Lite. Despite trying to be in and out, you cant avoid parking. The parking lot has to be the worst part. Getting cat-called doesn't typically happen to my queer self, but when I bring my wife here, (which I try not to) the patrons go wild. People's inability to keep their lewd comments to themselves is probably my least favorite part about coming here. This is ultimately not Schnuck's fault, and I am happy to have one so close, so beggars can't be choosers, I guess. Ultimately, love-hate this place. Love that I don't live in a food desert, but wish this establishment was a little more dignified. read more

All in all, Schnucks is a good grocery store, love it or hate it. They have everything I need and expect with bonus points for an excellent selection of things I don't need but want impulsively. Tiny saucepans? Tiki torches? Fancy Feast Appetizers? Check, check and check! They did recently downsize the cheese selection at the Gravois location in favor of increasing the hot food bar, but made up for it by introducing Perrier to their inventory. I'll take it. read more

This grocery store is a disaster. It isn't clean, the workers are surly, and the meat and produce are not good.

I am nauseous after my shopping experience just now. Almost no one is following any of the COVID-19 guidelines, including the employees. Multiple people from a household with no masks or gloves, very little social distancing other than the absurdly long line to check out (which probably means there were too many people inside the store in the first place), employees not wearing masks or wearing them incorrectly and zero sanitizing of the self checkout area were just a few of the violations I noticed. Even as I walked out, the singular security guard wasn't wearing PPE or maintaining a safe distance. Gross. read more

Your bagger put a container of olives and peppers (from the olive bar) upside down in my reusable grocery bag. It spilled all over the backseat of my car and left a smelly stain! 3. Okay, you may think to yourself how can a "Schnucks" have a 2 star average? Because that's what I did. Then I came here and my eyes were opened...this Schnucks is pretty bad. It's really cramped, dimly lit, and seems harder to find things than other locations. I came in here for a wine emergency and was able to find what I needed and get out. I really do not know how much I gotta say that I do not even want to give this arm pit of a grocery store any stars at all. Dirty, service is completely un-neighborly and the security there worries more about non-sense and not their duty to protect and serve. I was carrying my dog in a carry bag under arm to get a few things on way home and they decided that I was some kind of person they needed to kick out - been there multiple times w/o this treatment... I think you should avoid this place at all costs - they are VERY unfriendly here. ( and I cannot believe how bad they treated me... And I usually don't get such harsh customer service as I did here ) This is funny to some that don't understand what being treated kindly is. How have I never reviewed Shady Schnucks? When I first moved to Tower Grove five years ago, the only sound advice and honest thing that came from my roommate's mouth was telling me to avoid "Shady Schnucks," and somehow I didn't. A one time mistake. All in the name of - much like Aaron B -- a wine run... This Schnucks appears unclean, has awful lighting, more security than customers often, and I can say I have spotted people being arrested there. 2 stars = I've experienced better. I feel it might be a bit above 2 stars, but it does not deserve 3 stars. I've been to this locations many times due to convenience of its location, but many other Schnucks are far superior, although I've also had worse experiences at another location. I frequently find myself wishing they had more selection in multiple departments. The store has been rearranged/redeisnged a few times, and there have been improvements in some areas, but I still feel it's a "meh" experience, as often I feel there is a lot less variety and selection. They have made improvements to the liquor and beer selection (especially in the craft beer selection), although other locations still have a much greater selection. You will frequently get hustled to buy individuals' food stamps or panhandled in the parking lot, although security attempts to minimize this at least by the entrances. Is it worth driving much farther to shop at another Schnucks? Possibly, but I frequently do not wish to take the time to do this, so I'll likely keep returning. read more

This is the Schnucks I frequent. I shop here because it's close. Pros: If you want milk, you can rely on Schnucks to have it. Convenient location. It really is quite central to many neighborhoods in South City. Improved produce section. They just redid their produce section and I think the selection has increased. Hooray! Pharmacy. Sometimes I need drugs. I can get them here. Security. There are always security guards milling around outside, and while that might scare some people off, I haven't been bugged by a single person asking for change. I actually feel quite safe shopping here. Cons: Filthy/Messy. When I say "filthy," I don't mean there was a spill on aisle six that no one has gotten to yet. I mean movie theater style sticky floors that you have to peel your feet from. I mean unpacked boxes in the middle of the aisles on a regular basis that no one is tending to. Ridiculous employees. Once I was in the dairy section and saw that they were out of whipping cream. I asked an employee if they had any in the back cause I really needed some whipping cream for this delicious alfredo sauce. He looked at me like I had asked him to recite the first 26 digits of pi, said "hold on," walked away, and never came back. Crap selection. You go to any other Schnucks and you will find like ten times as much cheese. Why can't this Schnucks stock a decent selection of cheese? Cheese is glorious. Cost. Bell peppers, 2 for 4. I am not spending 2$ on a damn pepper. Soulard Market has way more reasonably priced produce. So as you can see, I don't really like this Schnuck's, but I'm too lazy and poor to drive out to Brentwood and spend all of my money at Whole Foods/Trader Joe's. I've been going to this Schnucks, rarely and reluctantly, for 2 years now...ever since I moved to the city. My first experiences there were NOT good but it's gotten a lot better and I'm a frequent customer now. They've hired some NICE cashiers who actually smile and even the security guards are pleasant. I've been able to find the vegan stuff I like to buy and I think the produce section is fine. I go there instead of the Arsenal location now...and that's saying something as I'm a HUGE fan of the Arsenal store. Honestly it does what its supposed to do. Its a grocery store. Nothing great about it. I was surprised that when I'm checking out right after church on a Sunday they only had two lanes open. If i really didn't need the food right then i wouldn't have waited. A lady ahead tried to go through the 20 items or less (because honestly it was shorter) and she made sure she told her that she was only twenty items or less. Ok, so this is an update to my previous review for THIS Schnucks. I went in to get 3 items, almost got runover by an employee who was apparently leaving for the evening, in such a rush it really didn't matter who, whom or what was in her way. After walking to the back of the store for 2 dairy products and a loaf of bread I enjoyed the next 12 minutes in the 20 items or less line while the checker bagged her friends groceries and enjoyed chatting about their personal lives, kids, and how to best ring up the entire cart full of groceries that the "customer/friend" had brought into the 20 item lane! I then decided that this was a social visit not a business transaction, I abandoned all hope and proceeded to an adjacent regular line. I enjoyed listening to the conversation between the flirting checker and every customer infront of me. I also was amazed that he sold 3 bags of frozen daquari premix the the 3 young ladies infront on me without checking their ID's! I guess he was already knowedgeable of their ages? So, 17 minutes and two lines later I left with my creamer, a new sence of social discussion and a vow to not return to this location. read more

They ended up handled by security. And the person right behind me is murmuring of something which I think he was either drunk or high...too much excitement in one night. I have upped a star for Schnucks as they are now carrying the Amy's brand of frozen foods. They sometimes even carry locally made products, such as the Angel Baked cookies. I would be nice if they carried locally made bread, such as Companion (like they do at some of their other locations) and had a bulk bin section.
