Have always loved this place, despite the hour 1/2 wait on weekends. However had a bad experience yesterday. Went with friends, 3 of the 4 of us had drinks. One mimosa and 2 bloody Mary's. My husband watched her mix them. She filled the glasses about 3/4 full of what I believe they say is ethyl alcohol? Or soju? Bloody Mary's had literally a splash of tomato juice. Mimosa had a splash of OJ and was very strong! All 3 are Of us that drank those were sick as dogs by 5 pm. Massive headaches and stomach 'issues ' and out of work today. I hope this review will encourage the owners to train their bartenders how to mix that crap as to not poison the customer. Last time I'll order anything but wine or beer, I assure you! I came here on a Saturday at 11am for brunch, and waited an hour with a party of 5. That seems pretty standard, so be prepared. While you are waiting to be seated you can order drinks from the bar station set up outside, or coffees from the coffee stand. The restaurant is nicely located in the Long Beach harbor. If you sit outside you will practically be right on the water. I didn't feel that the food was worth the wait. Although it was tasty, it didn't wow me and it is your typical diner food. The Food Network show Diners, Drive-ins, and Dives featured Schooner or Later in one of their episodes, and on the menu they indicate which items were the favorites. I tried The Mess, which seems like one of the best items on the menu. From the website: "This world famous, local tradition is a tasty blend of chopped ham, onion, and bell pepper grilled with hash browns and eggs. Topped with melted Cheddar cheese. Served with sourdough toast." I enjoyed it, but again I felt that none of the flavors stood out or were anything that I couldn't make at home. We usually hit this place on New Years day for some morning after champagne and breakfast. The weather was so nice we went there twice on this trip. Morning Champagne on the 31st and our usual visit on the first. Usually crowded on a nice weekend or holiday morning with a mixture of tourists, young partiers, and locals grabbing a bite. Food is decent to very good. Service is spotty, depending on how busy they are. We had a few minor complaints this time - like being charged for 2 $50 bottles of Champagne instead of the $10 splits. But in the end, it was two good mornings in a row in the sun with a couple glasses of bubbly. And if you can, grab the "Lifeguard Chairs" for you morning libation. Met a party of 16 here for a surprise birthday brunch. All arrived at about 9am on a Sunday morning. Person #1 did outstanding by placing us down on the wait list. Took about 30mins total to get everyone there and seated in the patio area. Not bad because I heard it could be up to a 2 hour wait! There's a coffee and snack area in the patio waiting area which is business smart because if you are waiting that long for a table, you can get something here to avoid going hypoglycemic. I ordered some hot tea and a blueberry muffin to tie off my hunger. The Mess is apparently really popular here. It's corned beef hash with eggs and cheese. Looks pretty messy! Bf ordered this with chili on top. I ordered the Belgium waffles with fresh berries (strawberries & blackberries) and whip cream on top. Both dishes were delicious and very easy to prepare... At home! But we choose not to and ate them here instead. Haha! I loved the view of the marina and was with good company. Because this place appeared on Diners Donuts and Douchebags or whatever that Food Network show is called, this place is usually PACKED, and you should expect a minimum hour wait on weekends. We gave up and went in on a Monday when it was 1/3 filled. Service was great. I got the bacon and cheese omelette and I liked how the bacon was in postage stamp sized pieces instead of bacon bits or full strips. It was First class. (ha get it?) Best of all was the sole ninja pigeon hanging out in the patio. My friend wanted to have a birthday brunch here Saturday around 12:30. This place was super packed. He had stopped by and put his name in on the list and they told him it was an hour wait. Onion rings: I like how they were extremely crispy, but they were pretty dry. I used plenty of ketchup and ranch in order to get it down. Open face chili burger: Hmm...when I think of chili, I think of all the great spices and flavors that come with it. Unfortunately their chili was pretty bland. When I say bland I mean really bland. Parking was a snap. The view is breathtaking. I love the seating area they have out front for the rush hours. We were seated right away but I still took a minute to sit in the lifeguard chair. Service was phenomenal. Our coffee was promptly refilled and we had multiple waitresses checking on us. My daughter created her own plate from sides and she loved all of it. She had 4 pieces of sourdough & pouted when I took one. One bite & I understood why, it's not your ordinary bread. It's fresh, thick & has the perfect punch of sour. I ordered a half a mess. Can't beat the location right on the Long Beach Marina. My daughters and I met there at 9am today (Saturday) and we had no problem getting seated right away. It's ridiculous most people don't even get to see the table they are waiting in line for as it only takes the server to be off by an hour (or two) for someone to leave. Most estimates are between 1-2hours to get seated. The estimates are never under the actual time. I think most people would like a time but there's no way to accurately predict the time. I've been to this place a few times now and it's usually okay, but on the 4th of July it was terrible. We went early to beat the crowd and there was no wait. Here are just a few examples: 1. We were seated, had our coffee and placed our order when our waitress had to make us move to another table to accommodate what seemed to be the family members of the owner. I was forced to sit at the end of the table with my legs squished up against the table legs. Super uncomfortable. 2. Ordered The Mess. Dry, cold and no flavor. Yuk! 3. My husband ordered a side of sausage. It was like the ones they put on an egg mcmuffin and there was only one patty. It was $6.50!!! What a rip off. 4. This was the worst part, a gal that looked like the manager was running around like her head was cut off. It was totally obvious she was completely flustered and was making a scene. The place has a cute name and is in a nice location but no nicer than many other places on the harbor. My Mess was fine but it's simply not an amazing dish. On the other hand, the wife's crab and cheese omelette was pretty terrific--it was stuffed with tons of fresh crab and had about half a sliced avocado on top. I certainly wouldn't wait over 30 minutes for a table here like some folks apparently do. You can thank the hyperactive Diners guy for the hype. Breakfast is definitely my jam, so this would not be a go to spot for me. They serve beer & wine, no hard liquor so their Bloody Marys are a bit different. No bottomless mimosas, no brunch just straight breakfast & lunch. On the plus side the service is really good, and everyone is super friendly. This is certainly always a bonus for me. The place does get busy, so either come early or be prepared to wait a solid 30 minutes or so. They do have a little cafe, so you can order drinks while you wait and the waiting area is pretty awesome. So you can take some time to breathe in the scenery. Would I come here again? I had a turkey sandwich sweet potato fries/ onion rings .. the sandwich was so dry no flavor and the cheese was thrown on there not toasted like the sandwich clearly says it is on the menu ! The waitress was nice she barely started it was her first day I tipped her good because she was very helpful wasn't her fault the food was not up to standards. I will never go again for the food..
