The first time Kim cut my shoulder-length hair, I showed her a picture of what I wanted. My cut wasn't evenly layered and one side was shorter than the other, plus it was much shorter than what I wanted. When I went back the second time (regrettable decision), I asked her not to cut it short but to just even up the layers. Even though she didn't cut the length off in the back, the rest of my hair was way too short for the "tail," still not evenly layered, and the right side was about 1" shorter than the left. On top of that, I waited about 20 min. past my appointment time. I'm not going back! read more

Don't let the name fool you, they are not afraid to also pull out the clippers here. I travel for work so I try barbers all over the place and I usually just end up missing my home barber shop more, but Kathy at the scissor shack changed that today. She did a great job of putting my high fade and pompadour back together after it was massacred by another "barber" in the same town a few weeks earlier. Thank you Kathy. All of the ladies are wonderful!!! Kathy colors and highlights my hair and Fong cuts it. They are all SO sweet and funny - a very comfortable place to go, not pretentious or stuck-up at all. After reading the reviews here, I went ahead and made an appointment so that I wouldn't have to wait. I went in, was seen right away- I LOVED the lady who cut my hair. i didn't catch her name, but she was so nice. Anyway, I got a lot of hair cut off- six inches, and I couldn't be happier. I woke up the next morning, took my hair down from the bun it was in, and it looked better than it had when she first cut it. I literally had to do nothing to my hair for it to look awesome. I will definitely be going back. Also, had my eyebrows waxed while I was there, and it was about a thousand times less painful than usual, as well. I've been coming here for about 6 months. I like the environment quiet with the occasional conversation in Vietnamese going on. I enjoy their honesty with customers when the customer wants a cut that doesn't make sense. They explain why they should do it. Overall I like it. I'll continue to get my haircut by them. I've only waited one time for a haircut and that was about 40 minutes. I'll just come back next time instead of waiting. Four stars cause of the prices being raised. Almost 20$ for a haircut. Went here because my boss gets her hair cut/colored here. Made an appointment and they got me in that day. Showed Kim a picture of exactly what I wanted and she went straight to work. I have got my hair dyed plenty of times and I was first worried when she wasn't putting bleach on my hair first. My hair was a dark brown at the time and I was wanting blonde highlights put in. She just put color on it thinking it would lighten it up enough but I knew it wouldn't. So I mentioned it to her but she insisted that she was doing the right thing so since she was the stylist I trusted her. When she got done it had NO color whatsoever to it. I told her right away that it was not what I wanted and showed her the picture of a second time. She then said it would look lighter out side so she took me outside with a mirror. I knew from looking at it inside that it wasn't what I wanted and told her I wanted her to redo my hair so I could get what I came for. She looked irritated and then started speaking to her coworker in a different language and rolled her eyes. So I just got up paid her and left. I paid $120 for hair I did not want and got very disrespected when I simply tried to get the service I asked for at the beginning. I would not recommend this place to anyone. read more

Worst haircut ever! This is a completely no frills salon. I hesitate to even call it a salon, there are no sinks, all cuts are done dry with no after cut styling. You leave looking ridiculous. I have been going to the Scissor Shack and Kim for over 12 years. I was going there when Kim was just working there...now she owns the place. Hurray for Kim! Anyhow, Kim and her team are top notch. I never let anyone else touch my hair. Her prices are very below average, and I agree with Michael C, she could raise her prices and I would still sing her praises. A friend of mine pays $50 to have his haircut at some fancy salon on Cannery Row. He gets pissed when people compliment me on my hair, and say nothing to him. They do everything...perms, color, waxing and great conversation. They also stay on top of the latest trends, and will do what you want, and give advise when called for. read more

I've been to the Scissor Shack 3 times and only once was I truly happy with the results. Each time I went for a cut and color. I have blonde highlights. The first time the lady did an ok job, but made a mistake on one section of my highlights. I'm not sure how she did it, but I ended up with a quarter sized spot of over-bleached hair near my scalp. It looked like I had a random dark blonde leopard spot on the top of my head. The lady was super sweet and everything else was decent, so I wasn't too upset over it. Mistakes happen, after all. My second experience at the Scissor Shack was after I had tried to do my own highlights at home with disastrous results. I'm talking bright orange streaks in my hair. The ladies at Scissor Shack did an excellent job of fixing my botched color, and I left extremely pleased. The third time, however, was the worst. They've hired a new girl who does not seem to have enough experience with hair. She is very sweet, but often seems like she doesn't know what she is doing. At one point she was trying to de-tangle my wet hair with a flat paddle brush. I had to tell her to use a wide toothed comb. To be honest, I don't think she's ready to be working in a salon. She needs more practice. I wanted to get my roots done, as per usual. I told them that I usually have highlights. They convinced me that I didn't need highlights this time, and that they only needed to apply bleach to my entire root area. For some reason I ignored my instincts and agreed, thinking "Hey, they're the professionals. They must know something I don't know." Big mistake. So the new girl applied the bleach and then told me to sit in the waiting area while she helped other customers. I must have been sitting off to the side for nearly 2 hours with bleach on my head, waiting. When she finally got back to me to wash and dry my hair, I noticed that my roots did not match the rest of my hair. The rest of my hair is a mix of dark and light blonde highlights. My root area was a weird bronze-y color. At that point I had been in the salon for about 3 hours, and I just wanted to leave. I let her finish cutting my hair, which was also a disappointing experience. I told her that I like my bangs to be at a length that allows me to style them either straight across or to the side. They were pretty overgrown at that point, and needed more than a trim. But instead of cutting them to a length that would work for the kind of versatile style that I requested, she barely took 1mm off the ends. I tried to explain what I wanted again, and asked her to take off more length. But she just did the same thing, barely taking any length off at all. As I said, my bangs were very overgrown and long at that point. The length was below my eyes. How can I wear my bangs straight across my forehead when they cover my eyes...? So basically my hair looked almost exactly the same as when I'd walked in, minus my roots which are now horribly mismatched compared to the length of my hair. Even my coworkers noticed. After that experience I have decided not to return to the Scissor Shack. The ladies who work there are all very nice, but 2 out of 3 experiences ending in disappointment is just not a good average. read more

I had been jumping around salons since my favorite gal went down south, and most places require appointment and $60+.... so? I turn to yelp for the answer, of course. Well scissor shack was about 6 blocks away from my house and was also highly recommended! I was pleased to find out walk ins are welcome considering that was on of the reasons my cut had been put off..(I work TOO much to think about my hair appt ahead of time!) Anyway, well I arrived and there were 3 people ahead of me, not to worry I only waited about 10 mins... cant complain about that! The gal who cut my hair was nice and did a good job listening to what I wanted. I was enticed when I saw $18 on other reviews but was curious if mine might be more because at most salons, since I have a really long and thick main, it is! I was happy to hear my cut was also $18 despite my long locks.... It cost me $30 because she worked hard and I believe in a good tip for good work. This place was great! I was looking for a cheap, quick cut and that's exactly what I got! I knew my budget was low and I couldn't expect a fabulous cut, but I was pleasantly surprised to walk out of there with great looking hair. I came in with clean, dry hair and no appointment. They were able to take me in almost immediately and I went for a 3" trim of the dead stuff with some light layering. For $18, I got just that. Great service, quality price. For those thin hair folk- ur hair is a nerve and goes into shock when it is cut, hence, making it look fuller. Therefore, for $14 go to Kelly and ask for a hair cut that doesn't look like a haircut. I visited Scissor Shack yesterday, my favorite seaside hair solon. They are a beauty salon for women but they also barber men. My wife went to them first for her hair coloring, and permament. Then my son went there for his haircut. My son liked the finishing blow dry Kelly did on his hair. Truthfully I would have never gone there unless my wife had told me about it because from the outside it looks like a regular women's beauty salon seaside place. Again they did a fantastic job on my hair, I had Kelly do a quick trim and she shaped my hair beautifully with nice hair styling, trimmed my eyebrows and I just felt terrific!! I make appointments for hair but I walk in for eyebrows and I rarely have to wait more than 5 minutes. I went there to have my hair colored and trimmed as a birthday present to myself... I had called ahead to make an appointment but was informed that they accept walk-ins and that I should just show up, even though I needed at least a two hour job. They basically REFUSED to do my color, stating there were "other people waiting, and it'd take too long." When I started to argue with them that I tried making an appointment and was told not too, they said I could come back the next day. In the end, I said eff it, give me a trim and curl it, I was going out that night and didn't have the time to find another salon. She did a very choppy job, and I was still charged $40 for it :/ was trying to save some money by going here instead of my normal salon in Carmel, but in the end I had to have my hair corrected because of how crappy she did on the cut. I will NEVER EVER go back here, and recommend you don't either. read more
