Just came in with my son. We live several hours from here. It was mid-afternoon and he ordered a fried chicken sandwich and some other items. I had already had lunch but was wanting to know what their chicken tastes like so I ordered from the "Add a piece" section on the menu board. (It's counter service at a chicken place) I was told they could not add a piece because they would have to fry the chicken and I could order a meal and add an additional piece that way. I explained I wasn't needing a meal that I was just interested in how their chicken was. "Ahh, you cannot do that. You can order meal then do that." My son had just ordered a meal...we were together on the same ticket...and he ordered a FRIED chicken sandwich...It's the craziest thing I've ever heard in a restaurant. This was a pretty easy place to find. For once, my GPS didn't let me down. We got there around 11:30 (ish) and the place was absolutely PACKED. So we were in town for the Avett Brother's New Year's Eve show and had designs on a couple different places to eat dinner before the show. Of course, we were not the only ones out for a bite on NYE and by the time we left our hotel, each of the places I'd bookmarked were packed so I did some more current location Yelp searching and turns out we were really near Scratch. The clock was a ticking so we took a chance despite there being only one car in the parking lot and were we ever glad we did. They have a number of sauces/rubs you can add as flavor to your chicken pieces or tenders along with two ways of frying (original which is just floured and fried and another version that is at minimum double-dipped to be extra crispy. I decided to go with the basic original, no flavorings and was really pleased with the results. Three pieces of well-seasoned, perfectly crispy hot out of the fryer chicken and some some quality coleslaw and crisp hot fries as sides. My wife got a chicken sandwich with some Asian flavors and I had a bite which was very tasty. My oldest cracked us up once his order came to the table. Six HUGE tenders. Those were good too and the leftovers were a nice after concert snack when we got back to the car. Nobody got sick so guess they were ok to eat after 4ish hours :) Thumbs up for Scratch! read more

Went to this restaurant with friends and the consensus was that it was a good place for some chicken. Honestly the chief knew was not the best part of the meal although it was good and plentiful. The stars of the meal, however, were the sides. Mac-n-cheese, green beans, okra, collards all were great! Fries were just fries... nothing special. Also really enjoyed the fried Mac n cheese bites the place was small inside. It was clean and enough seating for a small crowd. Certainly not a huge place. It is a counter service place but they did bring the food to you. The employees were nice and courteous. One of my saddest nights in recent memory was leaving the movie theater across the street, and getting excited about eating at Scratch for dinner only to realize it was Monday, and therefore, closed. I WAS CRUSHED. I had my heart set on the perfect crunchy crust of that buffalo chicken sandwich, the bitter, crumbly drizzle of the blue cheese dressing, the spicy burn of the Korean sauce that I sometimes dip on the side, and the glorious, glorious baked mac and cheese. No worries. I got over it. I went back the following night and had all the wonderful things. You should have those wonderful things, too. The chicken tenders are enormous! The service was great. I got the Nashville hot sauce on the 4 piece meal. Spice is very objective, however, it was in the medium-hot range for me and I eat spicy often. It was a little on the salty side for me. I've eaten a lot of the Nashville hot style chicken and this did have a good flavor. The dark meat was cooked perfectly, but the white meat was a little over cooked. Overall the meal was ok. I haven't tried the other sauces, but they might a little better. The food here is amazing and the service so so; it just depends who you deal with. See Storm a young cashier; she is sweet and fantastic disposition and truly a joy! There was another older lady who just seemed unapproachable and just not friendly at all. I heard she maybe the owner but not sure. I tried to ask her a question multiple times and just ignores me that's why I give it 4 stars. But I give it 5 stars with Storm providing service. The place is very small so no lots of elbow room, but it is quaint and clean. The food is definitely worth the trip and Storm is definitely amazing! Will look to return next time I'm in the area. We had high hopes for some great chicken and waffles. Honestly, we were disappointed. Chicken was tough. The bigger issue was that my spouse bit into a piece of hard shiny, black plastic in his waffle. We realize things can happen, so we did let them know. The waiter was incredibly polite, told the kitchen and let us know the kitchen said it was not plastic, simply a piece of burnt waffle edge. We thanked him and paid the bill. For reference, the plastic was in the center of the waffle, not near the edge. It was not food product. As we were getting up to leave someone came out from the kitchen to stop us and tell us how we were wrong and condescendingly explained again just how wrong we were and that it was simply burnt piece of waffle, not plastic. We said "ok, thank you" We were not eager to be schooled on how wrong we were. I grew up in family restaurant and knew it was not burnt waffle. No point in arguing. The way it was handled was unprofessional and unpleasant. Who chases down the customer and chastises them for making them aware of an issue with their food? The food was not great. An apology would be the correct response and was already provided by the waiter, and accepted by us. It not what we had in mind for our spur of the moment date lunch. While the chicken was crispy and delicious, I do think it's a bit overpriced. Meal for 3 people was a lot, especially for just chicken and waffles plus drinks. The chicken has various seasons you can ask for. We decided to go without the seasoning but added sriracha honey dipping sauce. Yesterday I ordered takeout -- their enormous chicken tenders, a side of green beans (I've loved these since my 1st visit), and a side of collard greens. You probably already know that their chicken is fantastic -- fresh and cooked to order, so make sure you order ahead by about 15-20 minutes. I was blown away by how delicious the collard greens were. I sopped them up the only way I know how, with a pinch of cornbread (made at home) between my fingers, picking up a bite full of collards at a time so that the "liquor" from the greens soaked into the piece of cornbread just prior to me eating it. Wow, I'm so relieved that I no longer have to make this labor-intensive dish at home. They had no stems! I can't tell you how happy this made me. And they were super tender and tasty. They cook them with bacon grease but they aren't greasy at all. I'm going back for some more tomorrow -- JUST for the collard greens. :O) read more

I finally got around to trying the chicken at this small, relatively new restaurant. I tried some fried wings, some fried dark meat, a chicken sandwich, 1/2 Rotisserie Chicken, and several sides. The Fried Wings (6 pieces for $8 is more than a little pricey, and these are not whole wings) are excellent in flavor and freshness. You have a choice of 8 sauces, and I went with the Buffalo style hot sauce - very good. The 2 piece Dark Meat ($7.50 for a thigh and a drumstick with a small side) was also nice, and I chose the Nashville Hot Sauce, and it is indeed hot - best version of this Nashville dish I've had outside of Tennessee! And yet, this is another pricey item! The Chicken Sandwich ($6, no side), referred to as "Classic", was just that - excellent fried chicken, mayo, lettuce, and tomato. The Rotisserie Chicken (1/2 for $10) was simply ok, a bit overdone and a tad dry. The sides - Slaw, Mashed Potatoes, and Mac & Cheese were, at best, ordinary. End of the day - mixed bag. Wings were great, dark meat chicken nice, sandwich was awesome - other items were bit of a miss. Value is an issue here. Probably will not be a regular! read more

The only reason this isn't a one is because of the chicken. We did a 8 piece chicken take out with Korean sauce with green beans, Cole slaw and macaroni and cheese on the side. The chicken was juicy and crunchy and the Korean sauce had a good balance of sweet and spicey. The Coleslaw was flavorless and mayonnaise-y. The macaronic cheese was dry and lacked cheese throughout. The cheese on top was the most perceptible. The green beans also lacked seasoning. I added black pepper at home but it probably could have used something else. The strawberry shortcake was the worst of all. It was yellow cake layered with a strawberry jam and cool whip. Mostly cool whip. It was entirely too sweet and artificial. We were really looking forward to trying this place due to the pictures but it seems as though many of them were taken over a year ago. This was the first spot I bookmarked when coming out to Greensboro and I'm glad I did! I ordered a 3 piece Chicken Tender with Honey Mustard and a Nashville Chicken Sandwich. The tenders were great and not skimpy in size whatsoever! You certainly get your money's worth when you order them. The chicken sandwich is good too. The service was extremely slow for the restaurant being completely empty and they got my order wrong of buffalo wings and they didn't put the sauce on them. When I requested sauce they gave me Texas Pete in a cup. Fries were great but the ranch wasn't great. not enough to carry it up to a 3 star, which I'm sad about because I see a ton of potential here with the breading.
