Growing up we would come to 607 W Russell to visit Mr Carrera. He was our family barber and this used to be Carrera's Barber Shop. Now it is the cutest little bakery with a delicious chicken sandwich! Today I took my mom for an early Mother's day lunch and we shared a few memories. This place is very nostalgic for us. Back to lunch...Mom had the Ham and Brie sandwich, the best part is, their sandwiches come with two sides and a dessert!! I had half a blondie and Mom had the lemon bar. Small, cozy, made by scratch (I assume) but the prices were too high in comparison for a caprese sandwich. Bread was sweet which was unexpected and not a good flavor match. Quiche was the size of a little Debbie muffin which is unacceptable for the price. Infused water was good except it was lukewarm and no ice was offered. I've been twice and both times left thinking it was just okay. I can definitely say their coffee sucks. It's either Luke-warm when they serve it or really weak. I hate having to go to Starbucks but after a particularly unsatisfying coffee experience there (and I tipped 25%!) I drove into Starbucks that's down the street and had to get another coffee. It was hot and well made unlike the horrible experience I had at scratch kitchen. I definitely want to support small businesses but they need to up their game if they are charging those prices for food and coffee and plan to have folks that want to come back. read more

They had some tables for 2 scattered around the house outside. There was only one table that could fit 6. Okay, *full disclosure*: I love little small business cafes. There's something to a little bakery/kitchen that just melts my heart. Maybe it's the creamy frosting, the tiny cupcakes, the cute interior, or the warm sandwiches with unique ingredients, but whatever, I love it. I've been to Scratch a few times now since they opened their doors, and for sure the best thing is the cupcakes. Yup, that's right, just eat cake. In case you're wondering though, the lunch specials are pretty sweet and they have a cute outdoor area for eating lunch. Thus far I've not gone wrong with one of their salads and soups, and with Winter coming on, that's bound to be perfect one of these days. Even the veggies (cauliflower last time I was in) was delish. Again, though: CUPCAKES!!! I can't recommend just one; they're all good. But definitely upgrade to a big cupcake if you're willing to sacrifice the calories. It's the cherry on top of your meal. I met a colleague for lunch here yesterday and had a stellar experience. Lovely setting - just the respite we needed from our crazy work life. GREAT sandwiches and amazing service. My sandwich included two sides AND a sweet (WHAT???). I chose a blueberry muffin, which I brought home and ate later. O.M.G. - maybe the best blueberry muffin I have ever had. HUGE blueberries with a yummy sweet crumble on top. I brought home a to go meal for my husband, and he said the potato soup was so filling he couldn' t finish his sandwich. Found this nice brunch spot based on its yelp ratings...yay for this app! I was happy to find a decent location of a brunch at noon, that was not crazy crowded. I found parking easy as they have a lot. IT is a coffee/brunch spot in the basement of a classic home in SA. Went in and had plenty of places to sit inside and outside. I ended up ordering the coffee, Madame Croque dish, and a carrot cake cupcake. The coffee was a bit light and i was upset because they had run out of the Baby quiche, my first choice. I guess that's a good sign that it is good or they were just short. But either way the dish i had was tasty. The cupcake was DA TROOF! I usually don't get carrot cake but i thought i would try it and it was good. Great service, good food, and nice cupcakes. Happy to support local business! read more

Very pleased to welcome yet another local cafe into San Antonio! Scratch Kitchen has the right mix of a quaint, cozy atmosphere, friendly faces, & delicious, made from scratch food. They also serve White Elephant coffee-my favorite in town! Today we went for brunch, and I had the veggie quiche plate that comes with a salad & little cup of fruit. It was hands down the best quiche I've had with artichoke, spinach, white onion, & a little cheese. The salad & fruit was light & fresh. I couldn't resist getting a few of their cupcakes to try for later. I already scarfed down the mini chocolate one, and it was light, moist, and not overly sweet. Updated review: We went back today for lunch and it was a totally different experience. The flys are gone and we were able to enjoy our food. The BLT is delicious! The sandwich was loaded with crispy bacon--much appreciated--and the traditional toppings, but they add avocado and a garlic mayo spread. The mini pumpkin cupcake included with the meal was moist, with the perfect amount of spice, and the icing wasn't overly sweet. Thankful that the owner, Becky, takes customer feedback seriously. Thick cut slices of bacon between fresh baked bread along with peak of perfection vegetables. Their chips I believe are prepared on site and they are heartier than the usual vending machine bags which more often than not house fragile broken chips. The quinoa salad was my first time having and I want more soon. Loved the taste. Absolutely wonderful. The staff is super friendly and this place feels like home, such a lovely addition to the Alta Vista Neighborhood. I had the Greek Chicken pita, which was delicious. Filled with freshly sautéed chicken, hummus, tzatziki, feta, and lettuce...the flavors meshed perfectly! I had roasted cauliflower and fruit for my sides. The free mini cupcake included with every meal should be enough to get you here. The cream cheese frosting was to die for, super creamy and not overly sweet. I'm so excited about this brand new eatery in Alta Vista! Yesterday was their "soft opening" and today I walked over for lunch. I expected there to be some kinks as they got started, and I was ready to be supportive of this local business and generously overlook some initial awkwardness. As it turns out, this place can stand up to high expectations. The space is beautifully decorated, they know what they're doing, they have a fully developed lunch menu, and the food is really delicious! I had the mozzarella sandwich on their own fresh-baked bread. For $9 that come with 2 sides: I had a salad and roasted cauliflower. Every bite was fantastic--on par with a certain bakery at the Pearl. I finished the meal with a chocolate/raspberry cupcake. Perfect! I'm going to order exactly the same thing next time, but I'll bring my husband so I can taste other dishes. One other thing: I was shocked by the size of their lunch crowd today. Service was efficient, and I nabbed the last outdoor table and got my food quickly. A big group of people arrived shortly afterwards and had a slightly longer wait--but they were offered free cupcake coupons in recompense, so everyone was happy. If you want your choice of tables you might aim for arriving around 11:30 or 1:00 instead of high noon. read more

I just had a very disappointing lunch at Scratch this afternoon. I ordered the "big" house salad (with grilled chicken). This salad is far from inexpensive; $9.00 + $2.00 for chicken. I also added a raspberry cupcake (not sure on exact name) to my order. I should have known this was not going to be a pleasant experience when my salad took nearly 20 minutes to arrive at my table. When it finally arrived, so did the fruit flies!...they were EVERYWHERE!! Not the restaurant's fault, however this was pretty gross. Back to the salad...it was tiny!!!! By no means was this a "big" salad. It was more on the side of being a "side salad." The chicken was cut up into tiny pieces off to the side and looked like little chopped up croutons - I had to ask where the chicken was. Upon first glance I also noticed the yolk to the hard-boiled egg was very runny (a big no-no in my book). The salad was very blah; the owner came by to ask how everything tasted and I had to let her know that the price being charged for this salad is crazy. She offered to bring me more lettuce and showed up with a small bowl of lettuce to add to my tiny salad. The highlight of this meal was the cupcake. It was quite tasty! I would probably return simply to get a cupcake, however WILL NOT spend my hard earned money on the lunch menu. Following this visit I drove to McDonald's and got a kid's meal to fill me up. What a quaint little place tucked in on a corner lot off of San Pedro in the Alta Vista neighborhood. We walked here from Monte Vista so we could justify buying so many delicious goodies! I will keep telling myself that walking 1 block = 1 cupcake lol. The cupcakes were very delicious! I bought many but am pacing myself. The chocolate chip and banana cupcake was perfect. Dense and sweet, it reminded me of my Grandmothers banana bread! I did not try any soup or salad but I arrived 5 minutes before closing and didn't want to be "that" customer. Soft opening today and some of my friends from a watercolor class and I walked over for lunch. Delightful! Charming house and the couple who opened this new place offer sandwiches, salads, soups, and sweets. Every order gets a free cupcake. Each of us enjoyed our lunch. Quinoa bowl was very nice with chilled quinoa mixed with kalamata olives, tomatoes, cucumber, pita chips, and topped with sautéed chicken. Nice contrast between the chill and the warmth. Flavors were fresh and good. Grilled pimento cheese looked really good. The walnut banana cupcake was a blast of sweet and nice that it was a mini cupcake as it made a good ending to the quinoa bowl Will definitely be back to try more on the menu. read more

I rarely write reviews that are this poor, which is so sad because I had such high hopes for this place! My husband and I are new to San Antonio and thought we would grab a quick brunch since it looked so good. We arrived at 12pm exactly and ordered 5-10 minutes after that. And then we waited, and waited. Our food did not come out until 1:30pm. I kid you not, an hour and a half later, for two sandwiches. About an hour and ten minutes after we placed our order, my husband went to check if they had forgotten it, to which they replied "Sorry, we just have a lot of orders right now." I understand that they likely have orders through other avenues such as take out but we watched everyone who was there prior to us receive their food, eat it, and leave. At 1pm it was just us and another couple outside. I feel that this timeline is simply unacceptable for a business, even one that prides themselves on making everything from scratch, especially at a $30 price point. We spoke with them after we finally got our food (which we quickly ate because we were starving at that point), just to let them know that our experience was so disappointing. Surely the business model should be changed if food comes out that slow. To their credit, they were kind and said we could come in again for another brunch if we wanted to. The food was very good but not worth an hour and a half wait in my opinion. I don't think we'll be back unless it's to pick up pastries quickly or something. read more
