Can't believe that my last review of Scubber's is from ten years ago! I've been craving those huge mozzarella logs and still remember how good they taste. It is certainly still an upstate thing and I promise you won't find anything remotely like it deep down in the southern states! The same ordering counter and staff remains, and so has the flavor! I am glad that I can still find my absolute favorite fried mozzarella with melba sauce in Colonie. The cheese log is fried to perfection and it will give you the perfect cheese pull every time. EVERY TIME. There's something about its slightly crispy exterior and savory and melty texture inside that goes so well with the sweet raspberry sauce. I never order marinara with it because to me, their melba is also one of the best in taste and consistency. Besides the fried cheese, their pizza is also pretty good with a very cheesy top and flavorful sauce to coat. The pizza crust is also made not too thin or thick, no doughy toughness but just a slight chew that makes it totally worth it. Their prices are very reasonable still after all these years and I hope that this no frills spot continues to thrive. I will be back every single time I am in the area. However, their lot is shared with another quick serve establishment next door and there are limited parking spots. There are only a few small tables inside if you plan to dine in, and while taking it to go is an option... First was expecting sit restaurant with waitstaff....I stead you order at the counter with only a couple of tables in small area. Second on a Friday afternoon only one person appeared to be working all of the job functions...so service very slow. Beef on weck, as other reviews state, is not good. The bun was burnt, the beef seemed to be a some over voted, some medium, with inconsistent temperatures. I live close by and was enticed by the thought of a wood fired pizza. I called and ordered a small cheese was told 20 mins. It was about 1 hr before close and they weren't super busy but had a few orders to go. 30 mins later I got a decent cheese pizza. Sauce was fresh and acidic with enough fresh garlic to keep a vampire army away. Cheese was good and the crust had a nice chew that reminded me more of a bread type crust. Not too much char for a wood fired oven... not sure what to think about that. Lots of dried oregano/ herbs sprinkled on top that didnt much for me. Like many have mentioned come here for the food if you like it but not the customer service. They're very matter of fact and to the point here. Dont expect any small talk. Also, covid related... neither the cashier or the person making my pizza had masks on. And the customer in front of me didnt have his mask and nothing was said. Take it for what you will. read more

I've really only ever gotten the pizza here and I have to say it is one of the best Margherita pizzas around. I love Margherita pizza. I try it in every pizza joint that offers it so I know what a good one tastes like. This place makes a good one. They use fresh cherry tomatoes, slabs of real mozzarella, fresh basil, parmesan, the sauce is slightly sweet and the crust has that perfect crispy yet chewy texture that you can really only get from a real open flame pizza oven. So I've heard about this place from a few folks around town. Some good, some bad. I decided I would give them a shot. First let me help end a small debate. The restaurant is called Scubbers. Pronounced the way you would say "Scuba Dive" or "Scooby Doo". I had a debate with a friend who insisted it was something else but I knew he was wrong :) The restaurant is essentially a take out joint that probably does a fair share of delivery. They have a few tables inside if you want to chow down immediately. I have heard the mozzarella sticks are really good. I got one order. I was stunned by how big they were. They can't be picked up with out them falling apart. They were good and melty and I went with the marinara sauce (I don't like the melba enough to ask for a full serving). I found the sauce to be acceptable and the breading to lack seasoning. Best in the area? No, no and no. That leads me to the other item I ordered. They called them boneless tenders aka boneless wings. By default I hate boneless wings. Western New Yorkers don't eat boneless wings. They eat bone in wings with blue cheese. The problem is I have heard the wings here are disappointing and a friend said the boneless BBQ were his favorite in the area. So I gave his favorite a shot. I didn't care for them at all. The breading lacked seasoning, the chicken was dry and the BBQ sauce was unique but I am not running back for it. I passed on the blue cheese because that doesn't go with BBQ. I can't prove it but I have a hard time believing they were hand breaded. I also shutter to think that people have this food delivered! They have two other menu options that made me take pause. Tried this for lunch on Thursday. Chose the Italian on ciabatta bread. The sandwich was nothing short of delicious. Cooked to perfection with a perfect amount of meats and vegetables. The home made chips were a good side to what was the best sandwich I had all week. Suggest ordering ahead if you are pressed for time as prep time is about 15 minutes. It's hard to pay over $10 for an order of wings at a counter service joint. Especially if they aren't consistently amazing. The Buffalo chicken tenders are less than $10 and more than enough for a meal. The problem is that with white meat chicken, some of the pieces can be dried out a bit. Some are really juicy. But it still doesn't quite deliver the same satisfaction of a bone in wing. Perhaps I can think of this as a healthy alternative and be happy with the choice. Really what I want is a six piece order of wings. Dare to dream. But the strength of this review lies not in their piquant classic Buffalo style sauce. Rather, I'm adding another voice to the chorus of Scubber's most excellent mozzarella sticks. Sticks is too diminutive a term. Logs isn't quite right. I'm going to go with spears. These spears are kind of awesome. Their fry job is better than Ralph's (my favorite local mozzarella stick) with plenty of crisp and surprisingly greaseless batter. The cheese has good pull and is pleasantly milky. If only it was a bit saltier, these could be a contender for grand champion. On my most recent visit, I found a much improved seating situation from earlier visits (which granted were quite some time ago). Now there are a few four tops and a few more high top deuces. 22 seats in all now makes it a place where one might want to eat in. This place is geared towards takeout which has an order counter with menu boards and four tables for eating in, flatscreen TV on the wall. They serve up their hot chicken wings including plain fried with BBQ sauce on the side and buffalo wings in five different taste choices including X-mild, Mild, Medium, X-hot, and XX-HOT (ATOMIC)!! Besides wings, other offerings include boneless tenders, finger foods, wood fired pizza, salads, sandwiches/wraps (served with natural chips or apple), small desserts (brownies), and Coke fountain drinks. The Beef On A Weck was very good, which is a staple in the Buffalo area and one of my favorite sandwiches. This big sandwich had thinly sliced medium well roast beef au jus on a soft kummelweck roll (plenty of caraway seeds on the crown) with horseradish on the side. The natural chips on the side were nice and crunchy and not salty. The Onion Rings on the greasy side with a thick crunchy batter (beer) and sweet onion rings inside. Stayed at the red roof inn, and wanted something different for a change, so chose this place. Got the beef on weck, mozzarella sticks and a bottle of hot sauce. My 1st beef on weck ever so I have nothing to compare it against. It was great! I'm very picky w my pickles, and this one that came w the meal was spot on. Mozzarella sticks are unlike most that I've had before, and better than most, and the raspberry sauce was a nice bonus, not a marinara guy here. All in all a very good experience, and will 100% going back at a later date. We had already stuffed our faces w hooters wings for lunch, but I hear their wings are bangin as well. Over the last six months, I've had several friends rate Scubbers anywhere from two stars to 5 stars. My wife recalls when they were in Troy, NY back in the 80's and one of her employees raved about the wings. More recently, the raving has been for the mozzarella sticks, especially with the raspberry sauce. I have never been a wing fanatic, but I've always been partial to mozzarella sticks since I first had them in the 60's. So when my sister-in-law requested that we have wings and hot dogs for dinner when she came to visit it seemed like the opportune time to pay a visit to Scubbers. First of all, I recognize that I committed the utmost mortal sin. I asked for both the wings and sticks to go. But it was likely the only way I was going to get to try them both before pigs fly. I dutifully asked the older woman who was both cook and counter helper for a recommendation on reheating my order once I got home. She was friendly enough, and without a smile, told me there was no way to reheat the mozzarella because it would simply melt. I should therefore just eat them at room temperature. The wings on the other hand could be put in a 350° oven for 5 minutes. And so that's exactly what we did. Daniel B. has said the term sticks is too diminutive for the mozzarella, and logs isn't quite right. He believes spears is more appropriate. I have to disagree. Spears might be fine for asparagus or broccoli, but no child in his right mind would ever agree to eating either of those two vegetables if the spears were the size of this mozzarella. I'm reluctant to suggest what crosses my mind that might have a similar girth, so let's just leave it at that until you see them yourself and simply say they are fantastic. And that was even after the drive home. I can only imagine how much better they would have been if I had eaten them in the store... or snuck one in the car before I left for home. I don't want to overlook the raspberry sauce, because it actually has pieces of raspberry in it. I might like the sauce just a bit thicker, but that is such a little thing to pick on at this point. So how were the wings after reheating them in the oven? We had ordered 10 of the Buffalo style and 10 of the BBQ style, both mild hotness. Neither style regained any crispiness, if they had it when I left the store, and this may have partly been the fault of Scubbers. Each order of wings and sticks were tightly wrapped in their individual bag. If I had been on my toes I might have recalled that those bags should have been left open so that steam did not build up and make the wings soggy on the drive home. But maybe the reheating in the oven was supposed to take care of that problem. I don't know. I only know that everyone agreed that there was no crispness to the wings. Most were still moist and tasty, only a couple of the BBQ ones were dry. The Buffalo ones at mild hotness (Scubbers called it smoldering) were just right for our liking for our introduction to them. The BBQ ones at mild gave little evidence of any hotness, we wished for more. Prices are not cheap, but neither is rent on Wolf Road. Ten wings are $10.99; 20/$20.99; 30/$30.99; ...80/$78.99. Two mozzarella sticks are $3,29; 4/$5.49; 6/$7.99. I actually think the sticks are a good deal considering the quality, portion, and enjoyment. We can't offer an opinion for the marinara sauce, but we can fully recommend the raspberry sauce. Their menu includes much more than what we tried. There are wood-fired pizzas, ciabatta sandwiches, wraps, potato skins, nachos, salads, and homemade desserts. Having lived in NYC and traveled all over upstate, these are the best wings I've had. Their sauce is very spicy so be careful, but it has the perfect mix of tang and heat. We got 10garlic parm and 10 mild (which as stated are more med heat)- my usual)and an antipasto salad came to just under $50. They do come with blue cheese(good quality) and rough barely cut carrots and celery stalks. The "new" garlic parmigian wings; according to menu, taste more like a dry fried wings with sage. The wings were warm at best (must have been sitting around)and poorly packaged- no napkins so hopefully you take them straight home. My best tip is definitely order the antipasto salad which was good value and tasty basalmic dressing with ham,Pepperoni, ,salami, cheese, vinegar peppers, and various veggies. Small place with seating for about 6-7 parties. Surprisingly a very large selection of food outside just wings and pizza. They offer salads, wraps, sliders, a few desserts and even fresh roasted vegetables. Place was clean but a little rustic with the concrete cracked floor. The real test for a place like this is the taste. I ordered extra hot wings, waffle fries and fried artichoke hearts. She warned me the wings were really hot. The wings were definitely very warm and pretty good. Not award winning but worth the price. The waffle fries were wonderful, the star of the meal. I am a huge artichoke fan and was excited to see them on the menu but was disappointed in how they turned out. The batter was very flat and tasteless. Prices were reasonable and service was okay. I went in to pick up an order last evening and the man behind the counter had his mask dangling under his chin. Hi all so we've been getting rubber wings for years now from our local spots. so we always cooked our own. last night we wanted wings. so we decided to try Scubbers. very glad we did. crispy and flavorful wings. my adult sun and daughter got bbq and my son in law and I got hot. the hit were perfectly done. and my sin and daughter bragged about their bbq. now don't mind the 70+ y/o man who seems to have a loss of words. seemed a bit crabby to me. but he wasn't grumpy towards us. just not a big talker. now his wife on the other hand was pleasant. I would not hesitate to try their wings! honestly. and as usual, eating there is better than putting the wings in a box to steam. I think they are a bit over priced at $33 per 20 wings. the other place in Albany is $10 cheaper with 3 times the flavors. so will try there and see if the $10 difference is worth it. I don't mind paying good money for food, as long as it's quality. $33 per 20 is pushing it though. the man has been doing this since 1979 and has the same business name! that says something. give Scubbers a try. they also have wood fired pizza. son ate a pice and said it was good. next time we will try pizza and wing combo. read more

They had a good amount of spice and were clean off the bone, so those were good. The pizza wasn't that good. Yelp didn't let me down with those mozzarella sticks. They're about six inches each, and cost $3.29 for an order of two. The batter coating them is different from the usual frozen mozz sticks you'll find elsewhere. It is unseasoned and a thinner coating that almost shatters when you bite it. Although a touch of salt would not be unwelcome, the gooeyness and salt from the cheese renders the breading's flavor rather irrelevant. The breading is only the necessary vessel to deliver the hot, stringy cheese to your mouth. Dipped in sweet-sour raspberry Melba sauce, this is a fantastic snack, and one I'll definitely consider returning for. I wish I felt equally satisfied with the wings, but I was truly disappointed. We chose an order of ten medium-spice wings ($10.99), and I requested extra crispy. To be fair, they warned us that the medium wings were "pretty spicy." "I lived in Buffalo, I can handle it," was my cocky response. I couldn't handle it. The mediums were definitely way spicer than medium wings I've ordered anywhere else. They are a true hot-level wing. The trouble for me, though, was not the spice, but that the wing was all heat, but without the flavor. I've said it before, I'm partial to a wing with the classic butter and Frank's wing sauce, and this is not that wing. It has more of a Tabasco heat, and none of the buttery, garlicky, slow-rising heat that comes from my ideal wing. The texture of the wing was also not for me. As some other reviewers have pointed out, the wings are "clumpy." Perhaps from breading the wings are dunked in, or maybe the sauce themselves, but I that texture was a little off-putting for me. The wings were also a little dry. This is likely due to my "extra crispy" request, but few things are sadder to me than a wing with a floppy skin, so I took my chances. Also disappointing was the wing size, definitely on the smaller end of the scale for these wings. I ate two, and he ate three, the rest went uneaten. I liked this place but I didn't love it. it's pretty small inside, so takeout is your best bet, but they don't package the takeout wings very well, instead of the normal foam containers that most places use they put stuff in paper bags and give it to you on cardboard, so the owners seem pretty cheap. This place is known for their wings, and I thought they were alright. be warned, their spice ratings are off. I got medium and they were hotter than what most places consider hot. their bbq wings were pretty good but the sauce tasted familiar (kinda reminded me of open pit bbq sauce). the wings here are breaded, which I like, but when I went they seemed overcooked. One thing that I thought was great was their homemade mozzarella sticks, definitely try those! especially with the raspberry sauce! their waffle fries were also enjoyable. Super consistent delicious crispy wings. They are never rubbery which is pretty gross and sadly what you will get at many other places. When I was a small child (and we're talking knee-high to a grasshopper here), my parents always got a ton of Scubbers wings to take on our long annual drives to Orlando, Fl. We would eat them for lunches at the rest stops. Back in those days, Scubbers were the most amazing wings you could get. And they had many flavors. I remember them being smaller, tight and crispy and really REALLY good. When I passed Scubbers on Wolf road recently - I had to look twice, and do a loop D loop in the car. Folks - I am going in!!!! This is a little piece of my self history. The memories of scubbers wings came flooding in. Is this the very same scubbers? I think so, but I am not 100% sure. First Visit: Pizza and wings take out. Pizza sucked. Like REALLY sucked. Like Ellio's is three steps above it. But the wings . . they were definately not the same small wings of yesteryear - but they were surprisingly good! Good enough that I would go back. Second Visit: Wings and Mozzarella sticks. When I read they had homemade Mozzarella sticks, I HAD TO. And when I tried one in the car . . I was like . . THANK YOU JESUS! Are you kidding me? These are off the hook delicious. Only one thing . . I think sometimes they may freeze the cheese which makes it a bit plasticy. No! Stop! This is not good food. Nor is it cheap enough to justify the low quality. They don't deserve reasonable star ratings. Stop lowering the bar. We sampled an array of fairly simple dishes. They were all awful. There is no reason to frequent this place. And certainly no reason to pay this much for badly prepared, poor quality. Scubber's has ruined all other wings for me. It is the gold standard for flavor and heat. (For those faint of heart, you had better start off with mild as medium will knock your socks off.) My personal favorite order is large tenders and small Mozzarella with raspberry sauce. (The mozzarella sticks are home made and too die for. They are the best I have ever had in my life, bar none.) The large tenders are more than enough for two people with some midnight snacking left to boot. Scubber's pizza is also great. Try the buffalo chicken pizza it is exceptionally good. Also, they do a nice garlic Parmesan version of their wings and tenders. Finally, their beef on week sandwich is the best east of Buffalo. If you are a buffalo wing connoisseur then look no farther. This place has the best wings in Albany. Probably 3rd best wings in all of the US (behind Anchor Bar and Duffs). I have been going to scubbers for the last 25 years. Before the new location they were in Latham NY. The recipe hasn't changed and it still the best. Wings come in several different sauces: x-hot is what I always go for and it's pretty spicy. The wings are large, meaty, and slathered in a thick sauce which is shaken on, not simply poured on. This results in an even coating. The sauce has some texture to it (i think maybe some flour to thicken?) but it keeps the sauce on the wing while you are trying to eat it. I drive up from NJ once every year just to try the wings at Scubbers because no place else comes close near me. I recently went two days ago and my son tried the wood fired marguerita pizza.
