The service was so confusing for us and they seemed to be confused as well. We had no clue who our server was but also had to flag everyone down to even order. Also, the food is really subpar(minus the mussels, those were great!) we sent back one dish because it was inedible from how salty it was. We had like two bites of it but they still left it on our bill. I would have called over the server again to have them fix it but again they were no where to be found. Still my fave happy hour in Denver (excluding reverse happy hours that is) You can't beat daily 3-5pm HH in a cute space with lots of nooks for seating both inside and outside (outside is covered). Reservations are a good idea but we were seated pretty promptly at a table for 2 Saturday afternoon. The happy hour offerings are diverse, from chips and guac/queso to ceviche bites. We loved everything we tried, in particular the coquettes, which consisted of slightly sweet saturated coconut rice with a thin but super crispy exterior paired with a perfect kick of spicy chili aoli. There was some speck dust and flaky maldon salt that helped balance this sweet & savory dish. We finished with an order of churros off the dessert menu. They're always made-to-order and the crunchy exterior gives way to a still custardy center. The vanilla-lime sugar is a great flavor boost, especially when paired with the brown butter caramel. It is rich but doesn't feel heavy. Lastly, but certainly not least-- the drinks are great here! I loved the mezcal margarita and my friend had the frozen drink of the day (paloma-colada). We sat at the bar for a drink and an appetizer, and the bartenders were so nice and knowledgable. They gave great recommendations (definitely try the churros!) and were so on top of it, filling our waters every time they were below half full. The ambience was really cozy, with plants hanging down and the music at just the right level in the background. Drinks were good and food was good. The green chili was very spicy though, but the server said that this recent batch was spicier than usual so it sounds like it probably isn't quite so spicy. I love that the 20% gratuity is already included in the check. You can leave more, but I personally like it much better when I don't have to sit there and do the calculations. Señor Bear has been one of our favorite spots for a while--creative Latin-inspired dishes, great atmosphere, and usually top-notch service. It's the kind of place we recommend to friends without hesitation. That said, our experience last night was a little off. Our server seemed rushed and didn't take the time to walk us through the menu or offer much guidance, which felt unusual for a place where the service is usually part of the standout experience. We ordered the carnitas, a dish we've really enjoyed in the past, but this time it felt a bit underwhelming. It was presented simply with a piece of carnitas, some guacamole, and radish--missing the depth or balance we remembered. It just didn't quite hit the same way. Also I'd like to add that the aguachile wasn't the best. The avocado was kinda black and mushy and it wasn't very cold, it was almost warm which was disappointing. We'll definitely be back--everyone has an off night, and we know what this place is capable of. Hoping our next visit feels more like the Señor Bear we know and love. read more

I know its been around for something like 3 years but this was the first time we'd visited what with COVID and all . . . and the fact that to get there we ended up going by over-rated Little Man Ice Cream's nightly Marti Gras celebration and up Tejon's Disneyland-like environment only to be reminded that what used to be the blue collar Northside is now trendy LoHi that has displaced the ethnic neighborhoods with White Yuppies in over-priced apts. Uh, where was I? O yeah, standing on a soapbox complaining about the "progress" of a city's gentrification . . . Senor Bear, however, turns out to be an incredible restaurant even though it's sitting there in the middle of Chi-chi-ville. We should all be proud that it's the off-spring of Denver's own mega-talented chef Blake Edmunds, et al. The place is pricey, but worth it. (E.g., $45 for their pescado del dia, but see below since it was indeed something we're uber glad we had). Ate out on the patio (a good choice given where the latest version of COVID is going these days), and had great service. Ordered a cucumber salad, the carne de onca (which translates to raw "jaguar" meat = their redux of steak tartare), their fish of the day and a side of coconut rice. Each one was superb. No. I mean SUPERB (I'm shouting that:). Every dish was a surprise of tastes, unlike anything we've had before. Kind of like what Bruto has to offer = really delicious new ways of preparing recipes you thought you knew, but where you get happily but gently slapping across the face with the creativity and care that obviously goes into each dish. Denver "bucket list" restaurant checked off! I've been wanting to come here for years! The place is super cute and I loved the patio. The service was very patient with us since it took us forever to order. What we ordered: POG cocktail/ mocktails - Pog is one of my favorite drinks so had to try their mocktail version. House bread - I could have eaten the whole thing myself, especially with that butter that comes with it. Patatas - can never go wrong with potatoes and their version of "cheeze wiz" Grilled shrimp - I'm not a big shrimp fan but my husband loved it! Brocoli Saltado - I didn't know what to expect with this but it was yummy! A little spicy but still good. A little hard to share with 4 people. Jerk Chicken - we got this last and I was already too full to eat more, but it was very tasty! Dessert: We got the churros, the tres leches cake and the chaco taco. I think my favorite was the cake. Señor Bear is my new favorite restaurant!! From drinks to food to atmosphere, I absolutely love it here. You MUST get the house bread. I truly don't know how they do it, but it's the most mouth-watering focaccia I've ever had paired with a slightly sweet butter. The bread is slightly charred too which gives it so much flavor. I also think the patatas are a must. I mean, potatoes are hard to mess up, but these really take the cake. Perfectly crispy, covered in a cheesy sauce and fresh seasoning, they're to die for. The cocktails were decent, the food is just meh. They're trying to be creative and completely missing the mark on every dish. I think they're trying to have a Peruvian influence, but it doesn't quite work. The wagyu was so garlicky you couldn't taste anything else (and I love garlic), the lamb was better but still had a lack of exciting flavors. The holiday decorations created a nice ambience but I think during non festive seasons the place is probably not as nice. So fresh and delicious!! Had a great dinner here on the patio. We brought our dog and there was a picnic table area perfect for dog owners. We started with drinks and the cocktails were so juicy. Loved the mix of whisky and tequila in the alpaca smash. The aguachile was some of the best ceviche I have had. The strawberry was so flavorful and we loved how spicy it was! Also highly recommend the bread. It was savory, salty and had a sweet butter with it For our main course, we split the broccoli salts do and the crispy wings. I loved the vegan take on limo saltado and the creepers were a nice touch. Only thing was I would have liked more broccoli and less fries. The wings were the only thing that didn't blow us away, but they were still smoky and tasty. We didn't have room for dessert, but will have to try the churros next time. Two of my party got sick after eating there on Sunday night. On top of that, no one enjoyed their dishes. The lamb was no good, the pork carnitas were okay but also made us sick, and the steak tartare was horrible. We would have liked to send it back, but the waitress was nowhere to be found, and no one ever came by to ask how our food was. To make matters worse, they automatically include a 20% tip, which explains the lack of service. The drinks were very expensive and subpar as well. Also, this is not a budget place; it's more like $$$ to $$$$. Overall, it was a disappointing and expensive night, and I would never go back. I hate to post negative reviews, but I believe in being honest. After I finish this, I will leave a 5-star review for Taco's Uprising, where we had dinner on Friday night--not a fancy restaurant, but good food and great drinks at about half the price of Senor Bear in the 5 Points area. read more

I went for brunch with a friend last week when it was snowing and it was absolutely fantastic!! The host was super nice. I can't remember what our servers name was but he was so nice. I absolutely loved the vibe of the place, the plants, and all the mirrors on the wall. I had the el sanguich-which was just spectacular. Queso, a fried egg, ham and a homemade bun? Tldr: the bear basket (although a bit pricey) includes a variety of foods to try, especially if you come with a sizable group. Drinks are good, but most of them are tequila-based. Server's promises may not be fulfilled - make sure to follow up frequently, and check the bill before you pay. We came around 8-8:30 in a group of 5. We got the bear basket special, which was $55/pp. The server explained that the special includes a variety of dishes, including qppetizers, entrées, and dessert. We shared our dietary restrictions with him, which he jotted down and passed on. Although he didn't have restrictions, my fiancé did express that he really wanted the ribs, and was assured that it would be included among our dishes. Unfortunately, the entrées came out and no ribs were included. The server asked the chef, who said that since we got the chorizo, he wouldn't make the ribs without an additional fee. The chorizo was pretty good, and one of our favorite entrées. But nevertheless we were disappointed since we had specifically asked for the ribs. As a group, we got a variety of drinks, including a frozen mango/guava/passionfruit drink w/ tequila, margaritas, tropical margaritas, and a pomelo cocktail. Our friend specified that he wanted very light ice- like only 2 cubes since he was sensitive to cold drinks. However, both drinks he received had too much ice. Of course, he just took out the ice cubes, but the server said he would comp one of the drinks to make up for it. At the end of the night though, all the drinks were included in our bill. This included a jack + coke that another friend ordered, but never received. That one was taken off our bill, but the rest were included. Breakdown of the food: Appetizers - 1) Yellowtail dish + tostadas, 2) Garbanzo bean + corn dish with plantain chips 3) Bluefin tuna Entrées - 1) Elote (Mexican corn + toppings) 2) Salad 3) Potato + queso 4) Coconut rice 5) Chicken + sauce on side 6) Chorizo 7) Broccoli topped with French fries + fried egg Desserts - 1) Churros + sugary dip 2) Ice cream - smores, berry drizzle, watermelon sorbet All in all, I didn't see many other servers, so maybe our server was overworked. And he did have to go back and forth many times to bring out all our dishes, clear our plates, repeat. That said, many of the things we said got lost somewhere along the way, and colored our experience here. Spontaneously came here on a date. We arrived around 8:15PM on a Wednesday and were immediately seated. The ambiance is beautiful and intimate - lots of plants on the ceiling, smaller dining space, and low lighting. Our server was wonderful - very attentive and had excellent recommendations. We tried the patatas, carne de onca, and ceviche (just a few starters/tapas to snack on). All were incredibly flavorful! He ordered Mezcal - it was phenomenal. I got some food to-go from here, and I was mixed in terms of liking what I got. The guacamole and chips was flavorful, and I really liked the sesame seed and pumpkin seeds in the mix. However, I got the spiced chicken wings, and they tasted really greasy, bready, and (almost) undercooked. The seasoning sauce was tasty, but the chicken itself was not good. The vibe was warm and welcoming. Definitely a spot where you can dress up or down without feeling out of place. Service was great and both the host and our server were super friendly. My spicy margarita was delicious, and felt elegant with the Chile salt rim and thinly sliced hot peppers as garnish. My friends had caipirinhas and enjoyed them as well. Everything we ordered was delicious, but the portions were small. I realize you're paying for the quality of the food, and you certainly get a fantastic meal, so I wouldn't hold the small portions or cost per item against them. But it's something to be aware of. We did leave satisfied, having shared four items amongst our group of three women. Two of us split ceviche, and two split chicken empanadas. Otherwise, we shared the salad, garbanzo and plantain chips, and patatas. The garbanzo dish was especially light. We scraped up every drop of the dip! Here's my one real gripe: they serve chips and guacamole, but ONLY DURING HAPPY HOUR. Why?? It's such a crowd pleaser and we would have loved to order some for our table at dinner. We got the impression that the reasoning is it's not fancy enough for this "elevated" restaurant's regular dinner menu, but that just strikes me as silly and pretentious. Came here for happy hour with a friend. Their happy hour palomas and margs are both delicious. Would recommend either. We split some appetizers. We split the queso (plain without toppings), pork rinds, and I got a homemade "chalupa". My friend has a lot of food allergies, so we did opt out on some of the toppings & options of things to split, but I'll have to come back to try the queso with the pepitas, cheese, and other toppings on top. I thought the chalupa was the most delicious part of the meal - great sauce, fresh toppings, perfectly cooked meat, and the delicious soft/crunchy shell. I'm not a huge pork rind fan, and the queso would have been nice with the toppings :) Love the vibe of this place. I have only done brunch and happy hour here, and this review is for hh. I really like this place. Spacious bar, and sometimes the bar goes longer for specials. The queso is always changing in presentation over our years there, but still is always fantastic. Sometimes we go there just for that. $8 on hh. The gordita crunch is amazing. Get that too. $5 on hh. The pic below is for the queso and crunch. Most drinks are on special also and ask for their daily frozen drink flavors, as they are always shifting. The lager was the beer special and was pretty cheap. They had great decorations for the holidays, and even had a DJ setting up behind the bar when we were there last. Finally, if you like hot sauce, make sure to ask for the hot sauce. Housemade, but pay attention to instructions. One is a normal bear hot sauce, and the other one is the death one. The death one has better flavor, but be very respectful in amount poured on. As far as service, we seem to always get someone different behind the bar, but the training is always evident whoever we get. Note that this is a place that adds on the 20%. Oh, and although I didn't review the place in many, many past trips, their brunch is also solid on the weekend. I definitely recommend and see you there. read more

Wonderful casual spot for drinks. This place seems to be quite busy on weekends - our group of 9 came without a reservation and we were initially turned away, however we ended up being able to sit at the bar and had a wonderful time. All of our bartenders were wonderful. I explained that I was here for my bachelorette and hoping not to totally pass out and one of my bartenders was very nice, slipping me coconut water and also a coconut horchata drink in between my other drinks. Very nice of her to do me a solid like that lol. All of the cocktails are unique - I got the cucumber mezcal cocktail which was quite good, as was the matcha one. We were seated outside on a nice evening. The outdoor area is nice, not too much traffic noise. The menu is fairly limited. Nice selections for sharing, but not really a place to get your own meal. I was in the mood for veggies, but there really aren't too many healthy options. The roasted carrots were very flavorful, but 12 smaller carrots slathered in rich dressing for $16 seems a little steep. The broccoli was really a helping of French fried potatoes with a couple of pieces of broccoli added to the rich dressing for $17. IOnly one salad option, which we didn't order. Our ribs were great. Brandon is the best waiter that we've had in such a long time. We got a couple of Margaritas, a Mini Queso, and Gordo Crunches and were instantly sold on the quality. We stayed after happy hour and got the beef wagyu, chorizo sausage, and coconut rice dishes and honestly have never had a better meal.
