My companion is a vegetarian and ordered a cheese enchilada plate. The enchiladas were just tortillas with hardly-melted cheese inside and a little sauce on top. It came with rice, beans, and salad. In Mexican restaurants, I've come to expect tasty refried beans; these were just whole pinto beans that looked like they had just been dumped out of a can. The bill, with one soft drink, came to over $38. I hate being so negative and would like to give a neighborhood place like this a good review. But these folks really need to up their game. read more

Great little spot in South Pasadena. They share a parking lot with a salon and laundromat, but there's free street parking around the corner up the residential streets. Our party of 3 all ordered the fish taco plate that comes with two fish tacos, rice, beans and salad. Perhaps it was an off day for them but I felt like the fish tacos were not freshly fried nor did it come out piping out like most do after being just battered and fried. The rice was parboiled so it tasted hard. The beans appeared like they were just out of a can and then salted. The salad had a salsa that on it that was a bit too spicy for me. Since we don't like to waste food, we all just ate the tacos as they were still edible. As for the rest, we took them home. I reheated the whole thing on stovetop until the rice and beans softened, then cracked a couple of eggs on top and WOW, brand new dish and enough for two meals! The service was terrible. My mom and I had ordered nachos and the cashier had known us since we are usual customers, so he charged us for the small plate of nachos and gave us the large portion. I think he was trying to be nice? We explained that there was no need, we can pay full for the large nachos. Reluctantly, we saw how nice the cashier was by his own means, we paid for what he charged us with and waited for our food. While we were eating someone from the back of the kitchen comes to our table and scrapes half of the nachos to another plate with a fork and makes a comment that the cashier didn't charge us for the right portion. It was so embarrassing!! We were happy to pay for the meal correctly and we explained that the cashier did that on his own and we told him no it's ok that we can pay for the rest, but he insisted. I grew up with one of these a few miles away, it was rare for me to be able to eat it, since I didn't have a car. My high school friends always looked forward to the burritos here saying it's so bomb. I always think of the past whenever I eat here. Carne Asada Burrito (4/5) This is a standard setting burrito, it is what I think authentic burritos should taste like. The meat is salty, the meat tastes of roasted chili peppers that is still doing it's capsaicin thing, and there are hints that raw onions were used, maybe cilantro, some lime, beans. I know it's subjective since burritos is wildly common in LA. Let's say Sonora Town is a 5 and Del Taco is a 3, this would be a solid 4. Complimentary salsas: Tomato (2/5) El Pollo loco makes it better, I do recommend the Tito's Tacos salsa that's a solid 5, long line though. Black (4/5) I enjoyed the dark roasted pepper taste. I think it's Chipotle peppers? Green (5/5) I'm actually a fan of the sourness and spiciness of this salsa, it's very sharp, like lemon and lime sharp. This place is pretty big and you can always find about 10/20 people here around lunch time, it's worth stopping by if you magically found parking in DTLA and also are nearby. read more

Senor Fish just happens to be located on a route that I frequently run with my local running group, the Pasadena Pacers (Hi, Pacer friends!). I'm familiar with their other locations in Eagle Rock and Downtown LA, and have only ever had positive experiences at each of their locations. This spot has an extensive array of dishes to choose from, including Mexican staples such as burritos, tacos, quesadillas, enchiladas, and more! For breakfast, my go-to dish is their chilaquiles, which I order with the addition of "well-done/crispy" carnitas. Servings are very generous, and include a side of beans and breakfast potatoes, and everything is perfectly topped off with the addition of salsa and crema. Their breakfast burritos and fish/shrimp/scallop burritos are also favorites! As a creature of habit, I don't often stray from these selections, but I am curious to try their nachos and loaded fries sometime soon! They've also got great agua fresca drinks, with rotating flavors. The strawberry one is my favorite but they only seem to have it every 3-4 times I visit, which isn't often enough if you ask me! This location shares a parking lot with a laundromat, and is located conveniently across the street from a pretty busy Trader Joe's. Street parking can be found on Grand Ave. Service here is quick and friendly, and there is ample space both inside and in their outdoor dining area for groups. So overall: -The good: Great Mexican staples and a wide variety of selections at reasonable prices! Service is quick and friendly, and they accommodate variations and special requests for your orders. This location is not as busy as their Eagle Rock and DTLA locations, but the food is of similar quality. -The bad: The parking lot is small, but parking is relatively easy to find on Grand Ave. -The ugly: A group of friends from my running group had planned to eat here after a morning run in March. Despite it being regular business hours, they were not open and did not answer the phone. I absolutely love this place. I come here with my friends whenever we're going on a trip or on the weekends whenever. The Taco combo special is amazing. It's a great deal. I always get the two fish tacos and all rice. No beans. I just personally don't like beans. Hate me for it. Whatever. Or maybe I just like rice a lot. The fish are fried and they're very crispy on the outside and very tender and soft On the inside. they add a lot of vegetables salsa and sour cream on the taco. It's absolutely amazing. When my son was a wee lad we used to go to The Señor Fish on Sunset Blvd in Echo Park on Fridays. They had our favorite nacho plate. They've since closed, but fortunately there's a Señor Fish in our new neighborhood and it's just as good! My son loved their enchilada plate, my husband is always satisfied with a couple of asada tacos and I love their tortilla soup, it's my go to when it rains or if I'm sick and craving comfort food. Took that chance yesterday after walking by and ordered a two tacos (asada and pastor) special and a side of fries. Again, the service was pretty good, very friendly waitress. Took a bite of my burrito and it has a small layer of meat. No big deal, burritos tend to start kinda slow. My wife took a bite of one of her tacos and she looked less than impressed, she didn't speak but I knew something was wrong. As I worked more and more into my burrito, I realized why she wasn't impressed. The meat was just reheated, it had lost flavor from yesterday and was replaced with meat that tasted worse than Del Taco meat. It was devastating. I've been passing by this restaurant for years and finally I decided on eating something for dinner. The interior is a bit boring in decor but it's very spacious. I ordered a fried fish burrito with all the fixings and requested the hottest chili all for around 11 bucks. It's a bit pricy but the burrito is really big and the ingredients tasting very fresh. We stopped by for lunch after my daughter's softball game on the recommendation of a friend. There is one small table for two outside in the parking lot; all other seating is indoors. They were out of quite a few kinds of fish, which was a bummer. We placed our order and took a seat. 5 minutes later, the staff came to our table and informed us that the fish we ordered was also out of stock. We subbed a third choice fish and waited for our meals. The food was fine. Not great, not terrible. Just fine. The portions were stingy for a place that charges what they do and serves food on paper plates. I paid $16 for a small piece of salmon that was about the size of my palm. (I am short and have small hands.) Protein portions for all of our meals was light. Most of the plate was taken up by mediocre beans and not quite warm rice. The salsa was also fine. The burritos were thick, but unfortunately most of that was taken up by cheap filler like rice and beans instead of protein. Cheese was conspicuously absent, and it was missed. The salsa portion was also stingy. The fish tacos, which initially drew us in, was a disappointment. The fish was - at best - low end grocery store quality. This is not high end stuff, folks. The carne asada meat was also okay. Unfortunately, it was not at all seasoned and was just bland. In all, we paid more than $60 for four entrees for four people. Balancing value and quality, I did not think it was worthwhile. And you're definitely not paying for ambiance or maintenance here. The tables were not terribly clean. The floor was visibly dirty. Bathrooms were not well stocked and had not been taken care of. It was okay this one time, but I wouldn't return. There are SO many better spots in LA for fish tacos. read more
