Such an unexpected little breakfast spot. Food was incredible and probably one of the best breakfast meals in Seward.

It's on the main downtown street and there's plenty of diagonal street parking. Lots of seating in the cafe with a mix of sofas and tables. The pastries looked great, albeit a tad expensive. I got a day old ham and cheese ($3) and a latte, which were delicious. The Wifi password is posted at the cashier stand, and my VPN worked fine. Oh, the hours are 7 am to 6 pm (not 7 pm). We're traveling full time with two kids and trying to run a foundation as we go, so we spend a lot of time in coffee shops with free WiFi, all over the world. The Sea Bean in Seward is one of the best. The coffee was delicious, the food fresh, conscientious and interesting. Best of all the couple who run the place are delightful and seem to be more central to the Seward community than the mayor. We went here every morning for several days and were delighted to be welcomed as a part of their community so quickly. So, if you are going to the Kenai Peninsula, in Alaska, and you're looking for a nice place to relax for a few hours... be sure to stop by the comfy couches at 'the bean, and say hi for us. read more

The Sea Bean is a very sweet, convenient coffee shop right on the main drag of Seward's downtown strip. While their food isn't anything to write home about, the coffee is all fair trade, the tea selection is impressive, and convenience of surfing the internet while sipping a coffee (or usually yerba mate in my case) in a shop can feel like pure bliss sometimes in rural Alaska. The great thing about the Sea Bean is that they're open year round, serving coffee and charm to us locals long after the other coffee shops have lifted stakes and closed their doors until the tourists come back. The owners of the coffee shop and apartments above & behind (Sauerdough Lodging) are great people and so fun to chat with. They were my landlords too! I loved relaxing in this place. They had wifi available as well as a computer set up in the corner (a saving grace for those of us who are smart phone hold outs). It was a cozy place where we could sit and relax without feeling like we were imposing. The sandwiches were good, but not quite good enough for a 5 star rating. I had a ham and macaroni and cheese sandwich. They had a wonderful selection of coffee drinks. I only like crappy Starbucksesque concoctions so have opinion on the quality of the actual coffee. One downside is that, although they advertise being open later than surrounding businesses, it is unclear when the kitchen closes. The customer behind looked at the sandwich menu and asked when they closed. He was told the closing time, but not when they . Excellent coffee, great Paninis, lounging couches, plenty of tables, Free Wireless Internet, Mac computers, right downtown, good view of the Mt. Alice, clean, friendly, and a nice vibe! This place started out ok, but ended on a bad note. Breakfast was good, but a bit small for the high prices. Great flavored coffee menu and those were tasty. We hung around a bit and enjoyed our coffee on the sofas. It was relaxing and the free WiFi was nice. We were thinking of continuing to work and have some lunch, but the crew changed. Got some coffee, breakfast, smoothie and a Croissant. Nutella croissant was delicious with lots of nutella in it. Breakfast wrap was filling and pretty good. Can't beat it for coffee in Seward. Great place to lounge and enjoy your coffee or tea. The have at least 30 teas to try. The Coconut Pouchong tea was great. I also had the Pieces of Eight coffee drink with soy and it was great. The place has about 6 couches and lots of tables and chairs. A great hang out/meeting place for everyone. Come in and listen to the boat captains and crew and listen to the stories. We'll be back for sure. read more

Pros: Convenient, clean, chill music, good atmosphere. Cons: Poor service, bad tea, and decent food. My family and I traveled to Seward for a little get away, after all of the good reviews on Yelp, we decided to give Sea Bean a try. We went for lunch at about 12 pm, on 8.11.12, the place was not busy, there were only about two tables filled. We sat down at a table, we were waiting for one more person to arrive. When she arrived we went to the counter to order. We were never greeted. The Barista just stood there and stared at us. We all ordered, there were four of us, I ordered a cup of tea, she asked what size, then no other questions. I asked her if I just needed to tell her what kind of tea I wanted, she stated 'pick it out and hand me the canister', mind you, there were right by her 'coffee machine'. I did so. Again, no acknowledgement, nothing. Just attitude. She brought me my tea, the water was so hot, that I have a blister on the top of my mouth, and the tea was bitter, and scalded. So I threw it in the trash. Our panini's were ok. I decided on the Sea Bean, because someone had stated there were good 'vegetarian' options. There was a veggie panini, so I ordered it. The avocado wasn't ripe, it was like biting into an apple. The 'barista/waitress' that we had the pleasure of encountering before, gave us our food, the first two came out, she just set them in the middle of the table, and disappeared. No silverware, nothing. We had to wait about 10 minutes for our second two panini's to arrive, no apology, nothing, just set them on the table and left. In summary: Food was just decent, service was poor, and the tea was horrible. I will not be returning. I'll just go across the street to The Ranting Raven for our tea and lunch. read more

The food here is good but the wait is not worth it. It took nearly 45 minutes to get our food today and we are not the only ones waiting this long. After all that my husband was given the wrong thing. We didn't bother to complain since we couldn't wait around for the correct one. Last time we were here was slow too. Also the attitude of the girls at the counter both times have been pretty nasty. Today we listened to the girl be snarky and rude to the guy cooking. We won't be back. Stopped in with my wife to grab a coffee before a tour. House coffee for me, iced Jolly Roger (caramel and hazelnut latte) for my wife. House coffee was good; nothing all that unique, but I'm not picky. Hers, however, was one of the smoothest coffee drinks I've ever had. Super good. Ample seating, and a nice atmosphere - they have couches to sit on, and lots of books if you feel like staying and killing some time. My only complaint was that it took us a little while to get service. When we walked in, only one person was working and she seemed to be between making food and taking orders (we were in no hurry, so not a big deal). Two other employees showed up afterwards, so I'm sure there isn't too bad of a wait most of the time. Prices are about normal for coffee in Alaska. Maybe a little high because it's Seward, but don't expect anything to be cheap in a town that makes a big portion of its living off of tourists. read more

They lost my order in their system and made me wait 40 mins. They kept serving other guests. While waiting someone else came back into the shop complains that their order was wrong. We had been road tripping all morning and were looking forward to a good lunch. Seward seemed to offer a number of choices so we stepped into The Sea Bean. The menu posted in the window offered what appeared to be healthy options. I went with their version of a Buddha Bowl but was disappointed. I'd ask for no onions yet it was covered with onions. The avocado was bruised and mushy - inedible to me. The rice was white. Who makes a Buddha bowl with white rice? On top of that, it was so undercooked it was crunchy. The sauce was way too sweet and detracted from the sweet potatoes. I ended up leaving more than half of this lunch on the plate. Oh, but the smooth we had with lunch was tasty! Maybe the poor quality of lunch explains why the place was almost empty at lunchtime. Great place for day-trippers to take a break, sit down in comfort (sofas or tables) have a coffee, lunch, check out your email or internet. Home away from home. We got off our cruise in Seward, dropped our luggage at the train station and headed downtown on the free bus. Sea Bean is just up the street from the aquarium (SeaLife Center). We tried eating somewhere else but after 10 minutes of being ignored we went to Sea Bean and immediate service and never hassled after resting for half an hour before continuing our explorations in Seward. The good: atmosphere, location, music, seating, WI-FI The bad: Drinks are sub-par. I had the Minty Madam. For a $4 small drink, I couldn't taste any peppermint at all. I had to go back and ask for an extra. My "other" had a blended iced mocha. It tasted like straight chocolate syrup. Wheres the coffee? I felt like the coffee shop itself had a slightly pretentious tone to it with less than friendly baristas. Though, they weren't un-friendly, so I'll give them the benefit of the doubt. Really glad I found this place while I was frantically trying to find a shower after camping out on the Resurrection River for a few days. Not that they had a shower, but they do have some awesome lunch choices and good coffee. I got the Mayflower.. a panini with turkey, bacon, lettuce, cream cheese, and cranberry sauce. It was too good not to eat the whole freaking thing. They have free wi-fi and there is a ton of comfortable seating and outlets for your computer! The only downside, and I don't know if this is a common thing, but they ran out of a lot of stuff early in the day so I was constantly hearing the barista apologize to customers about being out of certain things (not enough orange juice for a smoothie, no pennies, etc). I stumbled upon this place with my boyfriend while camping in Seward. It's always going to be a favorite of mine now. Their coffee is really tasty and I love the specialty drink names. Their tea selection is amazing, I love Golden Moon, especially the chai. Also, the Breakfast Panini is the item to order. The herbed bread they use for it is awesome. The service is a bit slow even if there was only one barista; the place wasn't packed nor were the other patrons orderings. I think most come to hang out or use the wi-fi. I ordered a minty madame and croissant BLT & veggie barley soup. My drink wasn't even warm :( Bummer cuz I was looking forward to a hot drink on a cold windy day. About 25-30 minutes later my sandwich came out. I think they were curing my bacon in the back or something. The sandwich itself was pretty good :) But the soup was meh. Didn't think you could mess up veggie barley soup but apparently you can make it taste bland. I'd come back again for a small casual lunch, but not with the expectations of a quick lunch. Great locally roasted coffee and friendly service. Lots of specialty coffee drinks to be had as well. They were busy this morning for breakfast but managed to get our orders or quickly. I liked that we were able to customize each of our breakfast sandwiches based in some dietary restrictions as none of them were pre-made. We were big fans of the free Wi-Fi and the comfy couches and ample seating. The prices were reasonable compared to the higher rates for everything here in Seward. We would pay them a return visit. Works if you're just getting a coffee and need wifi. If you're hungry, I'd skip it. We ordered an Apple Fritter(which was sadly 'Apple-less'), a Bear Claw(which seemed stale with very little filling), and a Breakfast Bowl(which was supposed to have scrambled eggs, bacon and guac, but instead came out with a very dry pork, chips and salsa with cold scoops of quinoa). I also had to repeat my order to the gal who was taking it, 3 times. Never once did she smile at us or say 'thank you'. Hopefully things will improve on the items mentioned.
