Cool place. It's not the biggest but the food is great and they have live music sometimes. Highly reccimmended.

Great Irish food in the Bel Air downtown area. Be sure to call ahead and reserve a table for dinner for parties of 6 or more. The downstairs bar area gets really crowded and the wait can get long for dinner on a friday or saturday night. The shepherd's pie is delish. read more

I always have a good time at Bolans. It's best to go on a weekday night as the bar is crowded on the weekends. Great selection of beer and micro-brews. The bartender we had knew his beer and made some great suggestions. Had the corned beef and cabbage rolls appetizer and it was really good. I walked in expecting the usual bar fare. I was deliciously surprised when I got my mini lamb chops in wine reduction. Wow! They were so darn good. Perfect flavor and texture. Came back another time for more and also got the red pepper gouda soup. A huge bowl of savory soup that was different than anything else I'd had. This place is a gourmet delight hidden away in a deafening bar atmosphere. Bring ear plugs so you can enjoy your meal in peace and order the non-bar fare items for a wonderful culinary experience. We have eaten here at least 10 times, we've always had something different and I can honestly say none of it has been bad. This is some of the best food in town! It can get a bit loud downstairs so unless you are going to watch a game I would say try to eat upstairs. Everybody who works there is always nice, you never get the sense that they don't enjoy their jobs. The Guinness stew, the pork chop, the crab cakes, the onion rings, and the bread pudding are some of our favorites. It really is just wonderful food and a great place to eat. read more

Surprisingly great food for a pub! We needed to stop for dinner on the way home after a good weekend of fine dining, family, and refreshing Bay air. We normally choose Bel Air for dinner on our way home from the Baltimore area, because of the plethora of casual dining choices at the crossroads of Baltimore Pike and Route 24. This time, I just couldn't face Taco Bell or anything else with sticky tables, so we hauled out the iPads, started poking around on Yelp, and ended up on Main St. in 'Historic Bel Air' -- quite a change from the overdeveloped shopping center district we usually visit! Sean Bolan's looks quite small from the outside, but it takes up two floors, so there is plenty of room to dine. The upstairs was reputed to be a bit quieter, so we asked for a table up there (although there are bars on both floors, downstairs seems to be the domain of the drinkers and sports-watchers; upstairs was mostly people eating dinner). Not expecting much, hubby ordered a local draft beer (I was driving), a basket of onion rings, and we both ordered salads. He got the House Salad with grilled chicken; I got the Chicken Pear Salad. What we both noticed immediately was the high quality of the grilled chicken. Generally, if you order a salad with chicken in anything but an upscale restaurant, you get hard little strips of overcooked, dry chicken. These pieces of chicken were freshly, expertly grilled, soft, and delicious! Both salads were fresh, and filled with good greens (no iceberg!), and generous amounts of tasty ingredients. I was especially gratified that the candied walnuts in my salad weren't the candy-sweet walnuts that restaurants usually throw on top of salads like this: these were just slightly sweet, large, fresh, crunchy, and well-spiced. Both the balsamic and champagne vinaigrettes were winners, too! I was only sorry that because of how amazing the onion rings were (great breading, hot and crispy, generous, fresh, thick onion slices), we hadn't left room for dessert: I'm certain the house special -- homemade bread pudding, with Crème Anglais and cinnamon -- is a winner! We've made a promise to return on our next visit to Baltimore-area family, and will definitely leave room for it next time. Oh, and the waitstaff was excellent! They were pretty much the perfect expectation of waitstaff: at our sides the moments we thought we wanted something, and invisible otherwise. Good solid pub in downtown Bel Air. The roasted red pepper and smoked gouda soup with crab is the stuff dreams are made of! The fish and chips make my English neighbors long for home.
