Review based on a "date night" for dessert and wine. Arrived after dinner, but early, around 8ish. I had been looking forward to trying this place based on the great words from other Yelp-ers and also the location is near my boss's house - and I am there ALOT. Cool building (hotel) that sets a quirky designer tone to go up to the space (on the Second Story of the hotel!!). In a word: massive disappointment. It's hard to dislike a place that's this innately likable but: + 1 star - lots of flat screens and the Lakers game was on +1 star - sexy lighting, attractive color scheme in the paint and fabric choices for booths. However, bar feels somehow sterile and the cneter high tables cold and unappealing. Oh, maybe they were cold and unappealing because at 9pm on a date night there was a grand total of 1 table having dinner and 3 people in the bar. +1 star - good muzak - more music than zak - 1 star - The fondue. A few Yelp reviews mentioned it. Yes, it is tasty chocolate, but it had been over heated and had separated. Oh, and the amount of "accessories" for the fondue was just too few. Three measly slices of banana? Come on!! And the chocolate brownie chunks to dip? If those weren't store bought I'll be a monkey's aunt. And who the hey gives you BLUEBERRIES to dip? Retarded. + 1 star - Not a bad choice of wines on the list. We got champagne. - 1 star - Really, this was a crime. The glasses are so crappy. Chunky, clunky, graceless, heavy, unattractive. Horrible. There's nothing that spoils a pricey bottle of bubble faster than catering style glasses. Except.... - 1 star - The server brought the sparkling nectar of the gods and, not only was the bottle not icy cold (please people, see The Palms for how this stuff should be served) but then she attempted to pawn off a wine chiller (one of those *cheezy* plastic containers that looks like an acrylic bathroom trashcan meets bathroom water glass) to us rather than a bucket. You could almost hear the begrudging ice shoveling over the background noise prior to her return. +1 star - The bill is brought in a book - very cute and funny idea. We had a humorous time reading quotes out of the book, of which we would have read more if the server hadn't.... - 1 star - .... rushed us totally and completely in every possible way. Now, mind you, we came for dessert and drinks. We ordered a pretty nice bottle o booze. We would have ordered more. But the rather unpleasant server not only brought the bill without asking us if we were ready (she did make some vague noises about closing out and we asked if the bar was closing as it was only getting to be 10pm and were told that no, it wasn't closing, but that she would bring us the bill - um, isn't your job to not just bring us stuff but to try to sell us more stuff so the facility makes more money??), but came back TWICE (in a space of about 15 minutes) to see if we had paid. Mind you, there was only 2 other people in the bar at this time. And we asked if they were closing. And the answer was no. I don't give this place a chance of doing very well if they are going to have this kind of service. The restaurant is located in side the hotel on the second floor. Great place for HH Monday - Saturday: 4pm - 7pm & Sunday: 4pm - 10pm .They offer : $4 house wine/ well drinks and beers. For the foods, it is half off certain items on the menu range from appertizer to dessert. Main Course: Pancetta wrapped Pork Tenderloin $12 , Fish & Chip is $8, Brick Chicken $12 & Burgers $7.50. Great deals as they are all full-sized portions. The Pork Tenderloin was delicious. The decor is contemporary, clean and nice. They don't have that many waitress/waiter so you do have to wait for service but our waittress was very nice and helpful. Valet parking is free for dining at the restaurant. No self park. The vintage looking lights in this venue that represent a slightly abstract version of a collection of upside-down wine glasses or really large bubbles hanging from the ceilings. I would definitely want some of these lights in my house one day! Other than those lights I think the decor was a little plain and the color choices with everything in muted, dull color tones which didn't make me feel like partying or socializing as much as brighter, more inviting colors would but the seating is nice and there is plenty of it which is great for a restaurant bar in a hotel. The appetizers we had were pretty good but could have had a little more flavor in my opinion. The spinach pastries were a little mushy though...the best were the empanadas and the spring rolls, but the additional dipping sauces were good with almost every dish. But then again we didn't try anything but finger foods so I bet something else is better there, right? read more

Like many yelpers have mentioned, Second Story is located inside the Belmar Hotel, which is a good thing because it's not overly packed! The BF and I came here on Friday evening for happy hour and left very happy. The happy hour menu is basically 50% off wine, well drinks, and beer on tap (food items that are part of the 50% off is marked with a little cocktail next to the item on the menu). We ordered the street tacos, which were OK -- at $12 for 3, I would rather get 3 for $3 out of a taco truck. The mac and cheese was yummy! (although also not part of happy hour). We also ordered the meatball sliders, which was also very tasty. The service was great here! Very friendly staff. I also like the fact that I can actually find a seat here because it's not too crowded. Parking is easy to find on the street or there is always valet. read more

I really liked the vibe of this loungey, upstairs restaurant in the Belamar Hotel. There's a chic, boutique feel throughout this hotel, and it filters through the restaurant as well. When we entered, we saw a sign that said to seat ourselves, so we chose a (HUGE) table near the window. It was actually kind of fun for just the two of us to be at this massive table; it felt very insular and private. At 7:15 on a Wednesday, there were plenty of open seats, and while it never filled up completely, there was a lively crowd there as the night went on. Also, there was a fourplex of TVs playing the Brady Bunch on repeat (in sync). That was a cool touch :) We ordered off the Dine LA menu; I started with the Watercress and Baby Arugula Salad. I liked the dressing a lot, and the red and yellow beets were a yummy addition. I tried my date's Heirloom Tomato Gazpacho Soup and thought it was okay. I know gazpachos are usually kind of chunky, but I wasn't a fan; it was kind of like a tomato flavored watermelon slushie. For the entree, I ordered the Crispy Ginger Marinated Tofu. I really liked the sweet and sour reduction and the succotash it was served on was delicious. I had a bite of my date's Pan Seared Atlantic Salmon and it was good, but not amazing. I think it had a citrusy sauce. And for dessert, we got the Banana and Nutella S'mores and the Peaches and Cream. Both were pretty good (apparently roasted peaches are awesome), but I'm a chocolate person so the S'mores was my favorite. Also, sea salt caramel ice cream?! Count me in. For drinks, I had a glass of the Pinot Grigio and a Samuel Smith's Cider. My date had the High Class Gin Martini (he thought there wasn't enough vermouth), and then he had a few of my new favorite drinks: the Late Checkout (Jim Beam, syrup honey, fresh lemon, and mint). On my most recent trip out to Manhattan Beach I stay in the hotel that shares the building with Second Story Restaurant. In the 10 day there I was in most every night for at least a quick drink, and I had dinner a couple of times there. Super cool bar staff, very friendly and talkative, and quick and efficient. The guys working at the bar also informed me on all of the hot spots in the Manhattan Beach area. All the food that I tried was excellent, and the mixed cocktails were super tasty. I honestly tried this place because it was in the same hotel, but after giving the Second Story Restaurant a shot, I'm a fan. Super cool bar staff and tasty food. Went for DineLA with a group of 7. From the reviews that I read previously I have to agree that this place seems busy when it's actually not. I have to say that service was lacking although the place was pretty empty on a Saturday night. It took us over 15 minutes to get some water- we had to actually call another waiter to remind them to bring us water. Although service was slow and lacking, when the waitress did come to our table, she was very nice and tried her best to be accommodating. When we received our main course, one of my friends didn't receive his in time, and so the waitress brought my friend soup while he waited for his main course. Also, since you can get a free glass of house wine, the waitress just gave us a full bottle because 5 of us used the yelp offer. On top of that, because the house wine wasn't chilled, she decided to give us another bottle, one that was much better than their house wine! Definitely enjoyed the service when she did come around to our table. I ordered the mac and cheese for my appetizer. The mac and cheese was okay, I thought it was a bit dry. For my main course, I ordered the pork loin, which I thought was also on the dry side. Not the worst pork loin I've tried, but definitely not something that I will want again. I was especially excited for the dessert because a lot of the reviews raved about their desserts. Since I found the rest of the meal lackluster, I was anticipating my dessert (I forgot what I ordered... that's how "amazing" it was). The dessert was disappointing. Cute bar tucked away in a boutique hotel across the manhattan beach mall. Dropped in for a quick drink with a friend and had a pleasant time. Whether you're going with friends to catch up or a hot date, the ambiance is just right. Happy hour is pretty good, and the bar food wasn't bad. Also has Tvs - in case your date isn't that interesting. They'll gladly turn it to the game for you. After reading the many reviews from my fellow Yelpers, i thought i would give it a try. Went here for happy hour on last Friday. I have to say that it's hidden in a residential area and on the 2nd floor as previously stated. Ambiance.....was pretty cool. There were quite a few people sitting in the bar and dinner area. I was pleasantly surprised to see the diversity....given the area i was in. Food.....i ordered the fish and chips, calamari and boneless wings. Fish and chips were definitely as good as any fancy seafood restaurant. Unfortunately, i can't say the same for the calamari and boneless wings. My calamari seemed more of the imitation kind. I frequent places (Union Cattle / Cheesecake Factory / grand lux) with really good calamari, and "second story" would be my least favorite. My boneless wings came out burnt. I was shocked when the server placed them in front of me. My first thought was....does she really expect me to eat these burnt ass wings. After taking a bite of one, I kindly told her, i don't eat burnt food and these are quite burnt. I'm thinking the wings would be okay if they were cooked properly, because the sauce had a decent taste. Service.....i've had way better. The bartender/server was either overwhelmed by the amount of people or she's just not good at customer service. I don't understand why people get into customer service if they hate smiling and having a polite demeanor about themselves. The last place i want to go, is where i have to sit at a bar and deal with some bartender who's having a bad day, week or month. Fyi bartenders/servers....you're tipped on how good your customer service is. Just saying..... A bartender that is not that busy on a Friday night with the one group of customers filtering out, should not question someone's drink order considering they had the garnish/ingredient. I was looking for a place in the South Bay where I could meet up with four girlfriends. We wanted somewhere off the beaten path with good food, drinks, reasonably priced and quiet enough so we could actually have a conversation. I definitely found all of this at Second Story! We made it right before 7 on a Monday and ordered happy hour drinks and appetizers. Their signature drinks are not on the happy hour menu, but wine, beer and well drinks are (around $4 for all)! There happy hour food selection is fantastic and they have a selection of appetizers, entrees and desserts at a reduced price. Here are some favorite points from the night: -the place wasn't crowded, and the music volume was appropriately low in the background. -service was attentive and great -the signature martinis are FANTASTIC. I still am thinking about the Eco-tini -the ambiance is retro chic. South Bay's own Standard Hotel! -the food is delicious!! I had the fried tofu salad. Yeah I know you're wondering how good a freaking fried tofu salad could be. GOOD!!! We also had the cheese fondu with bread and fruit dippers and the chicken bites for appetizer and they were delicious. I will definitely be back! read more

This is a place I have been meaning to get to for some time. Sat night was the first. The Belamar hotel has changed the look/feel of the previous hotel. The restaurant is no exception. On Sat night they have a happy hour that goes to 7pm, and we made it in time for the end. They even honor that in the restaurant seating area (good thing as the bar seating was pretty full) We had the hummus to start (very tasty, with pieces of pita and then squash, celery and carrots in it). For dinner we had the salmon and sirloin/picahna - both excellent. We forgot about the free bottle of wine with the entrees, but will be back again to try that. read more

Came here after searching for restaurants on yelp and I was pleasantly surprised. The pancetta wrapped pork ternderloin as succulent and I couldn't help myself from finishing everything. The blue cheese mashed potatoes were creamy but I didn't taste any blue cheese specifically. Had the meatball sliders for an appetizer and those were pretty tasty as well (three per order). The chef even sent out a complimentary appetizer - curried eggplant (among other things) on a fried pita chip. Last but not least, the banana bread dessert was warm and delicious. My friend had the steak and chocolate lava cake and enjoyed his meal as well. It's a good happy hour if you get here before 7. read more

Was rather surprises by this hidden gem in the middle of nowhere in Manhattan Beach close to the Frys. My date told me about this place so I decided to check it out on yelp - guess what free glass of wine with yelp check in - winning!! So avoided the valet and parked on the street for free - more winning!! Was promptly seated by the hostess and immediately given a menu. The place kind of had this 70s feel to it, reminded me a bit of the standard in downtown LA. Got my glass of wine - thanks yelp and luckily it was still half hour which here consists of certain dishes being 50% off. Went for the Gruyere Burger which normall would be 15 bucks but with the happy hr price - 7.50 - Winning! Also ordered the Shrimp Bisque as well. My Bisque came it was good, my date really enjoyed it, that she kept getting more of it from me. Next my Burger came, damn that burger was hella good with the gruyere cheese and chipotle ketchup, which gave it a nice taste. The other day I had gone to Unami Burger, but I must say I enjoyed this burger much more and I didnt even finish it because it was so big! My boyfriend and I came here after seeing reviews on Yelp about the nice atmosphere and food. We ate dinner here on a Tuesday night, so it wasn't busy at all, mostly hotel guests from what I could tell. We got a glass of free house wine with the Yelp check-in, I'm not a big fan of wine but I think my boyfriend liked it. I ordered the pancetta-wrapped pork tenderloin and my boyfriend ordered the New York steak, and the food took a while to arrive... which was surprising since only another table was there ordering before us. The food itself was very good, my pork tenderloin was absolutely delicious, I nearly gulfed it all down. It came with blue cheese mashed potatoes, cole slaw, some asparagus and I think caramelized apple... all very good sides. Our waitress was extremely nice, and offered us a dessert on the house at the end of the meal. I think it was to make up for a rowdy group of people that came and was drunkenly loud across from us... Anyway, we got the molten chocolate cake, and it was very good. Would definitely come here again, but gotta make sure to not be too hungry beforehand... the wait for the food and dessert (though I can't really complain about the latter since it was free) could be a problem. read more

Came here last Thursday night for a late dinner (due to traveling). We arrived in the parking area a few minutes before 10pm, to be told that the kitchen was closing in five minutes (the bar is open until midnight, but the kitchen closes at 10pm). The valet then told us to hang tight and called the kitchen for us to see if they would take our orders, and they would! Awesome start... Very nice looking restaurant with modern interior design. Seemed to be a young and hip hangout, as there were a decent amount of people there still dining, and a decent crowd around the bar (no way they were all staying at the hotel that night). You get a free glass of house wine if you check in on Yelp here. However, I just installed the Yelp app update on my cell phone and it didn't carryover my password, so after two tries, I said f'it. Our waitress was very nice, which was the most memorable part of the dinner. Nothing on the menu stuck out for me, so she made a couple of suggestions on both the entrée (marinated skirt steak wrap), cocktail (can't remember the name, but it had mint and a cucumber in it), and beer ("The Prankster"). All were pretty good, though the wrap was a very small portion for the price ($14), the cocktail was a bit girly (and I asked for "no girly" haha), but I really liked the beer. The only thing I definitely did not like was the cilantro cole slaw side, which coincidentally, was the only thing I picked out on my own ha. I should have known better and went with the fries, because I've never liked cole slaw lol. I guess I felt like pretending to be healthy that night. I left a little hungry, but it was okay because the service was good from the moment we arrived and I was so exhausted from a long day's work and traveling that I just went back to my hotel and ptfo. Overall, good restaurant, but was not impressed with the food; there are better restaurants in this price range (cocktail was $12, beer $6). I came to this place cause I was in the area and it was previously listed on DineLA before. I definitely wanted to give this place a try... As you come in, the parking is valet only. The valet attendants were very friendly and helpful. The restaurant is located literally on the second floor of the hotel. The decor is definitely very contemporary when you walk in and the crowd is definitely an older audience of 30-40 something year-olds. Upon arrival, the servers greeted us and walked us to the table. Our waiter was very attentive and sweet! She gave out great recommendations on the dishes and gave us a sample of the meatball appetizer. And the best part about the menu is the happy hour from 4-7pm! Everything marked with a wine glass image next to it (appetizers, entrees, etc.) was half off! Definitely worth it! Although I actually ordered something that wasn't on the happy hour menu. I got the halibut with risotto based on the waiter's recommendation and I thought it was good. The risotto was cooked just right (slightly al dente) and the fish was cooked perfectly (not overcooked/dry in any way). At the bottom of the risotto was red beets and some other vegetable that I couldn't quite put my finger on. After dinner, I ordered the molten lava cake desert. It was definitely very rich in chocolate and heavy. My only con was that I wished they would put more vanilla ice cream on the cake because the chocolate was getting overwhelmingly sweet. Was near Manhattan Beach and had to try this place. It is in the Belamar hotel and valet parking is required unless you park across the street in Manhattan Village Mall but that is a good walk. We checked in with yelp and my wife was given a free glass of house wine. Score! Happy hour is a great time to go because many items on the menu plus most drinks are half price. We started with the buffalo wings appetizer. It is boneless and they serve it with Gorgonzola cheese. My wife is not a big big buffalo wing fan and found it to be a little vinegary but she ate a few. I thought they crunched nicely and were good. Our waitress was very attentive and really helped with the selections. I chose the organic fire grilled chicken and the wife had the fish and chips. Her fish and chips came with a mustardy sauce so she asked for tartar and they made it fresh for her. The fish was battered tempura stylr and was very light and tasty. The shoe string chips were crunchy and abundant. Overall a decent choice. My chicken was really good. It was flame grilled and served over sliced potatoes, shrimp and artichokes in a creamy wine mushroom sauce. I really enjoyed the chicken. For dessert we shared the molten lava chocolate cake. It was served warm with a small scoop of ice cream. The waitress warned us it was super rich and it was. The first thing to note is that there were only four other tables seated when we walked in to meet our friends. Four tables? They even took a few seconds to look up our reservation. Why even bother when there are plenty of tables available? There are reasons to be hopeful but over all it did not come together. It is a hotel restaurant, plain and simple. The Hotel Belamar may have been renovated but it is not somewhere I would likely suggest someone book. It is hard to get amped about a hotel on the corner or Rosecrans and Sepulveda. Our waiter was very eager, but only because he was probably bored to tears. We could have been his only table all night. To add to the absurdity there was various dishes unavailable. Skirt steak, tamales, and gelato were all listed but unavailable. We started out with the lobster spring rolls (soggy) and mini steak tacos (little flavor according to hubby). Our dinner entrees were filet (good), turkey wrap (bland - they should add bacon), pasta with braised short ribs (only the ribs were worth eating), and the pork tenderloin. We rounded out the dinner with the fondue (delicious dark chocolate with various sweets). The most annoying part is that we have not seen our friends in a year and the waiter kept circling our table to get the signed bill (seriously - just take it). Great place! A bit hard to get to (if you've never been there before) but the hotel it's located in is pretty sweet (from what we saw). Happy hour is a blast and I enjoyed the food we got! If you check in on yelp, you should be able to get a free house wine which was pretty dang awesome. I'd recommend this place if you want a nice dinner and drink. Dress however, so many people dressed casually! This is the hotel bar. They have generic Hotel food, lousy cocktails- but it's a nice place and the servers are doing a great job. It does however feel like a hotel bar from the late 90s, so if you are a big party looking to go out- I would suggest you go elsewhere. Went there because of the great yelp rating, but got a little disappointed. Nice for a couple of drinks, but not a place I would frequent. Second Story benefits from our low expectations, but is there any harm in that? On a night when other trendy Manhattan Beach restaurants could only accommodate reservations for early-birds and night-owls, we walked into Second Story at 7pm and had our choice of ten tables. Trendy? No. Easy-peasy? Yes. Dishes are conservative with a modern sensibility, and their true strength is in the execution. Everything we had was seasoned and finished to perfection. I've been back twice since my last review! It's been just as delicious, but also prompt, not too cold, and I believe they got rid of the square spoons (or at least, I didn't have a problem with them). The happy hour is insane. Great prices for their great food. By all means, go. read more

We've eaten dinner and appetizers here several times and have loved the food. Recently we tried the Sunday brunch and let me tell you, The new brunch menu is awesome!!! Everyone loved their meals, especially the chicken and waffles and huevos rancheros! Nothing was disappointing! Also, bottomless mimosas and sangria (highly recommend the sangria!). I'll be laconic (a good word I just learned), if your looking for a decent restaurant near LAX come here! Its is a nice surprise. Casual, cool ambiance, feels local but friendly atmosphere. It's lively for a hotel restaurant and the food is really interesting - my filet was great! Perfectly cooked. The gorgonzola topping was awesome and the risotto nice. The $5 lobster tasted good (even though it's the size of a jumbo shrimp... er prawn) I don't recommend the spinach salad - too much tang in the dressing. Give it a try! read more

The food was very good but eating dinner during happy hour was rather noisy. We came at 5 PM.
