My first review of 2020 is for See Through Chinese restaurant that we ordered from a few weeks ago. My daughter brought me Chinese while I'm recovering from hip surgery, and we have been on an ongoing quest to find good Chinese food in our Corner Chicago for quite a while. Well folks, I'm still going to be searching. It's not that there is anything really wrong with this restaurant, it's just that it wasn't that good. Food delivery time was less than they quoted us, but the quote was for 90 minutes on a Thursday night. The crab rangoons were bigger than what you usually get, but they didn't have any bigger flavor to them. The Mushu chicken tasted like the chicken was leftover from a few days ago, but veggies were pretty good. And to my daughter's pineapple chicken tasted just like everybody else's pineapple chicken, super sweet and full of breading. I'm a little intrigued by the See Thru Kitchen description, but we've got in the habit of always eating Chinese at home for some reason. Might never see that See Thru Kitchen. Anyway this might be our best go to option until we find a good quality Chinese experience around us. read more

This is my standard, go-to, divey, pretty alright cheap Chinese takeout place. They give you a ton of food - it's not the best, but certainly not the worst. I keep coming back when I want something cheap and comforting. I'm not a fan of the egg rolls but their Hunan Shrimp, chicken fried rice, and General Tso's chicken are all pretty good. In the past I've found gems inside of dumps, so I keep looking and looking, hoping to find more... gems. I didn't find one here. When I had the take-out in the car on the ride home, there was a smell of sweet emanating from something. It's reminiscent of Chinese-buffet-grade sweet and sour sauce.(Or maybe it's cheap Hoisin?) That smell is not appetizing to me and I instantly thought, "this shit ain't gonna be good." Suffice it to say, it wasn't. I felt bloated and cheated afterwards. If I was a starving student, I still wouldn't eat here. Rather, I'd run over to Jewel and buy a salad. Chinese take-out spot in a tiny strip mall next to a fast food joint. The inside is dirty and with a name like "see thru Chinese Kitchen", there isn't much to see goin' on in that damn kitchen. If you're a big chinese fiend like I am, you'll probably notice that more and more places are trying to implement the whole 7.00 for lunch/dinner special with egg roll and a free pop. I have tried several places and 0 can top this place. Their 7.00 special is literally all day from lunch-dinner where most places end at lunch, I find. Their chicken fried rice is the best I've ever had and their egg roll is so good. You won't be disappointed. I recommend the sweet and sour chicken or empress chicken. My roommates and I love this place, because it's a great option for when we are low on cash but don't want to/don't have time to cook. The Chinese food isn't fabulous (ok, well the crab rangoons are, fo real), but it's good. And the most important thing is, it's like, half the price of wok cuisine and other places nearby. Shrimp Toast $4.35 - 8 pieces of shrimp toast, but the shrimp toast is cut into diagonally triangles so is more like half the size of regular shrimp toast but there are 8 pieces to compensate. Tastes like condensed milk or coconut butter under the ground shrimp so it's a tasty treat! General Tso's Chicken special $5.25 - Blech! 2 stars the breading is very poor and it doesn't taste right. Shrimp fried rice has big pieces of shrimp in it but the rice is a bit overcooked. This chicken is not very good! :( Overall speedy delivery and reasonable pricing. Ugh! What a MAJOR disappointment! we ordered delivery from this place. They did get it here fast but that is where the good ended and the terror began. I ordered a fried shrimp/crab rangoon combo which came with shrimp fried rice. I did not receive shrimp fried rice I received pork fried rice and it was way too greasy and clumpy and was not that good. The fried shrimp was more of a shrimp flavored ball of dough. the crab rangoons were slightly over done. Our cans of soda expired early this year! I will give them credit. The wonton soup was good and fully loaded. i wold have to say that it was more loaded with wontons than any other soup that I have had. The wonton soup and the fast delivery could not make up for all of the other issues that we had with our dinner. I am hoping that these guys just had a bad day. I stopped by here to pick up some Chinese fast food. I ordered crab rangoon and Mongolian beef. The beef was pretty good, and I'm glad it didn't have the usual deep-fried rice noodles underneath (most places give you stale noodles, anyway). It did have some mushrooms and baby corn in it, which was fine. The crab rangoon were ok. The filling was a bit sweet, but not bad overall. When I got home, I noticed that they gave me a free egg roll, which was a nice surprise. Overall, See Thru is your basic Chinese fast-food restaurant. It's cheap, fast, and the food was ok. They have lunch and dinner specials, which I'll probably try next time. 1/9: I'm a sucker for bad Chinese food sometimes. The dinner included chicken wings, egg rolls, crab rangoon, wonton soup, sweet and sour chicken, fried rice, and beef kow. The fried rice and beef kow were both very good. Good flavors and you can tell it was freshly cooked. The fried items were probably in old grease or fried too long. The egg rolls and the sweet and sour chicken had a greasy, oily flavor. One thing stood out - the chicken wing. It was very juicy and flavorful. My fiance, however, was not a fan and said it was not his thing. read more

3 star cuisine with 5 star service. This has been our go-to for delivery and takeout for the year we've lived in the neighborhood. The food is nothing special, nothing you couldn't get at any other Chinese take-out place. But the service is super fast, the food is always hot, and they frequently throw in freebies like extra egg rolls and fried rice, even when we don't order the amount GrubHub says you have to in order to get a free fried rice or sweet and sour chicken. It took a few orders, but we figured out what we liked and what we didn't and haven't messed with it since then. Like I said, the food is always hot when it gets here (usually about 20 minutes earlier than GrubHub says they will). The chicken dishes we've gotten are all decent and they really pack it into those containers. Don't get larges unless you want leftovers. Sesame chicken is my favorite from them. The sweet and sour is always overflowing with crispy chicken and the sauce, which comes in a separate container so the chicken stays crispy, is way more sweet than sour, but bf really likes it. We've also enjoyed their egg rolls, lo mein, orange chicken, and wonton soup. The almond cookies are hit and miss, sometimes they have a weird taste and other times they're delicious and soft. I'd never had a soft almond cookie from a Chinese place before See Thru. I steer clear of their beef and pork dishes. The mongolian beef in particular is really disappointing. It doesn't taste anything like what I know mongolian beef to be and the container is at least 50% filled with onions. Ah well. We're moving soon, and we'll definitely miss See Thru. Even if we find a place that has good mongolian beef. If you're more of a chicken person than a beef or pork person, I recommend it. read more

They didn't scrimp on meat/veggies, didn't use MSG, or use too much corn starch in their sauces like other chinese delivery restaurants. The fried rice was pretty good, but General Tso's chicken left something to be desired. The breading was terrible, and the flavor was so-so. It did not, however, taste like any other General Tso I've had before. The crab rangoon was decent and they were pretty big. We also ordered beef lo mein. The noodles were great ; I mean, how can one really mess that up? The beef, though the pieces were large, was especially chewy. Strike three. This place has been my go-to Chinese takeout joint for years. Their delivery is always super fast (one time they arrived in less than 25 minutes!), the food is consistently yummy, and it's very inexpensive! Perfect for those nights when you don't feel like cooking or are too lazy to leave the house! I don't know if it's super authentic Chinese or not (I'm guessing not), but I am always happy with their food. If you are looking for high end Chinese food, this place probably isn't for you. I've been a fan of Mayflower nearby, but when a co-worker offered to buy carry-out from this place in return for a favor, I wanted to try it. My benchmark dish for a Chinese place has always been General Tso's chicken, so that is what I ordered. I arrived to pick up the order, which was ready right on time. This is primarily a carry-out business, squeezed into a corner of the strip mall across from Aldi on Pulaski. A few day laborers standing around looked on. I think they saw my bag of food and got a whiff of it. I brought it in and opened it up. I have to admit this place does not skimp. The entire clamshell container was packed to the top with chicken and fried rice. The chicken... it was OK. They say it is hot and spicy on the menu, but to me it was barely distinguishable from orange chicken, perhaps a bit soggy. They did not pass my General Tso chicken test. I added hot pepper flakes to enhance the meal, something I would not need to do at Mayflower. However, their fried rice was better than I've had anywhere in a long time. Little bits of chicken mixed in throughout gave it excellent flavor too. Egg roll was decent, but not superb. I ate about one-third of the package before I was full. In the end, I had 2 more leftover meals from that package. For the money, it's a great value and it was crisper when I reheated it in my broiler. To sum it up, See Thru is an OK place. I was not disappointed either. I'd be willing to try more dishes to get the bigger picture. But for now, Mayflower remains my preferred Chinese joint in the area. read more

It's the 3rd Asian resturaunt / delivery I've gotten food from and no one seems to know what Kung Pap chicken is or how to make it. Dinner or special extra super Kung pao w/too many vegetables and more rice than a small country can handle is unreal oh and a super lack of chicken. Best of all none of these places seem to know what Kung pap sauce is. Now even if this is trad preparation it isn't the Kung pao I know and love. So...I lose my appetite once I go in to observe the kitchen as im paying for my food. But I go home and eat my Mongolian beef special and I think to myself.... Just wow. But in my opinion the best you're going to find in the area. It always arrives hot, which is impressive considering how far away I live, and the driver is always fast and courteous.
