Luis was very helpful, providing his recommendations as well as background and recipe info. Wine list is simple and reasonably priced, and well suited to the menu. We were planning on seafood, so everyone was happy with a Fume Blanc. The gumbo is fresh, carries some heat, and did not disappoint. I recently went to Brennans of Houston one Sunday ago, with my kids. After buying a starter plate for my son, we realized that my son who has a peanut allergy was reacting to something that looks like a small pecan, that was not noticed by me or my son who is always on an alert about peanut. After I told the waiter who called the manager right away. The way the team reacted to make sure my son was okay, was amazing. The manager was very concerned, brought us some Benadryl right away. Came here for date night, it was quaint the ambiance was basic. Staff could have been friendlier but the food makes up for anything else. We had the sauteed shrimp and crab along with the shrimp and crab salad, it was amazing! The seafood was fresh and they really pile it on your plate so you could never say they don't give you enough. Friend suggested this restaurant. We went on a Tuesday around 7:30 pm. Only 1 other table occupied. The decor was plain there was nothing exciting about it. So the prices did not make up for the decor. As stated by others on this site menu had no prices, you would hope they would be reasonable as the place was no big deal. But come on $33 for a filet Mignon? The salad dressing seemed like it came right out of the bottle - nothing spectacular nothing fancy. They didn't even have a dessert that the that the waiter rattled off, so we had to get a substitute of brownie a la mode which was nothing compared to what you might get a Chili's or Applebee's, luckily it was free. I would not recommend this place at all - the food was overpriced the waiters were just so so and decor was just average. My guess is that they overcharged due to the lack of attendance at the restaurant. Do yourself a favor keep your money in your pocket and go down the street to Saltgrass because you might get a better deal there, and the bread won't seem like it came out of a packaged product from the grocery store. Segari's is just the best. Can't say enough good things. The food is always fresh and delicious. The atmosphere is cozy and comfortable. Angela Segari is always there keeping an eye on things and tending to the many new and regular customers. While every dish I've tried has been great (and I've tried quite a few), the Signature Seafood Platter is absolutely incredible. It's more of an event, than a meal. Incredible little joint that has somehow escaped the teeming crowds of hungry Houstonians for decades. This is THE place to go for crab during the season. It's perfect and small and everything you'd ever want in a seafood spot. I've never had anything bad here. The lamb chops are great, the fried food is out of this world good (the fried oysters, in particular, will bring you back). But the star is the crab cocktail. Simple ingredients, served chilled in a martini glass. The best. The owner (took over for her dad years ago) is also really pleasant and knowledgable. She will bend over backwards to make your night easy and comfortable. The ambiance is dark but not creepy. A good spot to get boozed up over seafood caught that morning. A+ all around. read more

There are no prices on the menu which only means one thing...You should not care how much it costs because it's going to be good. This place is a hidden treasure. The seafood is fresh and always excellent. Each time I have been here I have the crab claws and they are huge and plentiful. The space is so cozy and reminds me of old Houston. It is in a vintage house with bars on the windows reminding all you hipsters what the Shepherd/Durham/Washington neighborhood used to be like before the renaissance. Pre smoking ordinance, I would bet this place was filled with a haze of cigarette and cigar smoke. You can imagine the "deals" that were made here over drinks and lunch or dinner. read more

Came here for my wife's birthday. Bartender who does double duty as a waitress cannot elaborate the items on the menu. It's unfortunate as we like to find smaller restaurants to meet up with friends for celebrations however we will not return to this one. We meet a couple in the parking lot about to go in and informed them of the terrible service and told them that Backstreet Cafe was a much better choice, they decided to leave. Visited one of my favorites last night, Segari's, and as always the food, drinks, atmosphere, and service were all top-shelf. Had a couple of cocktails from a very well stocked bar, then a cup of their signature seafood gumbo(some of the best anywhere), followed by the rack of lamb w/mint jelly, which was cooked to perfection. Angela Segari, owner, keeps a very nice selection of wine by the glass or bottle, large liquor selecion, a varied menu which specializes in seafood dishes. We were seated within two feet of the only other table. The service was seriously lacking and even the crabmeat cocktail that we'd heard such good things about was lackluster. I have eaten here several times over the years. It's a very small, family run restaurant that has been around for at least 20 years. The menu is gulf seafood focused but they have steaks and chicken and the likes. There are less than 20 tables and the restaurant is quiet and the atmosphere friendly. The service is always good. The food is usually very good, but sometimes the fish gets over cooked. Just ask them to make sure not to over cook the fish and they always get it right for my tastes. My only real complaint is that they do not put prices on the menu and the food can be expensive. Expect $30-40 per person without cocktails and it's not hard at all to spend $75 to $100 per person with cocktails, appetizers and dessert. read more

Segaris is located in a small, nondescript house on the Durham side of Maxie Street. There's no big sign - just a small yellow sign barking that parking is for "Segaris only" and a more formal, though equally small, placard outside the door declaring rather meekly: "Segaris." With a slight tongue in cheek modesty, the back of the menu relates the history of the self-proclaimed institute of Sam Segaris and his various bars and restaurants. The current incantation is a rebuild of the previous location which burned down in 2003. The absence of a sign is explained with great pride as a result of old man Segaris refusing to pay for another permit when the City of Houston refused to transfer the permit for the old location which burned down just before the sign could be built. So how did I come to Segaris? It certainly wasn't the signage. It also wasn't the location or the exterior of the building. Indeed, I have driven by the location a number of times and thought of it as perhaps some local bar or hole in the wall. It was not advertising or an eye grabbing notice - instead, it was a single instance of word of mouth: "You've NEVER been to Segaris? Oh man, they have GREAT seafood. It's an INSTITUTION. Make a reservation! Pack a wallet, it's not cheap - the prices aren't even on the menu!" It sounded too good to be true: a well kept secret, individually owned, great food, and a one of a kind of experience - it was: too good to be true, that is. Segaris claims itself a seafood kitchen. The additional entrees of lamb, steak, chicken, and veal appear to be stand by staples as opposed to house specialties. The laundry list of seafood appetizers, soups, salads and entrees makes it clear: stick to the seafood, you landlubber! And so we did. I had their self-proclaimed "famous" seafood and sausage gumbo, the grilled red fish, topped with shrimp and crab meat, and the included side of my choice (rosemary potatoes, fries, mixed medley: onions, asparagus, sausage, tomatoes, and mushrooms, or a few other choices). I chose the mix medley. Service was prompt and friendly. I had anticipated (based upon the word of mouth) a more formal setting. I wore a suit from work and had my tie in the car just in case. It became apparent as I pulled in to the "we'll need repavin' in 2-3 years" parking lot that a tie would not be necessary. This was underscored by the purple neon lining the edge of the roof and the rainbow of odd shaped colors falling on the hood of my car, cast by the stained glass window of a chubby, bearded chef carrying a dish. While no one was sporting a wife beater and jorts (jean shorts for the culturally illiterate), flannels and mom jeans abounded. The building itself sits atop typical Heights piers and beam construction. I could feel the hollowness below the floors as I walked. Hit with the fried seafood smell floating out of the kitchen, I was reminded of the small well-to-do seafood restaurants scattered across the Texas coast in towns such as Surf Side. The entry way is stubbornly ADA compliant, forcing all who enter to traverse the zig zag ramp. For those who care to smoke, you will find yourself in good company with the patrons, wait staff, and manger, all of whom take turns on a small porch overlooking beautiful, war torn Durham. The decor is an odd mix of "old fart" and modern. The "God I wish I had six in my party so I could sit there" booth that occupies the focal point of the dining room is smartly surrounded in leather panels, as is the ceiling. The bar is nothing to write home about and the rest of the restaurant is decorated in mismatching artwork and clever little drawings from the 30s and 40s (this theme is echoed in the men's room as well). The dining room is small and while we had no problem getting in at 7:30 P.M. on a Monday, it did actually kind of, sort of, well...fill up. There are tops ranging from 2 - 6, with most tops accommodating 4-5. Other than an early Monday or Tuesday, I would make a reservation. I could see this place being a packed blast Wednesday through Saturday. So what about the food?! The "famous" gumbo was so so. I was expecting much more. The flavor was right, but it tasted like it had been simmering, waiting for me, or anyone else to order it for hours. The shrimp appears to have been added long before it was served to me. That subtle decision is the difference between holding back the service of the bowl two minutes while the shrimp cooks in the heat of the gumbo, arriving moist, and serving me immediately with stringy, overcooked shrimp. The fish was only slightly better - reminding me of an amateur job well done at home, but not the gourmet subtlety I would expect from an institution. Two words came to mind as I finished my meal "Kingfish Market." The chef must smoke as well. Dinner for 2 with a bottle of wine: $130 with a $22 tip. Wow - Yelp cut me off! read more

I had a thoroughly enjoyable experience at Segari this past Saturday night. My fiancée and I pass this place often on our way home from a near by club and always said we would stop in one day. Mainly because I love seafood and it's been there since 1971 so we always feel that's a good sign. We were gladly proven right! The small house has a max occupancy of 32 people which gives it a nice intimate ambiance. There aren't any TV's to distract you from your company. The food was delicious! I had fresh lump crab and shrimp over a vegetable medley and my fiancé had the savory ribeye with roasted potatoes. We loved it! The bartender was very nice and knowledgeable and made us some very tasty after dinner drinks! My fiancé always says if it doesn't need a1 then it's a great steak, and he didn't use any steak sauce last night! We will be back! read more

I like the concept of this place and hope they do well. I think Segari's has a lot of potential. The service was really good even though there was only one server and he got five tables all at the same time. I was with a friend and we ordered a couple of steaks. My steak, which was ordered with a desired temperature of medium, came out extremely overcooked. I asked for a new one and that one came out rare at first -- which they did correct when I sent it back. I ended up with a steak which was cooked how I wanted but it seemed like the meat wasn't very well marbled and lacked any decent flavor. Considering this is supposed to be a steakhouse, the cooks didn't appear very experienced. I don't mind paying for good food but this didn't meet my expectations. My friends steak came out cooked correctly the first time but he agreed the overall flavor was pretty poor. I won't be back. read more

What an unexpected find! I had a bowl of gumbo to start which was delicious! For dinner I had the Ribeye and the flavor was great. The only thing that they could improve on is making homemade salad dressing. It is straight from the bottle. I judge a restaurant based on their salad. I have worked at (four Seasons) and frequented many fine restaurants and there is something about this quaint restaurant that places it above all the rest. Just had dinner there. Filet Mignon had lots of fat on it, not properly trimmed. The French fries were terrible, some cut thick, some cut thin, hence some are overcooked and others still raw. Waitress friendly and appologetic after I gave them "friendly" feedback, but still charges you full price. Way too much money for the mediocre quality you get. A good place to stay away from. Went to Segari's for a special dinner last weekend and I had to write a review because my experience was amazing. First off, there IS a sign on the front and you can't miss it. So if the whole "I may not be able to even find it!" thing was scaring you away don't worry about it. Still, this does not take away from the hidden charm of Segari's. There are still only about 10 tables in the whole place and no prices on the menu. I ordered a cup of gumbo which was delicious as well as the crab stuffed bacon wrapped shrimp with the veggie medley side. Now, I love bacon and shrimp, but have always been underwhelmed when having bacon wrapped shrimp, but not this time. This dish was perfect and I would order it every single time. My girlfriend had the Crabcakes with Wasabi TarTar and they were also very good. Now the reason I wanted to write a review: the service. The service was outstanding. Firstly, the two servers working that night were very friendly and made nice conversation. Also, our server apparently held on to our order a bit long and it took a while for it to come out. We were having a great time just relaxing and enjoying the ambiance, so we did not mind. However, our server apologized profusely AND comped us a round of drinks as well as an order of boudin, which, to be honest, I didn't even see on the menu. The boudin was delicious and it was a very nice gesture for him to come out and give it to us on the house, along with a couple free drinks. I would highly recommend this restaurant because of the very good food and good service to match. read more

We stumbled on Segari's last night thanks to a colleague's recommendation. A few observations: Parking was a little odd, in that we paid $5 across the street to someone my wife was convinced was skamming us. Turns out he wasn't. Still, it felt a little sketchy. The restaurant itself is very small, which we liked, but it's far from ideal for someone wanting a lively scene. The bar and dining area is basically just one room. The staff were awesome. I'd rate them the highest, even compared to the food. The menus didn't have prices, which I don't really understand. Isn't that relevant? It just seems either affected or annoying, but either way, I can't see any benefit to not listing prices. As for the food, the gumbo was great. We had the signature platter, which was just okay. While they certainly don't skimp on serving crab, it didn't have tons of taste. The bread pudding for dessert was quite good, too. All in, I suspect that one should stick with gumbo, something with spice for an entree, and I bet that all of the desserts are good. read more

We never made it to a table. My girlfriend and I were going to meet there for an early dinner. I walked in the door and the bartender was having a pointed conversation with someone on the phone. I stood there for a couple of minutes. She told the person on the phone that she had to go and she looked up at me like I had interrupted a long afternoon nap. I said can you accommodate two for dinner, and she pointed to a table over by the bathroom. I asked her if we could have a table in the middle of the room. She rolled her eyes and said you can sit wherever you want. I said I think I will. I walked outside and sat in my car and drove over to the spaghetti Western and had some great Italian food. Met someone for a business lunch here and boy am I glad I did. It's a small place and it's a hidden gem. The owner was there and was extremely attentive to us. The food was all incredible... I started with the gumbo, and it was so meaty and spicey and delicious! Then I had the crab & shrimp salad, and boy was the seafood fresh!!! By the way, it also came with this delicious blue cheese dressing that is obviously homemade and not the creamy variety that i'm used to, but olive oil based with chuncks on blue cheese. It was heaven. Though I usually try to pass on dessert, my lunch partners who are regulars insisted, and I had the bread pudding, it was perfect. I can't wait to come back here. Went for the seafood and wasn't disappointed. The gumbo was really, really good and I'd go back for another bowl once a week if I lived in Houston. We shared a bread pudding and it was a fight for the last bite. Real french bread as the base - not bisquik! Our only complaint was the lack of attention by the wait staff. Two staff and only 6 tables that night, but we had to catch their attention just to get a refill on water. This is considered a $$$ restaurant and the bill certainly exceeded expectations.
