Service and food were amazing. Server provided a complementary wine since I wasn't familiar with one of her recommendations which I found thoughtful. They even provided a complimentary anniversary dessert. It's very dimly lit inside, which I found misleading base off pictures. I thought there would be more lighting. Value to food ratio isn't that great. Sure prefixe menu, but to charge us for still water with no option for free "tap" water is outrageous. Starter: Early Girl Tomato Gazpacho - 10/10 - Creamy cold tomato soup, balanced flavors and spices Entree: Pilates Filet - 7/10 - Medium, flavor melts in mouth, but a little dry on the edges, demi-sec tomato almost taste like a strawberry which balances the saltiness of the meat Dessert: Anniversary raspberry ice cream - 7/10 - Personally don't like chocolate, but the ice cream was good. I wanted to love our experience here, and to be fair, the food was genuinely good. However, the value just isn't there, and the ordering process left us feeling incredibly frustrated. The menu layout is quite misleading, and unfortunately, our server did not explain it clearly. Because of the lack of communication, we wound up with two Spring Prix-Fixe orders on our check that we never intended to buy, alongside the individual entrées we thought we were ordering. Besides the bread, they start you off with deviled eggs and potato mille-feuille--nice touch! The pea ravioli was pretty standard, and the raw tuna felt heavy with sesame oil, making it a bit greasy. The main dishes like duck breast and steak were good, though the portions were small and more about finesse. The desserts, a huge chocolate cake and profiteroles, had some character! They even threw in a little anniversary cake after, which was sweet. Service here is good but it took awhile to order initially and to get refills on water since it is hard to find someone in the hall so make sure to ask when they are in your room. Took my mom here for Mother's Day. Everything was okay, but I felt not worth the price for a Michelin star restaurant. Total for two people including tip was $400 for just dinner without any drinks. This includes mandatory 6% San Mateo fee, which I'm not sure what it is for. For appetizers we got the burrata and green peas and the duck agnolotti. The burrata was good, and the the creaminess was offset by bright acidity and textural crunch. The agnolotti had good flavor but I didn't taste any duck. For mains, my duck was undercooked and the lobster was a tiny portion even though it was $35 supplement. The passion fruit tart was a nice dessert, but the chocolate cake tasted like it came from a box. They do offer complimentary valet, which is nice. read more

We came for dinner in the bar/lounge area for their a la carte menu. We got lucky and found parking in the neighborhood, it was our first time but they let us know valet is free for the future! We got there shortly after opening so were able to snag a table for 2 instead of sitting at the bar itself. Our waiter was beyond amazing!! So friendly and great recommendations all night. Everything we ordered was delicious! We got the tuna tar tar and mussels to start. And then the burger and steak for our mains. Loved everything but the sauce for the mussels was especially delicious. And the steak was so perfectly cooked and seasoned. The herb butter on top really paired well! My wife and I came here back in early January to celebrate our last nice meal before our baby arrived, and boy was it memorable. We made sure to tell our server that my wife was pregnant (she was 36 weeks at that point), and that was hopefully enough to make sure that they were going to pass that along to the kitchen to make sure things were thoroughly cooked. She had the persimmon salad, lobster, and chocolate cake. For what it's worth, what I had was quite excellent, but my wife ended up choosing the wrong items. As we were eating the lobster, she felt like it may have been slightly undercooked, but trusted that the kitchen did their due diligence. By the time we arrived at home, she immediately started to feel sick and suffer from food poisoning. We ended up going to the ER twice after that meal, once in the middle of the night after that meal, and later that same day because her food poisoning was that extensive. Selby's is a fantastic high end restaurant known for their preset fixed menu. Located on El Camino Real, Selby's offers a great date night vibe with its grand bar area, mood lighting, and intimate ambiance. The restaurant offers complimentary valet parking in the back. Selby's ask their patrons not to park in the residential streets in respect for the residents there. We arrived 15 minutes before opening on a Tuesday and were really surprised there was a long line of walk ins. We managed to grab the last two seats at the bar. The bar was well lit, stocked with comfy chairs, with a beautiful view of the wide range of alcohol bottles on display. My only gripe is that the bar table is curved down so the only useable part is a bit far from your body so it might be difficult or uncomfortable for customers with short arms. I don't really have short arms but I found the table slightly uncomfortable to eat at. The bar/lounge allows you to order from the both the bar menu and the dinner menu. The drink menu is also quite extensive as well. Truffle popcorn- This was a complimentary snack offered at the bar and it was so so delicious. I think I could just order this for dinner and be perfectly content. The popcorn was buttery, well salted, and with a strong truffle finish. Yellowfin tuna tartare- This is a healthy, light, refreshing appetizer to start your meal. The tuna is lightly seasoned in vinaigrette with a taste reminiscent of salsa. The in house made chips pair nicely adding a bit of texture. Like a lot of other reviewers mentioned, the dish itself is a little bland and feels like its missing more intriguing flavors. Saltspring Island Mussels- Mussels were good but missing more broth. They give you two pieces of bread but barely enough liquid to dip. The broth itself is delicious, aromatic, creamy, and slightly spicy but I just wish there was more of it. The mussels don't seem to be soaked long enough in the sauce to grab onto any flavor. Selby's burger- This burger was so unique and probably the highest in value when compared to the rest of the menu. For $27 you get a fat juicy burger that comes out piping hot. The seeded bun is fluffy and outstanding. The two beef patties are on the pink side, so if you prefer a more cooked patty, let your serve know. The fontina cheese is melty and adds such a unique cheesy taste you don't find in everyday burgers. The sauce itself is slightly spicy, mustardy, but complements the meat so well. Every bite was so memorable. The fresh fries are also a noteworthy part of the meal. The fries were crispy and served with the garlicky of garlic aiolis. I have never had such a strong garlic sauce paired with fries. It was absolutely delicious through and through. Service was beyond impressive. We didn't expect much warmth and personality from a high end restaurant but we were pleasantly surprised. The bartender took care of us the entire night. She was warm, friendly, personable, and down to earth. She made our experience memorable making small chit chat- nothing artificial or forced. Selby's is a great option if you're looking to spend your Chase Sapphire reserve credit. 2 selby burgers, 1 mussel, and 1 tuna tartare will add up to $150 and feed two people handsomely. Apps were great, mains were meh, service was uncomfortable I was very confused whether it was a tasting menu, an order from each category menu, etc. My server did not explain the menu to me and when I asked for clarification, he would say 'you can have whatever you want', which really wasn't helpful. The server added a tuna tartare on the house, which seemed like a nice gesture. However, things took a turn when he asked me whether I wanted to get a drink at the bar after. Then he was comp-ing my glass of wine. Then the next time he checked on my table, he was asking me to go to another establishment later that evening. I thought that this was extremely inappropriate and put me in a very uncomfortable position - Complementary appetizers and bread were some of the highlights. I wish I could just get a basket of truffle cream puffs, and popovers, yum! 5/5 - Chestnut veloute: Smooth and delicate, lovely. 5/5 - Tuna tartare: Fish was fresh, homemade chips were a nice touch, but the ratio of potato chips was disproportionate to the tartare. 4/5 - Duck breast with celeriac mille feuille: Duck was juicy and tender. Mille feuille felt soggy and uninspiring. Together with the puree quenelle, I wish there was a crunchy element on the plate. 2.5/5 - Pacific cod: This plate felt very out of place. The amount of lentils was substantial. Combined with the way it was plated, this dish felt heavy and lacked the type of presentation finesse. All the flavors were good though. Woof. We came here last night to celebrate my dad's birthday and were excited to dine at a Michelin star restaurant in the South Bay. I'd say our experience was pretty mediocre from start to end. When we arrived, we were just told to wait on the side which is fine but after finding our reservation, in which we specified we were celebrating a birthday, there was no mention of it. We heard others being greeted for their celebratory occasions so that was a little sad but not a big deal. Once we were seated it took about 10 minutes for our waiter to come and explain the specials to us and get our drink orders. After that, it probably took about 40-45 minutes to get our food so we were starving. The amuse bouche, popover and appetizers (persimmon and chicory salad, endive and pear salad and agnolotti) were all good, but 2/3 of the entrees were a let down. The steak was very good and tender, well seasoned and had a good sear on it. The duck was okay, not as big of a portion as the steak or as flavorful. The fish was a definite no for us, not just because it smelled very fishy (which fresh fish should not), but the flavors just did not vibe and the biggest issue was that we very clearly specified a mushroom allergy when placing our order and the plate had mushrooms all over it when it came out. I totally get it's a fixed menu and most of the dishes had mushrooms and we said it's ok to just leave them out without subbing anything else in, but it was really frustrating to have waited so long to get the food only to see the one thing we requested be omitted all over it. The waiter was very apologetic and offered to have it remade, but at that point we were so hungry we just ate around it and shared plates. Luckily it's only a mild allergy, but if this was a serious case and a diner did not identify the mushrooms immediately (not everyone recognizes chanterelles), it could have been disastrous. After that, our waiter kept checking on us up until the point where we needed our check. That took another 25 minutes and we were just awkwardly sitting around waiting as we had already been there for almost 2.5 hours. Desserts were fine, nothing to write home about but I did really enjoy the thyme ice cream-really a unique taste that was very refreshing. This note isn't against the establishment nor factored into my rating, but it was also pretty off putting to see so many diners in baggy jeans/sweatshirts/hats. It's one thing to be smart casual or wear a nice shirt and jeans, but hoodies and baseball caps really cheapen the place and honestly just make you look snobby in the most tone deaf way. I get some people want to flaunt that this kind of place is an everyday dining experience for them, but have some respect for the chef and establishment, people. Just my two cents. Overall, glad we tried it out but probably won't be returning for this price point. For a similar menu style and experience, Gary Danko definitely satisfied us more. read more

The dim lighting was appropriate for a date, but challenging for food photos. We started with cocktails served from a bar reminiscent of the Overlook Hotel's in *The Shining*. These drinks were potent enough that we limited our orders to a couple each. Since our daughter craved caviar and they were paying, we got the Osetra service (supplement $190). This was underwhelmingly unsatisfying for me as a first-timer.. Our starters were the Leek & Potato Velouté, Yellowfin Tuna Tartare, Cresenza Ravioli and an off-menu spaghetti type pasta with 5 gms of black truffle shavings. Post apps, the bread service of popovers was settled onto our plates, which we were all eagerly anticipating from the previous experience of my daughter and son-in-law. My wife and I were unanimous in saying that the bread was overcooked. Entrees came next which includes Main Lobster Newburg ($35 supplement), Honey Lacquer Duck Breast and Beef Wellington ($25 supplement). Dessert was a smorgasbord of all four options. Passionfruit Tart, Profiterole, Midnight Chocolate Cake and Crémeux de Citeaux ($8 supplement). Now, I have an adventurous palate, however, the latter dessert was another bust. I had some CSR credits and figured I would take my folks out to a holiday dinner. If you are like me and get "parking" anxiety then as a heads up there's no obvious parking lot nearby. You will have to use their valet which is right in front of the restaurant on the El Camino side. Once you enter, you'll be asked for reservations and an option to hang your coat. We sat upstairs and the table was largely already prepared by the time we sat down with a menu of the dinner set we got. The server was super attentive and regularly came by to check and give some suggestions. I got the twice prepared hen which was recommended by the server when I asked about it. Others at the table got the Halibut and Ribeye. The apps were pretty good but more on the decorative side than flavorful. They were good but the portion could have been bigger imo. The Hen I got was really good. It had a crispy skin that reminds me of roasted pork skin and was well seasoned. I did have a slice of the ribeye and found that it was okay. For the price I was paying, the ribeye certainly didn't wow me while the Hen did. I didn't try the Halibut but was told that it was too salty and were thankful for the veggies to balance out their palette. I arranged an early dinner for my folks at around 5:45pm. We left around 7:15pm. By the time we left, it started to get packed at the reception. So, overall, if price was not considered, this was a nice dinning experience with great ambience and service; however, for $700, I'd expect everything to wow me and knock my socks off. read more

I was fortunate that they had a table for 1 available at the time, and though I was not a large party, the server and service were exceptional. The dining hall was not too loud, with patrons well spaced within. The dishes were well paced, and a few small bites included as a pleasant surprise. My favorites were certainly the bread and beef wellington, which was prepared to perfection. My server went above and beyond for the experience, and even ensured that I had cake to take home to my wife, who was not able to dine that period. As others have mentioned, while the dishes were not an exercise in novelty, they were very well made. Like in The Menu, I frankly I prefer a classic done well, than an intellectual exercise done poorly. Though we ended blowing way past our budget, for the experience I felt it was way worth it. what we ordered: Yellowfin tuna crudo w/ fresh potato chips - good but lacked some of the freshness I'd want from a crudo Duck tortellini with crispy parsnips - love me some fresh pasta but the duck was overshadowed by the beurre monte Ribeye cap "roulade" special with black truffles - so, so so delicious. I'm always a little skeptical about rolled steak but this was absolutely delicious, with the truffles provided an incredible complement to the steak. A steep complement but absolutely worth it for steak lovers. Dry aged ribeye with robuchon potatoes and creamed spinach - super flavorful and just a fantastic steak. My girlfriend liked this one more than the special, but honestly both were just solid steak dishes. Sticky toffee pudding - a creative twist on a classic dessert, i was skeptical on the crispy date topping but i ended up loving it. Midnight chocolate cake - really tasty with just the right amount of bittersweet dark chocolate. Not as overpowering as it looks. The interior is cozy classy with dim lighting, velvet and leather seating that you can settle into for the 8 course meal. Staff made me feel special wishing me happy birthday and displaying a birthday card on our table. We enjoyed the non alcoholic champagne, and zero proof cocktail to toast the night. They gave me a full vegetarian menu and the chef made accommodations for added courses. The menu was very autumnal which I appreciated, I love fall flavors! I just loved the persimmon chicory salad-- I would lick the plate clean! I was tempted to get the housemade pasta for main entree, but the waiter persuaded me to get the butternut squash risotto which was superb with layers of flavor and texture. For a birthday treat they brought me a raspberry ice cream sandwich-- an elevated surprise! I was so impressed with Selby's. This was our first time here. From the parking valet gentlemen, hostess ladies, Stanley our amazing waiter, the staff who refilled our water glasses and removed the crumbs in between our courses,... the customer service was over the top! Everything we had was amazingly good. The only thing was my filet was well done vs medium well, but that is okay. We ate everything on our plates and had no to go boxes because the portions were just right. Well, okay, I couldn't finish the chocolate cake, but 4 more spoonfuls wasn't worth putting it in a to go box. :) My husband told me Selby's has been awarded one Michelin star, which it has maintained in recent Michelin Guides as a fine-dining destination with high-quality cooking "worth a stop." I can see why!!! The ambiance felt relaxing because the lights in the main dining room weren't too bright. I loved the music that was played. It is a high end restaurant so we won't be able to go too often, but for a special occasion, we will be back. However, the bar area has à la carte menu and you can dine there without a reservation. The service is really professional and attentive. I don't understand why people would take a baby out to dinner at a place like this. The child was very fussy and annoying. Of course the restaurant had to sit the child right by us. When they were bringing out the high chair they hit my chair really hard. My stomach is still so full from Selby's! Our server Antonio was very attentive without ever being intrusive, and very knowledgeable about the menu. His recommendation for the white truffle was spot on! He really made us feel taken care of. When we finished our dinner, he let valet know, and even walked me to the bathroom when I had asked him for the directions to it. As far as the ambiance, the restaurant side has dim lighting which makes the dinner more cozy and intimate. The bar side has more lighting (and a bit louder crowd). Food was delicious across the board. Everything came out beautifully prepared and full of flavor. Definitely one of those meals where you keep saying "wow, this is really good" after every bite. Our favorite was the pacific cod entree. Both my wife and I agreed that it's best cod we've ever had - it felt like it just melted in your mouth. That's how perfectly cooked it was! Also, a quick tip for anyone planning to visit: don't bother trying to find street parking on El Camino Real. It's basically impossible. Just use the complimentary valet. read more

Came in with high expectations, the menu sounded great, but the execution didn't quite match. The duck pasta had good flavor, but it arrived only warm, and the "crispy" parsnip lacked crunch, making the dish feel heavier than it should. The black cod was moist and tender, as expected, but the skin wasn't crisp, it looked dark without delivering texture. Served over lentils, I expected more contrast to balance the softness, but the dish felt one-dimensional. There was also a slightly fishy note that could have been lifted with a touch of lemon. The popovers were disappointing, served cold and chewy, not fresh. I asked for a second one and it came out the same. The complimentary bites, pork pâté and a cheese puff, were fine but nothing memorable. The chocolate cake was decent, but not something I'd come back for. Service was polite, but the experience felt off. I don't drink for health reasons, but felt subtly judged for not ordering drinks. When I asked about hosting a private event upstairs, there wasn't much engagement or information, which made me feel like I wasn't really their target customer. I did appreciate the ambiance, classic old-school vibe, and the bar area is spacious and comfortable. Overall, the ideas are there, but consistency in temperature, texture, and hospitality needs improvement. My husband and I came here for Valentine's Day celebration. We were seated at the main dining area with high ceilings, I loved the vibes and ambiance at the main dining area. Soft lighting with black interiors. Definitely make a reservation for this place if you want the main dining area. The other side of the restaurant is bar dining and more casual setting and also louder which I wouldn't enjoy as much. Services were what we might expect for a fine dining. There is a bit of a confusion our waiter made though to give us Selby's bottled water for nearly $12 while we only wanted still water (regular water, not bottled). Not a big deal but a bit of a surprise to us later that we got the bottled water for a charge. I ordered the risotto (my entree) which I think there is too much black truffle oil at the edges of the risotto and I wouldn't appreciate too much oil, black truffle or not. My waiter is considerate to take it back and put the truffle oil on the side. Risotto is delicious but also it is rich and heavy, glad the truffle oil is on the side because it will be too much if it is all mixed into the risotto. I had the strachinno caramelle (cheese pasta) for the appetizer which was pretty good. The passion fruit tart as my dessert is perfect citrus to balance the rich/heavy risotto. Selby's popover is pretty good too, instead of some other bread options from similar fine dining restaurants. My husband had their king salmon which we find a bit fishy in taste. The menu is per person for $125 but with a surcharge on selected items from the menu where "supplement" is the extra charge. We didn't choose the supplement priced items. We had two cocktails. The bill came out to be around $400 for two people, taxes and tips included which was expected. Overall, it is a good experience for a date night. Not too impressed with the foods and offerings comparing to other similar fine dining restaurants we had been to. We decided to come to Selby's for our anniversary dinner and made an advanced reservation. The first impression was great as the restaurant's setting is beautiful and we were seated upstairs. The good however was good but not leaving a lasting impression, the service was fine but the experience wasn't such that we would want to go back... they served a good steak and beef Wellington. read more

Fancy, old money aesthetic place for dinners - if you're looking for a fancy, formal feeling steak house with classic looks, this would be for you. It's a very dark, parlor-y interior. I was here for a paid group business dinner so the bill wasn't on me, but overall it was a decent experience. The bar area is very leather upholstery, formal feeling. We were in one of the upstairs private rooms for group dinners. The vibe is sort of like Knives Out / Saltburn / a game of Clue. The room was very dark and we were closed in the room, which honestly was kind of creepy. It's Michelin rated so as expected the food is good (tuna tartare, petite filet mignon) but I'm not sure if I'd consider it impressive at that price point and amounts are of course small. Service is attentive but again, I'd expect it. Parking is rough here so definitely take advantage of their valet, a lot of the area is congested due to its busy location on El Camino / not parkable due to the nursing home next door. Overall it was an interesting experience but it's not really my type of place. read more
