I went to Selby's recently and overall I loved the food. We ordered the Brentwood corn agnolotti, beef wellington, and the butter poached Maine lobster. We ate in the Lounge. If you don't want an expensive prix fixe then the Lounge could be a good option, but seating is limited and it tends to fill up quickly. The starter I got was the agnolotti. They were soft on the outside and the filling was smooth and had a delicate flavor. It came with mushrooms that were firm, but tender with a slight bite. I also ate the butter poached lobster. The texture of the lobster was tender and soft. It was served with gnocchi, a root vegetable, and black trumpet mushrooms. The gnocchi were tender and a little bit dense. The root vegetable was sweet, soft and reminded me of a radish, but it's actually called Oyster Plant. Selby's has a great menu and has lots of great food. read more

We came to Selby's for our anniversary and had a really nice experience overall. Vicente was our server and did a great job. He gave helpful input on drinks based on what we usually like, and was very accommodating when we decided to switch one out. Service felt attentive without being over the top. They also brought out several complimentary items to help us celebrate, which was a thoughtful touch and made the night feel special without making a big production out of it. Food-wise, everything was flavorful and well executed. The beef Wellington was rich and cooked perfectly, and the ribeye was just as good. We also requested truffle fries and they had a great flavor and texture! For dessert, we had the sticky toffee pudding and the chocolate cake, which were both solid choices, especially the sticky toffee pudding. Took the husband here for his birthday dinner in December and I would say it's good but didn't wow me. I know any classic American restaurant can only be "so good" right? But nah, Gary Danko which is my favorite classic American restaurant (who just lost their Michelin star) is very consistent with their food (not innovative but consistent). Anyways, our server was very nice but at one point he sat at couple next to us and asked if they were celebrating anything and they said no, just a date night and the server said "oh you two are so dressed up I just figured you were celebrating, people dont dress up anymore so im glad you did and didn't come in athleisure" this was particularly funny bc here i am sitting in my athleisure wear haha. I went with the supplement add on of lobster pasta and then I went with lobster as my entree and my husband got the tuna tartare with a steak. The food was good but again it didn't wow me and I figured with a Michelin star that it would. At the end if the meal they give all these homemade caramels and those were very delicious! We opted for the duck and the ribeye, which were delicious. The popovers were a fun surprise in flavor (made with beef tallow). The ambiance for the early evening was quiet but light. I came here with a couple of coworkers, unsure of what to expect. I've been to Michelin star restaurants before, but it's usually a set menu that takes several hours. We sat in the bar area upfront and ordered à la carte off the menu. It was absolutely delicious. The food was amazing, the ambience of the bar area with the dark wood and excellent lighting was fantastic. The service was impeccable. I've been to Selby's three times over the past couple of years, always with colleagues for team dinners. Most recently, we dined there last week. Each time, we've reserved the private room upstairs--whether it's a group of 12 or a full team of 30. The food is consistently excellent, the drinks are well made, and the wait staff is professional, warm, and attentive. I've tried the wagyu loin steak, beef Wellington, tuna tartare, chocolate mousse cake, and panna cotta--all standouts. The restaurant itself has this elegant, Old Hollywood charm. Finally got to check out Selby's. We were able to snag a spot at the bar, and it was fun watching the bartenders make drinks. The bar area also had a few tables and was very lively and loud. Miguel was the man--very personable and fun to talk to while we enjoyed our meal. They started us off with truffle popcorn, which was amazing: delicious with a great truffle flavor. I should have asked for a refill, but I didn't. We got a couple cocktails and they were delicious. Started off with the muscles and they were kind enough to split it into. These muscles were big and so juicy and plump and fresh. The bread it came with was perfect to dip in the sauce. We got the chicken Parmesan, which was kind of underwhelming, especially for the price. It was probably just one chicken breast split in half. It was nicely fried and crispy and the sauce was good, but overall not much to write home about. We also got the steak Frites, which was perfectly cooked and tender. The sauce came with was delicious. The fries were crispy as well. We ended with that apple dessert and it was amazing. There was so many different textures and layers to it very well. Beef Wellington is top notch, especially the wine sauce, chef's magic kiss. It comes with big portion, enough to feed two people. Appetizers are both exquisite but very tiny plate. Australia Tai Sniper is on the dry side. Chocolate cake is a big slice, ganache layer on top is perfectly made. Oh my gahhhhhh. Husband booked a dinner here to celebrate our anniversary and it was amazing! Service was top notch; frequent check-ins without being excessive, and if anything was delayed, they took good care of us! We also received a lovely card from the staff for the occasion. The food was so goooood. Their seasonal dishes were divine but we also wanted to try some of their staples. The chestnut soup was *chef's kiss*. For the mains... my filet mignon was so (expletive) delicious!! I haven't had red meat in a long time and this entree made me ask myself "WHY." Everything was fantastic! As for mood, it is a classy looking place with old time-y decor with some modern touches, like the lighting fixtures on the ceiling. The lighting was dim though, so hubby and I didn't take many photos but that's fine (for us, maybe not for this review- sorrry!). The chairs were sort of heavy and hard to move so the person sitting behind me and I bumped chairs a few times because we were placed so closely to them and had difficulty trying to get out of each other's way. I was a little worried about foot traffic around our table, because they sat us right behind a service station but it ended up totally fine. For those with mobility needs, there are two stories but they do have elevators, so if the host/ess starts climbing the steps just let them know. Again the phenomenal service and food will definitely bring us back to celebrate many more special occasions here! read more

Folks who make a deposit here - make sure to check they pay it back! Made reservations online for a meal with mom and dad where I was charged $225 as a deposit, where it was clearly stated that this would be refunded on our arrival. Arrived early, had our meal, paid, and left. Few weeks later I check my credit card statement online and lo and behold, the $225 was never refunded. Had to call/email them and get it taken off manually. The food/experience itself was 3 stars - it was OK, but not worth the price, and not nearly as good as similarly priced restaurants. I enjoyed both the tartare and steak frites and thought they were cooked great! As for the caesar salad, I felt a little bit disappointed as it was just some uncut long pieces of lettuce. We came here for a fancier than usual date night. Entering Selby's is like entering into different decade/world- with an Old Hollywood upscale vibe. There's a main seating area which is separate the bar area, which is definitely photo-op worthy. It's a mandatory 3 course dinner menu, with a starter, main and dessert. They also gave an amuse-bouche, along with complimentary popovers which was amazing, and wrapped candy at the end. Service was very good, everyone was very attentive. I would just add that given the vibe they are going through, while our waiter was just fine, I didn't feel like I was walked through an experience like I did at Protege and The Sea by Alexander. If you know your wines, this is the place since the wine list is a serious novel. For the appetizers, I just loved my YellowFin Tuna Tartare. We had just come back from Hawaii actually, and this raw fish definitely surpassed most dishes we had there! loved the fresh chips it came with My husband had the ravioli which were beautifully plated, and made with very fresh pasta. For entrees, my sea bass was quite good, though not in a mouth wateringly buttery/flaky way that I most prefer. My husband paid extra for the dry-aged ribeye. I guess he fell for the story the waiter gave him on how the farmer who raised the cattle, haha! We enjoyed our desserts as well. Profiterole was amazing- I had to ask what that meant, but it was basically a fancy cream puff with ice cream stuffed inside. The ceasar was quite disappointing just a couples prices of lettuce with and sauce dropped on top that was unmixed so you had varying bites of flavour. Tartare was good but the chips for the tuna were far too salty. Burger was great juicy and tangy from the horseradish's. steak fruit was cooked to perfection and meat like butter with a lovely garlic aoli. Service was kinda meh server was a little sassy which I could have lived without. This review is coming from a place of surprise and almost disbelief that this kind of archaic restaurant and attitude still exists in the Valley. We went there because a family member wanted to try the 'Beef Wellington,' and it was a celebratory special occasion. Ambiance: The restaurant is two levels and dimly lit, and there is an attempt to create the 'hushed' sophistication, with formally dressed staff members gliding around. We were seated on the second floor, and it was fine till then. Then it all started - the waitress who served us had the worst attitude, was condescending, did not welcome us correctly, did not share any information, did not smile once, and was extremely abrupt. This is not acceptable in the food service industry. Plus, this is not the first 'stuffy and uptight' restaurant we have been to; even the French Laundry and Chez Panisse have smiling, kind staff. Anyway, we complained, and then of course, everyone was gushing and present. Food: The meal is prix fixe. The food was ridiculously underwhelming! This is the land of California cuisine, Alice Waters, and farm-to-table. How can you get away with a 'tuna tartare' that has NO flavor? We had to ask for lime juice to give it some flavor - of course, our waitress, who made eye contact with me and then looked away, did not bring it to us. The 'Beef Wellington' was terrible with no prosciutto or mustard, and the Alaskan halibut was dry and covered in a less-than-inspiring sauce with a sorry side of veggies. The desserts were the only saving grace. After eating here, anyone who appreciates the beautifully nuanced flavors that are so generously available in the Bay Area restaurants will know what I am talking about. A well-deserved Michelin star for this steakhouse! This steakhouse had been on my list for a while since it was featured on the Michelin Guide, so I had high expectations. It's sort of difficult to call this place a steakhouse because this restaurant is more of a fine dining establishment. When I first arrived, I had to valet my car as there was no street parking really available (I don't usually like to use a valet because I don't want my car accidentally damaged). The restaurant itself is a massive 2 story restaurant with a nice bar/lounge on the first floor and the second floor is the main dining room. I suggest anyone who makes a reservation here to dress a little more upscale because the interior is on the fancier side. The menu is pretty straightforward. You select three courses and create your own tasting menu. I chose the tuna tartar, New York steak, and a pistachio savarin dessert. Halibut tasting spoons were given as a complimentary course and they were very tasty. The tuna tartar course was visually stunning and the quality of the tuna was great. For the steak, it was a little on the fattier side for myself and it felt more like a fatty ribeye than a NY steak. The steak was perfectly cooked and well seasoned; however, I found it a little hard to eat due to the amount of fat in it. The other members in my party ordered the petite filet mignon and they enjoyed it a lot. Also, the dessert was a little underwhelming as it had a bitter aftertaste from the sauce they used. I expected more of a pistachio aftertaste, but the sauce they used was like a bitter raspberry sauce and it did not pair well with the pistachio. If I return to eat here again, I will definitely choose a different cut of meat and a different dessert option because I think the quality of cooking here was up to par with Michelin guide standards. The service was a little slow at times, but the restaurant is so huge that I could sympathize with the wait staff having to walk to and from the kitchen. Sides has zero flavor as well. Desserts Flan - Decent not bad, not a big flan person but it was a 3/5 Profiterole - No balance felt like one of those desserts I'd buy frozen and let thaw out 2/5 Chocolate cake - My betty crocker box cakes as a kid does a better job 2/5 I don't see why they have a star, obviously it's not the food. We wanted to try Selby's since we had a stellar experience at The Village Pub (their sister restaurant). I booked a dinner to celebrate my boyfriend's birthday and they kindly accommodated my seating request as I had my eye on a particular spot. Similar to The Village Pub, they offer a 3-course tasting menu for $125. You get your choice of a starter, entree, and dessert. Some of the options have a supplemental fee, but overall, a pretty good deal for a Michelin-level restaurant. Parking can be a bit tricky, but they offer valet services. We were able to find parking just steps away from the restaurant on El Camino. For starters, we chose the pear endive salad and ricotta cavatelli. The salad was light and refreshing, and the pasta dish hit the spot as I've been craving truffle pasta. For mains, we got the pheasant and diver scallops. My boyfriend enjoyed the pheasant but said he's had better at other restaurants. He mentioned his portion seemed more substantial compared to my scallops. However, because I got the pasta to start with (a heavier dish compared to the salad), I didn't leave hungry. I also thought the scallops were cooked well and the sunchokes and muscat grapes complemented the dish. Desserts fell flat. We were given a complimentary mini yuzu cassis cake to celebrate his birthday and enjoyed that the most out of all the desserts. The best part of the pistachio savarin was the frozen greek yogurt and the citrus fruit. We didn't care too much for the savarin itself (felt like a dry dense donut to us). The sticky date pudding also fell short of expectations. Instead of a moist cake, it reminded us of a bundt cake and was also a bit too heavy for us. We left the majority of our desserts on the plate because it wasn't worth the calories given how little we enjoyed it. We also got a couple mignardises to end the meal - a piece of mint chocolate and a fruit jelly. I have always detested fruit jellies, and have no idea why I though Selby's would prove differently. However, the mint chocolate was enjoyable. If I had to compare, I would go back to The Village Pub over Selby's. While I enjoy the ambience of Selby's more, I thought the food and desserts at The Village Pub was more on par with a restaurant of this caliber. I also felt like the service was friendlier at The Village Pub. Staff were nice enough at Selby's, but I think they go above and beyond at the former to make you feel truly welcome. read more

My friend was so blown away by her birthday dinner she had in April that she said we needed to come here for my birthday, which was six months later. =) It was a special treat! For starters we got the heirloom salad and tuna tartare which were both fresh and bursting with flavor. I got the honey lacquered duck breast for my entree, which was amazing. My friend was going back and forth between the Selby's burger, which our server described as "an elevated Big Mac" and the black label burger which he said was "full of umami". She settled on the black label burger and told him it was exactly as he described. Very rich, she was only able to take a couple bites. Our other friend got the halibut which was light and moist. I loved the potato scales on it. The mini complimentary birthday cake was so cute and delicious and they also had a nice birthday card at the table greeting me. Very nice touches. The chocolate cake was huge and not too sweet. My panna cotta was beautifully presented and equally fantastic in taste. The only item we didn't care much for was the profiterole which was very dense. $105 for a three course prix fixe with some additional supplements on the peninsula at a Michelin restaurant is almost a steal these days! On a side note, the bar has an a la carte menu that you can also order from in the dining room (ie: the Shelby burger, and our server also told us we could interchange our tuna tartare with a steak tartare). Really 3.5 stars. Lobster i ordered (35 dollar surcharge) was very string-y and tough and had to send it back. This is the first time I have done so at a Michelin starred restaurant. They were apologetic and made a new one (marginally better) very quickly and gave a soup to my wife so she didn't have to be sitting with nothing while I'm finishing my main. Also gave me a free dessert wine. Tuna tartar was fatty with good flavor but somewhat underseasoned. Sweetbreads were somewhat overcooked. So food overall for a Michelin starred restaurant was at best 2.5 stars. For a regular restaurant maybe 3.5. Their service was 5 stars. Ambience 4-4.5 stars. So net 3.5 read more

We got the Petrossian caviar service with the Royal Baika and it was ridiculous, perfectly executed with all the traditional fixings.
