Before my appointment, the front desk called to tell me the therapist wanted a minimum of $45 tip on a $93 massage -- 50% of the service, requested over the phone, in advance. I've always tipped generously ($30 typically), but being called and told what to tip before service is even rendered is not how gratuity works. When I objected, I was told "other people don't react the way you do, they're happy to just tip more," and that the therapist has "regulars" who tip him over $50, so he's "used to" it -- basically telling me to fall in line with other clients' payments. She also pointed to posted "suggested tip" signs in their massage rooms (also over 50% of service cost) as proof they'd "been telling me" to tip more all along! When I said I wouldn't be booking, she cut me off mid-sentence with a dismissive "yeah, yeah" and hung up while I was still talking. No attempt to keep a years-long customer -- just hung up. If you go here: tipping isn't treated as optional. It's expected, posted, compared against other clients, and phoned in as a demand if you don't fall in line. I walked in without an appointment a few minutes after they opened on a weekday, and I met Joel (I believe that was his name). I initially asked for a 60 minute full body massage, but after about 30 minutes, I asked him to extend to 90 minutes because he was doing such a great job. He started with a gentle pressing all over, then a hot towel and wiped me down. He did some gentle stretching and massage over the sheet as a warm up, then used oil on bare skin. The head and neck massage was nice and long (most places just do it for a couple minutes). At the end, he wiped the oil off and did more stretching and massaging over the sheet. He finished it off by having me sit up and he stretched out my neck and back and hips. That's just a brief summary, since I fell asleep a few times and nearly drooled lol. Everything that he did from beginning to end was very intentional, thoughtful, and skillful. He often asked me how I was doing, and was so polite and kind. I could tell he was very experienced, because he could tell by touch what areas I was having issues with even before I said anything. Every time a part of my body cracked softly, he'd quietly whisper "nice" or "thank you" as if he just really enjoyed his job. It was very adorable lol. He also applied tiger balm to my shoulders and back because he could tell my muscles were very tight and sore. When the massage ended, he recommended I shower in the evening with hot water to soothe my muscles and wash off the tiger balm. The fact that he even thought about what I should do when I get home was very sweet. I usually leave most massage places a little disappointed and feeling liked something was missing, but I literally left with a huge smile on my face. When I got to the car, I even noticed that some minor elbow and wrist pain I've had for a few months had improved considerably!
