Really good food and the employees are pretty awesome. I've been coming here for years since I was a child and they always have incredible food and the prices are good too. Unfortunately when I went yesterday, after they didn't have power for an unknown amount of time, I got extremely sick from their food. But considering I've been coming here for over 10 years, and only got sick this one time, the restaurant shouldn't be looked down on because if it. Finally took the initiative to check this place out after driving by it numerous times. There aren't many Puerto Rican restaurants in the area and this is the first time we've tried puerto rican food and I hope this won't be the last. The food was actually really good and had a lot of flavor. I ordered the lechon with rice and beans and I can honestly say that the lemon flavor on the pork gave it a real kick. To say the least, my dish was really good and hope to try more some other time. My girl ordered the beef tacos and we thought they were really good. The beef wasn't dry and had just the right amount of spice to it. Their salsa was the perfect compliment to the taco. Well, here is why I leave out the one star. The service was great, the food was good, but a gnat flew out of the 3rd taco we ordered. They were so good until the moment that gnat came out the taco. Point I'm trying to make is that it was kind of gross seeing flys in the restaurant and have one come out of the tacos. Of course, we lived and we didn't get sick, but it was kind of nasty seeing bugs. Overall, I hope to come back and see less bugs. read more

As you recall from ALL my reviews - I like to speak to the entire experience - from the moment you park in the lot to the moment you are exiting the establishment. IT ALL MATTERS to the customer so it MUST MATTER to the owner and chef! I'm giving this place a very generous 4-Stars - cause I'm looking forward to actually sitting down, being served and eating on-sight. But for now... Parking lot is a bit tricky so be careful. Someone was pulling out and they almost hit me because he wasn't really looking. Take the note. The music is GREAT!! It's at a level that is just loud enough to enjoy and low enough that it isn't annoying! And the music was great!! (I know I mentioned that twice!) The service at the counter was really helpful I'm guessing his spot is Family-owned and operated. I saw the menu boards and realized that whomever was cooking - leaned heavily on the Mexican cuisine. And given the area - I'm guessing it was planned. The Alcapurria was tasty. It was crispy. It was crunchy. It was also a bit dry. I think in the preparation they are straining too much of the juices out. (Note to owners - tell the prep cooks to leave the juice in the mix when assembling. I kinda have the same note for the Rellenos De Papa - a little on the salty side, but crispy and crunchy! The potato had a strange spongy texture - that could be the use of dehydrated potatoes or they were mixed too long and the starches started turning. This happens when you over-mix mashed potatoes. It's an easy mistake - albeit a rookie one. The Pastelillo de Carne, again, a little salty but crispy & crunchy. And again the filling was a little dry for my taste. I do remember the Pastelilloas of MY childhood were much MUCH bigger. Not the filling - the dough! It was a WOW factor. Didn't happen here. I took my food to go so can't tell you how the server was while taking the order. The young lady at the counter was pleasant enough. I do plan on going back w a few friends and ordering HEAVILY from the Puerto Rican side of the menu. Being Puerto Rican on this side of the country limits the foods I can reflect on. I'm hoping I can come here another time and be whisked away to that time where we looked forward to dinner at home cause my mom was a killer cook!! It's what inspires me to become a chef!! I came on a Monday night at 6pm with my in-laws & son. There was no one there but us but the seating area could optimally seat 60+ people. A few tables were dirty but they were quick to clean them & say we could sit anywhere. Just made me wonder whatms the foot traffic like...if they were busy, the tables would always be cleaned immediately. No? I got the chicken mofongo relleno with puerto rican rice ($10.99) & a soft chicken taco for my son ($1.79). My dish was a tad heavy on the carbs but delicious. The mofongo relleno seems to be a dish made of masa(?), corn & perhaps plantains(?) It is deep fried & holds the chunks of moist garlicy chicken...best edible bowl after the waffle! The Puerto Rican rice has beans & shreds of pork. Very tasty & I loved the layers of textures. The taco has the same moist chicken & came with raw onions & tomatoes. Def makes me want to try their hard shell ones! My FIL got another Puerto Rican dish but I didn't catch the name of it. It was a plantain split & filled with ground beef & cheese. After weeks of studying for midterms and, most importantly, finishing them, I finally made a quick lunch stop at Senor Big Ed Puerto Rican and Mexican Food. Can we say, "Holy awesome" here? Because that's the way to describe the people, the service and best of all - the FOOD! It's actually a new-found love for me. "The way to a girl's heart is through her stomach," and Senor Big Ed has found a way to my heart. I made the 15-minute trip from campus to Senor Big Ed's, which is located in Cypress. Parking was limited, but surprisingly not crowded. This was during lunch hour, too! I met up with two friends and we were seated almost immediately. We took a while to order but the waitress was very patient. She would check on us every so often and even offered to explain the menu. Finally, we ordered: the Pollo en Fricase (Stewed Chicken Fricasee) for $7.50, the Sampler Plate for $11.50 and the Super Burrito for $3.99. The Chicken Fricasee was extremely tender with a zesty tomato taste (kind of like chicken tortilla soup) with bay leaf. This entrée came with a choice of white rice or Puerto Rican rice. We chose Puerto Rican (shredded pork and pigeon peas) rice with a side of banana chips. Oh man, the sampler plate (pictured at top of post). Can you already guess? For new diners like us, who weren't quite sure what side orders to get, Senor Big Ed has a special "Sampler Plate" on the menu, where you get a little bit of everything on one big plate: one Puerto Rican tamale, one meat turnover, one cheese turnover, one alcapurria (green banana fritter stuffed with ground beef), one relleno de papas (a fried mashed-potato ball stuffed with ground beef), tostones (fried green plantain patties) and fried yellow plantains. The items on this plate were heavy, mostly deep fried, and without a doubt delicious! The caramelized banana was sweet and Puerto Rican tamale was interesting, using banana instead of corn bread (what I'm used to). Whew, two words: food coma. Seriously, what were we thinking ordering a burrito after all this food? At this point, we're trying to regain consciousness from all that fried goodness. The Super Burrito did not fail us. Inside was beef (you also have a choice of chicken or pork), lettuce, tomatoes, onions, cheese and guacamole. For $3.99, it was huge! The super burrito was interestingly crunchy from the diced onions and lettuce and had a refreshing taste from the cool guacamole mixed with the savory diced beef. This item was our "best value" find. It's amazing that this establishment has been in business for 20 years, and I hope it will continue for 20 more, at least. Great service. Greater food. read more

So I'm planning on a PR trip this coming month so I've been reading places to visit, where to eat, etc... I was reading about this mofongo that's super popular in PR, so if y'all know me - you know I'm A BIIIIG fan of plantains and anything made out of them. So reading up on mofongo, I start drooling and dreaming about it every night. So I set my goal to get this mofongo before I even go visit PR. My friend is married to a PRican so I asked - hey where can I get PR food?! She said - Big Ed's!!! I'm like, is that the only one? 'coz I dont' want to drive that far. She's like - only one in town and worth trying! So I said fine, we'll do the drive. That was a month ago - then this weekend, I decided -I NEED to try this thing, and off we went... When driving through the neighborhood - I'm like... baby! we're in the ghetto! every single restaurant we pass by is fast food or tacos, what up! Then I'm thinking - this is more Mexican town than it is Puerto Rican, but oh well let's keep driving. Then we arrive to this place and I vaguely recall being here before! with my same friend. I parked right by the entrance and then pictures of the dishes already have me drooling. OMG!!! It looks so delicious!!! We go in, the place is spacious and not crowded - at all, only 2 other tables were taken. We pick our own seats and the waitress, such a nice person! She was very nice and attentive, also gave us the 411 on the menu. I asked a few questions on the different dishes and settled for Mofongo (which I already knew I wanted to get). But man, i was battling inside - the pictures for the pork chops had me mesmerized. But I fought the urge and got the mofongo relleno with pork. So, I never had mofongo before, but because it was made with plantain and the pork was super juicy - it was a very tasty dish. I think it would have done better with a little more salt, but I added some hot sauce and I was in heaven. If you're not used to eating plantains, know that after a couple of bites, that stuff fills you UP! I tried my best to eat it all but couldn't finish the whole dish, so I took the rest home. The pork was tender and juicy, a great complement to the mofongo itself. But wait! what made the dish even better was the broth the dish came in. Because we all know plantains can be a bit dry, the broth made it ultra delicious and juicy...OMG my mouth is watering now that I'm thinking about it. In fact, as I mentioned before, I didn't finish my whole dish, so I might have the leftovers for dinner tonight! Gaaaaahhhhhhh... Oh Mofongo - I heart you. I'll definitely be coming back for that pork chop tho... yum yum pork chop, now I'm obsessed with you. And Big Ed's - thank you for existing. First, I don't know why this restaurant is under the Cuban category. It's Puerto Rican food. Mr. P. looked cute, so I took him out. I took Daughter with us too. I just wanted a relleno de papa (mashed potato ball filled with ground beef). But then I saw the Puerto Rican sampler for $12. You get a relleno de papa, an alcapurria, a pastel, two pastellilos, some maduros, and some tostones. In short, you get most of the good PR stuff you really want, without the rice and bean filler. I was on that. Daughter: I want a relleno de papa, tostones and a quesadilla! Me: I'll order the sampler and an extra mashed potato ball. Mr. P: she can eat the pastellilo de queso. Me (inside): She wants MEXICAN at a PR restaurant?!?!?!? We got the sampler and an extra potato ball. Daughter also got a Cola Champagne. By now, you know I like balls, but these balls seemed smaller than I remembered. Still tasty, though. The alcapurria was soooo good: crispy, savory goodness. I had the warm fuzzies while eating it. The pastel was tasty, with good masa. The tostones had just the right balance of crunch and light sweetness. The meat pastellilo was crispy like a Church's turnover, and had really tasty beef inside. Daughter: I want another cheese pastellilo. Of course I got her one. Have to reward her for trying unfamiliar ethnic food. Our server seemed a little distracted, so it took a while to get drinks. But it's probably because she was the only one serving. As we were leaving, someone else came on duty. For under $20, the three of us ate really well. I had been wanting to try out Puerto Rican food for the longest, aside from wanting to visit the wonderful island. I was so happy when I found out about this place 1-2 yrs ago, and i finally got to go today. Starting with the location itself, it's basically a hole-in-the-wall spot, and the interior is quite nice. It's truly like being in PR itself. Simple decor, old chairs/tables.. it left quite a traditional feel to things in this building which I really liked. Customer service was wonderful as well. The lady kept checking up on us to make sure everything is cool. Now here comes the food - it was awesome. I ordered the sampling platter since I had no idea what to choose. Only downer of this is A LOT of meat lol, and I suggest you balance it out with rice or something, but it was definitely not bad for a first time at eating Puerto Rican food. I especially loved the fried plantains and the pastel. The pastelillo was so tasty too. Since I have such a small tummy and I couldn't finish everything, I had the rest to-go as well.. and I hear the cheese pastelillo is awesome so I can't wait to feast on it tonight as well. I went w a real Puerta Rican who actually knew what they were getting so I can't say I was involved in the food choices/remember what everything we got was...
