I stumbled upon this place on Yelp, because I was starving to death in my Brain and Behavior class that I had resulted to looking at food reviews online. I only tried the Mofongo. I have mixed feelings about it. At first it tastes like potatoes (i know it's plantain) but then I dumped the sauce (AH FAT JUICE) on it, and just mushed it up. A part of me was kind of disgusted that i was eating all this rich, tasty FAT and wanted to vomit no joke! I didn't really taste alot of meat though. BUT i'm excited to try different stuff I'm thinking about the one of the Rice dishes with Chicken. Their site has their complete menu. This place is a dine in place with to go option? I rarely give 5 stars. But at Big Ed's I wish I could give 6. I have taken my family there at least a dozen times and not once have any of us been dissatisfied. I invite you to take a cultural culinary tour here. I have not found any dish to be bad. My favorites are The Bisteak en Cebollita, The Pernil, and the Sampler Platter. Wasnt impressed with the food at all drove an hour just to try a new place but this was just not worth it . Rice with guandules was tasteless and you can tell its been reheated rice not fresh. Pork was not good also no flavor and plantains were way to soggy. I ate puerto rican, dominican and cuban food before and this was not to part. My son had fries and they were so dry. Not impressed at all, not authentic puertorrican food. Service is awful, the female waitres wasn't nice and have this attitude like she was doing me a favor just for serving the food. When I get to this place all the tables were dirty and it wasn't crowded. I have to clean my own table, the funny thing is that the waitres saw me cleaning and didn't come to pick up the dirty plates. I have to put them in another table. Right after I left the restaurant, me and my family got sick. My children vomit their guts out, I got diarrhea. The food wasn't good no flavor just blah, it's cook for mexicans, so no real boricua sazón (the owner and his family cook and also work as waitress), but I never knew that we were going to get sick. I don't recommend this place. I rather drive to Riverside to BBQ SAN JUAN RESTAURANT and get delicious puertorrican food, freshly made and cook for authentic puertorrican chefs. Not being Puerto Rican and being able to count the number times I've had Puerto Rican food on one hand, I have to say the food was pretty good. But the service was so bad it was hard to concentrate on the food. The three of us arrived and found ourselves a table. We were given menus and our drink orders were taken. After a while we ordered. We noticed a couple who had came in after we had and ordered their food well after we had. Well, they got their food before we did. When our food finally started arriving, well it was one meal at a time and long intervals in between the arrivals of the rest of the meals. I really hate this sort of thing. One of us had ordered a side of rice with the meal which didn't come with the meal. Finally had to ask the waitress to bring the missing side of rice. Terrible, just terrible wait service. The waitresses just seemed to slowly shuffle their way around delivering orders like they could really care less or like they wished they were somewhere else. About the only way we'd consider going back would be to call in a order while en route pick it up and drive to one of the two nice parks nearby on Orange Ave and make a picnic of it. read more

This place is phenomenal. The pasteles reminded me of my childhood; they were so good I wanted to cry. The mofongo is excellent as well. The tostones were the only thing lacking here, get maduros instead (they were great!). The prices are very reasonable. I now have a place to rejuvenate my homesick Puerto Rican soul. read more

Over the years I've been going back and forth in hopes the PR food tastes more authentic than the last but it just doesn't compare to real PR food, the arroz con gandules tastes nothing like the real deal they're missing so many key ingredients that can make they're food so much more better and real, but it just taste like Mexican food trying to be PR food. Walked in and the young lady didn't greet just asked if we were dining in to sit down and she would bring menu. The girls that work here need to learn better customer service, they need to be friendlier and at least act like they like their job. The food presentation is horrible. I went here for lunch today for the first time with an entertainment coupon, and couldn't ask for more. This place has it all: huge portions, super-low prices, tasty food, superb service, and a clean atmosphere. I got the #8 burrito, which came with a salad, rice and beans. The burrito was absolutely massive - enough to split with a friend. It was really like a meal and a half, all for only $5.99! My wife had the cheese enchiladas, which also came with a salad and rice and beans, and was also only $5.99. With the 2 for 1 entertainment book coupon, the total bill ended up being $5.99 plus tax! That's unheard of!!! I was so satisfied, I would have been happy to pay for both meals. If I lived closer to Senor Big Ed's I'd be a regular for sure! After hearing about MOFONGO from food critic/chef Guy Fieri, I decided to find a local restaurant that sold this dish that Guy was crazy about. Ya, it was good.. maybe needed something else on the side. My daughter really liked it and is now a fan of this PR dish. Since we are mexican, and not really sure of the PR side of the menu (1/2 of the menu os PR dishes and the other 1/2 is mexican dishes), I didnt really know what to order. So, I ordered the chile verde, which was decent. The protions are substantial. I ordered the pastellitos and LOVED them! My mother used to make them when I was a child, and yup.. these were just how I rememered them. YUM! I ordered the carne and the queso ones. Took my two besties out for dinner since this is what they wanted. First time here and very much in the mood for some puertican food...especially the arroz con gandules..mmmm! The restaurant was a little shabby looking. The waitress...well I don't want to make excuses that it was late and she probably had a long day but she wasn't attentive to our needs when we ordered drinks she didn't bring one of us what we ordered or took too long to bring it. My friend also ordered something to go and she never put the order in and we were the last people in the restaurant and they closed the kitchen. But other than that the food was delicious. I ordered the Canoa De Platano...it was a sweet plantain filled with ground beef and cheese with rice. Papa rellenos... me and my best friend used to drive all the way to downey area to go to Portos but I am constantly on the lookout for stuff in this area. Driving by I saw a sign that said pastelles... so I yelped it and saw papa rellenos Which are basically fried mashed Potato balls with meat in the middle. I tried those and the empanadas. .... the papa rellenos were great... maybe could have used alittle more spices, but great. The empanadas were the fried kind not baked. They were pretty good too... again maybe could have usef more spices, butt good portion and good taste so I will go back. The empanadas were $1.85 filled with meat $1.65 with cheese, definitely worth it. The potato balls were $2.55 and huge again fair pricing. The location has onsite dining and a cute authentic feel to it... try it. read more
