I had not been to a Sephora in years, so when I went in the other day to buy my sister a gift card, I didn't really know what to expect. I was immediately greeted by a very friendly man who attempted to help me find something to possibly add on and he offered quite a few wonderful suggestions and then left me to peruse on my own. I don't know if it's because the location is so small or what, but I felt overwhelmed by the sheer number of employees there, not because they were there, but because I was approached by every single one of them, some on multiple occasions and they all basically seemed to just want the sale, not to actually help me. I work in retail and I understand where these employees are coming from (making sure customers know you're there to help, greeting, checking in, etc.), but I was very put-off by my experience here. I kept telling them I came specifically for a gift card and that I just wanted to browse and it was like that wasn't good enough and they kept pushing and pushing. Im an average male who NEVER frequents the mall other than deal with the Apple store across the Sephora. Today, well... the iPhone went in for repair and was stacked 1.5 hours more than expected. I knew that I was running out of my typical Polo XX and Black and went to visit Sephora. First, I needed to replace a travel cologne travel spray bullet and had that delivered as i was searching but a Tom Ford Noir caught my eye. I trust my intuition and sprayed a sample on a sample stick. It appealed and was greeted very courteously and professionally by staff who handed me to a specialist with what I was interested in at this time. On I went to try the entire work by Tom Ford in the Portofino line. I sprayed a few sample sticks and asked random female customers what they thought and based my personal preferences in addition to their impromptu blind focus group results! I dont know If I have been under a rock but the price of product per ounce has significantly increase several hundred fold since I last bought Sephora product (Polo Black and XX). Irregardless I did make the purchase for TWO Tom Ford products vs going back to Polo in the experimentation that this fragrance will be as enjoyable as the last. Thanks to a Sarah the rest of Sephora staff at the Fair Oaks location, making the shopping experience for a man is a comfortable, educational experience! I normally order from the website but stopped by the store a few weeks ago. The staff were all very attentive, knowledgeable and friendly. My daughter was looking for a particular product and even though the store was crowded, they took time to talk with us, ask what concern she was trying to address and recommend a different product that she thought worked better (and was cheaper). This is the smallest Sephora I have ever seen but it was still packed with a lot of goodies. I found what I was looking for and got a sample of foundation to try at home to wear for a full day before I decide if I'm going to commit to a whole bottle. The lady that helped me had a quirky personality and her make-up didn't seem all that put together so I'm not sure I would trust her to give me a make-over but I'm sure she'll get better with more practice. This will hold you over with your make-up supplies until you can find a bigger Sephora or make-up counter in a department store. read more

I go to this Sephora all the time. Today they made me feel like a criminal. I've literally spent almost $3,500 dollars here over the past year & I could tell they thought I was stealing. I understand they want to protect their products but I work retail as well. They need to work on their approach. I even grabbed a basket and asked associates questions about products so they would back off and one young lady literally followed me all over the store. Aren't they supposed to be their zones? I was so uncomfortable, especially since the store was busy, there was no reason I needed to be followed. Then even though the alarm didn't go off, the same girl that was following me tried to LOOK IN MY PURSE!!!! I easily had $300 in my basket but put items back one by one and only brought $40 worth of product because I'd rather spend my money in Tyson's Corner location. read more

Due to her vast knowledge I went ahead and had her help me with foundation and lipstick. Didnt plan to buy all that but she was so helpful and I needed her expertise. Loved the customer service. I love the new remodeled Sephora. I used to dread going to the Sephora in Fair Oaks mall because it was too small and crowded for my liking. I have been to Sephora many times in various malls, but I must say I received outstanding assistance today. My best friend and I received great customer service from Sarah in the fragrance department. I explained to her that I am currently searching for a new signature perfume scent and she was extremely helpful. After helping me find some samples to think about she continued to look for scents that I may like and I loved every one of them! I am giving this place a four star rating because not all of the associates were as friendly as Sarah. For example, when we asked an employee about a good tinted moisturized she pointed us to a general direction and walked away......rude and not helpful at all. read more

Four stars now. They've changed some things starting with staff. Their customer service is great now. I have built relationships with a few of the artists there. The new store is beautiful. It opened July 9th & the selection is amazing. It's a fairly clean store, I've never noticed anything dusty or yucky which is a big deal to me, especially at a makeup store. The beauty station lights are pretty cool, too. If I'm not mistaken, they have different settings for natural light, beauty light & a dim light. I've never had a makeover there but I wouldn't be "scared" to do so. The manager or "director" as I think they call it, is pretty amazing, too. Nice girl and seems to know what she's talking about, too! I'm leaving only 4 stars because the girl that followed me around in my original review, still works there...oh well. read more

This is my regular sephora spot for cosmetics shopping, and today they really disappointed me. 2 girls were talking to each other all the time and I had to ask for help a few times before they paid any attention. Then they claimed not to have any of the products I was interested in, however, I could find it later by myself. When I asked what was the difference between eau de toilet and eau de perfume she said it was just different packaging. And the girl who was helping me was not super polite and acted like she was above me. Not the best experience at all. read more

The manager went through every bottle they had in the drawer to help me find the one I was trying to redeem. RETURNS given only as store credit even with a receipt?? whaaaat?? I don't shop here anymore... See previous reviews. I did have a return that I previously purchased at Tysons last week. When will I learn to not go back? Anyway back to the return: I spent $150 or so from my Visa and $47 something on a gift card. They wanted to put ALL of the money on store credit even with a receipt. No. Just no. As stated on the receipt: "We will be glad to credit you in the same form of payment with which your purchase was made." However the logic they gave me tonight is as follows: lets say you buy the $200 Glo teeth whitening system and use a $10 gift card and the rest in cash/debit/credit card, the manager at this store explained that their "new" system will put it on a store credit. Well... That's one way to steal your money! Worst part is Sephora CS says its up to the managers how you get your money back from returns. So either don't combine gift cards and YOUR money or just don't EVER do a return. Right now I'm waiting on a district manager to contact me because this store (and possibly Tysons/Reston) need to change the wording on their receipts or put up a huge sign at the register. On a side note: if you buy products online and return it, it will go back in the form you paid. Guess I'll only purchase items online. Too bad I'm stuck with a crapload of store credit that you can't use online. Customer service FAIL. read more

My experience at Sephora today was one of the worst customer service experiences I've ever had. Last Saturday I made an appointment to get a CMA or full face makeup done after we made a purchase of $70, more than the minimum $45 or $50 needed to make a full-face makeup appointment. I completely understand why there is that minimum purchase charge. They did not have appointments that day that I could make so I asked to make an appointment later. The store was very busy and we ended up waiting 10 - 20 minutes to make the appointment. The appointment was written down in the appointment book for today, February 2 at 2 pm and the woman who wrote down the appointment also wrote me the appointment time and date. She asked me to be 10 minutes early but did not give any other direction. I was looking forward to my appointment all week - to learn more about different products and looks. Today I arrived at Sephora at 1:50 pm and asked where I needed to go for my appointment. They did not find my appointment written down on their appointment list and the makeup artist was hesitant to believe me until her manager said that they could "fit me in". Then she told me about the minimum purchase amount and I told her that I had already made that last week when my appointment was set up. I understand that she probably would not have made commission off of my appointment but she should have realized that if I am coming in to learn more about makeup (which I told her was my reason for coming) that I don't have a lot of beauty products and am looking to learn and expand my collection. She did not believe that I had made an appointment the previous week and was very disrespectful and belittling to me so I asked to speak with a manager. The manager came over very quickly and I tried to explain what happened and she asked for the receipt from last week which I explained that I did not know that I would need to bring it. I should have showed them my sephora insider card where the purchase was recorded but didn't think of that and they did not ask. She said that they could do it "this once" and talked to me like I was a rebellious rude teenager trying to take advantage of them instead of a customer who came in for assistance and to learn and buy more products. I asked if it was possible to have a different makeup artist and the manager asked why and I said that it had been a negative interaction so she was able to send me a different artist. The second artist barely talked to me and did not explain the products used but did a good job on my makeup. It took 25 minutes (I was out at 2:25) instead of 45 minutes. I would have liked to purchase some of the products (specifically lipstick, blush, bronzer, makeup brushes, and eye shadow primer) but I did not know what the products were or what shades were used, the artist did not ask me if I was interested in the products, and I was about to cry because this entire experience was so humiliating. The customer service I experienced today was appalling. I know that the store is busy and there is the policy about minimum purchases, but it's not ok to treat a customer like they are a huge inconvenience. read more

Just left Sephora at fair oaks. Employees act indifferent and there was the manager just having a chat with another employee. Clearly I'm standing there and had to interrupt there little conversation in order to get any service. Major attitudes and eye rolls and overall laziness. Terrible service. I see why reviews are so bad at this store. No greeting when I came in. Nothing. I spend way too much money at Sephora to get low rated service. Get your crap together. Walked in with the impression that I'd just swing by and get a contour kit since they are half off due to their weekly sale, WRONG... They only had the palette available in dark and I asked if it would work for me and the girl just looked at me and said NO! I am in about every three months or so for an express service and new eye make-up. As I hate the coMpetitor AC, too pressure filled for me. I really like this store's approach.... You look beautiful, feel beautiful, then you'll buy the products I suggest. I'm a HUGE fan of sephora but this sephora at fair oaks..not so much. Every time I go there (which I stopped going there) there is atleast 1 lady always following me around and looking at me like I would steal somrthing. Like seriously? One time me and my friends went there to buy go some makeup. One if my friends were trying out the mascara sample and all of a sudden one of workers rudely told her "you can't used this." And she just took it and put it back. RUDE! After that she kept giving us a look and kept following us like we're going to steal something. We just left right after what had happened. It's really a hit or miss when you go into this store. Last time I was there this really nice girl helped me out by determining my foundation shade and as I wasn't totally sold on which one was my match she offered me three different samples so I could try them on and see which one I like better, she truly showed interest and I really appreciate it. However, most of the times you go in there you're not even noticed, if you ask for a shade match they just use a machine and give you an automatic response not even taking the time to look at you and make sure. That's how I ended up with a shade 3 times darker than me smh. But as I said it's not all bad, your experience really depends on the employees working the shift tho. read more

I was at this sephora and a whole bunch of employees were following me around the whole time, approaching me one after the other asking if I needed help with anything (I said no multiple times, mind you I hadn't moved anywhere in the store yet, still looking at one section). This lady came up to me and was like "here's a basket for the bronzer you picked up" (I hadn't picked up anything, actually never came near to the bronzer). A few employees pretended to be checking out items near by me in order to conspicuously keep their eye on me, and "conveniently" had something to check on less than 3 feet away from me wherever I went in the store. Then I asked someone that worked there if I could get a color iq match for foundation and she said: "yeah lemme see who's available" (like 6 employees were 'available' to follow me about the store so it shouldn't be so hard). Then another lady approached me and said "someone will find you and help you in 5 minutes, I'll tell them what you look like and what you're wearing" I waited about 45 minutes in he store before leaving, because I saw they were helping other customers with the color iq long after they said they would help me. (The color iq stand was completely empty when I initially asked for help). Went to Sephora in JCPenny on the way back and was helped immediately, we were finished in less than a few minutes and I got to head home. Go to Sephora in JCPenny, don't waste your time here. read more

The displays look great & I love how big the place is. Lots of girls with attitudes and literally look you up & down. There was one girl who was very helpful she is of darker complexion, glasses, and a septum piercing. I wouldn't second guess walking in if their attitudes would suck so bad. This sephora has always had very friendly associates working there, I have not met an unfriendly person who worked there to date. They are on the ball with restocking items because things that are sold out one day are normally on the shelf in a day or too. The only thing (which is not even a deal breaker) is that this location is small and awkwardly shaped compared to others, I always feel like I'm bumping into other people. I came in here to get a sample of a foundation. For the past year, I've been using drugstore foundation but they all have heavy pink undertones and I'm more yellow/olive. I was trying to get a sample of the Too Faced Born This Way foundation and the lady that helped me, let me walk out the store with stripes of foundation on my face that she used to color match me. The foundation didn't match me and every time i tried to approach somebody to help me they wouldn't realise I was there and walked away. But the lady that did help me was nice. read more

I always tend to have a good experience everytime I go to a Sephora. It doesn't really matter the location...but the girls are always really nice. They always give me tips that I didn't know, and they help me find items or offer to find answers which they dont always know (who always has all the answers anyways?). They offer to make me samples if there are no samples available, and things are usually very well organized. The only complaint I have is that sometimes they tend to run out of stock/products that are in high demands. :( I'm guessing they dont get large shipments of their products all the time. read more

I went there looking for setting powder and tinted moisturizer and there were several employees on the floor... now granted it was busy but I was standing around for 30 mins and not ONE employee approached me for assistance... I did attempt to make eye contact with several employees and even said hello to one... nothing... finally I saw one not actively engaged with anything so I politely asked her if she had a moment to help me with something.... she answered with "wassup?" I can then tell she sensed my discontent and attempted to be more "helpful". she insisted that I had her full attention and she proceeded to help me... but it still felt rushed... the tinted moisturizer that she recommended was out of stock in my shade so she told me to go to the register and ask the attendant there to call JC Penny sephora to see if they had it in stock.... when I went to the cashier and ask the girl if she could call to see if they had my shade in JCP sephora she looked at me like I was crazy and repeated my request.... by then I was done... This Sephora is small, but the staff make it a pleasurable experience. I have been several times and was helped right away with any questions. I really think that management makes an impact on how a store is run and sets the precedent as to how to meet, greet, and treat customers. On a recent outing, I went in and they were promoting colored hair extensions and all the staff was wearing one. After speaking with several Sephora reps, I ended up buying a few skin products and two of the fun colored hair pieces. This type of customer service is what keeps me coming back to this location. I would prefer to venture to astore where I know I will be treated like a valuable client even if it means driving out of my way. Messy, makeup disorganized, missing, switched up out of place- I mean show more respect for Nars products! The only way you can get an associate to acknowledge you is when you're forced to open the stock drawer to look for a missing product. I went in ready to spend nearly $100 on lip and eye products but couldn't even track down a simple brown nars eyeliner, there were a few of what I wanted in the drawer. On the top of it all a friend of mine who had noticed how the employees tend to treat certain race of customers she went back visiting with hidden camera n is now going viral on youtube.
