I'm a guy who knows absolutely nothing about make up. It might actually be the first time I've been to a make up dedicated store (rather than places like target or CVS that have just a section for it). With that disclaimer, I have no other make up store to compare this experience with. Well, I came here accompanying a friend who wanted to get some stuff. She had a slight mental list of things to get. We initially walked around undisturbed for about 5 minutes before we were asked if we needed any help. Okay let's be real, the rep was asking my friend if she needed help; I was just a baby ducking following mama duck. She accepted the help and told the rep what she was looking for. We were brought over to the products and the rep helped her out. Provided so much information and samples. Then asked my friend if she needed help with anything else. The rep was very courteous saying that provided a lot of information and will let my friend take some time to browse but if my friend had any further questions to not hesitate and ask her. This rep spent about 20 minutes helping my friend. We moved on to browse some more, but another rep came up and asked if my friend needed help looking for anything. I believe we declined this offer, browsed a little bit more and then was approached again. Finally, my friend browsing a certain section, and a rep asked if she wanted to do a color match thingy. Please excuse my highly descriptive make up jargon. The rep led her to a make up station, and talked to my friend about the brand that she was applying and exactly how she was applying it. She gave tips on how to properly apply the make up and alternatives. The rep then suggested a different brand, and my friend was willing to try it. The rep had a lot of patience and helped my friend try a few different brands and shades. I was extremely impressed by the level of service provided to my friend. Everyone was willing to help, was extremely knowledgeable, and was very patient. Is this typical for a make up store? I don't know, but I've rare seen this level of service in most places I go (restaurants, clothing stores, other misc stores). read more

I initially was shocked that SF was the only US Sephora that had the Tom Ford Private Blend fragrances. Not even in NYC?! I buy the Noir Extreme (non private blend) which is my GF's favorite unisex scent. You think that's pricey....the sticker shock on these private blends are 5 stars for Maggie's help who was very well trained on the Private Blends had some great recommendations....was nice enough to make me a few samples of Tobaccco Vanille, Champaca Absolute and Tuscan Leather. The lasting power is just amazing even for an eau du parfum. It's all perceived value when saying its overpriced. If your a bit intimidated not only because of the cost it won't be as pretentious as say buying this at Bloomies with a nose waaay up! I mean c'mon you are spending buku buck$ on cologne/perfume..I don't need the stuck up BI to deal with. The Fragrance IQ touch screen portal is really useful as well. We stopped into Sephora for more holiday shopping and I was on a mission to buy my guy some fancy colognes. He is a fan of small bottles, since he travels a lot they are convienant and he can try new scents. Since Sephora usually has sampler packs, I stopped in to pick one up. I asked for assistance and found they don't carry them anymore. Whaaaa! That didn't stop the lady helping me, she was able to find one last Burberry for Men set. There was no price, no way of ringing it up - but she was able to locate the skew number so I could purchase the item. She didn't give up and neither did I and I am appreciative for the help in finding the perfect gift. She also hooked me up on the cologne samples and told me about a Jack Black Men's Shaving product which I purchased for someone else. This Sephora is always poppin' because of it's location, that is a given. Although it was crowded, there were more than enough consultants to help everyone & I have to say, they were attentive. We swatched the heck out of all the lipsticks so those stations with the cotton & the make-up remover helped out a bunch! this wednesday as i was in the perfume aisle with my boyfriend, this worker came up asking if we're members. i had a feeling she thought we were stealing bc of her tone. i replied yes and then ignored her but stayed in the aisle. i had the mini prada set in my hand (i was going to buy it) and went to the front. i then opened it but ultimately decided it wasn't worth it so i put it back (near the registers / the line where all the minis are) since that's where i had got it from. i went to the front of the store since i was looking at the glossier section and she goes, "are you going to pay for that or do you need a basket?" me and my boyfriend were both in shock as i'm the last person who would ever steal anything and replied that i had left it and wasn't stealing. she asked me where, i told her and we left so idk if she went to check but i wouldn't be surprised. horrible customer service. it's an older woman who's literally a person of color ... you'd think she'd think twice about it . the cashier didn't even look at me when i was right in front of him so for her to be on me especially since she's also a poc was bizarre to me. also the fact that they have security and people who actually specialize in loss prevention. like do YOUR job do better grandma. anyways i will definitely be contacting corporate bc it's unacceptable. read more

I came here for the first time during Memorial Day Weekend and saw a product that was Limited Edition and didn't purchase the same date. I returned here for the July 4th weekend and attempted to put the same product on hold because I could not purchase this product over the phone despite being out of the area due to a security/fraud protection, which is understandable, so I attempted to speak with a Manager to put this on an extended hold. After a lengthy discussion, they still said no and I had to call Corporate because this item was available no where within Sephora or even in other retail stores. Fortunately, I reached Daniel, a Team Leader Specialist who stated he would do his absolute best to extend my hold, which he was able to do. My friend and I came to pick up my product and our cashier was fabulous. We ended up spending close to $75 and being it was $71, I was less than $4 from a free Perk Facial. I tried on some Glam Glow and asked to use the sink to remove and wash the product. This white guy was extremely gracious and directed me to the sink when this black woman got all irate and crazy and stated that "Nobody can remove it, only her" and she was "going to call the Manager or Security". She butted in and did not smile, was not even part of our discussion or interaction, and just made herself interrupt and make the shopping experience horrible. Mind you, my 40th birthday is coming up. She treated me as if I didn't belong in the store and I found out her name is Dupeola and reported her to Corporate due to her rudeness, negative attitude, and treating me as if I were some criminal. Fortunately, the white guy offered to remove my mask off, which I am thankful for, because I did not want to deal with her. Being a Southern CA Sephora customer in the West LA area, trying to openly rebuild my loyalty with Sephora, has been a journey of perhaps close to 10 years now. I have experienced past bad experiences, but in the end, I have always loved how Sephora Sales Ladies treat me with respect, dignity, and have always been there for me when I was at my lowest points and now when I am going back to being successful. I have every intention of remaining loyal to Sephora because they are very gracious and treat me well and time and time again, they give me plenty of samples and are not stingy. Dupeola made me feel embarrassed when I came back and asked for 2 more samples more than the "3" rule. I overheard her saying "She knows the rule is 3". What is the big deal about 2 more samples? I wasn't going crazy and being ridiculous asking for 7 or 10, so she just always has this negative energy around her acting as if 1 or 2 more samples are a huge deal. Anyway, I LOVE Sephora. I am just quite frankly afraid to come back to the Powell location, even though it is close to all the major shops. I spoke with Customer Service and they have made it up to me, so I will give them another chance because 1 rotten apple or even a few rotten apples should not make me ruin my relationship with Sephora. Sephora overall is a fabulous and wonderful beauty company, which I plan to shop over and over again. They have earned their business with me and I plan on shopping here consistently and supporting them the way they have made me consistently beautiful, carrying products that NO other company will carry. Had a fabulous experience! I'm not a make-up person at all but I'm just starting to try it out now. Translation: I'm very inexperienced and am clueless about makeup. The person I worked with was Kate. She was really great and easy to talk to. I loved her! I was interested in eyeliner and lipstick. She helped put eyeliner on me and taught me how to apply it and answered the questions I had. She did the same for lipstick. She found a great match--my friends were raving about it. I bought both items and couldn't be happier. I'll need to practice using them before feeling confident enough to wear it out but this trip to Sephora was awesome. Thanks Kate for a great experience! Makeup isn't my thing, and I hardly ever get a pimple, so I didn't ever see a need to go into Sephora...but then, I met my wife. My wife who loves makeup, struggles with acne, and does her hair everyday. On one of our first dates, she took me to this store, and I felt overwhelmed. It made her happy though, so I sucked it up and kept tagging along with her. Now, whenever I tag along, I look for something new for me. Yes, you read that right...for me. I'm still not into makeup, but somehow, my hair has lost it's curl and needs help with the frizz. I buy lotions, body scrub, bath soaks, shampoo, hair care products, and perfume...and stuff for her, when she asks. Although this is probably the busiest Sephora I've ever visited, it's our neighborhood store and it's my favorite. It's still overwhelming, but it is almost always stocked with whatever you're looking (or not) for. The staff are very helpful, and gives great recommendations to help you find what you need. I have been here multiple times; the service is top notch, even on a Saturday. The two women who helped me were both fantastic. I needed help finding the right colors and learning to apply product around my eyes. Katrina found hypoallergenic product for my sensitive skin, and taught me how to apply it. I love how this location is so organized, is in the heart of prime shopping, big in size, and most of the staff here are bubbly, friendly, and are willing to help. On occasion, there are those that seem to frown on you, but I can let that slide since the overall service is far better than the service given at any MACY'S. Don't let the tag line fool you, "MACY'S, your fragrance destination" - I think SEPHORA has better collections. I especially love the VIB point accumulation program; shop more and earn more! I recently watched this documentary called "MANSOME", which explored the ways men "groom" themselves to be presentable. I wouldn't call myself a makeup junkie. Instead, I consider myself a minimalist when it comes to makeup. Powder foundation, concealer, and mascara will suffice. Contrary, employees at Sephora, and not just the ones at this location in particular, wear way too much makeup that it's a little scary sometimes. I've used Shiseido cleansers and moisturizers for as long as I can remember. I used to purchase them at Nordstrom, but since Sephora carries them and offers reward points for Beauty Insiders (B.I.) members, I've been buying them here instead. However, about two years ago, Sephora discontinued selling the Shiseido cleanser I use, so I've reverted back to Nordstrom for that purchase. For powder foundation, I used a Sephora brand mineral-based one. I've used it for over four years, and during that period, they've changed their packaging multiple times. It's very irritating trying to verify that I'm repurchasing the correct product. And finally, they discontinued it so I've switched over to bareMinerals. I would pass on the Sephora brand itself; it's been inconsistent with quality, packaging, etc. so many times that I'm fed up with it. However, the store is a heaven for makeup lovers that enjoy trying out new products. And because this store in particular is located in downtown, it gets pretty crowded and difficult trying to flag down an employee for help. Also, I never understood whether the bottom drawers that carry extra products are for customers or for employees to look through. Once, I looked through it myself and an employee was rude about it, telling me I should ask for help instead. This Sephora is the best one yet in Norcal! There are tons of brands, people and even a live DJ! The music was popping and the customer service is great! They also tend to carry more brands than other stores and more products within the brand than other stores. As most other Sephoras, they are pretty good about giving samples too so that's always a plus. I bought the Tonymoly and Dr. Jart face masks, which were about $7.50 each and got a bunch of free samples with them, so that was awesome! If you are into skincare and makep, this place is a must to stop by if you are in the area! Highly recommend! read more

This location can get busy at times because of its prime location, but you'll always be able to flag down a beauty advisor if you need help. If the store isn't busy, the staff will be sure to ask if you need any help and offer a basket if they see you struggling to hold all the items you have in your hand. Despite the high traffic at times, this location is still very clean and organized, with items in stock. The storefront windows are always decorated with the latest promo or seasonal decorations. The people here aren't experts at skin care products but are pretty good with the makeup. They can take care of their products a bit more from all the people touching them and stuff. While this Sephora is huge and fully stocked, it's usually more difficult to locate a salesperson with enough knowledge about a specific product or brand to satisfy me. I don't blame them; this store is extremely busy due to the location and always seem understaffed. The more makeup customers try on...the greater the chances they will purchase it. Sephora needs at least one makeup artist per aisle. Still, it's fun to browse and check out the newest products. Customer service has been awesome when I've been able to grab a salesperson's attention. Return policy is on par with that of Nordstrom. I once lost my receipt and they gave me store credit/exchange no questions asked. Despite all these pros, i still tend to shop at makeup counters to get the intimate one-on-one consultations and quick makeovers. A makeup artist with knowledge about one product/brand trumps another makeup artist that knows a little about alot. read more

I don't normally go to this location since there is a Sephora near where I live, but I happened to be in the city and swung in while I had some extra time as there was a perfume I wanted to try out. Their customer service here was excellent! Staff were very knowledgeable and introduced me to some new scents, as well as told me about a product called an Atomizer that they sell which can be used to transfer perfume from larger bottles into a convenient travel size. They also had samples of perfume ready to go, so I didn't have to wait long for them to prepare samples for me to take home. Thanks Sephora! read more

Aside from the things the salespeople obviously can't control like messy counters because of all the people and the homeless people who come in and touch everything, my one big issue was the way the salesperson lied and I hope this isn't something that Sephora is teaching their sales associates/beauty advisors to do. I'd heard heard raving reviews about Dr. Gross pads especially since we're coming up on winter and something about chemicals peels being good for the skin. There's 3 kinds apparently and I just wanted to know which one to try. One of the Sephora lady's in all black, Amanda, came over to me and advised me to start from the middle aka the "regular strength" variety, so I said "okay can I try that one?" And her response was "Oh. You want a sample..?" And looked at me for 30 seconds as if I was crazy..? And then went on for another 2 minutes about Sephora's 60 day return policy with proof of purchase and account history. Sure I could get my money back if I break out or have an allergic reaction but are you gonna give me my pre-broken out/allergic reaction skin back too? No. So I stared right back at her as she clearly tried to stare-pressure me into buying this huge $88 Commitment. I asked for 2 sample packets which I know they have because from the youtube review I watched, that's how the girl first tried them! Also, I already had $90 worth of cosmetics/hair stuff in my shopping cart, so it's not like I just came in like some 12 yo teeny bopper wanting samples of everything. I wanted advice, and instead I was getting pressured to spend $88 on a product I'm not sure of. Return policy or not, I didn't not enjoy Amanda's method of selling. Then when I went to the line, I saw a 5-pack $16 dr gross pad week trial pack which is LITERALLY WHAT I ASKED FOR. I asked if she could give me 2 samples so I could either try the 2, in a week or use it once a week and see how my skin fares. And she said, "well you'll need a couple weeks so you should just get this and we have a 60 day return policy". I also noticed that she wore a different outfit than the regular red and black dress, hers was all black. I'm assuming she's a manager. Way to set the standard Amanda. Is this how you teach your salespeople to sell? To lie? If you're going to lie and say you don't have any samples or other sizes then at least make sure it's 1) true, or 2) that everyone else is going to say the same thing. Or how about: just not lie period and tell me that there's a trial/to-go version with 5 packets? Didn't appreciate the experience and dishonesty. We all know that Sephora is pricey, but one thing that they excel in over other beauty stores is their knowledgeable sales staff. I personally have very little knowledge when it comes to makeup. I went into their busy SF Powell Street location half expecting to not get much help since that store is always packed with customers. About ten minutes in they were able to match me with a somewhat newer sales associate who was very attentive despite the chaos going on around us. In about 20 minutes she was able to color match several foundations and create 3 samples for me to take home to make sure I didn't have any adverse reactions to them (I have sensitive skin). She even created a primer sample for me to bring home even though I didn't request it! While I was still being helped there were announcements stating that they had a beauty class on concealing and color correcting that would be starting shortly. I asked the person I was working with if I could attend the class even though she wasn't finished making the samples. I was able to attend the class and get the samples hand delivered when she was done. The class was also fun and informative for someone who doesn't have much experience with makeup. I am not able to visit a Sephora store in person often. When I do go, I purchase several products that I'm interested in trying with the reassurance that if a product doesn't work for me or in this case I'm allergic to it, I can return it during my next visit. The policy has been updated to no store credit past 60 days. I am frustrated because I only visit every couple of months and have received credit during past visits for products that didn't work for me. I understand if the products were obviously completely used, but they're almost brand new! To top that off when I told them I was allergic to this product and I don't have the chance to visit the shop often I was transferred to another employee as other associates continue to say NEXT, NEXT. You're just an easily replaceable, meaningless piece of cash. This product turned my eyes blood shot and caused painful irritation which luckily was resolved by flushing my eyes out with water and simply not using the product. What can I say we live in a capitalist society where if their product causes you to become blind they'll still turn a blind eye because they already got what they wanted, your money. This is just a PSA so nobody else has to waste hours of their day to just be turned away. read more

It would have been 5 stars, but I had to minus 2 for the the lady who gave me crappy service. I was looking for a particular lipgloss and she was too lazy and unwilling to check the drawers for me. She passed me to someone else, who then checked and told me there was none. And sephora has a policy where if they don't have something they'll ship it to u for free, they use to have the sign up but now they try to hide the sign. So I asked them to do that, they were too lazy and passed me to another person......the whole experience was a pain in the butt! I love the store, and most of the time the sales people are nice, I don't know what was wrong with those ones! read more

This is the first (and so far the only) Sephora I've been in and I do enjoy going here to decompress during a hectic and crazy work day. It's always busy but I find it's not difficult to navigate around and you don't feel overwhelmed by people. There's always a sales rep near the door who greets you and offers you a bucket/basket for putting your potential purchases in. There is a *huge* range of cosmetics in this store. Pretty much anything you're looking for, you can find. Maybe not in the brand you want, but it'll be here somewhere. I find the quality is definitely on the higher end, this isn't a place to go if you want cheap Cover Girl style makeup (go to Walgreens for that), but if you don't mind spending a extra, go through the selection here and you will not be disappointed. They also have a club/discount card so the more you shop here, the better discounts you get on future purchases. I don't shop here as much as I'd like mainly because I'm heavily biased towards MAC Cosmetics (which they don't carry) and I'm kind of reaching the critical limit of "too much makeup" but I like to go here when searching for something a bit more off-the-wall. read more

The staff in this location is very rude and untrained. They never smile and seems unhappy. A blonde saleswoman seems like a senior staff here. I wanted to buy a perfume here and asked her for some help. She answered very very short without smile, moved slowly and treated me oddly. I love getting my make-up done here. Anthony is by far my fav but I have come across other talented artists as well. This time Allie was my artist and did a very good job. Well everytime I come the artist does a very good job so it keeps me coming back. Sometimes I just need a pick me up and will book an appointment to stop by during my lunch and return to work looking fab.I love all of the different brands of products they offer so you can try each one and find the best fit for you and your skin. I also love that they provide samples so if you are unsure about making a purchase you can give it a try before you buy. Talk about rude and short! Called the store to schedule a makeup session for my wife and asked to speak to the store manager, the young lady answering the phone (not mentioning her name out of respect) asked for my name and "Whats your concern?" When I asked if she was a manager she replied "No but I need to know to transfer the call" I asked once again to speak to the manager and she hung up on me. Ridiculous people answering the phone and blocking calls. We have been loyal customers for years but with the recent experiences in NoCal I'm questioning if I want to continue doing business with Sephora. This Sephora has EVERYTHING! It is also well staffed and very clean. The two items I wanted, which were sold out online, I found here! I received help from Nola and she was so warm and friendly, I really appreciate her help! I deducted 1 star because there was one other associate who was rude and off putting, and I won't mention her name. But she marginalized me as if I were a thief-- basically every item I picked up she picked from my hand and read the label allowed as if i were a child. I've come across careless, annoyed, ditzy, and frustrated people in retail... who hasn't? But she was just plain rude. read more

What you should know about Sephora's damage good return policy. I made a purchase while on vacation at a Sephora Corporate store. After driving home, I opened the eye shadow kit to find one of the eye shadows in the pallet had disintegrated and mixed with all of the other colors. I went the following day to a JC Penney Sephora - they informed me that they cannot take returns from a Sephora Corp store, and I should call Corporate. I called Corporate, and they informed me that they cannot take returns unless it was an on-line purchase and I should go back to the store where I purchased it. OK, so now Corp will do nothing, local Sephora will do nothing!! $164 I spent at Sephora. They told me I had to go back to a Sephora store to return because their systems would not allow them to replace my defective product - OK I am going to drive 4 hours to and another 4 hours back home to return something that they sold me that was damaged. VERY, VERY POOR CUSTOMER SERVICE. You have many choices of where to purchase makeup products. Customer service is more important than a pretty store front - and for me, I am looking for customer service. I have made up my mind, I will buy from will buy from AMAZON where they accept returns for damaged products before I would ever shop at any Sephora again. I have no complaints about the service at the store - THIS IS ALL CORPORATE CUSTOMER SERVICE - OR SHOULD I SAY THE LACK OF. read more

All the employees at this store were so kind and helpful. I was color matched by Michael and I can say that I have never had someone take so much time to make sure I had the right color and best product for my skin. He also gave me some tips for application. I seriously could go on and on about how amazing my experience was with Michael. The staff here have been so lovely to me, everytime I come in im asking about products & bothering people that work here and they are absolutely gorgeous, savvy, bubbly, friendly and sparkling! I think that these qualities especially set the Powell steet Location apart from the other 2 in SF & the Staff here are prepared not only to take on all of the tourists that walk in but the returning customers such as myself that work downtown and in the Financial District. They are delightful & please me to bits!!!! I always leave here well chuffed, smiling, and feeling much prettier than I did when I walked in to begin with! I absolutely love Sephora simply cos you get to come in & browse around & sample products that you otherwise couldn't do in department shops. I love the Music that they play and it is very appropriate for the experience. I come here particularly for their hair care products, primers, eye care, skin care, and all of the amazing lines of products sold. They have all sorts of fabulous stuff here from kits to packages to special promos & if you sign up for a Sephora Card you get benefits as well! For the holidays they have all the perfect gifts that make wonderful stocking stuffers. Great grab & go products by the check out queue. They have the best makeup, perfumes, and I love how the staff all wear fabulous makeup and are all in black with red touches. There are some incredibly stylish boys that work there as well. Staff are knowledgeable & if they don't know the answer they will help you find someone that does. I like the security wondering around as well cos they keep the serious shoppers safe & keep the store in line for people wondering in that ought not belong. Sephora is all glamour & style even though its a bit pricey (actually quite Reasonable to be honest) & high end it is the best! I'll prob never shop in department stores again after experience Sephora. Get signed up for a Sephora card as well to receive discounts, special offers, and more. I go to this location a lot and it's really a hit or miss with the staff. Some are really attentive and helpful, others are CLUELESS and the opposite of good customer service. In fact, one time an employee behind the counter didn't bother to say hi, didn't ask if I had a rewards account, didn't ask if I was able to find everything I needed, didn't look me in the eye, didn't say thank you or ANYTHING. I don't think the employee even said the total out loud to me. I remember I had to be assertive and ask, "Do you need my number or email for the rewards?" Jeez, I've had a more pleasant experience glaring at a wall. If this doesn't already happen, I hope the manager of this store trains their employees on good costumer service. Again, not all of their employees are like this, but there are a handful treating customers badly. read more
