Unfortunately I did not review the bill at the and wanted to leave as Upon reviewing my bill I found that other than automatically charging 20% tip, the amount of the tax was calculated on the total check including the tax. I understand that if there is a large party and the tip is pre arranged, that is the law to charge sales tax on the tip also, but 4 people does not qualify under the tax law for banquet. read more

Went twice in one week because it's that good! Under new ownership this sushi place is one of the best in the area. Orinda really needs more great places to eat and we can now add this to the list! Hadn't been to Serika in over a decade but heard through the grapevine that it was under new ownership. I'm delighted to say that the sushi was excellent. Very high quality fish, skillfully prepared. Just tried this place tonight based on hearing that there was a new chef that took over. Can't speak for the sushi, since my tastes align more with toddlers, but the other food is legit! I have been craving tempura, and I really liked it here. The chicken karaage and gyoza were also super good. Tried to come here on a Tuesday night (so you'd assume it wouldn't be terribly busy) around 5:45 pm and the place was busy--which was a good sign! The poor server was solo and after sitting for 30 minutes (waited 10 for a friend and then 20 we sat talking and waiting) we never had our orders taken or were even told "I'll be right with you". Really sad that we had to leave since Orinda doesn't have a lot going on, but the wait was just too long. Another thing to note, the menus and tables were SO sticky, very uncomfortable. Had lunch with a friend here. She ordered the salmon special. The portion size was humongous. Probably well over half pound it came with salad and miso soup and huge portion of grilled veggies and a bowl of rice. A fabulous deal. I ordered the tempura lunch. 2 pieces of shrimp and a generous amount of tempura veggies. The batter wasn't as crispy as I like it. I would like to try the soups the next time. Went in for a quick dinner with friends on a blistering hot Saturday evening. We were greeted with smiles and served ice cold water as soon as we were sat. The simple yet extensive selection of meals, rolls, and nigiri/sashimi options had is discussing what we wanted to share, and we ended up getting the Dragon, Lion King, Fuji, and Crispy California rolls. All were delicious but my personal favorite was the Fuji roll! Such a nice environment with music and well lit dining areas, and the service was exceptional. read more

When I got to the register, she said they were too busy to take my order. There were four tables with customers. I probably could have handled it better at the time but it was a bit ridiculous. Met up with a friend to pick up our World Series Champion San Francisco Giants season tickets and have lunch at Barbacoa the Mexican place in the Orinda Theater Center. BUT, they are closed and did not open for lunch, so we settled for Serika. We were seated right away and given the lunch menu. Hot Sake and tea came right after we ordered the Nabeyaki Udon and the New York Steak/ Tempura/ California Roll Bento. The Nabeyaki Udon came with Tempura on the side but, the soup was very salty. The Bento box was good and the tempura was fried just right. The restaurant was bout 1/4 full through out lunch. The service was OK, no refills of water or tea. Total for lunch $24. read more

The chef told us he comes to Orinda after being a chef at a high class SF sushi restaurant. Came with a party of 7, 4 adults and 3 kids. We were able to be seated at the bar, in front of the sushi chef, in about 10 mins. The restaurant seemed to be quite busy and the sushi chef was at it non stop! Very impressive!! First time here and the food, sushi, udon, sides, were all very good. I'm not a sushi person but tried a few pieces of rolls our group ordered and they were good! I had the udon and though the portion looked small, I was very full by the end of the meal. Apparently also under new management and from what I hear, it's been only great things since. Would definitely be back to try other things! read more

We are fairly picky about sushi and this is a welcome addition to Orinda - fish is very fresh, prices are reasonable and location in the Village is great. My wife and I went back in two days in a row and are hopeful the word gets out around supporting the place. Every dish we've had from hot apps, to udon to sushi/sashimi have been excellent. I don't know why Serika gets rated lower than a 4. Tonight we wanted to celebrate a big personal event and I decided to pick up the lady in Orinda to shorten her commute time. We both like Serika so we stopped by. So feeling a bit spendy, we ordered a hamachi collar and a sushi platter. We were reminded how big the hamachi collar is when it came out. Easily double the size of the collar than most other places. Service was excellent and not over bearing. Their green tea is good too and piping hot. read more

This really should be a TWO star review - I will give the place one more chance because 1st two visit were good. Third visit was another story. I like that for dinner they give you hot towels prior to eating. Nice. I wish the staff was just as inviting. Their miso soup is excellent. I had amaebi here 3 times. Heads were very good except for last visit - slightly gamy. The tails are both good and forgettable. I usually order sushi and sashimi. Nothing excellent but good as it is not super fresh. The Ikura is ok but third visit - wilted and slightly gamy - it did not pop in your mouth - you had to chew it. And then third visit I ordered Salmon Turo sashimi. Wow! The worst sashimi I have ever had. Ever. They served me a grey (seriously no pink or orange color) slimy gamy cuts, marinaded, in I do not know what. And marinaded most likely so they did not have to throw it out. Alarming. I so wish I took a photo. You know its hard to remember great meals. But bad meals - your brain remembers - part of self the preservation process. And this Toro was alarmingly gross. I just wont forget it. read more

I came to meet a good friend on a rainy Monday night. Our first choice was closed and she suggested this restaurant that was also in this square. Monday was a quiet day for the restaurant but that just meant we had the servers undivided attention. I ordered the 2 item Bento box with shrimp and vegetable tempura and sashimi (got 4 pieces of tuna). I forgot to take a photo of it but it was so generous with tempura (I want to say at least 2 shrimp, 3 onions, 3 pumpkin, 3 sweet potato, 3 green beans, 2 broccoli - it was like two orders). My eyes bugged out when the server delivered it to me. I loved tempura. My girlfriend ordered the tempura udon and it was humongous and she had to take home leftovers. We each paid about $23 with tax and tip for our meals. Totally worth it. Service was great and my water was refilled constantly because I'm part camel. Will definitely come back. read more

We will be back to this restaurant!We had not eaten here in years, but decided to try it again because recently my husband spotted hamachi kama on the menu. He says "suppose to be the best part of the fish. Sometimes it is so popular you have to call in advance to reserve it! " We were so lucky it was available. He loved it and enjoyed how it was cooked perfectly. I had the chicken Tonkotsu and I totally enjoyed that. Chicken was so tender, not tough or dried out like other places and the breading had the right crisp to it. Both entrees were served with a small triangle of rice and a salad. I think the one suggestion I would make on these entrees is to include a larger serving of rice. I think we could have eaten 2 or three of the little triangles. We also enjoyed the vibe and the decor of the place. We recently returned from Japan and the decorations reminded me of my trip there. Service was great and friendly.
