This place replaced Little Dipper which unfortunately closed down due to covid. That was my FAVORITE shabu spot and was known for its beef bone broth. Years later, Shabu King finally opened their doors and I hoped it would be just as good as Little Dipper. Similar to Little Dipper, your hotpot is individually served. They have 5 broths to choose from - our table ordered the Original and Tonkatsu. The Original was ok; not what I expected - a bit on the sweet side. The Tonkatus was a better choice. You had a choice of 5 meats - all were great; were fresh and thinly sliced. Then you go to the bar and choose your veggies, seafood, and noodles. You also make your sauce. I love that they offer Kimchi and Tteokboki. Overall, the restaurant is clean, food is organized, but the service is lackluster. There are a lot of shabu restaurants nearby. I wouldn't say this was a top choice. I've had better broths; this spot didn't win me over but I might give it a 2nd try. read more

Went here with the wife and kids to satisfy a serious shabu-shabu craving. It's about time a QUALITY shabu spot touched down in the East Bay! The interior: the place is very clean, well-lit, and cutely decorated. The soju wall reminds me of the pochas scattered throughout Seoul when I studied abroad there. The service: the waitstaff was attentive, friendly, and patient with my rambunctious 4-year-old (sorry for spilling). Even though a soft launch is meant to iron out some kinks in the system, the front and back of house already operates like a well-oiled machine. They even tossed in free soft drinks for everyone to promote their soft launch. In this digital age, where everything costs something, that sliver of hospitality made a lasting impression. The food: INSANELY premium - you just can't get meat quality like that eating at home. I kept going for the short rib and prime ribeye. The marbling was exquisite, and was cut paper thin - just how I like it! My wife has a penchant for pork, and together we had to have crushed at least 4 plates of the black pork belly, no sweat. Breylon (my youngest) was obsessed with the nacho cheese fries and the tteokbokki. Mom and dad plead guilty for having more than our fair share of both, too...fun for the whole family! The kicker is that all of this comes at a VERY reasonable $29 per person for the premium menu ($17 for each of the kids). Prices like that in the bay area can't be beat. Honestly, between the food eaten and the dry cleaning for that poor waitress (sorry again!) they might have lost money on us. We happened to be shopping at the nearby outlets and Shabu King had a flyer posted. Reviews were favorable so we decided to give it a try. Based on the flyer, we thought it was related to the nearby Korean BBQ, which it may be, but the food didn't resemble anything Korean except for the condiment bar including Kimchee. In any case, Shabu Shabu isn't really a Korean thing. They offered several broth options, I went with the classic and my wife did the spicy miso. Both were ok, but bland. The selection of condiments was decent, with an assortment of veggies, fish, shrimp and sauces. We loaded the broth up with peppers and pepper sauce from the condiment bar and that helped give it some taste. The meat selection included various beef cuts, pork and lamb. They were generally ok. We noticed the quality of the meat servings declined after the first order. For example, our second order of brisket was frozen and ended up being chewy once cooked. Service was ok, our waitress lacked in social skills being she was abrupt and generally unfriendly. The other server we worked with, a young man, was pleasant enough however. All in all it was ok. The bill made for a bad conclusion. The flyer we brought with us indicated dinner was $28.99 each person, the menu had a price of $29.99. We asked the waitress if they would honor the flyer pricing. She said no, but would give us $1 off our bill. It's a small thing, but why not just honor your advertised price? It's only a two dollar difference for the two meals. I guess it was nice they gave us $1 off, but if we really wanted to push it they advertised a price that was less than they charged and they should have lived up to it. We didn't bother to haggle over a dollar, but it set a bad tone. Silly stuff like this kills restaurants (to be fare, but picky stuff like this kills most businesses), but I guess they will have to learn that lesson themselves. I don't see us returning. read more

I was so happy to learn that there was another hot pot spot in town and I was not disappointed! We were greeted as we walked in and seated right away. There are menus posted in your seating area. A server can to our table to ask us what broth we wanted and what kind of meats we wanted to order. It is individual hot pot style. We ordered the Tonkatsu broth and all the beef cuts on the menu. The broth was delicious and flavorful and not too salty. All of the beef cuts were fresh and served in stackable black trays which really helps when your table gets full of ingredients. We started off with ordering 3 meats first since we didn't know how the serving size would be. They came with 3-6 pieces each so we ended up ordering more. All of the ingredients at the self serve bar were thoughtfully laid out and fresh! They have a lot of different selections, you'll find yourself filling up multiple plates. The sauce bar was top notch with everything you could thing of. The only thing that might have been missing was a spicy sate. We decided on the premium menu since i preferred the cuts of meat on the premium menu and i wanted the chicken wings and shrimp tempura. Was craving hotpot and decided to try it for dinner. Really liked that each person gets their own broth and they leave a pitcher of water for the table so you don't have to keep asking. Definitely very clean and even the self-serve bar was clean. There was a variety of seafood, veggies, and noodles. I also liked the large options for the sauce bar. I love this place! Lunch price is so worth it, all you can eat buffet and every time I go here the buffet looks so amazingly fresh. The restaurant itself too looks so clean and open! The sauce area too has to many different things to mix together, and raw eggs which is great to have the yolk or to even cook in your soup. I love the garlic chili personally. I am so glad there are more HP options in the neighborhood! I tried the spicy miso broth, it was so delicious and light. It wasn't oversalted which is always a delight. The meat quality was very good for AYCE. They have a good selection of veggies. Definitely think the sauce bar needs more work....need a chili garlic, saté, or some kind of chili sauce. The most surprising item was the radish salad with jalapenos (picture attached). It was sooooo addicting and perfectly refreshing in between hot pot bites. I ate two scoops. Nice value and plenty of meat and vegetable, etc. selections; we came at dinner time with a large party, not the best place for this as you cannot sit together, and even worse, there's only ONE way in or out of the table, where we sat against the far wall, so unless you all go back for refills at the same time, a major inconvenience and disruption to your dining. It's probably much better for smaller parties of 4 or less, and to save a few $$$'s and come for lunch, because...I'm not a trained butcher and cannot tell one cut of raw beef, from another....there are TOO many options, so ideally, you should just order one or two of your favs, otherwise, they literally all look and taste the same to ME, once fully cooked...!!! This place shocked me! For 19.99 all you can eat Shabu lunch price is super unbeatable. A chipotle bowl is damn near $20 now and with the lunch rate it is super worth it. The quality of the meat is actually pretty good as well I recommend the top blade meat as it is tasty. I opted for the original broth and there is a veggie station / sauce section where it's buffet style where you can get whatever you want .
