I heard great things about this restaurant and was very excited to try it! The views and service were both great, but I have to give 2 stars because the food I tried was extremely subpar. The fried calamari was barely breaded, and just so painfully mediocre. The crab cakes had a beautiful presentation but were bland and small. I accidentally ordered a whole lobster- it's not for me but the mashed potatoes were good. I recommend coming here for the views and aesthetic but not if you want delicious food. read more

Quite the View. Shadows on the Husdon is definitely the spot to see for a large party event, with a very large bar area, plenty of table space indoors, and a gorgeous view over the Hudson on their large back deck that wraps around the corner with a second bar outdoors with beautiful views. We ended up going with a 30+ party size group, so it was a small prix fixe menu to keep things simple, so I didn't get to sample a lot from the menu, but what they did serve was delicious. We did have time to sit at the bar for a bit as well and tried a unique platter of the Buffalo Calamari, something I wasn't sure on but as I had never heard of it before, had to give it a try and was not disappointed. Service at the tables was great, but the service behind the bar was a little slow and there wasn't a large crowd at the bar, though we did sit away from other groups to the tap side, so maybe the walk to check-in was a bit much. All and all, it's a stunning location and something to try if you can get outside on a good weather evening, especially around sunset. read more

I attended a surprise birthday dinner last night. There was a set menu. I chose the steak with roasted potatoes and string beans. The steak was juicy and tender. The potatoes were seasoned perfectly as well as the string beans. Prior, there was a table with assorted appetizers including pita bread with spinach dip, assorted cheeses with crackers, assorted ham and salami with olives. The service was excellent. Always polite and courteous. Great place for special occasions. The ambiance was soothing and pretty. The view of the bridge was amazing. I hope to revisit when it is warmer so I can seat outdoors. By far best dining experience to date. Food was so delicious made to perfection. We had the three tier Maine lobster entree and it was best lobster I have ever eaten. The muscles were made perfectly and the raw clams and oysters were clean delicious a fresh. Thomas C the waiter was a great waiter and gave us impeccable service . Knew the menu very well and had great suggestions . The creek brûlée was best we have ever eaten. I couldn't believe how everything came out better than the rest . Going to give this place two stars. You can judge for yourselves. I wanted to celebrate my birthday with about 20 friends and have the regular Sunday Brunch there. I called to attempt to make a reservation a month in advance. I was told that parties over 15 had to go through catering. Catering reached out and I and was offered all sorts of catering menus. I explained that I simply wanted to come to Brunch that day with my friends and wanted to reserve some tables so we could sit together. I was told no, but if I wanted a catering event they could help me. I called and asked to speak to a manager to discuss it which I was refused and instead given to the person who had turned me down in the first place. I once again explained that I had a party of 20 and wanted to have regular brunch. I also stated that I understood how busy that day could be and was more than willing to leave a deposit in good faith to reserve a table I was told a firm No a final time. Not even a 'come by with your group and we will do our best to seat you together' or 'maybe another weekend' just no. Bear in mind my friend did the exact same thing a few months ago that I am asking for and was accommodated but for some reason my answer was no. The food is excellent as is the wait staff. The current management has really left a bad taste in my mouth. I guess if your having a wedding or some big expensive catering event, they will welcome your business but if you just want to celebrate a birthday with your friends at brunch, that it seems, is too much to ask for. read more

Ambiance is beautiful however, The food is okay, nothing great, they made a mistake on a very simple order, they brought me fried chicken instead of grilled, and I speak loud and clear, not sure how it got screwed up?! The service was a bit rushed but there were so many people that it was not too noticeable. They need to fix the outdoor fans as the temperature on the balcony started to rise without the fans. I'm reviewing the event side of the venue. While the venue was beautiful, the food was good, and the waitstaff was helpful, the total lack of disorganization for my daughter's bridal shower was disheartening. I would never recommend booking an event here. At best, I'm speaking to whoever is top manager. Your event planners need training and inservice. We were told that we were not guaranteed more than 15 minutes to set up. I went into the shower planning knowing this full well. We DID arrive a half hour early in hopes we could set up. We could not so we waited at a table. However, even as our 15 minutes of set up time crept up, it was clear that guests were still being seated in our area. No tables were set up. No tablecloths. We could not move forward with decorations. No one greeted me, the hostess, upon arrival. No one said, "Hi, are you Gail? We've been corresponding. Let's go over the protocol. You can serve yourselves at the buffet anytime. It closes at xxx. Since you opted for the Bloody Mary/Mimosa package for your guests, a member of our waitstaff will be coming around to take drink orders. If there's anything you need, please don't hesitate to reach out." That's what I would have done. Instead, we were moving our own tables and putting tablecloths on in order to hasten an already late start. Our party got started late. Guests were confused. We were pushed out so dinner could be set up, meaning we did not get the full time promised by contract. Instead I had to ask to speak to someone in charge. With guests confused and waiting, I had to ask how we were served our paid for drinks. I had to ask the process for the buffet. I had to search out a manager to ask about the cake cutting protocol. I spent the time I should have been seeing friends and relatives and enjoying my daughter's special day, doing the job of management. Someone mentioned to my daughter that the tables not being set was because I had not designated the set up. Not true and I have emails saying so. A couple of days before the event, the venue manager reached out to ask. We emailed back and forth as I did not know the venue. They suggested a "barbell" configuration. I did not want that. It makes it too difficult for guests to circulate and move around, as is expected at a bridal shower. We discussed options. I left it as, knowing we have 42 guests coming, mix up the tables with larger and smaller. A very nice gentleman, I assume a manager of some sort, did his best to rectify the situation. However, at that point, with a late start, confused guests, and a sweaty host, I was just ready to call it a day. I would never book an event here with any expectation of assistance or organization. read more

I loved my experience at Shadows the last time I went I had the pleasure of dining during happy hour in the outside seating which provides a beautiful view. The food was great and the options changed almost all the time but we still had some staples like the calamari tacos, which were delicious. I loved the drinks as well, the drink special they had when I went was this sangria which was perfectly balanced and was recommended by our wonderful server who was attentive and made sure to even provide us with a dessert recommendation which we took excitedly and it was amazing! Overall a great experience and I will be returning sooner rather than later. read more

Had brunch today with dear friends. It was my first time and I enjoyed it immensely. What was even better than the food (and that was excellent) was the manager Emmanuel. He checked in at our table (and others of course) twice to see if we were satisfied and happy. Rarely do I see this anywhere in this day and age and it was so nice to have happen, especially since we were celebrating a birthday. Thank you Emmanuel! Tonight's impromptu wedding anniversary dinner was made extra special by the tremendous service and delicious meals we enjoyed (Grilled Boneless Pork Chops and Seared Bronzino)! So disappointing- My husband order gnocchi and had to send it back...it tasted like fish. I ordered a filet mignon, it was tender but mushy and way over salted. August 5th, 2023, was our first time at Shadow on The Hudson and probably our last All started out well, but right after appetizers it went downhill. 1 1/2 hours for dinner to come after appetizers were delivered. Food was warm but NOT hot. Salmon was way overcooked, portion was about the size you buy at a grocery store, certainly not what you would expect at a high end restuarant Coffee came, that was warm NOT hot. We asked for the manager who did come over when the dinners finally arrived, we all explained what was happening, he did apology and said he would stop back to see how it all tasted. I have to say, beginning with Casey whom I worked with to set up this event, the experience was excellent! We brought a bus load (24... small bus) of people for a 3:00 reservation. Everything was Ready, The tables were set up together, the waitstaff were right there to take the orders. The food came out relatively quick and was delicious! I don't recall the waiters name (He was very helpful with everything), but Autumn took care of our table for the most part. I made reservations for dinner at Shadows, but my wife was concerned because others had not reviewed the restaurant kindly. We went ahead with plans and could not have been happier. We were seated at the rail of the deck overlooking the Hudson River, just as we'd hoped. Cocktails were delicious and the charcuterie board on the Specials menu was very generous and good. My NY strip was delicious as was my wife's streamed Maine lobster. Both came with tasty garlic mashed potatoes and green beans. The wine list is extensive. We enjoyed a very good and reasonably priced Russian River Valley Pinot Noir. Topped everything off with the S'Mores Sundae... just delightful. This is the only place like this in the Poughkeepsie area.It's not 5 stars like Inn at Pound Ridge. The food is not quite as innovative but it's truly excellent. Burratta burger had a lightly fried onion (like a ring but not), a tomato jam. It was mind-blowingly great. They change the menu every season so there's not much point in describing things in detail as it's going to change. The bread is delicious and the portions large. Views are great from the side tables. The service is friendly and detailed without being hover-y. If you're used to NYC prices on wine by the glass, you will be pleasantly surprised both by the price and pour. The desserts are decadent but we were too full. read more

We were so excited to see Shadows had restarted their happy hour and the return of $1 oysters. What a disappointment as my son was home so we took the family for happy hour. The service at the bar is horrible. They are either understaffed or just grossly inefficient. 3 of us at the bar waiting for 2 others to show waited 10 minutes to be asked what we would like then another 10 minutes to receive 2 beers and a wine. The beers were skunked. At least 2 of them were horrible and we both switched to wine. We ordered 2 dozen raw oysters and crab cakes which took about 20 minutes to come out. The crab cakes got delayed longer because we were brought beef kebabs instead of crabcakes just another mistake that night. The food at shadows is really good unfortunately I'm not sure I will return at least to the happy hour because of the lack of service. read more

The worst customer service experience this evening. My family had a reservation for dinner and when we arrived found that the event center next door was hosting a high school prom. There was literally no parking. Anywhere. When we called to ask what we should do, the hostess was very short and basically told us to park on the road...where there had just been an accident. If you're going to host a huge event, let the people who have reservations at the restaurant know that there might be parking issues. Disappointed! This was my second visit in one week and the tonight solidified that the only thing great about Shadows is the view. The first visit my salmon was disgustingly undercooked and I didn't send it back because the server was pleasant and I enjoyed the appetizer. I cooked it a little more when I got home. The food was just ok and overpriced. To make matters worse, tonight my husband and I went to celebrate our 5 year anniversary and although I notified them when I made the reservation they did not do anything special. I notified the hostess station and they notified the server. The server said we had to order a dessert so they can write happy anniversary on it. So, we ordered a dessert. When the dessert arrived there was nothing special about it; no happy anniversary written on it. The server walked past us three times and said nothing. After a while we just left and we passed the server on the way out and she said nothing - not even "have a great night." I told the hostess what happened and she only offered an "I'm sorry." The management did nothing to make it right. I even explained to them how we went to a different restaurant the night before and had nearly the exact thing happen (the server never acknowledged our anniversary). We were simply trying to recapture what we had hoped to experience the previous night. After hundreds of dollars and a disappointing dining experience, I thought they'd at least offer for us to come back and enjoy a dessert on the house. Had they done something to fix this, I wouldn't have come to leave a negative review. I give two stars for the pleasant server from the first view, the bread tower appetizer, and the beautiful view of the Hudson/ambience. read more

The best thing about shadows is the view. First cocktail at the bar while waiting for our table was excellent, the second (same cocktail) was light on the booze. Plus their prices are astronomical. The guy beside me at the bar said his two bud light seltzer's cost $20. The cocktails are $15+. The food was uninspired, lacked good seasoning and was also very much overpriced. There are a lot of better places to eat in town. Hopefully the waterfront gets some better options soon. read more
