After hearing quite a bit about their brunch decided to try it. Made a reservation , when we got there we were seated at a table next to the server station and when asked to move we were told there were no other tables available. That was not true there are plenty of tables available. Servers lacked interest or ambition. I think since it was a buffet they felt like there was less of a chance of them getting a tip.? The hostess seated us and then walked away never gave us any direction about what to do and where to go. The food was very good but the set up was very disorganized. The flow to get the food was awkward. At one point a waiter came over and asked if we needed anything? We didn't know what that meant! We asked for mimosas which they brought us but we were never told they were additional charge. Then we asked for coffee which they brought us and again no indication it was an additional charge. Hmmm. I'll start by saying I give this place 3 stars solely for the view (if you ask for the outdoor seating, you are wonderfully rewarded by the waterfront scenery and if you come at the right time, beautiful sunsets) and the value for the experience -- overall, it wasn't astronomically expensive but it IS pricey for Poughkeepsie in general. It appears to be a great place for catering (next door?) and has two small quasi-private rooms of contrasting decor (one was very lounge-y and the other was clean white themed) for hosting events. However, the food has been just ok the times I have been here, and I enjoy my experience because I only order the same dish over and over (the seared ahi tuna entree -- great portion size, delicious rice pilaf). And with no regrets because I try the other dishes and I'm not that impressed -- I've also tried a orechiette with chicken and truffle cream sauce that was a little too salty for my taste but ok, and a sauteed scallop dish with lemon caper sauce (again, too salty for my taste, portion size was small on this one and most of what was on the plate were the fried potatoes). The ahi tuna napoleon appetizer (fried wonton wrappers, ahi tuna seared, avocado, seaweed salad stacked up) is pretty good but the serving is small for four people. Service is mediocre -- the wait is fairly long on a Sunday evening (to be fair, we walked in without reservations) and when I asked for my dad's order of the Fra Diavolo pasta to be as un-spicy as possible, the waitress told us they could do that and it still came out spicy, which was not really enjoyable for my dad. Overall, it's a NICE restaurant in the Hudson Valley area, and if you are looking for a place for a special dinner that requires a nice atmosphere to make an impression, this might be it, but the food is not its forte. read more

I went there for happy hour with my wife and another couple three weeks ago. I was really hoping that we could enjoy their incredible views at the outside bar with a margarita. It was probably the worst margarita I've ever had. Two of us had ordered the margarita and we were both disappointed. It was a Friday night so they should have had their "A" team working. Came for a very special graduation lunch. I choose Shadows thinking it would make the occasion special. As always the views are beautiful,.. but today that was all there was. Service was fair, the food was crazy slow coming out. Nothing was good, it was all ok. Several had the lobster roll and didn't care for it. When I told her they didn't care for it. Our waitress said well they did eat some of it. They did, just enough to know it was just ok and not be hungry anymore. Since we waited so long for our food. I love a long dining experience, but we had no appetizers, just lunch and it took forever. Our fish tacos had very little fish and a lot of guacamole. I would give this two separate ratings depending on what you're coming here for: Rating for a nice meal here on the Hudson: 4 This place is an awesome place for a lunch date for even a business meeting, but mostly for lunch date. A lot of people come here to celebrate a wedding (the place next door does that), graduating, or whatever the special occasion is. The view is phenomenal of the Hudson River, the Mid-Hudson Bridge, and the mountains. Be sure to come dressed! Rating for the nightlife: 2-3 This place also does switch to a club setting on the weekends, specifically on Saturdays. The drinks are pretty much NYC price. The atmosphere is nice and they play typical club music which i have no problem with. The problem is that I don't think a lot of people know about this place so there is really never a big crowd which is too bad. Overall, come here for a romantic date on the Hudson, but not for the nightlife. read more

Being from the area I had been to shadows many many times before. But I had never been for brunch and it had been quite a few years since I've been there. But we had made reservations for brunch for my in-laws to meet my parents and my sister. The inside had been completely redone since the last time I was there and it looks absolutely beautiful. The brunch is outstanding and ginormous. I can't imagine anybody leaves hungry. They had everything from breakfast to lunch to dinner to dessert and more. Everything was fresh and hot and the line was never long. They had their pastry chef available to explain what each pastry is and what it was made of which for me is huge because I have food allergies. The staff was very attentive even though they had many parties and big groups. Brunch was probably the best I've had in the area and now I understand why I can never get a reservation for Mother's Day. I would definitely recommend their brunch to anyone in the area or visiting the area. But you have to make a reservation! read more

Was looking for a place to have brunch with views of the Hudson River. This restaurant did provide nice views but unfortunately that is where it ended. The food was at best banquet quality. There were sufficient choices but almost all were either just ok or not very good. Some examples: the beef was very inconsistent with some pieces pretty good and other pieces which we could not chew, chicken was dry, grouper was good. There was also the standard breakfast dishes which were your basic "standard breakfast dishes". Pretty much what you would see at IHOP or a diner. Other than the view the atmosphere was like a banquet hall. There are many much nicer places along the Hudson. This is a one and done place for us. If you are looking for a nice meal along the Hudson look elsewhere. read more

The servers were fine. The drinks were fine. The ambiance was fine. The food was awful. The manager discounted the bill, but frankly, the damage was done. Two guys, two filets; should be easy enough. But not here. First, the meat seemed an imperfect cut from the tenderloin. The filets tasted funny/off and looked grey; perhaps they had been over-salted prior to cooking. Finally, the medium order was delivered well-done and the medium-rare order was delivered medium-well. I have no problem with spending $44 per entree and more, but the meal needs to be great. I'm not interested in a discounted bill or a free dessert. In this case, I was interested in a couple of great steaks. I know now that I came to the wrong place. read more

I held an engagement lunch for about 30 people this past Saturday. Everything- beginning to end was amazing. We were in the west section that was semi private. Casey the catering manager was so responsive through the whole planning process and had an awesome set up for when we arrived (spacious, extra tables for decor, pretty cake). The servers, Katelyn and another nice guy, were just so pleasant. They kept our drinks filled and were flexible when our timing was off. Went there on a whim on a Thursday. Party of three, we got a late lunch that included lobster, steak, fish & chips and a cesar salad. First came the bread basket, which seemed microwaved and hard as a rock. We asked for another one, and we got a fresh baked, nicely done version. The salad seemed old and wilted, and was not fresh at all. The fries we substituted for the fish & chips were cold and old as well. I told the waitress about it, but she didn't do anything other than suggest getting a replacement. At this point, we were done with the place, so we said no. Lobster and steak were okay, but for the price we paid we expected a lot more. The bill came with full price. No discounts or apologies. Never going there again. Very disappointing. read more

I brought le girlfriend here for our three year anniversary. Neither of us have been here, but I came because of the reviews. The wait was long on a Friday evening. It was about 30 minutes so I suggest you make a reservation. Parking was hard to find. Luckily, we had a scenic view of the Hudson. We start with a plate of their buffalo calamari. It was great! Like no where else I've had it before. I believe I ordered the NY sirloin with mashed potatoes and she ordered the salmon with mashed potatoes. Both plates looked delicious and they were indeed. The service took a little long, but I believe that was because of how crowded it was. Definitely a place to go to for special occasions or just a night out with friends. The place has a nice view and it has a professional feel about it. From the hostess and wait staff to the decor. It is a very big restaurant with tables inside and outside. So the atmosphere gets a 10 from me. Our waitress was nice and she took good care of us so no complaint here. The drinks were very good so I do recommend you come here for the cocktails. The food is not that great. I ordered a chicken pomodoro and it was very bland and also overcooked which is very common, no one gets chicken right. This place was awful. I was so excited to try it, my friend had raved about it. By the time we left she was mortified. We went to the brunch buffet. We were sat quickly with our reservations. The sun was directly in our eyes which was annoying but we understood as the glass has no tint. The breakfast sausage wasn't cooked all the way. The fried chicken was slimy. Place has a wonderful atmosphere. Service was great. Our appetizers were delicious, especially the crab cakes. However our main entrees were rather bland. I had the fra diavolo, the seafood was very fresh but there was hardly any spice. My companion had some sort of chipotle chicken and there was barely any flavor--but his garlic fries were yum. Me and my boyfriend are visiting Poughkeepsie for a little small get away and came here on our first night and let me tell you.... food -amazing, it's all beautiful cooked, service- amazing, taste- jaw dropping. Just had dinner at this otherwise promising location on the Hudson just south of the mid-Hudson bridge. We had hoped to have a nice view of the river, arriving around 7 on a quiet Monday night. Inexplicably, the hostess seated us at a random table inside with no other diners in the area. Every other diner was seated within an enclosed outer area where the views are to be had. We assumed that there must be some large party arriving soon to occupy those tables. No party arrived and we remained the sole patrons within the inside portion of the restaurant. Clearly we should have complained but we were giving them the benefit of the doubt. The food was passable if over-priced. The burratta was good but it is a hard dish to mess up. The gnocchi was over-salted and lacking in complexity. When asking about straight-forward selections on the wine list, we found they were unavailable. In the end, it failed to live up to it's high marks and we don't plan to return. read more

Servers were attentive and did a great job of explaining options and providing recommendations. Every person we interacted with was super pleasant and a server we randomly met on the way out took the time to provide us with recommendations * The food: I ordered a Jamaican spice rum drink and Veggie burger while my lady ordered their signature burger and we both loved our food. The burgers were very flavorful and served on this great toasted brioche bread and the portion size left more than enough for us to take food home. We were very tempted by the Smores desert but ended up passing only because we were stuffed. We plan on trying during our next visit. * Ambiance: The restaurant has a beautiful lay-out and wonderful ambiance! Food is not worth the money--overpriced for what they are serving you. They are charging a premium for their location, which is not even that impressive on the river. Came for my 50th birthday with family. One of the top 5 restaurant i research on line. One month ago we went to the mill house and had a bad experience. Thought this would be different since the pics look good on line and reviews were good. The restaurant Devore was beautiful, the service was excellent but the some of the food was not worth on what they were charging. My suggestion just get a new chef or least have a consultant come in and fix the menu. Crab cakes really! Calamari chewy! Sweet potato croquettes had no flavor whatsoever and was dry. Short rib and scallop entree cam out cold!!! Very disappointing. Chef and managers are responsible for type of errors. It's an easy fix. My family and I went to this beautiful restaurant on the water for late dinner. It was 7 of us and a 8 month old baby My family are big supporters of this restaurant! We wanted to sit outside by the water but the waiter said we can't bc he did not have a table to accommodate us. And they could not put tables together. I was like wow ok. My expectations for this place was high now it's dwindling! My mom order a shot or remy martin , the waiter was like it's coming, he brought out everyone else drinks but not my moms. Then he came back like we just have to open a new bottle. Finally, like 15 mint later ,he came back and said we don't have it ! I'm like what the world u just said they was opening up a new bottle! We ordered appetizers and they were not good at all. A few of us ordered grill shrimp , my sister sent hers back. It was missing sauce, and it was bland. It was like the food was thrown on the plate. they have all been there b4 so we know how the dishes look & taste. Unfortunately my niece n my mom taste my grill shrimp so I couldn't sent it back! We ordered the garlic bread tower . we got a few pieces . Normally it's in a shape of a tower. Then we ask for bread like 3 times . The waiter comes back and say it was no more. He gave us some free garlic bread, however it came when the dinner was almost over. I ordered the shrimp bucatini, it was so dry, noodles was hard and real spicy. I wanted to send it back for something else but everyone reminded me that kitchen was closed. My mom also ordered the Black Sea bass to go he brought out a little piece of fish . That plate was for a kid. We sent that back. The guy waiter was not that helpful. I'm sorry my experience was not great . You know eating their cost a pretty penny! Really not impressed with the brunch on Sunday. Not many choices and the food was not good at all. The chicken was so dry and sour tasting. I went to get a waffle, no whipped cream or berries and it took a long time to get it. I understand it may have been busy but they need to plan for big crowds. I met up with my family here for a brunch on a Sunday morning. The server greeted us and provided us with coffee, tea, and took a couple omelet orders. He seemed friendly, but was pretty absent the rest of our stay. It didn't seem that busy, but we had to constantly flag someone down that was not our waiter to get coffee and water refills. Then when he did come back with coffee the pot was already empty. They offer a large buffet of a variety of brunch items, but as I found myself wondering around looking for the french toast and pancakes there were none. I scratched my head on this one. I mean how do you have a buffet like this and exclude two major breakfast items. The food was all just kind of blah and had that mass produced taste. The scrambled eggs were very runny and not all that enjoyable. The bacon just had an off taste to it and I couldn't finish what I took and for me not to finish my bacon that says something. The made to order omelets were decent as you could select a number of cheese, vegetables, and meats to add. The food quality has seemed to drop off here since when they first opened.
