I've heard all the hype about Shake Shack for a little while now. Only thing preventing me from trying it out up until now is the 2000+ mile distance between my home and the NY shacks (I heard there is one in Vegas but I'd rather go to where it began). Visited the Columbus St. location for lunch today. I ordered a double Smoke Shack and my wife ordered the regular Shack burger. We also got a regular order of fries and an order of cheese fries. The food is pretty darn legit. My Smoke Shack came with two parties, cheese, thick slices of Niman Ranch bacon, and a sweet and spicy pepper relish. Bueno. It did not include lettuce or tomatoes. Buenoer. Patties were juicy and flavorful; bacon was thick and chewy (don't like crispy bacon); relish added additional sauciness, acidity and spice that made for a pretty phenomenal burger. I really liked it. A lot. Can't give it 5 stars as it was a $10 burger a la cart. I realize this is New York and that there are more expensive burgers out there but I think value for the money especially at a fast casual joint is not on the high end despite how good it was. The cheese fries were good as well. Basically a combo cheddar and American cheese sauce poured over well seasoned crinkle cut fries that were fried crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. Even with 10-15 staff working hastily behind the counter, there is usually a line upwards of 30 minutes here. This place can get crowded easily especially since it is by the Museum of Natural History. Locals and tourists alike come here to feast on shake shack's famous burgers. If you're looking to sit and eat, don't expect to find seating here. However, you can always sit down after a short walk to the park across the street. Personally, I think shake shack is great and the food quality of this location is no different from the others I've been to. However, there's no reason to warrant a 30 minute wait for this fast food. That being said, if you do come, give the mushroom burger a try. It is definitely not your average burger. The shackburger is good but falls short when compared to the mushroom burger. Prices can range from $6-$14 depending what you order. Shake shack also serves beer, shakes, hotdogs, and of course, fries. The corn dog is a special thing, only available 3 times a year over holiday(Memorial Day, July 4th and Labor Day) w'ends(why SS why??!) My Minnesota roots required that I spend many a blisteringly-hot late-August day at the State fair with a corn dog in one hand and a bag of mini donuts in the other while standing in line for a shake at the dairy building, so when I can find a fresh and delicious CD here in NYC I will happily stand in line to get me some of that. And so I did the Friday before Memorial Day w' end to try SS's rendition of a childhood treat(thanks to Food Network's Best Thing I Ever Ate for cluing me in to this secret offering) and it was DELICIOUS! This is my second time trying Shake Shack and I must admit. I like Shake Shack better than In-N-Out. Only for burgers though. Shake Shack fries are much better than any other ordinary fast food chain fries, but compared to In-N-Out fries it's a bit oily and tastes less fresh. I have tried Shack burger at the Madison Square Park location and tried Smoke Shack at this location. I've heard rumors that the Madison Square Park location tastes better than other locations, but I feel it tastes the same. It is true that $6-$7 for a burger is not cheap, but I think it's worth to pay a little bit more for good quality flavorful burger once in a while. My favorite has to be Smoke Shack. Buttery bun with juicy beef patty, not too salty bacon (I'm really not a big fan of salty bacon) and spicy red pepper pieces. Those little pieces of spicy peppers go so well with the fatty taste and it tastes even better with mustard. This location is clean, pretty fast service and it's nice to sit by the window and enjoy people watching while munching on your burger. read more

Four stars for my FOURth Shack Shack experience! This is my fourth SS branch & fourth time enjoying Shake Shack. My usual go-to order is the single Shackburger, regular fries and a regular Half&Half. After a long day's work, I dragged K. to Shake shack for a quick dinner (8:30pm Monday, NO WAIT!). He does not know the popularity of this place so he wasn't very excited about this at first. .... everything changed when he bit into his burger... We ordered the shack burger and I swear.... his eyes started glowing and while he was biting into his burger and shoving the cheese fries in his mouth he was nodding his head up and down and at one point I almost saw his eyes roll back in his head! Yummy yum yum. I really enjoyed coming to the Shake Shack. From reading other people write about how amazing this place is, I decided that it seems to be the equivalent of In-and-Out in California, or Dicks if you're from Seattle, but I must say Shake Shack takes the burger. One thing that really sticks out is the potato buns that they use. The back of the bun is sealed together, so when you're eating your burger, none of it falls out the back end, which I think is really annoying with most burgers. I had the Shack Stack burger which included a fried portabella mushroom mushroom with a cheese burger patty on the bottom. The crispiness of the mushroom and the juiciness of the patty all swirled together for an amazing burger experience. I had the opportunity to try their strawberry blonde custard, which was amazing. It was so rich and creamy, I wish I could try the other flavors. I think the fires there were good, but anything that really blew me away, but I did like the fact that they were crinkle cut. I can't wait to come one more time before I leave NYC read more

The first time I herd about this place a local was telling me its a burger place with good milkshakes, and I was still on the fence about going till she said "Its better than In-n-outs" I was like "WHOA whoa! step back here! They have their own version of a secret sauce (i.e. thousand island dressing) that goes with the cheesy goodness The whole thing is greasy and messy to eat but SOOO worth the impending heart attack it will cause... The place is packed and it can be tough to grab an available seat, you need to pay attention to who might be leaving soon, and hover around them... okay it feels a bit creepy to do that, but its better than eating your food standing up. Shake Shack's just one of those things you gotta go to when you're in the city, even if your only reason is to be able to argue with West Coasters with the eternal In-n-Out vs. Shake Shack battle. I'm torn regarding Shake Shack, because I do love the burger. The potato bun, the meat patty, the cheese and the fresh vegetables all just melt into your mouth in soft, ooey greatness. The concretes and shakes (peanut butter!) are thick, true to flavor and creamy as well. I'm not a huge fan of the Stack, however, as I don't really like the mushroom patty. However, the price to pay is ridiculous. I'm not a big eater, and to spend $15-20 on fast food for MY average meal is insane. Warning: This place poses a major threat to any woman's diet! I ordered the Shack burger, cheese fries, and a lemonade. It was so much food that I didn't finish half the fries and lemonade! The burgers here are awesome! I ordered the shack burger with lettuce, tomatoes, pickles and onions. It was delicious! The meat was perfectly grilled (medium rare, still a little pink so it's tender) and the outside had a nice crisp. The veggies were fresh and the bun was baked/grilled so perfectly! The bun tasted slightly sweet and was warmed up on the grill, so it had this greasy-but-good flavor. The burger was delicious!!! The cheese fries were okay. I'm not the biggest cheese lover, but the first bite was good! The fries are fried a bit more crispy than I prefer. The cheese is just a lot to handle, so after the first few bites, it gets to be a little too much. The lemonade is the perfect blend of sweet and sour! I loved it! I've never been to Shake Shack, so of course we had to try the burgers. We opted for the Shack Stack because, why not. - Shack Stack: an ooey gooey cheeseburger on top of a potato bun with a portobello mushroom inside. I'm not crazy for mushrooms (as in, I don't dislike them, more that I don't mind them if they're in my food), but I can't get over how good the mushroom was! The mushroom was perfectly crispy and breaded... I could have ordered a few of those portobellos and just eaten them on their own. Don't get me wrong, the burger was delicious (not just considering it's a fast food joint!), but definitely try out the portobello mushroom as well. The waiting area was a little awkward but fortunately the wait wasn't that long. I decided to go with the basics my first time around. I ordered the shack stack and fries.
