We came for brunch so that's all I can speak to. But the food and service were both equal measures lacking for a restaurant in Seattle where you can get amazing brunch food anywhere. It is unreasonable to have a brunch not be able to deliver an edible shakshouka, not to mention the incredibly slow, ambivalent service. The shakshouka was small, lacking in anything resembling sauce, and worse yet, the egg became extra hardened/hard boiled from sitting in the tomato bake for too long (in part because it was left neglected on the counter as they waited for the server). The texture had hardened so much, the egg whites were the texture of rubber. My husband's breakfast sandwich was also generic and nothing special to warrant the insanely long wait. I don't understand how a place like this can stay open when the restaurant space is so competitive here. Go to Oddfellows instead if you want a good brunch - don't settle for this place. read more

After eating Chinese food for days on Vancouver, I wanted to take the wife and parents back to some Pacific Northwest seafood. Shaker and Spear turned up on Yelp and OpenTable and looked to be an interesting, seafood-centric restaurant. I also did not know that the head chef, Carolynn Spence, competed as a challenger on Iron Chef America and once served food to General Zod from Superman II from her previous Hollywood restaurant days. LOCATION: Located within the Palladium Hotel but with big bright signs from the street level. Very little street parking, but there's a pay lot across the restaurant. AMBIANCE: Very cozy, casual, warm and inviting with open bar and prep kitchen. SERVICE: Top notch. Kayla was great and gave great recommendations. APPS: * Definitely recommend the fried Scottish Olives - they wrapped a stuffed green olive with sage sausage and deep-fried it to perfection. * Also great is the salted cod beignet - like a savory fish donut with a tasty, unusual contrast of textures. * Grilled octopus with hazelnut romesco was super tender too. MAINS: * Our favorite was the grilled Branzino. Super moist meat with a crispy seasoned skin. It came with a generous helping of really soft and sweet beets and carrots. * The fried snapper with basil and lemongrass was a Thai-style preparation. It tasted fine, though the parents felt it was cooked too long as the meat was slightly dry and bones were really rock hard. Somehow, Dad managed to get at all the meat, LOL! * Braised short rib was huge, meaty, and fork-tender. The fried Knish with chive cream was nice. Some folks may find the sauerkraut to be really tart. SIDES: * The succotash was a bit too rich and creamy, with cauliflower mushy. I liked the giant white beans and minced apples. Probably not needed since the fish mains seem to have enough veggies. DESSERT * Definitely get the coconut panna cotta with sorbet. So smooth, light, refreshing, and not overly sweet. There is one thing that separates a 4 star from a 5 star foodie restaurant, that is a wait staff person like Sabrina! She was incredible! Her knowledge and love for the food of this restaurant and kindness and recommendations were superior. Not to mention she brewed a special pitcher of iced tea just for me. We started with a foodie delight in the charred octopus, wow! The only thing we would have done different was to get more! Then the hubs got the wagu hamburger with their amazing truffle fries. We arrived a few minutes early and were trying to follow the sign for valet parking that is in front of the hotel. Once we turned the corner and saw the entrance to the restaurant there wasn't any more signage. Apparently we had slowed down enough for a woman to come up to our truck asking if we wanted valet parking. She had valet tickets but no other uniform or anything that would indicate she was legit. We asked her questions until we were satisfied and then left our vehicle with her. We were still too early for our reservation so we headed upstairs to the lounge and enjoyed a cocktail. The server was exceptionally friendly and had the bartender make me an off-menu drink that was delicious. The restaurant is small and a bit too crowded if any table next to yours is having too much of a good time, which was our experience. Still, the four of us ordered our drinks and started to peruse the menu. We ordered oysters and clams for starters; especially enjoying the tasty broth with the clams. I was tempted to ask for some to take home it was so good! Entrees were duck, steelhead, and a massive steak platter with shrimp added at an extra cost. All were very good but the temperature made us wonder if our food had been sitting for a while (no one likes cold-ish) food :( Desserts were yummy--including the fromage platter (actually, it was my favorite!). We ordered the charred and it was really soft and tasted amazing. Never had such soft octopus before. The steelhead was good but for the portion and price it is definitely a little expensive. I treated myself to a date night before seeing Jack Whitehall at the Moore theater which was nice because I could see the line status across the street. Had a good experience here. The service is really great on a Sunday night when they're not too busy. They have a smaller menu, but everything is very well thought out and produced. All of the fish tasted extremely fresh, well seasoned and perfectly cooked. The portions were a little bit small, even the large plates you probably could've eaten two of. But all of the flavors made it worth the price. Highly recommend the steelhead and the huckleberry dessert. My belly is full and my heart is full. Since COVID-19 became a common word in our vocabulary the only time I ventured beyond my typical restaurants was when I was away for business travel. Resolved to escape my self-imposed bubble my friend and I decided to go to Shaker + Spear which was only chosen because it was a highly rated seafood restaurant neither of us had been. I made last minute reservations when I saw only three reservation time slots were available so I'd recommend making reservations and making them in advance. I am not entirely surprised as COVID-19 regulations make space premium and limited. Speaking of, the restaurant follows all the COVID-19 regulations with staff wearing gloves and masks, social distancing and limited numbers of people enforced, hand sanitizer at every table, and tables spread out. Our entire experience here was amazing. Josh is an incredible bartender. Maybe it was serendipitous that it was Josh who immediately greeted us and seated us because it provided an opportunity to discuss the restaurant's cocktails and the detail in preparation from the infused simple syrups to the house made tonics - Josh puts an incredible amount of attention into his craft. And that's the difference between the bartender who can follow a recipe to the bartender like Josh who makes one forget there's a recipe and creates phenomenal cocktails. My friend ordered the Scream Queens which he commented was one of the best. I ordered the Rosemary's Baby which was hands down the best tequila cocktail I have ever drank. This cocktail had a perfect balance - mildly bubbly, slightly tart, slightly sweet, and oh so easy to drink the flavors never were overwhelming but each spoke for itself popping through and blending amazingly so. I was terribly impressed. I could have left here pleased with the cocktails alone but the food and dining service must also be spoken of! Mitch, our server, was equally incredible. Mitch was attentive, witty, funny, and a true joy to have as a waiter. Typically when I mention my food allergies and my friend mentions his our waiter or waitress will seem a bit perplexed and there's lots of going to the kitchen and coming back. Mitch, though, had a complete understanding of the menu and was able to make solid recommendations. His confidence put me at ease because I knew I was going to have a great night without worrying if an allergen was there and he responded to our allergies like it was so easy to work around which made me feel even better. The food was delicious. We ordered the crunchy sesame peanut shrimp as an appetizer, the cast iron steelhead, and the diver scallops for dinner. The crunchy sesame peanut shrimp was incredible - there was just enough sesames to add a nice crunch, the peanut flavor was a perfect accent, and the little chiles made the dish pop with a pleasant spiciness. The diver scallops were smooth and buttery. The mashed potatoes were also smooth and buttery. I ended up eating half of my friend's salmon in exchange for my broccoli (a fair trade if not overly beneficial for me) and that salmon was mind blowing. It was tender, flaky, flavorful delight perfectly cooked. I haven't had one better. When it came to dessert Mitch noted that we were largely limited to sorbet. Now my friend loves sorbet with berries so he happily ordered it whereas I am tired of sorbet which Mitch picked up on. He suggested making an adult root beer float of sorts but instead of ice cream using sorbet and instead of root beer using sparkling wine. I took Mitch's suggestion and I am not sure if I will order sorbet any other way again. It was fantastic! The wine and the sorbet balanced each other with the sorbet's sweetness smoothing over the wine's brut flavor creating a very pleasant dessert drink. Outstanding restaurant but not perfect. First off, I had the octopus appetizer and it was mind blowing... octopus is so difficult to perfect and this chef's nailed it. Delicious flavor profile and so tender, not chewy or rubbery at all! For the rest of it, this joint is crazy expensive despite the $$ signs on their profile plus they charge a surcharge which feels like a scam in my opinion. I couldn't help but to order the risotto and just like the octopus, the flavor profile was exception BUT the risotto was totally undercooked. Ambiance is good but they could lounge it up a bit. During our four day trip to Seattle, we ate at Shaker & Spear twice. We started with a magnificent breakfast. The All Palladian breakfast is not for the faint of heart. It consists of all your breakfast staples: eggs, potatoes, French toast, and sausage...except that everything is tastier and better seasoned than you would expect. The French Toast was gorgeous: perfect brioche with just enough egg to come out crispy, and a moderated hand with the sugar to make this an adult's breakfast. The eggs were fluffy and delicious, and the sausages were delicious without being over salty or drenched in sage like most breakfast sausages tend to be. The potatoes, parboiled, seasoned with a hint of cumin, and then pan fried were to die for. I hate most breakfast potatoes, but these left me begging for more. I loved this meal so much that my wife and I returned for dinner. The Branzino was epic, seasoned well and fried so well that most of the head was edible and enjoyable. (That is a serious compliment). The charred octopus as a starter was delicious, though I just wanted more. My wife's halibut was very good, and the salads were good. The fiddlehead fern heads were epic, but the lentils and harissa sauce were okay with the halibut. Breakfast was so outstanding that this remind a five star rating. It's a nice space to dine, and the wait staff gave us enough room to enjoy our meals in peace and were available to answer questions. I really wanted to like this place. I'm a sucker for great ambiance and delicious food, and willing to pay a pretty penny for it. But I have to say that this place is objectively WAY OVERPRICED for the quality of food. Maybe we came on an off day? I ordered the scallops, my friend ordered the burger and we shared a dessert. The food looked pretty, but the flavors were disappointing and unbalanced. The burger was dry and bland. Seems like they have some logistical issues to iron out cause the cook and seasoning in my dish were so off too. To be fair the ambiance of the restaurant was nice and the service was great! As others mentioned the portions are small, which I'm usually ok with if it's satisfyingly rich, has a balance of creative flavors, or delivers thoughtful textures. But our food was just NOT GOOD. My friend was in town and craving seafood so a group of us came here for dinner! We did make a reservation ahead of time and I think the tables were nicely spread out during COVID. Appetizer wise: we ordered the oysters, beignets, truffle fries, and charred octopus for the table. The crowd favorites were definitely the octopus and the fries, I personally loved the fries a lot! The group was not a fan of the beignets. Paella: My friend and I shared the paella and in combination with the appetizers we ordered it ended up being the right amount. Not huge, but I did enjoy the scallops and chorizo in it! However, my friend ordered the scallops dish that came with Brussels sprouts and I ended up thinking I definitely should have ordered that! The Brussels sprouts from the scallop dish was the ultimate favorite of the night. My friends also enjoyed the crispy shrimp, I think it may have had a Thai peanut sauce on top? Ultimately, the restaurant was beautiful and the food was good!
