Shan is my go to szechuan spot in Downtown Brooklyn! The flavors are authentic, which are hard to come by in this area and believe me, the spice is no joke! Steamed egg with minced pork- A great option if you are looking for a non-spicy dish. The egg is so soft and flavorful. This is one of my favorite dishes here! Hot and Sour Soup- Really packs a kick! Stewed Fish Fillet with Chili Sauce - As authentic szechuan as it can get! The fish was super tender and you get that spicy mala numbing flavor all packed in one bite. Shan was incredible! I've been looking for a good Chinese Restaurant in the area and decided to stop by Shan. I ordered the cauliflower dry pot and 3 pepper tofu and both were incredible. The perfect level of spicy, texture was amazing for both the cauliflower and tofu, and portion sizes were very generous. I was so excited to dig into the cauliflower that I forgot to take a picture until it was too late . I really appreciated all the vegetarian options as well and how delicious they were. Service was extremely kind and helpful, and the restaurant itself is beautiful - we had a celebration dinner here and it was the perfect spot. We did have a reservation on a Saturday night and ended up having to wait 20-30 mins to be seated, but given how popular the spot is and how good the food was I don't mind! Decided to come here last minute on a Sunday and so glad we did! It was easy to get a last minute reservation and the restaurant itself is really nice and well decorated. The lychee jasmine drink was amazing. My favorite app was the eggplant with garlic (which has a LOT of garlic). The fried rice, string beans, and fish with chili sauce were all amazing - everything had the perfect balance of flavors and spice. The menu is huge so there is something for everyone. Shan is another welcome restaurant addition to our Cobble Hill neighborhood. They specialize in Sichuan cuisine. We are excited to visit since I decided to have my birthday dinner here. The place looks small from the outside, but once inside, we noticed more dining tables at the back. The front of the restaurant has a retractable glass door that can be opened in warm weather. They are BYOB when we visited, the staff took our bottle and placed it in an ice bucket for us. (I added a star for that) We started with wonton with chicken broth that suits two people, we then had the fried chicken with garlic (it was nice that the dry chili is served as a side). And fried braised duck served with buns. We found both dishes delicious and freshly made. We then shared double-cooked pork; a thinly sliced pork belly, sautéed with leek and miso sauce together with shredded tea smoke duck fried rice. We both agreed that the dishes were delicious but slightly on the salty side. They have fantastic customer service here, and I will likely visit this place again, but will probably tell the chef to take it easy on the salt. read more

Ma-La Szechuan Wonton - loved this appetizer. Thin skins and a tender chew. But the best and most surprising part was the (?) szechuan chili flakes (?) sprinkled atop the wontons. Pickled Wood Ear Mushroom - Average, but still pleasing. I like that it's chilled and has finely diced chili peppers, but I wish there was a stronger vinegar flavor. Lamb Dry Pot - This is probably my favorite dish here. Each piece of lamb is tender and bursting with savory+spicy flavor. And I always love some well-cooked lotus root. Stewed FIsh w. Fresh Szechuan Peppercorn (for 2) - Huge serving of food. Standard dish with tender fish and lots of cabbage. Every bite is soaked in the hot oil (don't drink it!), which can start to weigh you down. When you first walk in the restaurant itself looks small, little did we know there was more seating in the back with a beautiful skylight. Staff were extremely polite and friendly from start to finish. We were there for my mother's birthday and ordered a good amount of food. The lamb was excellent (not too much chew) and seriously spicy. This was easily one of the hottest version of this dish I have had (unexpectedly so as I wasn't in Flushing) and I am happy to have found a place for me to go if I really want a spice kick. #Shan has been on my radar for a bit. Here are some of my highlights from my experience: The hostess was super friendly and informed us that there was a wait for a table. She offered to sit as at the bar - the place has a great ambiance. Happy hour was until 6:30 PM so I tried a drink called Utterly Tingling ($9) and Rose Lychee -both were delicious cocktails. The bartender's pour for the wine was much less than expected for a glass. Food: Pork soup dumplings, dan dan noodles (v. spicy), scallion pancakes - all great and flavorful. Our entree was the Kung Pao chicken ($19) with brown rice and it was a dish we left unfinished. The chicken had all the flavors but I could not enjoy it as it was super chewy. The brown rice was undercooked.- a disappointing finish to a solid start. Shan is SUCH a welcomed addition to the neighborhood! My review is specific to takeout, because I haven't had the pleasure of dining in but I heard they have a lovely backyard patio that they open up when the weather is warm! To preface, I love Sichuan food and we used to order takeout from Han Dynasty in Downtown Brooklyn for good Sichuan food, or if we're feeling really fancy, order delivery from Birds of a Feather in Williamsburg. Now with Shan, we will no longer be ordering from either Han Dynasty or Birds of a Feather (the latter of which is still our fave but we can now leave it for special dine in occasions!) The reason it doesn't get a 4 is because it's no Cafe China or Birds of a Feather, and there are at least 2 dishes we've gotten here that have been too sweet than we are used to (and doesn't taste authentic)- the kung pao chicken and the mapo tofu. I was particularly disappointed that the mapo tofu didn't have the right kick and the sauce was quite sweet. The kung pao chicken was tender AF (yum) but again, too sweet. Standout dishes: stewed fish filet with chili sauce- this is "shui zhu yu" and although it's not spicy as we're used to, the flavors are there and dish is great eggplant in garlic sauce- always delivers; great flavor infusion snow pea with garlic- just the right amount of flavor and you can tell they use lard for that extra depth and umami! if you're vegetarian, you might want to ask and confirm this, as this might mean it's not veggie-friendly fried fish drypot- YES! love this dish, even though I know our takeout format doesn't do it justice. We will have to experience it in person at the restaurant to determine if they fry it well. What a hidden gem! Finally a decent Sichuan restaurant in this neighborhood! The restaurant is spacious with elegant ambiance; the seating area is very comfortable. Besides the regular dining area, they have a very nice bar area and they will soon be able to serve liquor drinks. If you enjoy mala flavor you have to give this place a try. Even they had just recently opened a couple months ago, it's very packed especially in the dinner time so make sure to make reservations before visiting. The food was very authentic and high quality with perfect balance of mala flavor. We ordered a wide variety of dishes and each was delicious and flavorful. I personally love the sweet and spicy udon (甜水麵); it's a signature dish originated from Chengdu; the udon noodles were sauced with soy sauce, peanut sauce and chili oil; it's super flavorful and the noodles were so chewy. Man oh man was this place superb. Get in while they are still BYOB (they were as of June 28) and bring a bottle of sauvignon blanc to cut that fantastic mala flavor. The fish dry pot was incredible - one of the best sichuan dishes I've had in a very long time, and the beef with cayenne pepper rivals our favorite dish at wu liang ye (beef with capsicum). It was hard to choose as everything looked incredible. No, it isn't cheap, but the quality is extremely high and we actually found the portions quite generous. But do bring some tissues and prepare yourself for some spice - definitely plenty of appetizers if you need to bring the kids or spice-averse but this one is definitely best for those who enjoy some heat. Next time we will try takeout but the dry pots seem like something best had in person. I highly recommend you choose one as part of your meal. Our two entree orders included Kung Pao Chicken ($18) and Mustard Green Shoot Fried Rice ($11). The chicken. We ordered without the addition of peanuts. The portion was substantial for two to share. It was really good---definitely spicy and oily enough. The entire dish was so flavorful and included diced thigh meat, spicy peppers, ginger, garlic, and wonderful flavors. The nitpick? White rice not included. Must order separate for an additional $2.00. The rice. Lightly fried, including egg and the mustard shoots. A bit salty but a crowd pleaser. Very tasty. As a first timer of this new business, I would attest to being satisfied with the meal. I considered it as a real treat since overall, it wasn't the healthiest but definitely good quality and enjoyable. Would I return? I don't know. And here's why: *Their prices are steep, especially considering the exclusion of white rice with entrees--some as much as $22 or $35!! * More than half of their entrees or items on the menu include pork, beef, and even lamb.
