A group of coworkers and I visited Shanghai Dumpling King for lunch. The restaurant opens at 12 PM on the day of our visit, but when we arrived a few minutes before noon, it was still closed. It took several minutes past 12 PM for the restaurant to open and begin receiving customers. We were somewhat apprehensive about dining there since we had a meeting scheduled for 1 PM and were uncertain about how quickly they would prepare and serve our food, which would allow us to eat without feeling rushed. However, we were finally seated about five minutes later. There was only one employee attending to customers and processing payments, although we were the only diners at that time. It appeared that they received a significant number of takeout orders. Nevertheless, the gentleman was able to take our order, which consisted of approximately six dishes, and it took around 15 minutes for some of the dishes to be served so we could begin eating. Complimentary tea was provided. We ordered Broccoli with beef, Mongolian beef, Sweet and sour chicken, Shrimp and pork Shumai, one soup, and a side of chicken fried rice and steamed rice. The food was quite good! I enjoyed it, as did my coworkers. I should mention that one other coworker and I ordered Thai iced tea, which was very concentrated; it was still delicious, but we had to dilute it with water or additional tea, and then it was perfect. Overall, the experience was quite positive! I have no complaints about the food; it was very tasty! The service was also commendable! I would like to acknowledge the one employee who assisted us. I accidentally spilled my cup of water, and he was very kind, offering me extra napkins to clean myself and the table, and he even fetched a mop to soak up the water. Although we were the only customers in the restaurant and it wasn't particularly busy, he was still very gracious! I would definitely recommend trying this place if you are nearby. read more

We stopped by for dinner on a Sunday evening, and there were plenty of tables available in the restaurant, so we were seated immediately. It was a quiet and casual environment. The workers were helpful and attentive and provided excellent service during our entire visit, even giving recommendations while we ordered. We got the spicy lamb dumplings, spicy shrimp dumplings, spicy pork dumplings, pot stickers, and pan fried pork buns. Everything came out fresh in about 10-15 minutes, and the tastes were phenomenal. The spicy dishes were borderline too spicy for me, but just too juicy and delicious for me not to eat. My faves were the pot stickers (some of the best pot stickers I've ever had) and the pan fried pork buns, which had the perfect consistency and balance of sweet and savory pleasing to my palate. The servings are a decent size, so we ended up with almost half our order as leftovers. Shanghai Dumpling King has delightfully dense and very tightly packed dumplings: The wrappers are the perfect amount of chewy toothsomeness yet aren't too thick. The favorite item was the Spicy Wonton with Peanut (value priced at $11, 8 pieces). These dumplings had an addictive blend of spicy oil plus peanut butter; I would've eaten them all if I could. The Lamb Dumplings ($12, 8 pieces) were similarly dense and tasty but oddly, I couldn't distinguish the filling from pork. I was really looking forward to the spicy bacon rice cake ($15) but it was too doughy and too spiced, almost overwhelming your tastebuds with sodium spiked umami flavor. I have a feeling that this is a dish you either LOVE or you don't. It really calls out for a counterpoint of their green beans that I wish we'd ordered. My neighbor couldn't stop raving about Shanghai Dumpling King's Kung Pao Chicken ($14). For days he went on about it then said he was going to pick up 4-6 orders to eat for lunch & dinner. He's never gone quite this bonkers over my Cantonese cooking so take it as high praise: Get the Kung Pao Chicken! Even with the recent explosion of new dumpling spots in lower Haight/Duboce Park/The Castro, I can attest this restaurant had a long line on Saturday night. Give it a try. read more

Very very basic ambiance with an empty steam table in the front and windowless basement of 1970s looking tables below. If you want to rock out the hole-in-the-wall vibe, this place has it. The food is very reasonably priced and solid. Not the top dumpling place in the area, but does the trick. Steamed Shanghai Soup Dumplings: I feel like it's obligatory to order the eponymous dish. Their xiaolong bao was technically well executed. Lots of "soup" (i.e. yummy pork fat). A dough skin that was thick enough to not break but not any thicker than necessary. And lots of yummy pork inside. However, the flavor felt a bit off, like maybe a bit too porky if that makes sense. Though I will note they didn't give me any vinegar by default, I had to ask. And when they gave it to me it was the black kind, not the red vinegar, and there was no fresh ginger strands in there. So maybe it tasted off because it didn't have the proper dipping sauce pairing to balance out the porky flavors. Combination Egg Foo Young: This felt very old school, like something I'd order from Chinatown if I was alive during the 1950s. Loved how the edges were so wispy and crispy. And lots of great filling the egg. Felt like a hearty crust-less quiche. It was nice to have a generous amount of proteins (shrimp, pork, chicken) among the veggies. Plus that gravy on top, so much flavor albeit a tad salty feeling towards the end. Note that you should eat this fast because the texture gets a bit soggy if you delay. read more

I was working a block away today and was looking for a snack, just enough to hold me off til the end of my 14hr shift. I found this place a few blocks away and felt like I could get something light and tasty. What else would you order besides testing the dumplings of a business that has the dish in their name?!? I also got some pork buns because you can never go wrong with pork buns. I was impressed by the freshness but not surprised by the flavor. I had high hopes and these guys delivered. I wasn't sure if my coworker would like the pork buns because he never had them before and he doesn't really like things undercooked which in my mind, pork buns are on the borderline but always a treat.. Anyway, he loved them as we split the portions in half. If there's anything that I would change next time, is I'd order a full order of each just for me to eat alone. Food aside, the ambiance seemed like a to go only kinda place from what I saw. Like Chipotle where they make it in front of you kinda deal. No complaints here especially since my food was ready in time and was fresh. The gentleman behind the counter was super chill too. We had some banter and I left feeling like I was supporting a friendly small business. Neighborhood Chinese food with an abundance selections of dumplings and stir fry dishes. This is the place you should come to visit if you're looking for the street food type of Chinese food and not looking for the usual Chinatown fare type of food. As I waited for my food, I could smell the wok hey from the kitchen to the dining room. My spicy pork wontons were plump and savory, And my order of spicy rice cake stir fry was delicious and most importantly it was pretty "wok hey" (smokey and aromatic because of the breath of the wok). If you miss and craving the Peranakan Chinese Malaysian, Singaporean and Indonesian dish called Char Kwee Tiauw, this dish might do the trick. I'm not sure if its because it was an off night or they're still working out the kinks of being a new restaurant, but our food took forever to come out. Usually you get the dumplings/baos first before your entrees. We legit got everything in backwards order. And strange timing too. Mongolian beef came out first and 35min later, everything else came out. The food being really good was the saving grace because its frustrating to wait for food and watch as there's too many waiters and not enough chefs. Food (5/5) Shanghai food is my favorite type of chinese cuisine. I feel like its the best balance of sweet, salty, and umami compared to other types like Cantonese, mandarin or Schezuan. So when I found out that we live so close to a shanghai restaurant, oh man, game over. It's pretty good chinese food without the touristy feel of Chinatown. So I consider this a hidden gem. Prices are reasonable too with most dishes being under $15. And they take credit card. If they could get their logistics down, this would easily become one of the better chinese restaurants in SF. I think what would help was if they switch up resources because 1 person can honestly wait all the tables, its not a big restaurant. Also, they rarely check up on you which is whatever until you're parched for water constantly. What would help is just having a pitcher of water out at each table. Not bad but not amazing for Chinese food in SF. I would recommend the spicy wontons because they're topped with a delectable peanut sauce, but the dish really wasn't that spicy at all. Hot and sour soup was very heavy on the sour side; I also wish it was a bit thicker and had more components (it was mostly tofu). I'm normally a huge fan of salt and pepper fish fillet but I think theirs is a bit on the bland side and definitely needed more pepper. Definitely top tier -Spicy Chives and Shrimp Dumpling: I really like shrimp and dumplings, and this dumpling has nice chunks of shrimp and was so flavor packed -Beijing Duck Crepe: really really good! Yuuuum! Came here on a Sunday for an early dinner around 5:45pm very hungry post-workout! My 2 friends and I were seated right away. We ordered several things to share: Stir Fried Rice Cakes ($13)- this was what I came for the rice cakes were perfectly chewy and paired nicely with the pork and sauce- I will say it was definitely a bit salty. Good portion size! Pan Fried Pork Buns ($12)- For me it was a bit more like a steamed bun with a bit too much bun to meat ratio, but good. Spicy Wontons ($11)- I was not expecting peanut sauce in this, but I was sure glad it came with it. I was nervous because I'm not super good with spicy things, but this one wasn't too spicy and the peanut sauce made it taste so good! Came here for the first time with a group of friends (one recommended the restaurant since she lived nearby but hasn't tried this spot). It reminded me of a cross between a college restaurant and an old Chinatown-like restaurant. There are more tables and seating on a separate floor off to the side and below (see the first few images). We ordered plenty of food and a bit too much actually. While the food did take a while to come out, thankfully we were able to start eating the first few dishes that were quicker to make. The Mapo tofu was good, the green onion pancake was great, and the Spicy Chives and Pork Dumplings were very memorable and juicy! We also got some chicken, and pan-fried buns, and I think the soup-like dish in my photos is the Spicy Fish Fillet Szechuan Style - these three for me are a must-have here! I have probably eaten at this restaurant 30 or 40 times since I moved into my Glen Park neighborhood. The dumplings are wonderful and a friend of mine who's just entering her teens loves and has taught me to love the pea sprouts. I think twice in those many times that I've eaten here. Came with a friend on a weekday night, and we were able to get a seat immediately. We ordered the Pea Spouts, Shanghai Steamed Soup Dumpling (XLB), Pan Fried Pork Bun, and Minced Pork Noodles. The best thing we ate was the Pea Sprouts - they were fresh, crisp, and had a good garlicky flavor. Everything else was just okay. The XLBs had a thicker skin than I'd like, and the soup inside was a little too sweet. The flavor in and of itself was pretty good, though, and there was a good meat-to-skin ratio. The Pan Fried Pork Bun was not really crispy, had very little soup, and there was too much bun in proportion to meat. It didn't taste pan fried and was a little soggy, so it tasted like a steamed meat bun, which is not what I want when I order a pan fried pork bun. The Minced Pork Noodles were supposedly zha jiang mian, at least according to the Chinese description. But instead of using thicker, slightly chewy noodles, this restaurant used egg noodles. Zha jiang mian is also usually made with soybean paste that creates a dark, thick sauce, but this version had a minced pork sauce that I wasn't expecting. A little weird that the English description was more accurate than the Chinese description, since this is supposed to be a Chinese restaurant. Definitely did not taste like zha jiang mian, and didn't really taste like something I'd want to eat again. Overall, an okay and filling meal, but not something to write home about. The waitstaff was friendly though! We were able to find street parking relatively quickly, probably since it was a random weekday. read more

Wow every dish we ordered was delicious - only one picture here because we were too busy eating We ordered the spicy beef tendon appetizer, fried rice, garlic pea sprouts, and 3 variations of the dumpling (XLB, pan fried, and lamb dumpling in the spicy sauce) The tendon was sliced super thinly with great texture and flavor, fried rice was perfectly done - flavorful but not too oily, pea sprouts were tender and the dumplings are all solid. My favorite was the XLB, the wrapper is not as thin as I usually like but the filling is very flavorful and juicy. The waiter was very friendly and told us to eat the XLB first before it got cold. My go to place in San Francisco for Chinese food. I've been to many and I mean many Chinese food restaurants and this is by far my favorite in terms of delicious food and value. This is their second location I believe. We live in the Castro neighborhood and used to order from their other location which is really far from us and now we can walk to the restaurant! My favorite dishes: Dumplings Dumplings Dumplings Sweet and sour chicken Fried rice Pork buns The dumplings are amazing. Whether they're steamed, spicy, pork, or lamb, they are mouthwatering and always hit the spot. One of my favorite things about this place is its location. It is right next to Last Rites, a fun tiki bar. We usually go to Shanghai after a visit there. Makes for a nice date night. Also the customer service is great. Attentive, fast, friendly, and patient. I went on day two of their opening. It's wonderful to have this authentic Chinese food institution in the neighborhood. The dishes particularly all the various dumplings are excellent. I was highly looking forward to the sheng jian bao (pan fried pork buns) which were only $12 for 8 pieces. While still delicious, the buns were a bit undercooked and filling too mushy. My boyfriend and I came here looking for dumplings from a spot that wasn't a chain. We were a little hesitant at first since we were the only ones, but it was also 5 PM. The upside was that our food came out super fast. The cucumber salad might be a bit salty for some, but we thought it was just right--initially salty, but the crisp freshness of the cucumber balanced it out nicely. The dan dan noodles were pretty good, though I personally wished they had a bit more flavor. The lamb dumplings weren't my favorite, mainly because I'm not a fan of the Chinese spice used in them. Simply put, according to the homepage of Shanghai Dumpling King's website, "If dumplings are your thing..." The irony here is that I'm never craving Chinese food, I don't know why. When asked what I want for dinner-- it's never on my radar. This is partially why I've put the Mrs. in charge of figuring out where we eat out occasionally. Shanghai popped up on a plethora of websites as by far the best Chinese in San Francisco. I had to find out if this was true and what is it about this spot that's got locals and critics raving? As far as I can tell, there's not much information on the restaurant besides a unanimous opinion that the dumplings, specifically the Spicy Chive and Pork dumplings, are excellent. When we arrived at this unassuming eatery, a line circled the block. We thought it was the nightclub next door but no, it was apparently dumpling time. The interior is totally clean, and very inviting. Warm wooden decor and tiny laughing buddhas; waving cat statues and a strong smell of tantalizing pork broth filled the air. Our server sat us down quickly and asked what we'd like. We told him a plate of the Spicy Pork Dumplings and Tofu Thread Salad and before we could crack a can of coke, it was at the table. It was picturesque and dumpling perfect. I was a little shocked and blown away by the scent. Prickly ash and aniseed permeated my palate, spicing and kick starting my tummy growls. I know there's nothing inherently attractive about the word 'salivating' in a food review but damn, these dumplings had me at hello. The texture was smooth and with the slightest tooth, salty ground pork and chives balanced the peppery and perfuming spice in the sambal broth they were bathed in. It was a dumpling cherub shooting an arrow at my heart from the tiny porcelain bowl on the table. I was in love. The Tofu Thread Salad was fragrant with sesame oil and soy sauce, rounding out this unforgettable dining experience with a nutty and salty edge. Shanghai Dumpling King is a must try if you're looking for Chinese in the city. And you don't need to spend an arm and a leg to get some. This is a completely affordable restaurant in a city rampant with high cost. I'm not sure which was more shocking, the food or the bill. We laughed, slapped the card down and left 30%. Everyone in that kitchen deserved a solid high five-- the kind that brings lightning from the sky. Now that I've been back a couple times, giving it the 4 stars it deserves. The duck jian bing remains the thing I go back for - the crepe is on the soft side but the flavors are just so on point I can forgive it. I have also tried the pork one and it was decent but the duck one is just so much better. Other things I like: Pea sprout w/ garlic sauce - shockingly delicious, very tender sprouts with good flavor Spicy tendon - the weird softness from the first time hasn't been an issue again. I love how thinly sliced the beef tendon is. Shanghai style meat wonton soup - the soup itself was okay but the wontons were really good. I usually dislike Shanghai style wontons but not these ones Stir fried rice cakes - Excellent chew and flavor. I had read a bunch of good reviews for this dish and it didn't disappoint Things I would skip: Pan fried pork bun - These were quite bad - too doughy not soupy enough inside, go to a pan fried pork bun specialist if you want this. Mapo tofu - I'm not sure what the flavor was but it wasn't the right flavor for mapo tofu. Don't get this. Vegetarian steamed dumpling - These are okay but I find the filling a bit gummy and the wrapper still a bit thick. read more

Ever since I moved to SF I have been looking for my go-to Chinese takeout spot and hurrah it has been found! We ordered the spicy wontons, potstickers, scallion pancakes, spicy beef, chicken chow mein, and eggplant. Everything was so delicious. Only comment was that the scallion pancakes felt a bit too crisp. Already excited to order from here again. read more
